Re: 6th OOC

So since Find Familiar has a casting time of one week, I would like to use max spellburn (20 points) to get a max roll of 20 on my spell check which would total 22 with my CL. Since the ability damage heals 1 point per day I should have enough time to recover it all before the game starts.

One thing I would ask clarification on (never understood this part of the book) is that if using spellburn normally just adds a bonus to your spellcheck roll, but using the 20 points for a nat 20 rule just gives you a 20, wouldn't I infact be better off using 19 points of burn and rolling the dice for a result greater than 20? I realize that doing this there is still a 5% chance of rolling a 1, but those odds ain't bad...

Re: 6th OOC

As you say, the 20th point of spellburn ensures that you don't have the 5% chance of failure. It would also depend on whether you wanted to shoot for a focal or demonic familiar -- or avoid the latter outcome.

Now that I think of it, could I also do that?  Demons are fine with me, btw.

Re: 6th OOC

Yeah the demonic familiar is actually pretty decent. Soaks ability damage and gives you a cool contingency for if you die in game ;)

In reply to Betrugar (msg # 524):

You can but you'd need to declare your amount of spellburn and then reroll your spellcheck (d20+int bonus+luck bonus+caster level).

Re: 6th OOC

Truthfully it's the physical configuration I find most consequential, the Chaotic column (and the Lawful column to a lesser degree) has way better options and abilities than the Neutral column. Are Chaotic alignments disallowed in this game?

Roland and Zaichus are leveled up! They both had horrible hit point rolls, I'm afraid to say.

Re: 6th OOC

Let’s make it twenty points.

19:30, Today: Betrugar rolled 44 using 1d20+25.  Find Familiar reroll.

That’s more like it.

Re: 6th OOC

Chaotic alignments are not disallowed.

Betrugar,  you have found a focal familiar with that roll. You also need to make a d20 and d14 roll without any modifications. You should update your post to account for the massive, life-altering amount of spellburn.

Yep, low hp rolls can suck all of the joy out of advancement.

Re: 6th OOC

Ok I'm gonna use 15 points of spellburn, with my CL that a +17 on the roll. Hoping for a Focal... Fingers crossed

Re: 6th OOC

I've had a wee bit of a think about which RPOL games I enjoy the most, having been a wee bit of a denizen for going on ten years.

I've concluded that I enjoy the mega-dungeons the most, the Arden Vul, the Barrowmaze--more so than the last two modules which had their charms but were narrow in scope. This is not true, of course, of all DCC modules; I found Fate's Fell Hand to be quite expansive.

The next one up is pretty meaty (48 pages), but I intend to run it far more expeditiously than Doom. That raises my next point. I find even a two or three day break in progress to break immersion in the game world and, hence, lessen my enjoyment. I love playing Arden Vul but periodically the DM goes 3 or 4 or 5 days without posting. That breaks the spell. So I intend to run this game most every day. We'll see how that goes. We won't wait for dear Tom; do you hear that Mr. Yoris?

Right now the party size stands at six 2+2+1+1. That will do for the Dreaming Caverns.

I completely agree about post frequency. I love a daily (or multiple times daily) rate.

Kids? School? If you think that's my biggest time-sink, you'll have to wait for the biography :-)
