Re: In memory of...

Zacaldo I totally agree with you onthe price issue. I stopped buying GW figures after they went to slot bases.

I can remember going to my local independent games shop and buying dwarves for 30p a figure. They came in a little snappy bag with a piece of bent over card stapled to the top. (those were the days) for my £2.50 pocket money I could get myself a unit of figures ready to paint for the following club night.

I canbuy figures now from other companies for far less than GW and still use their rules. Copplestone Casting does a fantastic range of futuristic figures that look like guardmen I have them all and use them all he time. I do admit I can't stand 40k minaiture rules so I still use Spacefarers for all my skirmish games.

Now there's a set of rules to be proud of. Spacefarers the for runner to rogue trader and the 40k universe. A little A5 booklet where you basically used two tables to fight.
the first was a sliding column table to find if you hit and where you hit depending on range and cover and the like and the other table was a cross reference grid that had the weapon type along the top and the armour type down the side. A dice was rolled and you found out whether you did a light, serious wound or an out right kill.

each figure had a number of wounds two light = 1 serious, two serious = kill. also you had morale tests and a simple skill system for leader, medics and techs. you had a hand to hand and a ranged weapon stat. each figure had a simple character sheet and the book provided you a unit sheet containing 10 character sheets on it all at A5 size.

Oh and there was an experience system to for advancing your units.

You could buy a unit with your pocket money and the playing board used to be one of those square felt covered bridge tables. We'd pack it full of plastic buildings and trees and off you went.

GW (or should I say Citadel Miniatures) brought out a range of figures with SPACE MARINES, DARK DISCIPLES and STAR PATROL MEN. they were great and well made.

Ohhhh those were the days.

Re: In memory of...

Since I brought it up in another thread-

RIP Squats.  My Space Orks loved to kick the snot out of Stunties.  And speaking of Space Orks RIP Boar Boyz.  I used to love playing with my squad of boar boyz.

Re: In memory of...

I stopped playing 40k when the squats were discontinued they were my only army I had.

I have bought a few warhammer rules over the years but they are the historical sets legends of the old west and the pirate ones.

Tried inquisition once but found the large scale figures too costly for doing anything good with them.

have played a few necromunda games in the past too and own 4 blood bowl teams.

I also have all the expansions to Talisman (so if I ever have 20 hours spare I pull it out to punish my group) and Warhammerquest but never actually played it.

who do GW always manage to empty my bank account every few years without me knowing.

Re: In memory of...

Ah, GW RIP's, living in the UK they pretty much were the hobby industry, let me see: WHQ, Advanced HeroQuest (a superior game to WHQ in my opinion), Space Crusade (I guess technically MB Games), Space Hulk, Blood Bowl, and those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

I've ignored Nercomunda and Mordheim as still "living", although a rather tepid cadaver.

In reply to von Bek (msg #14):

Blood Bowl has been brought back but not the expansion. And the new video game by Cyanide is suppossed to have a turn by turn version of play.

In reply to flakk (msg #18):

Oh man Flakk you have to check out Blood Bowl, even if you are not a fan of football (american) or football (english), it is an out right blast, and the new versions keep things moving quickly.  Also if you can find someone else who would play, staring a leauge is the best as your team gets better and worse.  You are in GM, not Game Master, General Manager of a roving band of blood thristy maniacs.  If you play vids, I'll let you know how the turn by turn design is on the up and coming blood bowl game which looks a little rough but, If it is even close to GW version it is a must have.

I used to play Inquisitor but used the 40k models instead of the large models they released for it. Used to have a lot of fun with it.

Yeah the rules are constantly evolving and changing. And the old dirty tricks, amgic items etc cards are now represented by a table with you simulate with an ordinary poker deck

In reply to Algard (msg #23):

I've learned why they are not showing many live action trailers, because the almost the entire game is turn based, they just threw in the live action to help sales, and if you play live action you will learn how to play turn by turn better.  If this game is as good as it could be, with online leauges, custom stadiums and pitches, all the extra stuff, this game will be the last video game I will buy for years to come.

I've heard a rumour that Space Hulk could be making a return later this year. Anyone else hear anything about that?

Re: In memory of...

Please don't start a rumor about Space-Hulk if you haven't seen it somewhere legit, that game was and still is one of the best designed mini-games since Talisman. Do happen to know what company this rumor came from, because people are getting close to 100 dollars on E-Bay for second edition Space Hulk games in condition as far away from mint as possible.
I think I still have some random genestealer "blip" counter lying around my crap, and the old White Dwarfs constantly came up with new and fresh scenerios, I look around for Space-Hulk info just about anywhere I can find it, and I haven't heard a whisper.

Re: In memory of...

Sorry hairy, welcome to the forum, I get a little trigger happy over Space-Hulk, it is missed badly.  I wish I had some good news on that front, but GW has been acting alot different lately, 2009 and 2010 are going to be interesting years.  With FF taking over RPGs and Talisman, I don't know who would make the game even if it did come out.

Re: In memory of...

No offense taken :)

Space Hulk was one of my earlier games as well .. I've been giving GW my money since Dark Future (my first ever GW game), the red box Blood Bowl, Rogue Trader and WFB 3rd ed.

The loss of Black Industries wasn't exactly popular, but given economic factors, I guess it's understandable that GW are pulling in and concentrating on their core stuff.

If you enjoyed Space Crusade, check out the rules at
http://www.ironhands.com/rcintro.htm
Fast skirmish fun with GW miniatures in the 40k world without all of the inconvenience of GW rules...

Versions exist for Gorkamorka and Mordheim as well. Not so useful for RPOL, but fun in RL.

Re: In memory of...

I've been out of the tabletop hobby for a while. I just couldn't afford to keep up and with no one in my area who plays, it just wasn't worth it.

I'm actually surprised that GW hasn't gone a similar path as Wizards of the Coast. I can honestly say that if they came out with a virtual tabletop program for playing WHFB and WH40K online, I'd prolly pay for it and be willing to pay a monthly subscription fee.

I was fairly surprised with the closing of Black Industries, especially with their comment on wanting to focus on their own properties. They own both Black Flame Publishing and Solaris Publishing, neither of which print GW property. Not that I want them dropping Solaris. I've enjoyed several of the novels published by them. And as a shameless plug...read The Summoner by Gail Martin. It's great. It's a fantasy novel published by Solaris. I've met the author several times and she's really great.

Re: In memory of...

Of course Wizards hasn't gone thru with it's promised virtual tabletop programe as of yet, but I do agree with what your talking about. I have been in the same situation with I have all these models for games, but about five years ago things just died off at the local gaming store so I am largely out of luck.

Re: In memory of...

It's not quite the same thing, and you lose some of the experience, but...

There's always online play on vassal, or even maptools. Although I can't imagine GW not trying to kill it eventually. I'm not sure what legal ground they'd have to stand on, as the program isn't breaking copyright or trademark(as best as I can tell, although IANAL), and the pixel art is owned by the respective artists who made it.

I tend to prefer vassal, especially for 40k online. My only complaint so far has been that some opponents will leave mid battle. Something that doesn't happen face to face.  Maptools takes a bit more work.

For those of you who would be interested, I tend to run around on Vassal as JD. Maptools, you'd have to message me first.

I've not heard of vassal or maptools. They certainly sound interesting though. May very be what I'm looking for.
