Re: Only War!

Just so there's no confusion, I'd be interested, but voice heavy concern over regiment creation.

Re: Only War!

As am I. I like the Regiment rules but they are hard to decide on with a committee. So send me the invite when you are ready.

Re: Only War!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get around the whole regiment building problem, it sounds like Rouge Trader, and plenty of games have fallen to character creation.  I myself am open to anything, except I had an idea that I have been using with all my games now on RPoL.  Solo missions with interaction with other characters, so semi-solo.  That being said I had the idea of building a light RECON, tank regiment.  So everyone can post at the rate they post at and be in a separate situation as the other PC's who run a tank as well.  Suggestions, feedback, it would all be helpful.  Thanks Forum, you rock the socks off of 40K.

Re: Only War!

Do you want the long version or the short version? Long version first, short version last.

Only way I see around the whole "Group Regiment Creation Process" that is part and parcel of Character Creation is for you to design the regiment to tell the kind of tale you want to tell, and to limit our choices for actual character archetypes by what seems reasonable. That being said, while a Tank Regiment may at first seem like a good idea for a semi-solo adventure it also puts a lot of strain on you to be the rest of the supporting cast, be it the rest of the tank crew or the infantry outside your tank which will inevitably follow up behind the armored push to hold the ground we take and to guard our flanks from anti-tank infantry. Regardless to your efforts however RPOL by it's very nature of Play-By-Post will limit our activity by the activity of the slowest poster in the group, as such one should not worry about player post rate or worry about allowing one player to post faster than another, but instead one should worry about GM post rate which will be bogged down heavily by the necessity of playing all supporting cast for each of our individual stories should you go down the semi-solo adventure style.

In short my suggestion is that you pick the Regiment and what Archetypes would work for said Regiment and the story you wish to tell, but don't become overly fixated on supporting a semi-solo adventure style because it will be an unnecessary stress on you the GM who has enough to worry about without interacting with us incessantly.

Now if you have trouble actually building the Regiment itself, don't fret, there are pre-built regiments available that would only require the tiniest bit of alteration to fit whatever style of Regiment you want them to be.

In reply to Sarge (msg # 102):

I agree I'd scrap the semi-solo missions Idea. It's pretty rough to keep up with player demands.

Re: Only War!

I personally see the regiment creation as an important part of chargen, given the difference it can make to what your characters are capable of. I'd caution against a tank regiment though, it is very hard to balance for, and tanks are damn near invulnerable to everything except mass lascannon fire.

I'd prefer we do regiment creation, but guided by the GM so it fits with what he had prepared for us.

Re: Only War!

but a smart opponent could take a tank with traps, ambushes, and or at least a mass infantry assault(even an grenade can damage a tank)

Don't know about you guys, but I'd really like to play in a Penitent regiment... Don't really mind the doctrine we're trained in.

Re: Only War!

Thought I'd check if there was any interest in an Only War game taking into account the new options from the 'Hammer of the Emperor' supplement, with some exceptions (Armored, Cavalry, Atillery regiments etc.). The game would use the regimental creation process, mostly because I think it helps build common ground among the players.

Re: Only War!

I have to get those books.  All I have Only War wise is the beta book and I've no idea how much of it is still relevant.

Re: Only War!

I have heard some mixed results on the "Hammer", my local store didn't carry it, again another title they are behind on.  What is your take on it Crownblade.  Thanks as always.

Re: Only War!

I'm starting up a small Only War game taking a maximum of five players. The game will be going through the regimental creation process before starting, but I'm aiming to keep the pace of said process high. The game itself will of course include combat, but not overly so, I will try to explore the rp side of the game as well. The game is rated adult, more for the sake of not having to worry about rating than anything else. So if this sounds like something you might enjoy, then throw me an RTJ.

I'd love to give this game a shot.  Anyone have a spot in a game I could fill, or mind running a game that I could play in?

Re: Only War!

Unfortunately I seem to have lost a couple of players. The group has already undergone the regimental creation process, but have yet to start the game properly, and any prospective replacements would have to be willing to go along with the result. Specifically I'm looking for a new operator and a sergeant. The former players have yet to post anything IC so anyone taking over would be able to create a whole new char. instead of simply taking over an existing one. If this sounds like some worth taking a look at, then throw me an RTJ.

Re: Only War!

Looking for an Only War game that the GM doesn't abandon right after takeoff. I have never seen one of these last. Something pretty standard like Line Infantry would be fine with me.

I'd very much prefer the nonrandom character generation, as random chargen has never sat very well with me.

Re: Only War!

I'm not sure why OW games seem to die so quickly.  And usually it's not that the characters get wiped out and the game goes to hell but it just stops.

I've never had one that lasted much past getting the regiment set up and maybe a little bit of combat.

Re: Only War!

I've recently seen Rogue Trader get a revolving GM treatment.  Made me wonder if that would work well with Only War.
