Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Floor one....... clear he says aloud humorously before following the others up to face whatever challenges the next.floor presented. Never in his wildest dreams did he think a few weeks back, that he'd be trapped un a dungeon for weeks, then fighting demons in the abysall plane. What month! The pay was good though.........

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

The stairwell opens up to a larger chamber some hundred feet above the entrance hall below.  The climb up was long and tenacious, but in true abyss-style, any reprieve you had hoped to gain here is short-lived.  A glimmering barrier blocks further use of the staircase; but sounds of battle ring-out from above, promising further conflict.
This appears to be some kind of alchemist laboratory.  Tables dominate this floor, each have been setup with tomes and vials and other eldritch things.  One table even carries a splayed demon, left in mid-dissection.

"Spread out," Demios says once the party has achieved the laboratory level.  "There should be a switch somewhere here to deactivate the wall of force.  And be on the lookout.  This is where Morothâ's agents perform their research.  There could be any number of treasures here."

Stan knew that even given several weeks of peaceful study, he could never sort through all the material present here. Rather than try to take in the whole room, he started at the first table and made an effort to interpret the contents.

17:35, Today: Stan Fetchin rolled 15 using 1d20+10. Knowledge (Arcana).

Hennesey assumes that by "treasures", Demios means nothing of the sort. Meaning horrendous abominations most likely. He's not the best at searching in detail, but if there was something be spotted or heard...... Hennesey's sharp senses would pick it up.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Together, the group spreads out to search this layer of Morothâ's tower.  Verily, the sites here are incredible, if not too macabre.  Certainly, whatever has sparked the genre on the material plane must have spawned here, deep within the Abyss.  Stan's mind reels as he gazes at the tables nearest the stairs, looking at and trying to identify the many vials of colored liquids and otherworldly contraptions.  Many bear numerous spikes, dials, and etched runes; and nearly everything appears stained a deep shape of crimson.  He is both attracted and repulsed by many of the strange things he sees here; but keeps the image of his wife at the forefront of his mind.
Chubbs wanders around the ruined laboratory aimlessly.  He appears to be searching for something, but it is obvious by the blank look on his cherubic face that he has no clue what it is he is looking for.
Demois moves out to the balcony and looks down at the battle still going on both below and above them.  "Stay clear," he warns, having to shout over the shouts and cries of demons as they fight each other.  "Morothâ and her agents will most likely carry some enchantment or another which they can use to pass through these barriers.  We'll be looking for something bearing the symbol of her lord, Bhaal.  Perhaps a bloody skull or some such nonsense."

As Demios speaks, Hennessey moves a little further away, still looking for something that might defeat the barrier.  Luck shines on Hennessey as he does find something which he believes to be connected with the barrier: a bas-relief carving of a skull carved into the stone on the wall just south of the stairwell.  Looking around the lab, he sees that it would be easy to reach it if the western side of the tower had not been so ruined as it is.  Presently, he figures that the fastest way to the glyph would to have Demios fly to it with his wings.
However, before he says anything, he notices a low, wet rhythmic droning; almost like a gurgling.  He isn't sure where it is coming from, but it is close.  He looks around again, but given the strange things in the laboratory, he isn't too keen on what is what.
That is, until one of the statues nearest Chubbs, or what he thought were statues, suddenly moves.  It brings up its strange polearm and thrusts it at the halfling!  Just before it strikes him, the business end opens up and clamps down hard on Chubbs' neck!  He struggles, but is unable to break himself free.  With little effort, the demon lifts him from the ground...

Initiative, plus Round One action(s)

Hennesey wastes no time in dangerously charging the new demon who has one mean Stangle Hold(lol) Chubbs. Still the ranger risks his life for his new friend without thinking of the consequesnces for himself. He charges the creature and intends to put all of his might into the attack. His attack wasnt how he was hoping it would be, a bit off to say the least. But he hoped he has caught the demon off gaurd and unable to perry his blow.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Stan took out the wand they had found in Tharur. It was little more than a piece of darkish wood, snapped nearly in half and hastily wired together with a small length of copper. To the uninitiated it might have seemed a piece of garbage. The wand's broken appearance was, however, part of the item's sympathetic magic.

With a few words of power, the wizard directed the wand at the demon's staff. An obnoxious ear-shattering ring poured forth from the wand.

Standard: shatter (33 charges remaining)
The staff gets a will save to avoid being sundered.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Round One
Seeing his companion at the mercy of the hideous demonoid, Hennessey charges with reckless abandon!  His attack is mighty, but not quite good enough to catch the demon in his frenzy.  His axe bites deep into the pillar just beside his target.
Demios spins around and regards the monsters and issues a heavy sigh.  He raises his right hand and points at the creature holding Chubbs.  "Halt," he commands the demon.  To everyone's surprise, the monster's eyes seem to glaze.
Chubbs squirms while being held easily a foot and a half above the ground.  Feeling the bite of the contraption gripping his throat, he becomes desperate.  He tosses his dagger at the monster; but misses horribly.  The dagger sails over the side of the balcony...
Stan retrieves the wand they recovered from the chest in TharĂĽr Castle and envokes its power.  He cleverly aims its effects very carefully, centering it on the demon's (a creature known as a Rutterkin, he remembers) weapon, a common weapon among the species known as a snap-tong.  A high-pitched whine fills the air and the iron weapon explodes into several pieces, dropping Chubbs to the floor in a heap.
The Rutterkin (1) stands idly as if dumbfounded, the subject to Demios' command...
From the clutter somewhere behind Stan, another Rutterkin (2) leaps out, swinging his snap-tong wildly!  The blade cuts into him as the catch connects with the wizard, and latches onto Stan's left arm!

Stan is grappled

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Round Two
Feeling the momentarily distracted/held Rutterkin no longer poses a threat to himself or his companions, Hennessey turns and charges the other one now engaged with Stan.  Again his rush is filled with anger and fury; and again his reckless attack misses.
Seeing Hennessey charge the newest demon, Demios shifts his focus back to the one he had held.  He knew the limitations of the magic effect, and he knew the Rutterkin wouldn't be held for much longer.  He fought the urge to charge headlong into the demon himself, but ultimately decided against it, as the lab was filled with many obstacles to hinder him.  Instead, he slides up to the monster and executes an attack with his double-bladed sword; but the demon dodges.
Chubbs tumbles to the creature's backside (flanking with Demios) and slashes at it with his magical blade!  The wound it suffers is decent; but it appears that these demons can take a lot more damage…
Stan keeps cool in this seemingly terrifying situation, being held by the demon's snap-tong weapon.  He reaches over with his free hand and activates the wand once more, shattering the snap-tong and freeing himself.  Once free, he also shifts back about 5-feet, allowing Hennessey to deal with the now weaponless creature.
Rutterkin (1), now also weaponless, turns to face the mortal halfing.  Even without its snap-tong, Rutterkin are fierce opponents.  It launches itself against Chubbs, tearing at him with its clawed hands.  The bard's defenses are beaten, but also prevent the demon from inflicting anything more than a light wound.
Rutterkin (2) also resorts to attacking Hennessey with its claws.  It easily gets its hooks on the ranger after his brash charging maneuver, and administers to him another light wound.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Stan puts the wand away and draws his dagger. He circles around Hennesey, waiting to see if either demon will present an opening. He cannot offer an experienced assault like his allies, but an inexpert jab is better than standing around.

Standard: Switch to dagger
Move: Circle around and maybe try to flank, if safe.

Round Three
Hennessey presses his attack on Rutterkin_2.  He swings his axe wildly at the demon, but misses.
Likewise, Demios presses his attack against Rutterkin_1.  He slices into the demon, but the monster's natural defenses seem to resist his blades.
Chubbs attacks the same demon Demios has just injured, but form the opposite side.  He misses.
Stan moves into a flanking position opposite Hennessey.
The Rutterkin (1) turns its wrath and fury onto Chubbs.  It lunges at him, but the halfling deftly its awkward attack.
The Rutterkin (2) snarls at Stan and swipes at him!  He catches the wizard and sinks its claws deep into him, tearing through his flesh.

Stan is put off by the ferocity of the demon's attack. After contemplating the gaping wound in his own shoulder, Stan backs off and gives the creature space. He hopes that Hennesey will be able to keep the thing at bay.

Disengaging and moving away from the demons. I believe Hennesey still gets a flanking bonus, as his initiative is before Stan's.

Missing this many attacks was very uncharacteristic of Hennesey. But then again he's never been to the Abysall Plane to fight demons before either. In fact not a whole lot of of people have and returned to talk.another it.  But he had better learn how real quick, less he fall victim and die here. He focuses this anger of missing into the most perfect.strike, nearly cleaving the demon in two. That's better he thought to himself, very pleased with the results.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Round 4
Hennessey delivers a devastating chop against the Rutterkin antagonizing Stan.  The blow is powerful, and the ranger succeeds in cleaving the demon's head from its mangled shoulders.
Demios continues his barrage against the remaining Rutterkin.  He scores a minor hit.
Chubbs takes advantage of Demios' presence and presses the demon from its opposite side.  He sinks his blade into the creature's back, but it still remains—and its' demonic nature seems to continue to resist the halfling's blade.
Stan, now free from the slain Rutterkin's attention, turns his focus to more pressing matters—like not dying.  He takes a moment to catch his breath and stop the room from spinning.
The remaining Rutterkin barks in defiance at Chubbs' attack.  It swipes at him again, but is simply too slow to best the halfling's natural nimbleness.
