I will admit that it is a bit railroady, but I am trying to get Jon into the story. I figured it might be forgivable in that regard. Although I try to keep most of the game motivations buried in the in-game threads, we might all be better served talking about this out of character instead.
The Challenge of Champions is an adventuring competition being put on by the Witchwardens, and sponsored by an enigmatic guild known as the Seekers. I have been trying to drop story bread-crumbs for a little while, hoping that the Challenge would be something Stan found interesting before Jon even joined the game. As they are, here are some of the things I've been working on regarding Stan's involvement:
- The Witchwardens want Stan to join their ranks or quit practicing wizardry within the city limits. Expect them to approach him regarding the Challenge, and possibly joining their guild.
- The Jade Ravens (particularly Tolin Kientai) have taken issue with Lavinia's new chosen adventuring group. Expect Tolin to challenge Stan's group to an extra "friendly" competition.
- The Wurmfall festival is in full swing! This portion of the adventure path will be used as "downtime" for Stan, allowing him to craft items, purchase/sell items, and/or work on personal and side quests before the next adventure begins. Further, the festival should serve as a way for the GM to show the PCs that Sasserine is a living city.
If the Challenge of Champions really isn't something Stan would be interested in, or if he should choose to resist the hooks above, it's okay. I am planning things, but know that you don't have to bite.
Regarding Jon, he also has reasons for participating in the Challenge of Champions, and seeking out Stan and his group:
- Due to circumstances seemingly beyond his control, Jon owes a large debt. The Whaler’s Guild, with whom he's had good dealings, has decided to cover his monetary debt if he puts up a team to represent the guild at the Challenge.
- Jon's background is shrouded in secrecy, however he's earned a reputation as a dependable Shipmaster among the guild masters. Despite the fact that he's made Sasserine his port-of-call for the last 10 years, he knows very little of the city, and vice versa. Winning the Challenge would undoubtedly help his social status.
- The prize money would help him secure another ship.
