Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Round Four
Stan moves about the chamber, dodging the manes and clouds of acidic vapor.  As he nears the gate, the eye quickly shuts and holds itself closed.  Stan isn't sure what that means, or how to open the gate...
Hennesey continues hacking at the small demons as he too dodges the vapor.  He lands a solid blow on a nearby mane, reducing it to more acidic vapor. Ref SV Hennesey & Chubbs
Chubbs does what he can to also avoid the acidic vapor.  The halfling lands a decent blow in his own right, but the demon's natural resistance to his weapon causes the blade to turn.

Stan gently presses the key against the eye to see if the abjuration magic will have any effect. If there's no response, he might start forcing things.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Hennesey's plan to tumble away has worked, as he easily dodges the gas cloud. After recovering, he takes another step back as he changed weapon tactics, drawing his deadly accurate bow. But something was off with his shot. Perhaps the strings had become damaged.... perhaps Hennesey was rusty...... whatever the cause, it was unknown to him as he missed his shot wide to the left and the other arrow wide right. ...........Damn....

Round Five
Despite the burning acid at his back Stan presses the dagger to the closed eye-lid.  It remains closed, and so does the gate.  He does feel a faint shimmer in the magical energies surrounding the eye...
Hennessey moves back and fires an arrow at the nearest mane.  His shot is wide.
Chubbs swings again, and misses.

The vapor cloud continues to burn...

Round Six
Stan continues to try to jab the eye with the blade, however it remains closed tight...  How can he get the lid open?
Hennessey takes another step back (15-ft) and looses another arrow at the mane.  His arrow strikes and reduces the little demon to more vapor (Chubbs & Stan Ref SV).
Chubbs tries to stab at the remaining mane, but misses.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Hennesey now takes aim at the remaining Mane. It will produce more vapor, but he could easily shout for the others to clear out until the cloud dissipates before working further on the gate's lock.

He decides that he will go with his first thought as they must stop the threat as soon as possible to help save Demios as quickly as possible.  Clear away from the vapor until the last one is slain!!

Attack Action: Rapid Shot vs last Mane

Stan is still unable to solve the magical riddle. Frustrated, he throws the blade in the general direction of the mane. The magic key bounces off the walls and floors but does little to help the situation.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Finally the last mane is destroyed but as with the others, there is one last acid cloud to dodge. Having thought he was far enough away to not be affected by it, Hennesey is unable to escape as he had before. Having been susceptible to the gas, his attempt to check thier abysal guide is horribly botched.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Hennessey makes quick work of the last of the manes, reducing the fat little demons to pools of steaming acid.  Together, the party remains cautious enough to skirt around the worst of the burning liquid, and long enough for it to... evaporate, for lack of a better term.

Wasting no time, Hennessey crouches over Demios' body and tries to determine the best way to revive him.  Finding none, he looks up to the others and shrugs his shoulders in defeat.

"I think he's dead," says he as he shakes his head.  "He's torn up worse'n a foxling by a litter of hounds."  He regains his footing and stands, and is about to go looking for the key Stan had tossed away when Demios' chest suddenly heaves.

"He's alive!" Chubbs cries as he nurses his own scrapes and burns.  "Stan, do something!"

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Stan tries to remember anything he can about the physiology of infernal creatures. How does one heal an agent of destruction?

"Demios, hang in there."

Without a cleric, they are hard pressed to save anyone, much less someone from another plane of existence. Stan is careful not to make any promises about preserving Demios' life. He knows that might not happen.

10:07, Today: Stan Fetchin rolled 25 using 1d20+15. Knowledge (Planes).

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Success:
Your first instinct is to snatch Chubbs' magical healing wand, but your knowledge of the Abyssal denizens causes you pause.  You recall the acidic blood from the creatures (the manes specifically), although developed to maim the subject's attacker, or in some situations kill the attacker by attrition, is frequently used as a poisonous substitute, as it tends to cling to living matter.  Healing Demios through magical means will only prolong his suffering until it is cleaned off his body.

Thinking quickly, you instruct Hennessey to help you remove the bulk of his armor, as to attempt to clean the wounds; all the while keeping Chubbs at the ready should his breathing cease.

OOC:
Please feel free to go into additional detail regarding your skill usage.  Skill Challenges, in my opinion, are opportunities for a player to take hold of the storytelling reins a wee-bit, and use the skills he's been building in creative and innovative ways. =)

And from a game mechanic standpoint, the better I understand how you're using a skill (and many times, the more creative it is), I might apply a bonus to your check.

Re: Stan—Morothâ Assault

Although caught in a traumatic situation, Stan relishes the opportunity to increase his planar and alchemical knowledge first-hand. The acid blood of the manes is nothing like he's ever encountered on the Prime Material. He quickly scoops a gob of ichor onto a debris shard and begins to heat the substance by means of a prestidigitation spell.

"Now," he says more to himself than anyone else, "just to make sure." With the other hand he does almost the same thing, chilling the blood instead. To anyone watching, he would himself look like some demonic aspect - a living scale balancing hot blood against cold.

He brings both specimens together and watches them, careful not to let them touch - the normal heat transfer would ruin the experiment, but the magical exchange would be far worse.

"Ah. Just as I thought."

Using prestidigitation along with craft (alchemy) to see if I can learn anything about the blood and how its effects might be treated.

17:51, Today: Stan Fetchin rolled 21 using 1d20+13. Alchemy.

Failure
You watch the experiment closely, but a weak groan from Demios steals you attention--causing you to miss the reaction.
” Stan!” cries Chubbs. The halfling taps the other on the head with his wand, which seems to sooth the fiend ever so slightly.
