Re: The Deep Forest Fey

There was a theory of magic, an old, old theory- taught at the Academy mostly in a historical context… “Long ago it was thought”.  It held that names held hidden power over things.  It was mostly dismissed as superstition by modern wizards.

Not by the Fey, apparently.

”Take the name, take the nature,” Whootlebee says quietly.  “It’s always been so.”

(In pure game terms, for certain things, the characters that received names in this name ceremony can be considered to have the “Fey” type.)

Mintflip looks down at the ground.  “And a proud thing it is!  Yes, the Wicked Fey* will be aware of them… but they are aware of us, and here we are!  Let’s think nothing to it!

* * * * * * *

Food and drink arrive, both from the Fauns, and from the Pixies.  While the Fauns provide a meal with portions closer to the human norm (though not even a Faun eats as much as a big Human male) the Pixie dishes are ridiculously small, by comparison.  They make up for their small size with artistic presentation- food is served on tiny wooden platters on flowers and sprigs of wild herbs.  Berries that a Human might pop whole into the mouth are served carved into artful slices.

Togo and Mia are each presented with a tiny stoppered container, made from hollowed out hazel nuts.

”The elixir there will give you true Fey forms,” the Pixie says.  “Not forever.  It’ll where off.  It’s strong, just a drop will do, so I think these should do for four or five changes.”

Flitter has been thinking of names and meanings for a while, since Whootlebee brought it up, and asks him, “Whootlebee… how did you come to be called Oote?”

*  *  *  *  *

*There are evil fey creatures, of course.  These include the sadistic, thug-like Red Caps, the savage Quicklings, the toxic Nightshades all the way up the Unseelie, banned from this world but occasionally sneaking back to pursue their visions of absolute dominion.  Fey folk are a superstitious lot, and avoid using the term “Evil” when describing their awful cousins.  Hence, Wicked Fey is a popular term.  “Naughty” has also been used.

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

Morgan too wished to know what it was Flitter suspected.  And wondered that she avoided, or at least put off answering, Mia.   But perhaps it regarded Oote, and the question to him intended to answer it-?  She awaited to hear what Oote would say, enjoying the artful fare the pixies had served them, meanwhile.  She lifted Dean to one shoulder, and fed him a bit, further reflecting.

For her part, she had thought 'Oote' was probably just a truncation of 'Whootleby.'   Not in the true sense that 'Ootle' would be be.

But what serious minded individual could actually bear being known as Ootle?

"Oh! So Togo and I now have a fey nature? That's amazing though I am not sure what to think of it."

She sits with everyone careful not to accidentally sit on anyone. Mia smiles watching everyone else eat and enjoy the food. She would nibble to be polite trying to see if she could taste anything. Then accepts the gift with a slight nod and a look of wonder. "Thank you very much Mintflip. <blue> "When we take on a fey form would we get their abilities as well. For example pixies can become invisible and have dazzling magic. Korrigans can make a enemy dance just by dancing themselves. There is also the important detail of being able to fly as a pixie. I wouldn't want to be stuck running on the ground if I become your size! All of that aside thank you very much this is a very special gift."

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

“The berries… they don’t turn you into a specific Fey, there are so many kinds.  So many of us!  From the greatest Nymphs to the tiny Petals, helpful Brownies to savage Red Caps.  But the magic here will find a Fey form that is appropriate.”

He looks over Mia, and adds, “It will not be Red Cap.  I am sure.”

Then he turns to Togo.  “Brownie.  Without doubt, Brownie.  Or maybe… Korrigan.  Or Faun.  Humm.  Yes, I’m certain.”

Relaxation, with Dean off the ground and obviously under supervision.

Asked to explain his name, Whootlebee hovers in the air near Mystal and Flitter.  He sighs, and draws a deep breath, and speaks:

“Tis to be expected, one thinks.  The mortal folk are dark and serious and know many things. They learn and build and study, but still, every now and then, comes one who is more like a Fey, dancing through the world with hardly a care, seeing the wonders without wondering what they see.  Of course, for the world to be in balance, there would be an opposite!  I apologize dearly if I offend, but I long to see the world as the other folk do, know how a house, or steel is made… I have seen them do things from afar, they do not simply wish it and zap it, they labor, and pour out… and in… their hearts and souls.  And they look at flowers and trees and they think, they ask, will these grow better in the sun, or in the shade?  How many stones can that wagon hold before it breaks?  How many eggs will the hen lay before it is best used in the stew-pot?  All these things, they press themselves to, and I long to do that to, instead of just.. well, instead of living the life of  every Pixie.

“But there was more.  I found… I found that if I thought about things, instead of just enjoying them… I enjoyed less the ways of our birth.  I had… trouble… doing some Pixie things.  That is when I left.  The healer… I thought he would make me into something different.  I would be wise and learn all about the world.  I changed my name, myself, because I thought a break from my old life must be complete. “

Flitter objects to one of his premises.  “One can be a Pixie, and not live the same life as all Pixies,” She says.    “Am I not a Pixie?  But I have become important to them.  I know… a part of me would stay always in a perfect forest, I would play games with the flowers and chase butterflies like I always did.  But I will again, and… I am still a Pixie, am I not?”

Whootlebee looks at Flitter.  “You are very much a Pixie, but… what is Mystal?”

“I’m not sure.”  Flitter says.  “There are different kinds of Pixies, I have learned.  Just as the Spark is like a Pixie of Fire, I think, Mystal is like a Pixie of Water.  Or Air.  Or both.’

“Both?  Is that possible?  Wait…” Whootlebee thinks, and answers his own question.  “Rain comes from the air, so we know that Air and Water are friends, so maybe yes.”

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

She listens to Mystal looking slightly confused at first then nods slightly as she understands. "Oh. So the berries won't turn you into the fey of your choice. They bring out the inner fey in you. Or the one that you need at the moment I think."

She shivers at the thought of a red cap having had a encounter or two with them already. "I am glad it won't be that. It's tempting to try a drop just to find out which one I would become. Now is certainly a good time in the sense that there are plenty of fey to share time with and have fun. On the other hand it's a precious gift and it would be ironic if I didn't have a drop when I really needed it."

Listening to Whootlebee also known as Oote Mia nods slightly. "It sounds like your best of traveling with us Oote. In due time you will meet all sorts of interesting people. Blacksmiths that work with metal, Carpenters that build homes, cooks that make food at inns, soldiers, even wizards if we are lucky. That or if we go by Morgan's academy where there are bound to be a lot of them. Best of all you will still have a few fey friends to travel with like Flitter and Mystal so it won't just be all big folk."

Mia smiles at Mystal with a happy look. "Exploring certainly is exciting Mystal. I think we have a long way to go too. Speaking of exploring, Morgan are you going to use that magic book we found to find rare magic items that will help do good things?"

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

Oote’s little face lights with joy.  When he was among his tribe, they kept saying “Stop asking such un-silly questions!  Be a Pixie!”  And the Healer’s solution was “Don’t be a Pixie.”  But now… Mystal and Flitter and Mia all seem to agree he can have it all.  Investigate, learn, analyze… and still be a Pixie!

The fact that Flitter and Mystal are quite charming Fey maidens helps seal the deal, though Oote would certainly not admit it.  Even to himself.

“Then I shall!” he says.  “And as Mia says, we do have the book, the Healer’s Book!”

Mintflip gives him a look.  “You are a strange one, Whootlebee.  What does a Pixie want with a book?  If one fell on you, you would be squished.”

Flitter nods.  It is true, after all.

“But the book is Vitrix’s Codex of Artifacts of Power,” Oote says.  “The original!”

Now he gets more looks, from more Pixies.  He says sheepishly “I peeked, a little.” And then he continues.  “It is strong magic, and great power must have been used to conjure it.  I have never heard of a Fey who can do such things.  But I would like to learn… but the book, from what I have seen, is about magical artifacts.  And it changes… it writes itself… depending on what is near, and I have a feeling, important.”

“Important?” one of the Fauns asks.  “How does it know?”

Oote/Whootlebee shrugs.  “The more that I know, the more I know are the things that I do not know.”

“So what is in it?”  The Faun presses.  “You peeked, can you tell us?”

“Yes, I have stolen a peek or two.  Not the whole book.  The first page mentions an artifact in the treasure of Netcong, the Green Dragon.”

A murmur of worry passes through the assembled Fey, and one of the Fauns says with a shudder, “Netcong!”

Fraeguld, the oldest and most respected Faun, explains:  “The one who slew the Harpies at Erga.  And the Selkies that wandered there.  And others in the area, as I recall.  Not a good place to go.  The Druids supply the Dragon with gifts.”

Togo nods, and confirms.  “The Druids have gone there, now and then, delivering gifts to appease the Dragon.  They know that should Netcong every have a hissy-fit, the destruction could be great.”

“But that is only one thing in the Book,” Oote says.  “May we not choose?”

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

"It is well," concurred Morgan, as regarded Oote's choice to accompany the pair of Fey maids and the rest of them.  It definitely seemed the choice most in line with his heart and predilections.

She cocked a brow at the debate of what sort of pixie Mystal was.  Some surprised that they reckoned her one; for Morgan viewed her as something kindred, but different.

"Mystal is what my own studies would lead me to classify as a sprite. They are considered to be of the element of air, like the Sylphs. And there are water sprites as well, able to breathe in air or water, and able to fly like their aerial cousins.  Have you not heard of the sprites, before?"    On the matter of the book, she nodded.

"Aye; these things should be found, and put to the cause of good.  Those that can be. And any baneful things, put away where those who would make use of them cannot. And I agree with you, Oote - you don't mind if I still call you that, do you? - I think there are other criteria to consider than distance alone."

"Oh I don't think making a dragon angry is a good thing. Oote is right we can go after something else. that is unless Togo and the rest of you are very confident we can defeat Netcong once and for all. That is something I think that would take a lot of powerful and likely famous adventurers. I do really like the idea of recovering magical things that will help good people. Especially if it puts a end to the Hun Emperor's rampage and saves many lives. Perhaps Morgan and Oote could work together while looking through this Vitrix's Codex of Artifacts of power. Even Togo could read it if that would help. I wouldn't mind looking myself as I am curious though I don't know very much about magical things aside from what the bards sing about. That and stories that people tell some of which I might remember."

Mia smiles warmly at Morgan and Mystal as she talks about water sprites and Mystal Shimmies up to oote. She uses one finger to slide a platter of Berries close to Mystal and Oote. "Did someone say a platter of berries? Here you go enjoy just don't eat to much." She giggles for a moment knowing only a pixie could easily overindulge when it comes to berries. Not that others couldn't if they found a abundant supply of them all at once!

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

"I am fine with Oote," Oote nodded.  "It is easier, after all.  More efficient."

Mintflip does not say as much, but there is some relief on his little Pixie face.  The question of reintegrating a much-too-serious Whootlebee back into the fun-loving  tribe of the Purple Heron Marsh is now resolved, at least for now.

In fact, the Pixies eagerly congratulation Oote on his new mission in life, wishing him "many fine adventures!"

Flitter has a suddenly and slightly bothered look when she sees Mystal’s arm over Oote’s shoulder.   And Oote seems to like it.

“Just thinking of the things I could learn…” Oote says excitedly.  “With such delightful company!”

Flitter manages a small Pixie blush.  She mumbles something about some more berry juice.

The Fauns, happy as they are to have their lost one back, have none of the complications and issues of the Pixies.

But they inquire, where is the group going from here?  How can they help?

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

"Hmm well If you think we can do it Togo I certainly am willing to give it a try. Though we would need someone exceptionally good at sneaking in and out of places. If the dragon is sleeping our out getting dinner would probably be the best time to give it a try."

She couldn't help but smile seeing That everyone seems to be happy. Mintflips relief she wonders about though it's for the best since Oote probably wouldn't have been happy living in the forest anymore.

Seeing flitters expression Mia wonders if perhaps there was a need for her to act as a priestess of the goddess of love. Honestly she had thought pixies might come out of budding flowers beings of pure magic, happiness and totally care free. Though it was clear they had the potential for love too which warms her heart. Pixies she is sure did things differently which meant she had some learning to do before she could offer any sort of help. She thought a private conversation with flitter might prove helpful. Perhaps not if things worked out on their own. Mystal was talking with flitter. About what she didn't know though it likely had something to do with Oote considering how quickly she had removed her arm.

"Yes Oote I imagine you will learn a good many things. Some you might not even expect to learn. Life can be like that and it's part of what makes it interesting."

Hearing the faun's offer of help and question she answers as best she can. Mia looks briefly like she's thinking about it. "Honestly I am not entirely sure. However it sounds like we might be paying Netcong's lair a visit. Unless of course we decide to do something else. Perhaps you can tell us about the surrounding lands so that we might pass safely. If you know about anything dangerous we should avoid. Maybe tell us of anything interesting that is in the area. If you have extra food that you can spare it's possible Morgan and Togo could be running low. Though I am not sure. The food here certainly looks tasty! Also while we are close to your home a experienced guide might be helpful. However I wouldn't want any of you to go to far we want you to be safe. Pixies can fly so Oote probably wouldn't remember the safe on the ground ways to go."

After a little bit she leans close her human sized face fairly close to flitter and Mystal. Mia's expression is gentle with genuine interest in her friends. Mia's blue eyes have just a touch of concern in them though for the most part she's pretty sure it's to soon to worry. Whispering to flitter and Mystal by default since the two are so close together. "Flitter maybe we can have a little talk privately a bit later."

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

The wizardess too cast a faintly concerned look, regarding Oote's apparent new...predilection.

His increased seriousness might have lent him an entirely new perspective on love, courtship, and romance.  Perhaps one quite alien by pixie standards.   She didn't imagine him trying anything overtly bad. But, still, if it was so, it might be a source of confusion or upset for those concerned.

Nonetheless, if any was right to address it, it was sweet Mia, cleric of Aphrodite.

Given the right opening, Morgan will inform the others:

"The book has changed.  It reorders itself periodically, I have seen. The first item listed is now the Portal to the Realm of Positive Energy.  And the book says of it, 'In possession of Glio Halstus, known as the Healer.' After it, is the staff with Netcong, the Dragon. And then, third, another staff.  I perused this one earlier whilst looking- the Deluge Staff.  Supposedly crafted by Unseelie to command the power of elemental water- including such things as Ocean Nymphs.  The book lists its location as a Sea Cave west of Coriallum -- 'there where the Unseelie lord Rimatyali hid and escaped his Seelie pursuers but did not escape his death.'" She briefly paused, glancing to the others.

"And, fourth, and quite close to the third, is the item that was previously 'hammer of lightning' now also near Coriallum... but at sea!... in the possession of Garulf the Adogit, who comes to pillage."

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

Listening to Morgan she was rather amazed looking at the magical book with a sense of wonder. "That has to be one of the most amazing books in all the world. It actually changes depending on what famous magical item is in the closest proximity to you. Making it function as much like a map or compass as a book of knowledge. It even goes further to tell you who or what might currently be in possession of it."

She glances at Togo wondering what he might be thinking. "So Netcong is closest. Though that staff in particular will likely be by far the most dangerous to recover. Do you know what that staff will do? Second is the staff Of deluge which sounds dangerous. Controlling water could be very useful. Controlling Ocean nymphs though has me rather worried and wondering if that staff might need to be broken. We can't afford to let the orcs get their hands on that one. The question is why did the Unseelie lord Rimatyali die?"

"There might be something pretty nasty in that sea cave. Garulf sounds like pirate or some sort of monster intent on pillaging and doing bad things. I think the staff that has the power of elemental water should be retrieved before the hammer of lightning as it could prove very useful at sea depending on what it can do aside from controlling ocean nymphs."

"Netcong's staff is the closest which makes it a potential first stop. The question is Morgan, Mystal, everyone are we willing to give it a go without recruiting any additional help. Togo seems to feel we might be able to make off with that staff without confronting Netcong him or herself."

She of course hasn't forgotten about flitter. For now Mia will patiently wait to see what flitter might wish to do regarding a possible private conversation.

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

Flitter gives Mystal a curious look.  “I am sure Oote means he is happy he is traveling with other Pixies.”

A few of the other Pixies in the area giggle.

Then one of the other Purple Heron Marsh Pixies, a female wearing a bouncy headdress of purple flowers,  approaches Mystal.  “You are not a Pixie, that is certain, your ways must be different.  So I will tell you of ours.  Pixies are playful and flirtatious, and with female Pixies it is usually teasing and silly, but with male Pixies it is always teasing and silly, because their world is firstly games and play. And secondly and thirdly.  And fourthly and fifthly.  So Pixies might expect you to flirt, because that is what female Pixies do, but not Oote, because he is male and therefore without Clue.” *

The Fauns have weightier things to consider.  In between their long dinner of forest specialties there are talks of the quests of the adventurers, and what they might find along the way, and when Morgan brings it up… Fey history.

Morgan, with a few of the Fey around for advice (Mostly Faun advice, although Mintflip can surprise now and then with a useful bit of trivia) put things together as follows:  Quite a long time ago (How long?  Who knows.  The Fey don’t track that way.  A long time) this forest – which was much bigger then and extended all the way east to the area of what is now Lutetia Parisiorum- was caught up in the great struggle between the Seelie and Unseelie Fey Courts.**  The Unseelie had a very simple, obvious idea:  being beautiful and wise and powerful, they should be ruling the world, not allowing the “lesser folk” to run willy nilly and spoil it all.  They even invited the Seelie (whom they saw as equals, or at least, near equals) to join them.  The Seelie would rule by day, and the Unseelie by night.

But Unseelie rule would mean pain and loss of freedom from almost everyone.  The Unseelie, though certainly beautiful and powerful, had no regard for anyone’s feelings but their own.  They would tease, trick, and even kill for amusement, without any feelings of guilt.  The Seelie could not let them rule the world.  In the end, the Seelie banished the Unseelie… but not without banishing themselves.  They thought it was for the best, though, since in addition to Pixies, Nixies, Sprites and all manner of Good Fey, they left behind their children:  The Elves.  This is how the Fey tell the tale.

Among the Unseelie, everyone is a Noble.  This is how they view themselves.  As Mintflip reports, the Unseelie say they are Number One, and all others Number Two, or lower.  Each and every Unseelie thinks himself or herself a wonderful, enlightened, special being made to rule.

Of course, this was a war before Humans made the art and science of war.  No great armies in the field, ranks of archers, mighty fortresses.  All Fey folk, even the Seelie and Unseelie, are passionate and individualistic and forming great hierarchies does not come naturally to them.  It was a war of individuals and small groups, and a war of personal actions and reactions, ambushes, heroics, and betrayals, played out over the vastness of the forest, for many years.

In the end, which for Mortals was the beginning, the Unseelie were banished, and the Seelie also left the world for a different world.

There were loose ends.  Rimatyali was apparently one of them.  An Unseelie Lord (but then, they all are). Feared, and rightly so because he enslaved many Ocean Fey, but Vanished, and never seen again.  The name has come up, generally with Unseelie accusing the Earth-bound Fey of still holding prisoners, but he has not been seen in the time of Mortals.

*Romance among Pixies is a very tricky thing, especially for female Pixies.  This is because while female Pixies sometimes develop the inclination, male Pixies almost never do.  Some knowledgeable Fey have said this is because the Pixie mind stays in a state that  a Human might call childish.  They have trouble with mature thoughts, and as Human males tend to reach those thoughts later in life than females, Pixie males tend to have trouble getting there at all. It’s not unusual for a frustrated Pixie female to drop increasingly unsubtle hints on her favored male for months, even years, until the clueless male finally realizes… oh my…she wants… YUK!  (whereupon he flies away).  The situation is made more complicated by the fact that female Pixies are the greater fraction of their population.

It is a most fortunate thing for the Pixie race that all this has absolutely nothing to do with where baby Pixies come from.  That is magic, and that is another story entirely.

**Partly as a result of the Seelie/Unseelie war, the Fey lost control of most of this forest world, retreating west to Armorica (where the party is now) while leaving pockets behind.  One of these pockets is the Yvelines Forest, home of Mestenon, where Rita, Culann, and Bryon currently are.

Ben, I'm sorry, but do we know what this staff in Netcong's possession actually does?   I don't see that in reading back a bit.

Morgan will be inclined seek the Deluge staff, unless this one in the dragon's possession is like a gots-to-have-it! sort of artifact.

Netcong.  Outlandish sounding.  Looks like it could be the name of an ISP.  ^_~   What is the origin of it?

Mia smiles at Morgan then listens to the purple heron Marsh pixie explain the way of pixies. Her expression is respectful as she pays careful attention. Then couldn't help but giggle for a moment at the thought of clueless pixie men. "Oh that's unfortunate. It must be frustrating for you sometimes. Although Oote is different he just might understand one day. Thank you very much for this gift of insight."

Turning her attention to the advice being given by various fey she listens her eyes widening slightly. "I had no idea that the Unseelie and the Seelie had both left our world. Well mostly since we did run across a Unseelie lord in a illusionary manner a while back." She looks away for a moment with a troubled expression. "He mad me very mad I am sad to say. That one is spending eternity trapped in the earth for what he did."

After a bit she shakes off the painful memory giving a quick smile to reassure anyone that might be worried. "He must have been defeated by a river goddess, some powerful good fey or if we are unlucky something as evil as himself. Though I think the staff isn't owned by anyone as it didn't list a current owner."

Re: The Deep Forest Fey

Though the Pixies are entertaining, and getting most of the attention (Pixies are just so darn cute) it is the Fauns doing most of the effort of hosting the adventurers.  After all, a few sliced berries do not feed a party of adventurers, especially when one is a Halfling.  (Unless, by ‘a few berries’, we really mean ‘a few watermelons’, which, by their botanical definition, are berries.  Yes.  It’s true.)

The Fauns have a big tent set up- it seems to a conglomeration of little tents- and the whole tribe, a group of about 30, has shown up, brining whatever food they could find.

Fish, eggs, a salad of wild greens and other foods provide the bulk that the delectable but tiny offerings of the Pixies do not.  The Fauns approach feasting seriously.  Life is to be lived, and when there is a feast, feast big.  There are stories and songs and games.

Fey generally do not travel much, but the Fauns can tell more about the way ahead than the Pixies can.  They recommend that if the party is going in the direction of the Deluge Staff as given in the book, then they are best off going north to the coast, and then finding a “The Road of Man”, which connects up the scattered Breton communities on the rocky and rugged north shore.  On that coast, it is also possible the party might find Selkies.  If so, they may react well to the party, if Ongriss has spread stories of her journeys.

The Fauns can give advice about what the party might see along the way there- it should take them four days to reach the north shore.  If they do, they will have crossed the Fey forest south north through the heart of Fey country and not on one of the roads, a rare feat.

The biggest of the creatures here are the Treants, of course, but they are quite rare.  They won’t be found unless they want to be found, because in the Fey Forest you can walk into a Treant without noticing it.  But there is a good chance they would recognize that Mia and Togo are now, on some level, Fey.  The Treants who are most often in that area are Soursap, Willowbriar, and Wiselm.

The biggest threat is from colonies of extremely large spiders.  From a Pixie point of view, these are titanic, terrifying monsters, and a Pixie not paying attention can get caught in a web, which are very hard to see at night, or when you are in too much of hurry.  Most of the spiders will not bother with anything not stuck in a web.

Another danger is the Doppel-Ooze. This is a formless glob of goo that lives in a scummy pond.  It has a way of sensing the thoughts and memories of those in the area, and will use them to create a form that looks like something or someone of interest, but is really an extension of itself.  It uses this to bait others in.   Sometimes it eats prey, but sometimes, it just seems to feed off mental energy, and will let someone go after a while- tired, and very confused, with only vague memories of what happened.

There are other Fey folk around, including a group of Korrigans, more Pixies, and the smaller relatives of Pixies- Gorse and Petals.  A few Unicorns.  No Dryads here, it’s too far from Human settlements, which they need.

At the coast there is a small Human settlement which is the homestead of a Druid named Bruccios.  He helps travelers pass without coming into conflict with the Fey.

From here, the party goes to a new thread for their journey:  The Deluge Staff
