Regrouping back at Cabreus House

Bryon may at times lack sense, but...

No, there are no buts.  It's clear, and as straightforward as that.  There is a "however", though.

However, she is able to realize that fact.  The world has always been full of people able to piece things together and "see the big picture" when all she can see are a jumble of colors.  She knows this.  And, fortunately, in this case, she knows where to find some of them.

The Princess.  SHE is one of those people.

Bryon realizes that that kind of brain would be useful here.  It's a school, after all.  Who else?

So the entire group- priestess included, but not elderly priestess- regroups at the Cabreus House, where word is sent to Gondioque, and by way of her to Titus, that something needs investigation regarding the old, sealed off School of Minerva.

Diantha admits, perhaps in their eagerness they were proceeding hastily.  After all, this kind of opportunity does not arise often.   Best to be analytical about it.  Prepare fully, rather than run off with the first group of brave souls that appeared.  Minerva would approve.

The proprietors of Cabreus House, on the other hand, begin to suspect that something slightly irregular is going to be discussed.  They remind their guests:  the Visigoths are very, very intolerant about certain things, and one of those things is going places they clearly have forbidden.

They ask if they can please keep things... subtle.  "Let's not do anything that would bring Visigoth retribution down upon poor Cabreus House, please".

Regrouping back at Cabreus House

Bryon was willing to go along with them, especially since Scrumff approved. He made a somewhat rare appearance these days, he was getting older. He slept more and ate less, and there was grey starting to show in his fur.

He spoke to her in his chittering way, "Mistress, I should be about finding a she-ferret. I am older now and you will require a younger servant. I will return with a 15th, but it may be some time. I will train him as I was trained. Fret not, you can handle this. You have marvelous friends."

Bryon nodded, brushing aside a tear. "I will await your return." He scampered off, out, and towards the wild places. He vanished. Bryon felt very sad.

But then the Princess was with them. She felt better immediately. She curtsied as was polite, then hugged her friend. "Scrumff has gone to make another little one because he feels old. I am alone now I think. I wish I had someone to cry with me. But, there is no time. We have an adventure! Come and help won't you? You are so very smart."

Gondioque blinks. A wise pet. Pray that he succeeds. The Ambassador's tone become level, serious. Bryon, even among comrades, stay silent about having a pet that can communicate with you. Your life may depend on keeping that secret.

Now, what's this about an adventure? One at a time, please.

Diantha eventually realizes that the others are not really up to the task of filling in Titus and Gondioque on what's going on.  She's beginning to wonder if she has the right group.

Still, years have passed while she's waited for an opportunity.  If this is what the gods have sent her... perhaps Minerva means it as a test of her faith and wits.

She reiterates what she told the others already:

“I am Diantha of the Temple of Minerva, goddess of Wisdom, patron of teachers and scholars.  We were one of the first temples in Massilia,” Diantha says.  “A thousand years.  No one knows the exact date, but a thousand years is close enough.  There have been fifty seven High Priestesses since.  The school was built on the early crypt, and I think the spirits of the some of them may be helping to protect it from the Goths.  The current high priestess… well, in a way it is me.  It’s really Majamri, but she had retired and passed the title to Zerrin, but the Orcs killed Zerrin so Majamri was reinstated.  But she’s very, very old now and stays home.  She is the high priestess in title, because I am not ready.  Soon, I hope, not yet.”

"We still have use of our temple, though it's not much of a temple.  Minerva does not see fit to invest in vanities.  Of far greater value to us was the school.  So important was it that through the years, our high priestesses invested it with the best of their defensive blessings, and invoked powers to protect it.  Not even the Goths with the help of their infernal masters could bring it down, though they still try, and every year they grow stronger.  Instead, they have sealed it up, and placed their own cursed guardians to patrol it.  I believe important secrets are guarded within.  I cannot say what, because the high priestesses always guarded the secret and did not pass it to me.  But I know, important.  I was hoping that these few would help me solve the puzzle of entry, and then explore it.  We went to see the last High Priestess, but the years have weighed upon her, and her mind is no longer sharp.  I cannot seem to communicate with her... and so Bryon suggested you."

Gondioque's listens intently, but then her eyes seem to try to look through the northern wall. Then she speaks unexpected words:

"Minerva, this mortal asks that you wake up. Your wisdom and protection are needed, and I doubt You want Your Name only to be a memory. I come from the north, but You may well be One Whom these people need so the bonds among good people and noble deities once more grows strong.

"I call out to Oestgre, Whom I love, to attend this chance for a new beginning. Among All Who wish well for the people, I plead for aid. In particular, Freya for the struggle, Frigg, for the goal of peace and plenty, Father Odin for wisdom, and Brunnhilde, Who knows much of our struggle for life for ourselves and our children."

She turns to Diantha. "What can you tell us of these guardians? Are there any Visigoths or others patrolling the area? As for Majamri, could magic have clouded her mind? Please tell me more of how you tried to communicate with her."

Regrouping back at Cabreus House

When they arrived Titus thought he recognized Diantha from his earlier years in Massalia, but it has been a long time. Before he was sent north by the Mercators he had worshiped at the temple and even met Majamri and thought he recognized Diantha from those days. Indeed, on his left forefinger he wears a ruby set gold ring inscribed with Minerva's Owls. Still, it has been a long time and given what he knows the priests of Arras and throughout Northern Europa experienced before the Emperor was brought down he can certainly understand how the reign of the Goths might have such horrible impact.

When Gondiogue finishes he speaks, "It may well be that the demons supporting the Goths have enabled the clouding of the mind of the Summus Sacerdos Minervae, but this is just as likely to be old age. I recall Majamri well from my younger days and perhaps it was my youthful eyes, but she was as wizened before I went North as she was wise. If she has retired and Zerrin had risen in her stead then that was for that reason."

He pauses, "Of course, I may well be wrong in this... If I am not, then perhaps the Ambassador's first question is more to the point. Aside from the challenge that the holy protections placed upon the school, what sort of 'accursed guardians' should we expect to confront, because I am quite happy to assist and accompany this quest in any way I may."

Diantha looks suprised at the names Gondioque calls on.  They are gods of a faraway people about which she knows little.  But on the subject of guardians...

"Not mere Orcs patrolling around.  None of those, in fact.  Such a visible would signal that the school is a haven for powers the Infernals have not defeated.  People would see the Orcs on guard duty and rumors would fly about what it is they are guarding.  No, the powers that we are up against are supernatural.  Demonic forces, shadowy and sly.  Those who tempt fate and try to enter the school... well, as far as I know it has been unsuccessful.  That is why I have been waiting.  Massilia has no one with the skill, and the will to defeat agents of the Infernals.  Vile magic... I wish it was just Orcs."

Titus takes another look around the room and while he does not know everyone he has at least met or has heard of several of them in passing. Indeed, realizing that his old comrade Bulwyf is present makes him feel further emboldened.

"It seems then we have a rather interesting excursion ahead of us! I am prepared to set forth immediately. Does anyone need supplies or any sort I am happy to make whatever arrangements I may."

Gondioque starts to consider and plan. This may be a way forward, but I have to be careful. I don't want to start a war between the Visigoths and Burgundy. Fortunate, in a way, that there are no Orcs around. But the Infernals.... They well may seek to trick us or have us betray ourselves or each other. As for me, self-pride may be a danger...a danger that can be minimized by paying attention to others' words. I'm guessing that we need some means of having light. So...I might as well tell you: I have inherent magical powers including the ability to make an object shine like a torch. Further, if magic e set before us, I can dispel it. Please, none of you betray me in this.

Titus takes in the Princess's words, "I appreciate your careful concern here, Ambassador. Your magical abilities will be quite helpful to us. In my past confrontations with demons things were not as subtle as you fear they might be, if that eases your mind.

"That is, the greater demons may, indeed, be subtle, but aside from whatever traps and/or seals they have set for us the creatures they have left to guard the school are more likely to be there to rip whomever gets near the place to pieces. And it is also unlikely that there will be enough intelligence amongst them to relay any useful analysis of our party to their masters.

"Regardless, those of us present here must know that our group and individual actions and decisions are sealed between us."

Diantha, is there a way you can be disguised so you're not noticed? I'm guessing that seeing you near the temple will rouse suspicion.

OOC: Do we know where the school is actually located. From my first reading I presumed that it was located in the area, but not within the temple. Indeed, for some reason I thought it must be well outside the city; however, going back and rereading previous posts I don't know why I thought that!

Since Titus is from the city am I wrong to think he would know of it or has it been hidden by the Goths for so long that this is all news to him?

The School is located near the temple.  Same ridge, and in fact in the same compound, surrounded by the same hedge, a mere stone's throw from the temple.

But that stone's throw is a severe one.

"Merely breaking in like thieves is going to get us killed," Diantha says.  "I cannot merely walk us up to the door and start knocking it down.  The first part of the puzzle is getting in safely.  And that is why I had brought the others to Majamri."

"I have been thinking about this for some time, hoping that a day like this would come.  The priestesses then... they must have planned for this.  We always plan.  Minerva would be ashamed of us if we didn't.  They must have planned for another way in, if we ever had to enter or leave the school in secrecy.  And I believe Majamri would know.  If she still remembers. She is old and feeble now but she must remember, somehow.  She always hinted that there was something, but she always.. you know... old clerics always say things like 'When the time is right'.  The time was never right.  Whatever secrets she has, she never passed to me."

"If I ever have the chance to renew the sect of Minerva I will set a new rule:  we shall not speak in oracular cliches.  If we have something to say we will say it straightly."

Returning to Majamri's home

Gondioque and those going with her, along with Diantha, make a return to the home of the high priestess.

Majamri lives simply, with her family- not her children, but nephew, wife and their children.  Majamri never had children of her own. Orcs are always skeptical over the effort humans put out for the care of the elderly.  They see people who have become frail in body and mind as useless.  For humans, caring for the elderly has become something of a luxury.  Many people simply cannot afford to do it.  Majamri's status makes her one of the fortunate ones.

She's having a drink in the family's little garden, a tiny space surrounded by tiers of plants, mostly vegetables and herbs, making green screens around the garden.

Majamri smiles at Diantha.  "Welcome back.  Last time you had your students, yes?  Are they learning well?  Do they know their numbers and letters?"

She looks at the characters.  "Sit.  Do you want something to drink?"

Bryon takes on a very respectful tone, one she may not have used before with her new friends. ”Marthair-Mhor” (Literally Great Mother, a formal Celtic word for Grandmother) She sits as close to the old woman as she can, taking a great comfort and joy being in her presence. Celtic people don’t live that long, and those who do are held in very high regard. Bryon is rarely so attentive, and yet she seems very childlike, as if waiting for some wonderful story. ”Yes, I’d like something to drink, please Marthair-Mhor.” She got as close as possible, leaning in and giving her rapt attention. She nodded, smiling, happy to have a possible wonderful wise story. ”Will you tell us a story, Mathair-Mhor? Please?” She grinned and nodded yes, hoping to coax some wonderful story from her.

Returning to Majamri's home

The old woman perks up at the request for a story.  Diantha has someone else arrange drinks.

"A story," Majamri repeats.  "We're not story tellers, child, we are scholars.  We tell histories.  Some confuse them with stories, but there is a difference.  Histories happened.  Stories only maybe happened."

The old priestess has Bryon perform the "audience participation" part of the story that is designed to illustrate her point- hold a single small scarf at arm's length.  And keep holding it.

"I will tell of our fall," she says.  "It is the most important thing."

"In old days, people revered the gods, and the gods made us great.  They demanded so little of us, but people are people, and even a light burden becomes unbearable over time... the silk scarf, child?"

And indeed, the longer Bryon holds it at arm's length, the heavier it seems to be.

"So it came to pass, in days long ago, before I was high priestess, that Minerva revealed to us what was coming.  And the priestesses, and the priests of all the temples were afraid, and they organized to resist.  But Minerva told us, all efforts would be in vain, because the people had grown weary of the burden, and were not ready to take it up again.  We would not be able to defend the city, it would only bring about our death.  But we could make ready for better days, because all things have a time.  We had to hide some things."

"You're probably hoping I would tell you where something is hidden.  I cannot.  It is a secret I had to protect, even if it meant not knowing.  I am a forgetful old woman, and I know nothing, and the Orcs know that I know nothing, and that is good."

"You know, we have always had allies, Diantha.  Always.  Some things were safest left with them, not with us.  They do not like us, you know.  The Orcs.  They hate us, always watched us, but what you do not yourself know, no torture could ever force from you.  In this way, I saved at least a few of my clerics, didn't I?"

"But someone has to know," Diantha says.

"Well yes.  And no.  I know there are things to know, and even I do not know what they are and where they are anymore.  I could not trust myself to keep my lips shut through torture, either.  And the ones who I entrusted it to, I cannot even say now.  But... remember our owls.  Owls are there on the way.  The gate is on the hill of temples, but now, who would I pick to give such a secret to?  Who would the Orcs not suspect?"

Majamri’s words became a drone in rh ears after “History.” She was waiting to be told she could put her arm down. It began to quiver as her muscles began to burn but she held firm not wanting to disappoint the Grand-Mother. As she finished Bryon was sweating, gritting her teeth, and her eyes watered at the strain but she held on even as her legs began to shake. How long did she need the scarf held out, Bryon wondered. She was forced to bolster the scarf arm with her other, and now her back too began to burn as her whole body was beginning to loose the fight with gravity.

"Minerva's portfolio is the mind," Majamri replies.  "Miss... you can put the scarf down.  The point is made.  The small burden becomes so heavy, over time."

Majamri sighs.  "And I suppose... we made the burden heavier than most.  Study, practice, learn, repeat.  Discipline, always discipline.  All for a goddess who... to be honest, I can see how many people would underestimate the benefits Minerva brought to them.  Everyone drinks wine, everyone thanks Bacchus.  Everyone has a good time with Bacchus, and the only thing Bacchus ever asks is some gratitude for the wine.  We're... harder... aren't we?"

"Yes, High Priestess," Diantha agrees, not really knowing what to say about that.  In the presence of a high priestess, only the high priestess gets to be critical of the whole religion.

"Some gods don't give you burdens," Majamri says.  "But then.. maybe that is why... oh, I don't know, but some would say that such beings don't command the respect.  Or, from the Orcs, the fear.  And what Orcs do not fear, they pay little attention to.  Do you understand me?"

Titus holds his tongue noting that his comment was ignored as were everyone else's regardless. The two priests were talking and if there is anything he has learned it is not to intrude on a theological conversation between them!

Still, he tried to recall what he can of the area around the academy. To his mind the one thing he knows Orcs do not fear is battle. While some humans may have an affection for fighting those are actually the minority, but Orcs seem to actually need it.

He also gives some thoughts to what he knows about Orcs. While he has spent most of the past several years fighting Hunnish Orcs he grew up dealing with Goths. Having spent his entire life dealing with them he must have some sense of their character beyond the battlefield and as such attempts to come up with characteristics beyond their warlike nature that might lend themselves to a trap like this.

Diantha stares at Bryon, the person she had least expected to steer them correctly.

"The Temple of Venus," she says quietly.  "And the temple of Bacchus.  They share one small terrace on the east end of Temple Ridge.  Fitting, some say.  But... with both of them, the Orcs don't seem to pay much attention to them.  But nor have they offered even the slightest hint that they might oppose the Orcs.  They are quite content to be quiet and keep to themselves.  Unlikely allies if that is what is being suggested."

As the the High Priestess speaks a thought occurs to Titus. Anyone who has been around him for any period of time comes to expect him to speak his mind assertively. Indeed, sometimes aggressively, but always with a certain verbal grace. However, for the first time in a long time he begins awkwardly, "Forgive me, but... I... If what I say here seem prurient or disrespectful, please pardon me and understand as I do not mean to be impertinent...

"But from what I recall of the area around the Temples, which is now called the Pandemonicum there have been new statues put up including the latest, which may not yet be complete... “Rape of Minerva”."

Seems stupid of them. Minerva will be most displeased; in fact, many will. Apart from that, it draws attention to Minerva. If the Goths were wiser, they'd let memories of Minerva fade and not draw attention to her.

Titus had hoped his recollection of the Temple ridge and environs would result in a useful clue... Maybe the statue actually

Titus tries to take everything that has been said into consideration and Byron's question brings the importance of this into focus, "Quite so, Byron. Perhaps it would help to bring together what seem to me to be the highlights of what we have learned so far:

1. The Temple of Minerva's secrets are hidden

2. The High Priestess was afraid that even she would reveal those secrets if tortured, so made a point of not learning them, yet reminded us of Athena's owls and notes that the "Owls are on their way"

3. Upon the Temple Ridge the Goths have destroyed or repurposed various temples and created the Pandemonicum from the former Temple of Jupiter within which they have destroyed the holy statues once there and are replacing them with perversions such as 'The Rape of Minerva'... While it may be that this is simply a matter of timing, we can not dismiss the symbolical significance of that particular 'work' at this particular time.

"Assuming that your earlier mention of 'the Owls' was not metaphorical, High Priestess, perhaps the clue to summoning the Owls, which  seems to be our purpose? Perhaps it is that the key to opening the lock is related to that horrific statue and will release the Owls or permitting the Owls to arrive will deliver that which we are seeking?"

He pauses uncertainly, but continues, "Whatever the case, it seems likely that if we speak to the High Priests of Venus and Bacchus we might learn something useful... Though, now that I am thinking about it Venus seems the likeliest given the nature of how the Orcs would perceive her contrary to Minerva combined with the fact of the latest statue I mentioned.... Assuming that its creation and our mission is just an accident and it has no actual relation to anything we are investigating."

“There are no accidents,” Diantha says.  “Not when Minerva is involved.  Just strategies, which we hope to be successful.  I don’t believe any of the timing is coincidence, and this is the time in which we must act.”

“It’s always the time in which we must act,” the old High Priestess says.  “It’s just the action that changes.  It’s never time to do nothing.”

“But… they know me, at the other temples,” Diantha realizes.  “We are the ones the Goths are suspicious of.  It would be best if I did not go.  I do not want that suspicion to spread to Bacchus and Venus.  The Orcs do not care about them at all… so far.”

She turns to the characters.  “I ask you to take the lead here, and do this part of our quest without me.  You are much less likely to arouse suspicion than I am.  They watch us.  That is why I have been… careful… about revealing myself.”

Titus is also curious about the owls that he has now brought up twice, but have been ignored by the clerics. Perhaps this is because she was speaking metaphorically or in some sort of code? I may be causing a  bit of a lacunae here.

Having taken a sip from his cup he clears his voice, "Yes, perhaps I made too much of the, erm, owls. Regardless of their meaning it seems the first step of our mission is clear.

"That is, we visit the temples of Venus and Bacchus and see if the priests there might be helpful.

"Are there any specific priests at each temple to whom we should address our questions?"

Druk thinks about owls, those odd birds that come out at night and pounce on rodents.  Not many Humans in Masillia see them because owls are nocturnal and Humans don't see that well in the dark.

Neither Majamri nor Diantha know which specific clerics, at either the temples of Bacchus or Venus, would be the ones to talk to.

"We don't know all that much about them," Diantha admits.  "I mean, we know them, we know names and we've met casually and at festivals... but we don't generally socialize."

"There should have been more socializing," Majamri says quietly.  "Something overlooked."

Diantha continues:  "One might say we have cross purposes.  Minerva is Knowledge and Wisdom, after all.  Venus and Bacchus are associated with a profound lack thereof.  Either causing it, or enjoying it.  But there has always been mutual professional courtesy.  The spiritual agendas might be opposite, on the one hand, but certainly mutual prosperity, even survival, has always bound us together.  So certainly, if we entrusted secrets to them, they would be loyal and do what was necessary.  That's assuming..."

She glances at Majamri before continuing.  "Assuming they remember.  You might have covered the tracks rather well."

"But not too well," the old High Priestess says.  "The trail may be concealed but not erased."

"But who would they go to?"

Majamri shuts her eyes, and it looks for a few moments like she is deep in concentration.

"Always the enemy, always the Goths, must take them into account," she says.  "Even though these temples are not thought to be threats by them, the Goths would watch. They'd watch the leaders.  If I were me... and I was... I would have arranged it not with a leader, but with someone young and reliable and smart.  Of course, that was some years ago, that person may be higher up the ladder now.  Maybe even leader now.  So that doesn't help, does it?"

"Well, I hope we find the answer there," Diantha says.  "But again, it is best that I do not go myself.  I am someone the Orcs are already suspicious of."

Bryon looked at Titus, ”Mr. Titus should throw a big party. Venus and Bacchius are always invited to parties. Have their fancy holy people come to the party and then we can get them to talk to us. Invite the Orcs too, they won’t come. They don’t like human parties, but being polite you invite them so that they won’t come see?  Then when Venus and Bacchius show up...or their holy people anyway...to bless the party the Goths won’t even be suspicious.” She clapped her hands, ”Oh yes a party. We shall have wine and beer, and and all sorts of fancy rich people and then music and dancing...” She began humming to herself, dancing with an imaginary partner. She spun and glided around the room, she has been taught how to dance, that much is clear, for it is easy to imagine someone holding her and leading her. After a few moments she opened her eyes and looked around, ”I’m sorry what were we discussing?”

Druk:

Titus was still uncertain the relevance of the owls and given that neither cleric had actually responded to his initial questions about them he was... Uncertain.

He was also uncertain about Druk, who he does not recall meeting, but at least Bryon knew him and he had been permitted entry, so... That made him less-uncertain about the half-orc, at least.

When Bryon suggests he throw a party he nods, "Well... Yes, I certainly could. It could be a sort of Home Coming affair.

"I could invite all of our peers and given that in my time away I 'have' become such the hedonist, I would, of course, invite the entirety of the priests of hedonism! Drink, love, and, of course, gambling. (Mercury should be invited regardless, you see.)"

Turning back to Majamri and Diantha, "Having such a debauch would distance all of us present, who be invited, of course, from yourselves. In fact, depending upon whether you think this wise, if we play up the hedonism angle you might even say publicly discouraging things about me and 'my friends', who have been 'clearly turned to sinful ways by our exposure to the Hunnish North', or something like that."

He nods to the great woman, daughter of kings and when she lets go he remains in the area but all he can think of is the time he freed some slaves when he had to pretend to be his dead master, others he doomed to keep the charade.

These people would have freed all of them he knows it.

If he must hurt someone, or stand and be seen to help this ... party these people who are good. He thinks he would do it. But if he can help as an Ook and stay hidden, that is easier.

As he thinks about being himself, staying out of the light he feels better and he backs away to the safer edge of the people so they can talk and make their good plans. He will show Bryon the owls, yes a simple thing an Ook who knows how to find things can do.

Titus smiles appreciating the exchange and feeling a twinge of excitement that he had not felt for a while, but a thought crosses his mind that focuses him, "Please understand that what I intend to create will be a proper Bacchanalia. It will be a fantastic event for some, but quite beyond what might be appropriate for others."

Turning to Gondioque he continues, "Forgive me, but it seems to me that you do not understand what our clerics of Athena mean to say.... And if you do not understand this you are going to have a good deal of trouble here. Everyone knows that a few cups of wine might enable one to convey things previously uncomfortable. But that is not what we are talking about here.

"A 'Bacchanalia' is more than something more.... In it everyone releases themselves and this might lead to dread as well as deep reflection. Among most Romans this is not a party that is related to wisdom and understanding. Rather it is emotion and from such comes things that are utterly unrelated to Lady Athena as they have little to do with intelligence and rationality, which is why our host and Diantha would not willingly attend."

Titus takes a breath, he was not used to being angry and found himself so unexpectedly. Somehow the Burgundian's words crossed a line in his mind. He puts his hand out and caresses the neck of the golden sight-hound at his side, "So, I agree that you should not be present, Lady Diantha. And if you wish all further planning outside of this house to avoid contamination.

"Everyone else might know that one week from this day they are invited to an affair at House Mercator. You shall receive invitations, but do not fear -- if you are among us today you shall be welcome then."

He pauses, "Otherwise, please do inform me if there are those not present that ought to be invited and let us plan to meet in three days to confirm plans, but please do be careful with your visits to House Mercator properties, because I fear as of now we are all moving against the Powers That Be and must be quite aware of our actions and how they might affect everyone else."

Owls and Bacchanaelia.

Byron and Druk go owl watching that evening while Titus begins arranging a 'Bacchanalia'.

Generally, when one goes to look for owls, one does not go to see owls in a group, as one might when going to see ducks or pigeons.  One goes to a place Owls frequent and hopes to see an owl.   The Owls seem to have favorite nesting spots- these Druk was aware of, in part.  They also have favorite hunting spots, and by following a couple of owls they learn of one- the north side of Temple Ridge.  This area includes the “Olive Slope”, a steep slope on the north side of Temple Ridge with olive groves belonging to a few different owners.  Owls have plenty of trees to perch in here, olives attract rodents, and owls pounce in the darkness.  (Olives can help prevent heart disease in rats.  So the pests here are healthy.  Until an owl grabs them.  Then they are unhealthy).

Towards the top is an unkempt, gnarly cluster of old olive trees, a few dead, surrounded in brush- apparently an abandoned part of the field.  When they finally get here, Bryon is able to make contact with an owl.  Scrumff will have to be relegated to Pet status, if Bryon has a new familiar.

It is a Little Owl, a very common Eurasian species that adapts to a wide variety of habitats, but of course Druk and Bryon, not being trained in the arts of “Knowledge, Animal”, have no way of knowing that.  Nor do they know that it’s official species name is Athene Noctua, which is unfortunate because that fact might be very reassuring to them.

Meanwhile…

Titus makes initial arrangements for the “Bacchanalia.”

He gets some immediate feedback:  The Mercator home just isn’t “right” for this sort of thing, it’s very unlike the family, and they don’t want drunk strangers all over the place.  Such a fuss.  They recommend the nearby Pharo Cove Tavern.  Titus knows this place well, he was here recently.  It’s on a beach, and it is well equipped and ready for any festivity.  Plus, guests would generally be familiar with it already.  It’s a major watering hole and entertainment spot for the upper class.  The Clerics of Bacchus would certainly know the place, they would have blessed it.

Owls and Bacchanaelia.

Bryon sat in the grass and looked at Druk, "This will take a while, you might want to go and come back in a few hours."

Bryon performed the ritual, granting the Owl a greater sentience and knowledge of the world in exchange for being her personal familiar. With the owl's acceptance it came over and landed on her shoulder. It spoke, "Great Clan's woman of the Celts, I am named Thisbrand Calryle Grumactus the first, but you may call me Carl."

Bryon said, "It is very wonderful to meet you Carl. We are having a most spectacular adventure. We are going to lead a rebellion against the Orks, doesn't that sound like fun?"

Carl replied, "Actually it sounds rather dangerous, life threateningly so. Wouldn't you rather stay here, I will catch you some nice juicy rats."

Bryon shook her head and said, "Adventures!"

Carl sighed, "I am going to spend a lot of time being afraid for my life with you aren't I?"

Bryon just smiled and nodded, not really understanding.

Carl looked up into the heavens, "Why me?"

Bryon answered the rhetorical question as she often does, "Because you came when I called. Now let's go join the others and get some sleep, or I will sleep and you can just fly around or whatever you do."

Carl bristled and in a sardonic voice said, "Splendid."

Bryon clapped, "That is one of my favorite words. Splendid!"

Titus is not surprised by the Family's reaction and while he never spoke the words aloud he had been thinking that Pharos Cove might just be the best venue for this party and since he is visiting the slave market with Fanclo Ancius that would be an opportune moment to suggest it.

He asks the family to provide a guest list, which he will add to as needed, as even if they do not wish to host such an affaire they might certainly see its potential benefits.

OOC: Ben, I fear I've lost our timeline, so I may have missed my date with Fanclo. Regardless, I'll pay the tavern a visit.

Druk goes back to his business working it with his employees he will gladly deliver and even produce the invitations at fair market value for Titus, making this the first Bachanalia to have consistent and effective delivery services. You can’t beat having an ancient sex party with new technology.

Owls and Bacchanaelia.

The lead up to the Bacchanaelia...

Druk finds... or rather, recognizes something he's always known.  The oft overlooked couriers and messengers of the city can put a slight thumb on the scales of society, because in any large event, there are a great many invitations going out, and it is always possible to misdirect a few.  A couple of random invitations redirected, and no one is ever the wiser.  If he wishes, Druk can have his messengers ignore a few people, and steer invitations to a few others.  It can't be done in mass, that's too obvious.  But no one ever notices a little bit of sleight of hand.

And whom might he invite or disinvite?  There are about 500 Humans in the upper class of Massilia.  That's actually more than the upper class of Orcs, because despite being in charge, the Orcs have a much pointier social pyramid.  To a leading Orc, other important Orcs are either servants or threats.  Sometimes both.  But Humans are much more complicated.  The upper class is spread across about twenty leading families, and by convention includes the important priests.  There are others who are borderline cases, mostly wealthy but not rich merchants.  As is often the case with Humans, there is great variety.  Some Druk knows to be willing allies of the Orcs, others quietly (very quietly) resist.  Some prize wealth, some knowledge, some fame, some a little of everything.  One aspect of the upper class that is missing here:  none seek military glory.  Orcs look very harshly on that sort of Human.

Bryon, meanwhile, initiates her new familiar and starts training in the ways of being a familiar.

It's harder than she expected, because every time she tries to tell the owl her own name, the Owl responds with "who?"

Titus catches up with Fanclo Ancius, master of the Pharo Cove Tavern.  Fanclo wouldn't be called "Upper Class" by most of the upper class, who would be hesitant to name an "innkeeper" as one of them.  But, financially, he could certainly fit in. And he knows their tastes better than anyone, because that's how he makes his living.

The two visit the Slave Market, where Fanclo was very curious to see the "exotic" slaves recently brought in.  They are similar to Elves in some ways, but in others, not.  They seem to have a certain glow about them.  Literally.  Their bodies are natural light sources- not as noticeable in daylight, but definitely so at night.  Soft, colorful light seems to come from within them, and hover around them.  They speak an odd version of Elven, no one is familiar with it.  The sellers aren't talking about their origin.  Possibly, they want to keep the location of this strange race a secret.

There are a half dozen of them here, both male and female.  Titus learns that only three have already been sold.  Fanclo speculates that people... even Orcs... might be afraid of slaves of unknown origin, who might be harboring secret magical powers.

"Still I am tempted,"  he says.  "They are exotic.  People like to have the exotic around, for parties.  Maybe debut them for your event.  What do you think?"

Owls and Bacchanaelia.

Before he had been sent north to investigate events in northern Europa, Titus had never given much thought to slavery. It was simply a part of Roman culture and, as far as he knows, always has been. During the years in which he became so enmeshed in fighting the Emperor and establishing Theodoric's Kingdom he learned first-hand the influence of Demons and Devils and that many things that might first seem 'natural' might not be.

Slavery is has since decided is not. One of the most difficult things for him is coming to terms with his lack of influence here and how dangerous it is for him to express his 'evolved' opinions about such matters. Accordingly, he goes along to the slave market and does his best to hide his hesitation on the matter.

He finds himself captivated by the glowing elves. Titus has spent a good deal of time around elves of all sorts and these are... Weird. And beautiful. In the back of his mind he had thought since Fanclo had brought up the idea of attending the market that he might buy some slaves and with the intention of giving them back their freedom at an appropriate moment. These folk confirm that idea.

When Fanclo asks his opinion replies while watching one of the particularly fetching male elves, "What if I bought them and rented them to you for the evening? That way you would not need to undertake the expense and risk and I would get the fantastic creatures at my party.... Which, you know I MUST be the greatest Bacchanal the city has ever seen!"

Bryon passes a seated member of the messenger service.

Venetia, Gondioque's chamber maid, opens the door and offers Bryon a smile. Thought that'd be you. Wait a moment, she's with the merchant Alouisius.
...
Soon enough, the Ambassador and Alouisius—a florid, heart man—come to the door. He bows while saying Thank you, Ambassador Bourgogne. Your letter should prove helpful, and I'll give your regards to your family. He bows again and takes his leaves  (taking the first steps backward)...after pausing long enough for his roving eye to take in Bryon (well worth the looking) and her pet (unusual, interesting).

Gondioque turns her eyes toward Bryon.

Druk does indeed manipulate a few invitations here and there.  The Orcs get invited as directed. Many of the conservative Orc loving sycophants do get them close to on-time but some of those who he knows to be most duplicitous are left off and invited late. Thus he works to remove those most likely to notice the meetings Titus and the Princess wish to make at this party.

Druk also invites an alter ego of himself, an Orc disguise he has used in the past. He will be one of the few Orcs at the party and in his disguise he will be available if anyone wishes to curry favor by telling Orcs about unsavory people.

In reply to Gondioque Bourgogne (msg # 88):

Byron curtsies at the man, but clearly her attention is on the Princess. She did notice him as he took her in, and with a smirk said, "You can find me here. If you want to take me on a date or something...you know." Then she winked as she moved past him.

She took Gondioque by the hand and pulled her to her bad chambers, then closed the door. She walked around to make sure the were alone and then she began bouncing up and down on her toes the way she did when she was thoroughly excited. PRINCESS!PRINCESS!PRINCESS! Guess what? I have made the most amazing new friend. Please allow me to introduce Thisbrand Calryle Grumactus the First. Say hello Carl."

"Who?"

"You silly goose."

"Who?" If she didn't know better Gondioque would swear the bird is smiling.

"Ohh! He was talking and everything earlier. I think he is broken. Maybe I can fix him."

"NO! that will not be necessary. Ahem. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Princess Gondioque."

Owls and Bacchanaelia.

Here and there in the city, a few Orcs get unexpected invitations to a "Bacchanalia".

In the house of Speifmek, Chieftain of the Sharp Tusks, and lord of the south side of the city, Speifmek looks at his invitation with puzzlement.

"I do not wish to bother with reading, it should be spoken to me," the Orc grumbles, his way of saying "I cannot read, read this for me."

His Human slave obliges, and reads it.

"What is this thing for?" Speifmek asks next.

The slave explains the tradition.  Speifmek does not look thrilled.  "Humans, drunk," the Orc says.  "Not a happy thought.  Seeing them do... drunk human things.  Makes me sick. But they want me?  Is insult to them to go, or not to go?"

The slave considers this, in deep thought.  He knows Speifmek.  The old Orc has a high standing, gained the old fashioned way:  participating in many battles and somehow not dying.  Not generally fond of Humans, he prefers to stay away from them most of the time.  By human reckoning, he is not exceptionally bright, and certainly not cultured.

Which means he will probably not enjoy himself.  And the slaves, home with the master gone, certainly will.

"They expect you will refuse them, but send this out of respect," the slave says.  "If you show up, it might not insult them, but it will humiliate them and make them sad."

"Then I am going," Speifmek says.  "Do not reply, I will surprise them."

*****************************

At the slave market, Falco is surprised by Titus's offer to do the slave buying himself, but not for long.

"I will go along with that and rent them from you," he says.  "But if you are embarking on some noble cause here I do not want to know.  Be careful if you are.  Do not merely seek to bring them back home.  Right now, other slavers want to know where they came from.  If you should find out where that is, or your slaves do, you might accidentally lead other slavers back to their home, and then they can be cleaned out entirely."

How many does Titus want?

In reply to Ben (msg # 91):

Titus smiles and gives a little laugh in reply, "Of course, my dear! All you need to know is that I intend to become known for my extravagant Bacchanals and as we delightful libertine. Having such stunning exotics to decorate shall help me do so -- if it helps your business as well, then we have both benefited!"

Titus will buy all of them. Doing so will make it appear as if he is trying to do precisely what Falco warns him others might want to do. At the same time from a business perspective it will also make it seem obvious that he is trying to 'corner the market' on these exotic folk.

Owls and Bacchanaelia.

Titus brings home a dozen very peculiar looking Elves.

Not exactly Elves.  Elf-like, yes, but very different.  They shine with their own light, but unlike other pale lights that are easier to see in darkness, being under open sky and illuminated by the sun only makes them brighter.  As if they are drinking in the light around them, and re-emitting it.

They cast no shadows when they walk... they just bathe their surroundings in soft, colorful light.

There are a dozen of them, and they follow Titus back to his home in silence.  Titus can sense that they are very afraid, and in a place that is utterly alien to them.  At the same time, they are curious.  Their eyes dart around, they are alert and observant.  Sometimes, one may want to observe something hidden in shadow.. and with a gesture, it is illuminated with the light of their bodies.

********************

Druk has finishes the management of the message delivery, handling some himself, because the only mistakes he wants made are the ones he has decided upon.

Preparations begin- food and drink is ordered, decoration is decided upon and established.  One does not simply declare a Bacchanalia and have one.  It takes effort.

But in the time Titus has done his slave acquisition, most of it is done.

Of course the entire time she chatters on and on about inane things like men, men, men, and most importantly men. Carl the Owl sat on a window ledge, sleeping because one it is daylight and two he is bored nearly to tears. Then she leaves and goes to prepare herself.

Bryon wore her very best, including her new jewelry she received from the captain. It’s value actually means that her “good” dress now seems much more like a “Noble Outfit” than it did before. She carries no weapons, but she does have her owl, who will wake as the sun descends.

Druk will prepare his own disguise - he will come to the party not as an Ook but as an Orc - Drecht Bloodrattle a persona he has used several times since gaining freedom. Drecht is a sailor and independent privateer who comes and goes from port and has a few acquaintances and rumors. He is considered weak but is tolerated by other Orcs because he may have recently liberated wares to give away.

He tells the others. I will act different at this party and have a different, if you see me, please don't tell my name Druk.
