Re: OOC Chat
Hello! I just realized that I never actually communicated a change to the rules I implemented a little while ago. Looking over the dice log, however, you will be able to see that it's been enforce for a while, only if you understand what you're looking for. The rule pertains to Attacks of Opportunity (AoO).
When you have your character do something that would normally provoke an attack of opportunity, instead of the cheap free hit, the character preforms the action at a Disadvantage.
What does that mean? It means that you will roll 2d20 (plus applicable modifications) and keep the lowest result. So, for Stan's grapple (CMB) check, he rolled 2d20+3, which resulted in 19 and 13. 13 does not beat Bua Gorg's CMD, therefore Stan does not grapple him. Getting smacked in the head for trying to fight creatively never made much sense to me, but I always understood AoOs as a way to keep the special attacks challenging.
So, if provoking an AoO creates Disadvantage, is there such a thing as Advantage?
Yes. This is a little bit more loose. It is the same mechanic, only backwards; however the triggers are a little more difficult to explain. The easiest way to explain it is with Sawyer's Sneak Attack class feature. So, we all know that when Sawyer catches his target unaware he can deal extra damage. Using this new rule, whenever Sawyer catches his vict-, I mean, target unaware, he gains combat Advantage. Meaning, he rolls 2d20 (plus any/all applicable modifications), and keeps the higher result. If he hits, he deals Sneak Attack as per his character level.
Another, perhaps more relevant example would be Flanking. If you are flanking with an ally, you and your ally gain combat Advantage. Further, the poor sap in the middle has combat Disadvantage. We no longer have to track situational lowered AC, especially since AC is so low anyway, given the DR rules we've been playing with.
Rolling Advantage and Disadvantage is also easy using the Dice Roller. All you have to do is setup 2d20 +/- x in the roller, then select either "keep lowest" or "keep highest" from the General section, then type "1" in the field next to it. Once you roll the dice, it will record the appropriate result.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and as always, thanks for playing!!
