Re: Upstairs in the Inn

She watched him hook up the contraption for a second.  It was one of the many things in her life she didn't fully understand, but accepted.  She had a feeling she could question and study for eternity and still not really understand.  Absently she picked up a sandwhich took a bite and grimaced.

That's pretty awful. She said putting the sandwhich back down.  She had eaten worse and would've still eaten the sandwhich if she had to, but since they didn't have to...

I'm gonna go arrange things and get something more appetizing.  You okay here? Need anything? She asked, pausing at the door.

He closes his eyes for a moment, he can feel the nano's moving through his system, he can feel the repairs on his leg starting to go into effect.  "Food, lots of it, a shower, clean clothes."  What he wants most of all, what he truly needs most of all, is for her to return.

He sits back in the chair again closing his eyes and letting the tiny machines run their course.

She smiled, noded once and replied, I'll see what I can do.  Glancing back at him as she left, she added, I'll be back.

Re: Upstairs in the Inn

Concern and stress is an every day part of his life.  When you have been a runner for as long as he had, you can never forget about your enemies.  This tavern was one of the few places that he really had little to worry about.

When she leaves, he falls into the automatic routine of checking and cleaning his weapons.  One at a time, each pistol is unloaded, disassembled, cleaned, put back together and reloaded.  Despite his shortened hand, each one takes less than a minute.  He silently curses the damage that so limits his left hand now.  It is instinctive that he protects his right hand, even to the point of sacrificing his left.

Re: Upstairs in the Inn

It took her a few minutes to go downstairs, nod to others and talk to the bar keep.  She ordered a fair amount of food and negotiated supplies to get cleaned up with.

Time had passed quickly for her, when she arrived back upstairs,, two towels and a key in hand.

I ordered a lot of food. I claim one third of it. She smiled at him,   She dropped towels on a small table. You can do mine too, if you want. She teased, watching his actions for a second.

Lots of people talked about cleaning weapons as something soothing, focusing... she hated it.  It wasn't that for her, but a necessary evil.  Worse, it was like tending to race car, thoroughbreed, or she supposed child, you couldn't just let anyone do it.  It was something that had to be tended to by one self or someone with you had great trust.

The gruff looking one down there said they'd bring up a bath, but there's a shower at the end of the hall.  She'd started to gather clothing.  I'm heading there, it won't take me long. She now had armful of clothing towel and other sundry items.

The act of taking care of his weapons very much puts him in a zen state.  He can do it without conscious thought.  When she mentions cleaning her firearm, he has to give a small smile as he holds out his hand to take it.  "Are you still carrying around that antique pop gun?"

"I'll try and save some of the food for you."

She crossed to pick up the gun she'd brought, and handed it to him. No, I have a new antique pop gun.  She handed it to him with a raised eyebrow and hint of a smile. But lately, I've been prefering sawed off shot guns, to tell you the truth.

I'll be back soon. She shook her head and left the room.

It was ten minutes later she returned wearing a simliar, but clean outfit. Now clutching dirty clothes instead of clean.  All yours, She set a key down on a clean towel and set down the other things she was carrying.

While she was gone, he does indeed completely disassemble her Glock 9mm, stripping it down, cleaning each component then reassembling and reloading it.  He had to shake his head at the small caliber handgun.  He knew in her time and place, a 9mm was an adequate weapon, but in his when and where, the advancements in personal body armor made the round impractical.  The standard caliber for a heavy pistol in his where and when was 12.7mm.

The food had come up less than a minute before she returned, and it had taken two of the tavern maids to bring it all up.  She had indeed ordered a large amount of consumables.

"Hey Nessa."  He takes the key, setting it on the table in front of himself.  "I'll go after we eat something."

He offers her handgun, butt first before starting in on the food.

She gave an affirmative nod, and took the gun. She looked at it and smiled.  He'd done a nicer job that she would have, and  was greatful he had made no comment about what bad shape it probably was in to start with.

That smells great, I'm starving. Habit, she put the gun at the base of her back.  She sat and started to eat.

Okay... I've been thinking about this...my theory is that when the portal in my world started to get deconstructed, it pulled me out of your world.  Then, since the spot in mine was completely destroyed, it sent me to whereever it could.

He tears into the food with some gusto.  On a daily basis, his body used more than 4000 calories, when he had to do some healing, it used significantly more.
At far as her idea on what happened and why, he can only nod.  Magical theory was not his specialty, that is why he kept mages close by.  "Interesting, but impossible to test out.  And I have to say, I am fine with skipping the testing phase.  A reason, any reason is easier to accept than just 'the universe is fragging with us.' "

As they sit and eat, he can't help but look at her and smile.  "You do look much better."   He was still wearing the tattered pants, the right boot all but shredded.  Food was more important than getting cleaned up, but only marginally.

She'd nodded, Everything has a reason... She said, then glanced up at him to meet his eyes, rather than the food she too was devouring hungrily. And I believe that every other day.  She chuckled at her self.

I feel better. She glanced to him again, You're color is better.  But I'll feel better still once one of your doctors checks you out.  She was trying to not rush him, though she was tempted to.  In her world issues of health or wellness time was always an issue.  She recognized that was not necessarily true of his, and she trusted his judgement, but it was still difficult.

He holds up his left hand, looking at the missing digits.  "They will have to construct a new hand, will take about a week.  Everything else should be done in that time frame."

His whole hand comes down to rest on hers.  "Thanks, I needed this."   He has eaten a large portion of the food and sits back for a moment, closing his eyes.  "I'll get cleaned up, then we can talk about where we are going."

He stands moving to pick out a set of clothes to wear.  He regrets the loss of the armored long coat, he has nothing to replace it with him, but it is only a coat and the likely hood they will encounter something hostile at the inn is minimal.

She winced at his hand, imagining pain and difficulty.  She had no conception of what his doctor's could do and was merely trying to take her calm and reaction from him.  This was not entirely reasonable, she knew, as she did not believe for a milisecond that he would truely be that direct with her, but she also thought he wouldn't lie.  So it was the best she could do.  And in truth, she was simply happy to see him alive, everything else was managable.

She smiled and shook away his thanks, it was unneeded.  Okay, you get cleaned up, then we'll figure out where we are going. She agreed.

He gives her shoulder a reassuring squeeze before he turns and walks out the door.  There is no visible sign of a limp and he carries his clean clothes draped over his left arm.

He moves into the bath area, checking the room before settling into the hot water.  Even in this place, a handgun is never more than a foot from his hand.  The left hand slows him a bit, but not too much.  He washes off the rest of the dried blood and smeared in dirt.  The whole time he is in there he is thinking about what had happened, how they had gotten separated.  He glances down at the water, dyed red.

He finds himself rushing in order to finish up and get dressed.  As he climbs out, he looks himself over before glancing at the mirror, looking at where the new scars would have been if not for the kid magi down stairs.

He is reentering the room, he hasn't even bothered with his dirty clothes, preferring to throw them in the garbage.  There hadn't been enough worth trying to save.  Now that his hair is clean, it is noticeable that there is slightly more gray in it than last time.  "I feel much better."  The food and bath were the least parts of his greatly improved feeling.

Good! She answered with conviction.  What do you think we are returning into? She was back to all business, approaching this trip as a mission.  She wanted it done and completed.

"If we can return through the portal, then we will likely return to a situation that has been resolved one way of the other.  My allies were withdrawing, but will be back fairly quickly.  It depends on whether or not those that were attacking are willing to stick around for what amounts to a pile of rubble."

He gives the smallest shrug.  "We may not be able to go back until the rubble has been cleared away."  She doesn't look like she has aged a day in the their time apart, but then again, she hardly looked her age.

She frowned at the last.  She had been trying to be patient about this.  If it had been her choice, the way he'd looked upon arrival she would have prefered to turn immediately and go back.  Granted he was looking better, but that was not enough for her.  She was also fully aware of the hypocritical nature of this.  She would generaly scoff at going to a doctor.  But his physiology was different from hers, among other things that she justified.

Okay, well, then I guess we have to cross that bridge when we get to it.  Anything you think I should know before we go?

He looks at her for a few seconds before answering.  "Yes."    "Even without the body armor, I can take a lot more punishment that you.  Stay behind me.  We can't afford to let your blood hit the ground.  I know the terrain, I will move towards cover, you have to be my shadow."

He collects up what remains of his gear, putting it all back in the bag.  His own weapons are loaded and holstered.

She stood up a little straighter, starting to open her mouth to argue with him.  But there was no arguement.  He was right, and she deflated, but only slightly.  Getting her back up was habit, but in this case not needed.  It was his acceptance that she take point on their very first trip through the portal together that had made her notice him to begin with.

Okay. She said with a bit of resign, her hands going up in surrender that she would not protest. There were some things one didn't fight.  He had agreed to go back, she was not going to overly push her luck.

A single eye brow goes up in surprise.  He had expected an argument, her acquiescence gave him pause and made him a bit nervous.   He has gone through the gear that they had in the bags, taking out what they may need.  He had remembered her work with a shotgun and wished he had one along, but the one she had used before was back in his place in Redmond.  "OK then.  Did you need anything else before we left?"

Acceptance did not mean she was happy about it.  She clearly wasn't.  But she had no good argument either.  She stood, looking not all that happy, but resigned.

She pulled out her gun, examined it, and glanced at him, Suitable? Or do you have something more...apprpriate? She asked.

Weapons, he knows... he grins slightly, reaching to the small of his back and pulling out the sleek, thin barreled pistol.  "Ares Viper Mark II, it is a silenced, flechette pistol.  It can cut through most ballistic armor like warm butter."  He offers the butt to her then pulls out 2 spare clips.  "Each clip holds 30 flechettes, it can fire on single fire or 3 round burts.  It has a gas dispersal, internal recoil compensator but still kicks like a troll in burst fire mode.  The selector switch is at your thumb.  Biometric safety switch is off."

He starts to move towards the door, no need to wait any longer.

Nessa couldn't help but smile.  She understood him.

Accepting the weapon, she listened carefully, familiarized herself with it and tucked it into a spot that was comfortable and easily accessible.  Thank you, She answered warmly, as if talking about more than merely a weapon.

She took a deep breath as he headed toward the door.  She wanted this over with, though she couldn't help but also be apprehensive.  She followed, already alert and on guard.

He moves to the top of the stairs, nodding in acceptance of the gratitude.  Loaning out a weapon was something new to him.  "I am going to pay for the room for another month."  He really had no idea how long had passed in this world since they had last met here.

As he walks, he again feels the absence of his armored coat, feeling almost naked, but does not hesitate in his movements.  He projects an aura of confidence and falls into the old habit of moving like a predator, his head moving back and forth slowly, surveying all before him.

She gave a nodding shrug.  She wasn't sure it was necessary.  But then she wasn't sure that it wasn't, either.  Certainly there was no harm in it.

Following him, she tried to picture the portal in his world, picturing it without any incident, and made a silent wish that things went smoothly.

Feeling reassured by the weight of the gun, she took a long slow breath and followed him.
