What are some good ways to make maps?  Especially gridded ones?

Re: GM advice

I don't know, I played a round of Necromunda, with 23 men and woman on the field, without much hassle at all. In fact, It kept the game flowing.

Re: GM advice

I think D&D sites have quite a few pre-made grid maps.
Hell, even doing it on paper and scanning the result is easier than using paint, at least to start with.

And which of my games are you in Zacaldo?
Don't worry, I'm not going to crucify you IC.

I use a image editing program called Paint.Net

It's a free download and is pretty decent by itself. It's also got a fair (large?) number of user created addons, including one that I use for making grids. My method is to usually create three layers in the image, one for the terrain and characters, one for the grid, and one to shroud what the players can't actually see. Probably more work than I need, but it seems to work well. I then save the image as two files, one as the paint.net file which preserves the laters (for easier editting) and the second as a jpeg for ease of sharing with the players.

If anyone is interested, I can share the links for the program and the grid add on I use.

Re: GM advice

hi all.. new here.. I was wondering in and reading your post here.. I found a little program colled Dungeon Crafter, I prefere to make maps on that one, as it safe the maps as *.bmp easy to use and it already have diffrent "tags" in so it it fast and easy to use when maps, as the "tags" are walls, doors etc etc..

Re: GM advice

Hey guys.  I have all of the old Doomstones adventure on my computer, and I was wanting to run it using the 2e rules.  Any of you have copies of that that wouldn't mind helping me convert it?

Re: GM advice

I've been trying Dungeon crafter, and it seems alright for small pitched battles, but if it's bigger than a room it simply won't do.

Re: GM advice

Dungeon Crafter with Paint editing and good ole' pastes from the portraits here seem to be working alright.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: GM advice

Sorry for the silly question, I have been having problems trying to post PDF's on threads, doing something wrong than with other images? Any photo posting help would be cherished by the Conclave at the Cathedral of Illumination. Adieu, Senior Cardinal Ignato blesses your PC's with the Emperors strength and diligence.

Re: GM advice

You'll likely have to do a printscreen or such and then save the picture, upload and post. I think the site can't handle anything other than Jpeg formats.

Re: GM advice

Whilst going through the DW forums on the FFG website, I came across a thread discussing the perpose of an assault marine when devastators with Heavy Bolters exist. Long story short the basic heavy bolter in DW is very powerful because of the way the Full Auto fire rules work and the thread was generally asking what the point of melee combat is in the game when the heavy bolter does the job better than melee ever can.

Now the general response was that all fights are different, there are times when shooting just wont work ect, ect.

However unbalanced mechanics, perceived or actual, is not the focus of this post, instead I was intrigued by the idea put forward when talking about how to make melee feel more useful was the idea that each character needs a time to shine, that a GM should set up scenarios where a character gets a 'hell yeah' moment in which they achieve something the player feels is of importance.

Do you set up your games like this or do you avoid it and why?If you do use 'time to shine' situations how do you stop it being hijacked by either characters that are stronger mechanically or have a greater force of personality which allows them to draw the attention to themselves?

Re: GM advice

I allow it. Being a glory hog or having shining moments are good for a player. The more you are known by your allies, the better you are known by your enemies. You use Heavy weapons?, we'll use launchers and artillery. You like to charge into combat? I'll have a squad with melta guns waiting for you. You keep butchering normal enemies, I'll have obliterators and termies waiting for you.

I will step in when a player crosses the line but I will always give my players enough room to sign their own doom.

My 2 throne.

Re: GM advice

The gain of renown and the effects it has are seperate from the time to shine moment however, and achievements are more than just combat victories.
