Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Love the flash back!

You turn away from the snake-demon and throw yourself against a lower outcropping.  You haven't much skill at this sort of thing, but given the circumstances your paternal drive won't allow you to fail.  With a crash you slam into the jagged underbelly of the cliff.  As jarring as that is, you are able to catch a fairly decent grip.
But your troubles--and this fight--are far from over.
Morotha stands on the edge, looking at you.  Her laughter had halted, but now she appears more determined than ever to kill you.  She focuses on the rocks from which you cling to save what is left of you seemingly short life.  And it isn't until now that you realize that you've been cut by Morotha just before you jumped...
The rocks above you begin to tremble!  A sudden gail of force whirls above your head, dropping an avalanche of rock down on you; however you mage armor spell sends anything bigger than sand pebbles bouncing harmlessly down the ravine.

08:24, Today: Dungeon Master rolled 22,6 using d20+10,d6+4 with rolls of 12,2. Morotha AoO vs Stan (AC 15).
08:44, Today: Dungeon Master rolled 12,8 using d20+7,d10. Telekinesis violent thrust (Stan AC 14).

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

There might not be another lucky miss like that one!

The wound in Stan's shoulder ceases to hurt almost as quickly as he notices it. It will smart badly later, but right now the adrenaline and danger mask the pain.

"Demios," he whispers. "How are things up there? Is Clementine fighting against the hold spell? When she comes out of it I'm going to jump and wait for one of you to catch me."

He's between a rock and a hard place. If he tries to climb around, he might fall quite literally into the abyss. If he stays put, a telekinetic shock could send him there anyway. He needs to find a better avenue of movement.

Is there a ledge nearby, or a place where he can brace himself against a corner (-5 DC) or two walls -10 DC)?

With no refuge in sight, Stan hangs tight and waits for his family to get back to him.

going to delay to hear what Demios has to say and, if possible, to wait for Clementine to make another check. (but I don't want to delay past Morotha's turn.)

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

"No!" Stan shouts. He begins to scrabble up the cliff edge, but the handhold is already unstable from Morotha's blast. Stones skitter around the adventurer as one hand falls free.

20:53, Today: Stan Fetchin rolled 9 using 1d20.

He catches himself and tries a second time, but with even worse effect! Now he is holding on by barely a few fingers.

20:55, Today: Stan Fetchin rolled 6 using 1d20. second climb check.

He had planned on getting over the top and helping, but it seems apparent that trying to climb right now will only get them all killed. Instead, he calms himself momentarily and then does what he can to stabilize the portal, freeing Demios to focus on combat.

21:05, Today: Stan Fetchin rolled 35 using 1d20+15. Arcana/the planes to stabilize portal.
Action point natural 20!

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Here is how I'm thinking this went down:  the DC to climb this wall is 15, with no modifiers (nothing to brace against, not slippery).  You failed the first check by 6, enough to fall.  I can/will treat your second check as your attempt to catch yourself,  DC 25, which you've also failed.  You've now fallen 60 feet straight down.

Keep you natural twenty for your next roll, whatever that may be.  I'm the meantime, we shall assume that your connection with Demios still holds...

You slip and fall, the red, dry rock-face zips past you in a blur!  There is some commotion above you, but you are unable to make out what it is.  After a few seconds an ear splitting shriek assails your eardrums, and you are suddenly no longer falling.  Instead, you feel yourself slowly shift the speed in which you are taking, and your body seems to be spreading outward.
You continue to slow at an incredible pace, until you feel your direction reverse.  You are launched upwards a few feet, but are instantly brought back down.  You are stuck, spread-eagle and yet gently hovering somewhere in a ravine, in the Abyss.
Taking a quick moment to look around, you realize you are laying in a giant spider's web, spanning the crevice.

Stan gingerly reaches for the dagger at his side, if his arm is still free.

Roll what you need to if there's a break free roll or % chance to be stuck or a save or anything like that.

Standard action: 19:05, Today: Dungeon Master, on behalf of Stan Fetchin, rolled 20 using 1d20+2. CMB (DC 17).

The sounds of battle waft down to you.  You test the webbing, and find that you are able to break free of their sickly hold.
”M'lord?”

You still have a move action this round; but the webbing is considered difficult terrain.

I don't have a rope, but I can make you fly.

Still looking up, you see Demios crest the lip of the gorge.  He pauses only a second to ensure you are in fact alright, before spinning around to deflect a series of blows from Morotha.

"What?" Stan's incredulous tone couldn't be more fatherly if he had practiced it: a careful mix of disgust, disappointment, and pride. "Why didn't you say so earlier?

"Jumped off the gods-damned cliff for no reason. Could have been flying..."

"Alright, then, son, let's bring the magic." He stretches out his arms, expecting to feel the magical lift at any moment.

Demios' face appears over the lip of the canyon.  He spits the arcane verbiage in a no-nonsense short of way.  Almost immediately you feel the magical energies wash over you.
Before any more can be said, he sound around and the sounds of combat continue to ring out loudly.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Stan is proud that his child is capable in the Arcane arts, even if that skill came relatively naturally to him. The words lack the refinement of an educated mage, but now is neither the time nor the place to worry about such niceties.

The levitate spell is no good without something solid to hold onto, so Stan begins to walk across the sticky web towards the cliff face.

Moving towards the wall, then levitating up in a relatively safe place.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

We'll fast-forward a few combat rounds, for ease...

You begin to make your way over to the edge of the web. As you near the cliff face, Demios swoops over you, still relatively level with the surface, his wings aiding him. A moment later, his web vanishes!
You focus and start ascending upward (20 feet/round). As you near the top, the sounds of steel on steel assail your ears.

You finally crest the lip of the ridge and look on as your son is locked in mortal combat with the deadly Marilith. Like a deadly (and cliché) dance, the two move almost as one, their demonic fighting styles mirroring one another. To your surprise, Demios is doing very well!
You notice only a few new cuts on him; however Morotha appears unscathed. Despite all you have been through with him today, his appears winded and maxed out; doing all he can to simply sustain against her fury.
For a moment, you and he lock eyes. In that moment, she forces him to react without his full attention, forcing him into an awkward parry. Her twin blades, a pair of heavy cutlasses, slice through his enchanted double-sword at its hilt, severing the weapon into two useless (albeit wonderfully crafted) halves. Weaponless, your son quickly back-peddles away from his grandmother...

Your initiative

Morotha slithers toward her grandson, obviously intent on returning what demonic part of him remains recycling through the Abyss; but then she notices you.
She launches herself into a dazzling attack and lands a blow, but her later swings are sloppy and cause her to awkwardly drop one of her longswords
