Chapter 01: New Beginnings

It had been late by the time the royals made it to Mittens' palace, so they all agreed to spend the night. But the Firestar has risen, reminding the people of the Fire Nation of its immense and terrible power. In other words, morning has come and the sun has risen.

Mittens' advisers had plenty of time to scheme up a trap for their new queen and had told the media to spread the news that the Kingdom of Nature was going to make an attempt for the Heart of the Universe in order to conquer the Fire Nation. Once Mittens is awake and eating breakfast, a messenger quickly hurries to her to turn on a portable TV and show her the news about the Kingdom of Nature... who's queen happens to be in Mittens' palace with Raichel and Timothius as guests.

An executive decision has already been made by a number of Mittens' top ranking officials to have a meeting at the neutral zone of the Fire Nation. The previous Fire King had an edict that when such things came about, there is to be a restraining order: Nobody is to leave the Fire Nation without the permission of the ruler... in this case, Mittens.

Meanwhile, such news is, of course, entirely accessible to the non-royal types, such as Darkthorne, Paula, Cham, Emerald, J'Renn, Prism, and so on...

In other words, nobody is allowed to leave and all our characters know it by now. Unbeknownst to our characters, or anyone for that matter, there is a secret group of people rising up against this old edict...

(OOC side: place your characters. Make sure your characters have someone to interact with. I will post once everyone else has.)

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Mittens raises an eyebrow, and puts on an amused face while still chewing her breakfast.

"Speaking of the Nature Kingdom, where's Alexis?  Wasn't she invited to join me for breakfast?  Well... someone invite my guests!  I want them to see this!"

She turns to the head backup adviser.  (The head adviser being either en rout or at the neutral zone already presumably.)  "Tell me more about this edict.  What was the reason for the original?  And what exactly will these top dogs be doing in ye olde neutral zone without me?  Plotting how to overthrow me?  Plotting how to burninate the Nature guys without getting our asses handed to us by them and their allies?  I wonder how popular of an idea that would be with the people given the kickass show they saw yesterday where Alexis was right there watching with me."

This said between bites of breakfast, and in a cheerful tone.

The adviser replies, "Nobody expects Raichel to be the genuine article just yet, so a lot of people are saying Alexis doesn't really have much in the way of allies. And considering how hard the Fire King came down on the Nature Kingdom, many are downright... terrified of you, your highness."

Alexis enters the room, having freshened up and goes to sit in the nearest seat she can find to Mittens. "I heard my name...?"

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Prism had a rough night.  Endless debates over how they should react to being invited to the bloodthirsty queen's palace.  Most of them decided to accept, but a fist size group decided to break off from the main colony and remain outside.  Inside the main colony, the debates raged on over how they should politely exit stage left before things got too nasty among the royals.  And then of course they pick up the broadcasts that war is already being discussed.  Reluctantly, they accept the invitation for breakfast with the Fire Queen.

Meanwhile, Prism Jr. spent the night exploring the capital city.  They found that one of the best places to listen for gossip was in Ye Olde Seedy Tavern (actual name).  There they've heard rumors that not everyone in the fire kingdom likes the idea of war with the Nature Kingdom, and fewer still like the "you're not allowed to leave the planet" edict.  Much conjecture is made over whether the new Fire Queen even knows of the edict, and if she does, what she'll do about it.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

One might think that someplace like 'Ye Olde Seedy Tavern', or any tavern would not be someplace a guy who doesn't need to eat would head for.  However, the Kasketons are quite familiar with certain recurring aspects of reality, and this includes the primary function of various such establishments going beyond just the consumption of food.

For example, there is padding your initial funding before people realize you are immune to the effects of alcohol when the dwarves are being sent to the hospital for liver failure, and you've had no trouble with the dart board after.

That however, was a different Tavern on the other end of Fire city.  Currently Darkthorne was located in Ye Olde Seedy Tavern because of another common aspect of such locations.  Surprisingly relevant to the fate of the land rumors and news.  Also, onion blossom.  Darkthorne is starting to likes those things.

And all this narrative ends with a completely reasonable comment directed at the shiny objects seated next to them.  "You looked taller on the Giagantotron."

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

J'Renn parted ways with Alexis, citing a need to not get too involved with local politics.  Much like Joe she also has a need for the local currency.  She returns to her ship, having her matter replicator whip up a few pounds of platinum ingots, a base metal that seems to have some value to the local populace.  Not only has she learned that, she learned a nod means 'yes', and shaking one's head is 'no', also, if you point at an object, odds are, someone is going to hand it to you.  She decided the only way she'll be able to understand the locals is to dig in deeper into thier minds and read what they are thinking.

Leaving her ship she heads into town, perusing the local vendors.  Unfortunately life isn't like an RPG, a fruit vendor dosen't have the capitol to buy a bag full of platinum, nor do they purchase bags filled with monster eyeballs.  While she shops to sell, she feels the unease of the locals because of the planetary blockade.  She ponders briefly of using her vessel to force her way past it, she dosen't doubt her chances of sucess, just that she'd make an enemy of the local athorities, an unneeded distraction.

This brings her to 'Ye olde seedy tavern'.  She enters making her way over to the barkeep without a word, and sets down the bag of ingots before the bartender, looking at him expectantly...

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Paula left the arena with Miranda and has done her best to stay in close contact with her new friend and learn more about her. Also, she's found it to be extremely helpful to have a companion in a land that she honestly does not know much about.

Rather than heading for any tavern, she walks with Miranda through a local shopping district, window shopping, talking, and trying to learn more about what's going on. She hasn't sensed the presence of Death ever since seeing that odd man in the arena, and without a beacon like that, she appears to be rather lost.

One might even wonder if she's following Miranda more than walking with her.

After walking for a short while and hearing the news, Paula asks aloud, "How could someone use the Heart of the Universe to take over a Nation? Isn't the the Heart supposed to be a source of all knowledge and all things? It almost doesn't seem like something that could BE used..."

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Defying all logic and decorum, Cham managed to sleep after the business in the arena was done... and after stowing away in the Fire Queen's transportation.

On this new day, the talk of war has his ears on fire, causing Cham to forgo his usual random ambling, and listen in on the talk going on around Mittens for as long as possible before getting found and thrown out.

With such an impossible mission, it's no surprise that the blue raccoon had to be fully incognito. For that reason, he's dressed himself up to look like one of Mittens' advisers, shadowing the others and repeating their movements and mannerisms.

Unfortunately, this is far too boring an act for Cham, so he sprouts pitch-black sunglasses and a radio headpiece that he occasionally presses to mutter "Copy that..." and "Ten-four, good buddy." and, every once in awhile, "This is Agent Superball. The situation appears clear..."

Perhaps the only saving grace Cham has in not being discovered is that he's changed his fur color to that of a brown raccoon, making him stand out considerably less.

Miranda hears Paula and says, "Knowledge is power, Paula. All anyone would have to do is ask the question: What would it take to conquer the fire nation? And the answer would equip them with the know-how. If you could get to the Heart, what would you ask it?"

She pauses at a jewelry stand and smiles, picking up a headdress and examining it. It's pretty! Miranda considers taking her helmet off to try it on, but waits for Paula's answer.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Thankfully, despite the "high alert", nobody suspects Cham. He's actually doing a good job blending in. Ironically, his attempts to kill boredom is blending him in even more. Other agents assume he's an especially busy one.

The adviser fills in Mittens in regard to her questions: "The Nature Kingdom's only ally that concerns us is the Water Kingdom. Earth Kingdom's people are said to consider this not their fight and Light and Life are not yet ready to go to arms. By the time they would, we would have won. Besides.. you forget we have allies as well. The Thunder Nation would deal with the Kingdom of Light easily enough and on the very unlikely chance the Kingdom of Life steps in, the people of Chaos would be happy to mess up their plans. As for the edict.."

The advisor takes a breathe. "About 6 years ago, the Emperor ordered this edict as a means of stalling any spies or sympathizers from going to aid whoever they work for. It was also to protect our people from being taken by other nations when off-world. The edict still permits Fire citizens access to come ON to our world. Just not OFF it until the ruler lifts the edict."

He then glances at Alexis, "It's puzzling that Alexis here wants to even bother talking to you since her people are sworn enemies... her very being here may cost her position due to sheer unpopularity when she returns home."

He then looks back to Mittens. "As for plotting, you are still new. Fire people don't stab in the back. It is simply not our way. We face our foes head-on. It is why you currently rule the kingdom. What they might be discussing is how to go about reducing casualties on our side when we inevitably go to war yet again with the Nature Kingdom."

It's around then that Timothius enters the room as well.

----

Meanwhile, the bartender looks at J'Renn and says, "Yeah?" as if waiting for her to make her order.

A skunk sits on the barstool next to J'Renn and slides a coin. The bartender seems to know what the skunk wants and gets it for him, still occasionally glancing at J'Renn.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Prism Jr. looks up at Joe, only mildly surprised at being spotted.  They weren't going to great effort to be concealed, it was only a natural consequence of their small size that most overlooked them.

"That was our mother," they answer, choosing to take the metaphor to a literal extreme rather than spend time on explaining how they work, "We've been separated. She is in the palace as far as we know. We both want to find a way to leave this world."

Prism Sr. arrives at breakfast with just as little fanfare as Raichel.  They sit quietly at the least politically significant seat available.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Mittens turns the TV to face her guests.

"Good morning, your highnesses," she greets with a smile, "I trust your night was comfortable.  I don't know about you, but I find this rather ridiculous.  When I survey the faces of my people, I see a lot of healthy smiles.  I don't see them in chains made of vines.  I mean seriously.  What quarrel have WE with NATURE?  What excuse did the last Fire King have for waging war?  Did your kingdom beat my kingdom in a soccer match or something?  And what's all this 'WHEN we go to war' talk?  Wouldn't that be up to me?"

She rubs her chin.

"Fire types aren't sneaky, you say?  Good.  Then invite a TV crew or 3 to breakfast with me and my guests.  We'll iron this all out in public."

She looks at the other two monarchs.

"Objections?"

To Raichel: "I haven't forgotten your request.  I expect there'll be time to chat in private before the cameras get set up."

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Darkthorne considers Prism's fancy colored words.  They would consider J'Renn's problem and suggest a bank if they knew of it, but they can't read her mind any more than they can read his.

"It was a bit of a surprise considering who was in the crowd with the Fire Queen yesterday.  I had planned on looking around this world more anyways unless something turns up that would require me to head to the other worlds."  Returning to the Kasketon midway point and then going to another of the worlds from there would be a cop-out.  "But this would only be a non-issue to me if a lockdown was all that was happening right now, or if it didn't last a long time."

Darkthorne resisted the urge to sigh, "Politics is not one of my stronger points.  Sarcasm is usually the extend of my duplicity.  Do you have a specific need for getting out of here aside from the understandable worry caused by 'war is coming, lock everyone in'?"

OOC Style: Dohs, I typed up and saved this on the 16'th, but it seems I got distracted and never posted it <.<

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

As the bartender looks at her expectantly, she points towards the "Today's special" sign, she feels that whatever it is he very much wants to sell it.  As an offer she slides one of the polished platinum ingots towards the barkeep.  Stamped on the flat, rectangular slab in Garendian is <0.1 weight measure .9999 pure platinum, .0001 trace elements.>  It weighs about 35 grams.

As she awaits the bartenders decision she senses some barter behind her, at a fully inhabited card table.  One of the card players sets out a gold wristwatch atop a pile of chips, "I'll see that and raise this." the player declares.

J'Renn listens in to the minds of the players at the table, getting an idea of the rules of the game, and the value of the cards.  She also can sense the value of the chips on the table and how they might as well be currency.  She watches a bit longer, wondering if this might be somewhere she could barter her metal.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Paula looks down at Miranda's words, understanding the logic behind the question, "I... I guess I never thought of the question as being as simple as that, honestly.  When asking that which knows all things, it just seems odd to ask for a means of war rather than a means of peace."

She looks at Miranda thoughtfully then, "If it were me, however, I think it would be very difficult to decide on which question to ask.  There's so much that I just don't know... And questions seem to always change in their importance. Hmm, but, if I had to ask only one, I think I would ask... What is it that I am supposed to do in my life?  What is my true mission?  That's always been a question that I haven't been able to answer for myself."

She smiles with a bit of embarrassment at her admission, but brightens up a little as she sees the headdress that Miranda is examining, commenting on how nice it would look on her and urging her to try it on.  Shortly after that, she can't help but look at Miranda with curiosity and ask, "What about you? What would you want to ask Heart, Miranda?"

Cham's ears perk as he pays a little attention to Mittens' advisor go over the specifics of why they have to go to war.  At the mention of them counting on the people of Chaos to mess up the plans of the Kingdom of Life, the raccoon gives a chuckle.

"Hehee... Counting on Chaos to do something... heheh... *ahem* What? Oh, nothing. Nothing at all. Agent Superball, over and out."

He grins a little expectantly as Alexis comes in and is given the passingly negative comment by the adviser, wondering how long she'll stay quiet.  However, when Mittens starts implying that she may not want to go to war at all, Cham gives a disappointed whine.

He listens in a bit further, trying to still look inconspicuous as an adviser, but he turns his head away when Timothius enters the room. if anyone might pay enough attention to recognize him, Cham figured it would be him.

One of the agents near Cham eyes him with some suspicion. "Oh? Having thoughts about the current conversation?"

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Mittens ear twitches at Agent Superball's surprisingly sane commentary on the Chaos Kingdom, and the resulting question, and chuckles.

"You there," she says to Cham with a smirk, "Agent Superball.  You've just been promoted.  Come have a seat and a bite to eat.  Your new duty is to speak your mind like you just did."

She addresses the monarchs: "'For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.'"

Mittens hrms and nods at Raichel's dark prediction.

"The voice of experience.  And I'm not so fancy that I can just pop right back up after being killed... Oh wait...  I CAN do that too!  Go Go amazing adventurer powers!"

She smiles and noms some more breakfast.

"I'm glad to see we're all in agreement as far as the public ironing is concerned."

Mittens glances at Alexis and puts on an uncharacteristically serious demeanor.

"Please bear in mind what Raichel just said.  The opinions of my people have been formed by what they've been told.  I intend to show them the truth of what really happened.  I've already asked why the former king felt justified waging this war, and got no answer.  When the news crews arrive I'll be asking why my people felt justified.  I'm rather new to all this..."

Then to her subordinates: "And someone get me Mr. Top Advisor on one of them communication gizmos.  I want him to be in on this talk."

Back to the monarchs: "I've got a lot to say and ask, but I'm holding out on most of it till the news crews arrive 'cause I'm not fond of having to repeat myself.  Hopefully they'll be here soon, but may as well ask if there's anything you all want to get on the table off the record?  For example, 'It wouldn't be wise of me to say in front of millions of Fire Nation viewers, but I do not approve of yesterday's event.  No not one bit!' or 'This Fire Nation food is giving me indigestion, so I'll not be eating much' or whatever?"

She hrms for a moment.

Back to the subordinates: "Oh and by the way.  Tell the news crews that I insist this be shown in REAL TIME both here AND in the Nature Kingdom.  I'm not going to waste my breath on something that can be edited and twisted before it reaches the eyes and ears of the people of both sides.  So get Alexis one of them communication gizmos too so she can confirm the message isn't being tampered with between here and the Nature Kingdom."

The technology and terminology may be new to her, but she picked up fast on the concepts given that there's a magical equal for most of it where she comes from.

Joe Darkthorne as well as the others from his home do still have some issues figuring that line between 'Uninvolved Exploration' and 'Interdimensional Vigilante Justice'... Okay, so they knew where that line was just fine, but whether or not to cross it, mock it, then burn it was the issue.

The fact the vast majority of their problems back home were flagrantly obvious and preferred active shenanigans over political ones (Well, aside from with eachother) also left them less adept at working out the more subtle problems... So far as possible war was subtle.

"Alright then, hop on and I'll take you over."  They said, offering a hand.  Provided Prism Jr. goes for the ride, Darkthorne would head over towards J'Renn and comment. "Someone who knows you wants to say Hi."

As Joe walks up behind her and speaks aloud J'Renn startles and gasps, spinning on her heels to face Joe as if he just snuck up behind her with a running chainsaw.  She stares at him wide-eyed, as if he was some sort of anomaly that shouldn't even exist.  She thought she was aware of every person in that bar, she even sensed Prism Jr., even though she is shielding herself from the chorus of voices.  J'Renn holds a hand to her chest, taking a few deep breaths.  (Is that a hologram?) she asks Doug, referring to Joe.

Paula smiles at Miranda's answer, nodding to her, "That sounds like a beautiful thing to ask, Miranda. I think, if I were there to hear it, I'd really like to know the answer to that myself."

She giggles as Miranda seems to like the headdress, clapping her hands with approval when she wears it. After she buys it, Paula looks around herself, realizing that it's been far too long since she last went window shopping. Idly, she looks over the wares before them, picking up a few similar headpieces, but shaking her head at them, as none seem to be in her color or style.

Not too far away, however, the skunk sees some blouses that seem to be in a style much like the headdress, looking somewhat tribal and traditional, with colorful designs of dyed flames licking across the bottom. She holds it up against herself, looking questioningly at Miranda, though she doesn't ask her about her fashion input directly. "You've mentioned your friend so many times now... I'm very surprised that he's left you here on your own for so long. Is he in the area?"

He's called over almost immediately after his response, causing the raccoon to hop happily to the table and pull up a plate of food. It's not entirely clear if this is the same food that Mittens herself is eating for breakfast or not, but that doesn't seem to matter as Cham starts rapidly shoving the food into his mouth.

He stops himself suddenly, remember his 'adviser' persona, and assumes his expressionless expression, occasionally shoving a fork full of food into his mouth and gulping it down stoically. Not long after calming down, he speaks up in an official, adviserly tone, "Fluff, sir. That's what's on my mind.

For the opening of the arena, he allowed me to go of my own accord, but was also curious enough about the event to ask me to relay what happened."

She examines Paula. "Get it... I think you would wear it well." in reference to the clothing, of course.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Somewhere, in some kiwi-ridden city full of furries, practically half the population of super-powered individuals that don't even call themselves gods have self-ressurrection powers. Usually through means of technology.

Raichel hears Mittens' bragging about being the second person Raichel has met in a 24 hour period who can resurrect and says, "Rez is handy, yeah." like it's the most unremarkable power in the universe.

Of the people present, actually Raichel is the one to recognize Cham. She is both amused and annoyed as Cham gets "promoted" when he didn't work for Mittens in the first place. And all because the guy is being silly. She weighs whether or not to let Mittens suffer for her impulsive and unwise decision. Sure, it's smart to bring the guy to the table and have him speak his mind whether he's a spy or not, but Raichel doubts Mittens is capable of thinking she might be fooled. Still, Cham's comment is rather funny and she cracks a smile to Cham.

When Mittens gets all serious with Alexis, Raichel glances at Mittens. She's relieved, but tries not to get her hopes up. So far, she fully expects Mittens to be the same as the old tyrant, but worse.... because Mittens is as chaotic as Raichel has seen fire types before without completely crossing the line of insanity.

"You're doing OK for someone who's new to being a ruler," Raichel says, "Especially considering you didn't want this position to begin with." how did she know that? "If I have anything to say off the record, I'll save it for after the live broadcast."

Timothius says, "Off the record? I don't approve of unwilling participants, prisoners or not, being offered as a possible arena spectacle. When your advisers mentioned that, I really had to hold my tongue."

The news crews are entering the room, but are setting up, not live yet. A portable TV of sorts is set in front of Mittens and her top adviser shows up on the screen.

----

Doug looks over towards Darkthorne seemingly unsurprised. <<He is not a hologram...>> Doug telepaths, keeping his calm, <<This universe is vast and while it may be new to you, there are such things as minds you can not sense or invade.>>

Doug tosses some of his own cash at the bartender and pulls the platinum away. The bartender looks annoyed and says, "Hey, now... the young lady payed me with that." Doug replies, "It's counterfeit. I'm doing you a favor." to which the bartender looks furious, but Doug says, "She's new. Leave her be." the bartender reluctantly relents. Doug pushes the platinum back towards J'Renn. <<When you are done with your friend, I'll give you some advice concerning how to get along with locals.. financially or otherwise.>>

He then turns entirely to face Darkthorne and tips his cap in a greeting of sorts.

Alexis says, "On or off the record, I noticed you had far more interest in the arena than you did in what we're about to do right now. I rather suspect many of your subjects have the same attitude towards battle and feel death is just fun and games and that peace is an afterthought. But for everyone's sake, I say this now while it's still off the record so that YOU at least know where I'm coming from without your people needing to misinterpret me. Leaders lead by example, Mittens... when you showed more interest in the arena than in what Timothius or I had to say, while I understand timing wasn't best, it still showed your people how they should treat such matters."

Alexis notices Cham eat with reckless abandon and assumes he's just being chaotic as fire sometimes is. However, to the comment of fluff being on his mind, Alexis coughs, trying not to smile and failing slightly.

She straightens out and says, "Your willingness to set this up and live no less, makes me both hopeful and nervous at the same time. Hopeful that you will make some kind of peace agreement LIVE. Nervous that you will try to kill us on live TV, seeing as you've acted within the realms of crazy enough to do something like that."

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Mittens giggles at Cham's commentary, still not making the connection who he is, but it sure is a familiar kind of zany.  She nods to Raichel when she gives her answer.

"Oh yeah!" she answers Timothius, "That!  I had meant to look into that!  Blasted distractions.  I was very curious how that all works.  Does the Arena have it's own police?  Do they have their own courts?  Or was this some sorta arrangement the former King had where people caught red handed doing something super nasty could be instantly sent into the arena as gladiators, no trial needed?  I wonder what crime they committed.  Someone write up the answers to those questions for me and Timothius."

Mittens waves at the TV with Frank, the top adviser on it.

"Hey there.  Gunna have war talks with Timothius and Alexis.  Figured you'd want to have the option of giving input rather than just watch on your TV."

Mittens faces Alexis and listens to her lecture with a forced frown, trying to suppress a laugh.  When the Nature Queen says she thinks Mittens is crazy enough to try and kill her, Mittens is unable to hold back a snerkle - a chuckle-snort kinda thing.  She takes a deep breath to contain herself and rubs her chin, pondering how to answer.

"Well.  Yes.  Ahem..."

She takes on a mock regal demeanor, even going so far as to strike a pose.

"How dare you and your brethren make a mockery of my nation's most sacred of traditions, take that tone with me, and imply that I have lost possession of my yiddish cup!"*

She shakes her head and returns to her usual relaxed posture.

"Sorry.  Can't stick with the 'regal' persona for long.  I was supposed to say 'our' not 'my.'  I'm glad to hear about the hopeful part.  Try and relax about the other parts.  One, it would be pointless of me to attack a monarch who has a 'haha I can just teleport home at any time I please' magic item.  Second, while there may be some part of my pride that was mildly pinched by your lecture, I literally asked for it, and well, to be frank, you're almost right.  If you hadn't heard, I'm not a native to this region of the universe, much less this nation.  So while this war may be of immeasurable importance to a mother who's lost her son in battle, it's brand spanking new to me.

"Now to turn this around a bit.  I don't recall being told that you or Timothius or Raichel were invited here, much less invited to negotiate a ceasefire.  Call me crazy, but at the time I was thinking: 'Wow!  Unwelcome guests!  One who's at war with my nation!  They must think I'm an idiot!  They're here to take advantage of my being new to politics.  Well I may not know much, but unwelcome guests are usually invited to leave.'  But being the crazy I am, I figured I'd just be neighborly and welcome you to talk about what's important to you once I had completed what I set out to do: escape from the endless chores of a queen for a day.

She turns serious.

"Now to turn this around around once more.  I'm no stranger to war.  Last time I checked, the number of foes I've defeated personally was in the tens of thousands.  For that I'm hated by my enemies and loved by my home nation.  They call me 'hero.'  But I have no illusions about being a 'good' person.  I'm a realistic person.  In war there is only two real options: come to an agreement, or slaughter the hell out of your foe."

She takes a bite of her breakfast, leans back, and glances between her three guests before asking of the TV crews, "Ready to go live yet?"

"Thank you," Prism Jr. says to Darkthorne before hopping onto the bar, facing J'Renn, and bowing.  They're very surprised by the telepath's reaction to his intruduction, and are unable to figure out why she was so surprised by him.

"J'Renn is a telepath," they explain to Darkthorne, "But mother's mind was too noisy for J'Renn to hear her thoughts clearly, and J'Renn doesn't speak the language. Queen Alexis offered to allow J'Renn to listen to her mind's interpretation of mother's words so they could communicate. Would you be so kind as to do the same for us?"

Darkthorne (Who is this Joe person anyways?) was also somewhat surprised at reactions of complete shock at their appearance.  Especially considering appearing out of nowhere with nobody commenting was something many Joes Darkthornes do.

They nod in greeting to Doug, pretend the Bartender isn't inviting a poke in the eye, and put clues together from Prism Jr.'s comments... That were less clues and more direct facts.  "Ah, I thought I recognized that expression."  Granted, the expression was also usually a bit more shocked because hey, a second away from having your head blown off because you failed to mentally dominate the 'primitive mortal' is a bit more shocking than someone saying hi in a bar.

Paula smiles happily at Miranda's recommendation, taking the blouse and paying for it. Though not wealthy, she doesn't seem to have too much of a problem paying for a small indulgence like this, especially when with a friend.

Having the blouse put into a bag for her, she looks over to Miranda sadly, "I haven't been to the Nation of Order in some time, though I do remember it having strict control over most things... Still, it's sad that he's not able to join you in your journey, Miranda. Is it because of his position in there that he's not allowed to go out?" She tilts her head in honest curiosity.

Thanking the merchant and smiling at him, she takes her bag and rejoins her new friend, staying close to her, "I don't know what I would do if I weren't allowed to travel... My master always told me that my growth depended upon my seeing different parts of this universe." She frowns, looking around, "Though, with this lock-down, it seems as if neither of us will be seeing too much more than the Fire Kingdom, at least for now."

Frank's image is fizzled out in favor of a Frank-like cartoon cowboy riding through the desert on a spindly horse. For absolutely no reason at all, a raccoon in a bandit mask rides by on a black horse and tosses a black bomb into Cowboy Frank's hands. The bomb explodes loudly, complete with a 'KABOOM!' sound effect flashing on the screen and Cowboy Frank appearing in a puff of soot, his eyes wide with surprise. Shaking off the dust, he shouts "Hiyo, Silver! Awaaaay!" upon which he holds up a silver dollar and hails a taxi cab, which both he and the horse get into to chase the raccoon bandit down. But the bandit is too crafty! He-

"Ready to go live yet?"

Cham stops suddenly slurping on the movie-theater soda that's somehow come into his possession on the table, wiping his mouth with a deadpan expression fit for the secret service. He gives a singular nod in response to Mittens' question, folding his hands on the table.

Without any fan-fare, the TV goes back to showing its regularly scheduled program of the real Mr. Frank.

The news crews nod in response and go live. "Greetings! This is Harrison with International Burning News! We bring you LIVE today to the Queen and her guests Raichel (ex-queen of Thunder), Timothius (King of Life) and ALEXIS (Queen of the Nature Kingdom and current enemy of all Fire People). The queen has assembled a meeting with the three and is live so that there would be no doubt that this is what happened in the news today. Your highness?"

The cameras point at Mittens.

Mittens eyes practically pop out of their sockets and she almost chokes on her drink when she sees the hilarious antics displayed on the TV screen sitting next to her.  To add to the silliness, by the time she manages to tilt the TV for the others to watch with her, it's returned to the rather boring image of her top adviser Frank.

She blink-blinks, and finally puts two-and-two together.

"Cham?!" she asks Agent Superball.

But it's already time to answer the news anchor.  Mittens puts the TV back, laces her fingers together on the table in front of her, and smiles at the cameras.

"Thank you, Mr. Harrison," she says, "You're quite right to identify my new friend Raichel as the ex-queen of Thunder.  I'd say she removed any doubt of who she is yesterday when she vaporized that super-powered boulder-tossing zombie Blake, whom I suspect we haven't seen the last of.  After seeing what she's capable of, I'm just BURNING to have a match with her myself, but that will have to wait."

She gives a friendly grin to Raichel.

"Given that so far I've only heard the Fire Palace version of the Fire Kingdom's history, I'm very curious to have a fresh perspective.  Raichel.  I would like you to tell us all your take on the events that led to the war between my nation and the Nature Kingdom.  Then, I would like for his highness Timothius give us his two cents, then Queen Alexis, and finally Mr. Frank here.  I'm sure your tech guys can figure out how to make it so Frank won't be a tiny face next to me when he gives his answer.  Also, I've requested that Queen Alexis be given a means of contacting her home so she can have whatever adviser she chooses handy."

Not to mention so she can make sure the broadcast is not being tampered with by the time it reaches the Nature Kingdom.  Mittens then gives a nod in Cham's direction.

"And by the way, I have given this man permission to interject at any time."

She blink-blinks again, as if remembering something.

"Oh yeah.  And by the way.  About this lock-down.  I'm told that it's for the safety of my people."

She skews her lips to the side and shrugs her left shoulder.

"I'm going to have to admit that while I'm not at all fond of this lock-down, the way it was explained to me makes sense, and I'm going to allow it to remain in place for at least as long as these talks are being held."

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Prism Sr. rejoices that they were not included in any way!  As much as they like Alexis, they do NOT want to be included in politics.  Especially nerve-wracking life-or-death talks where the fate of tens of thousands of lives hang in the balance.  Ironically, they would likely make for a great politician because they would wind up saying a whole lot of nothing.

"We strongly support coming to a consensus, and agree that open discussions are an excellent way to keep the lines of communication open leading to mutual understanding and arriving at a common perspective.  Bla bla bla bipartisanship.  Yadda yadda yadda hope in change.  Etc. Etc."

Not that they don't have opinions.  They're beginning to be more convinced that Queen Mittens is crazy like a fox.  It isn't lost on them that the Fire Nation will have the final say in the pose order.  They also notice how she keeps saying she can't wait to fight the goddess who can vaporize the Hulk.  And stuff like "I've killed my tens of thousands," and "I can pull a Jesus and raise myself from the dead no prob," and other dropped hints that she's not to be trifled with.

They speculate on who to believe when it comes to Raichel's reputation.  She's either the worst tyrant or the most even handed monarch depending on who you believe.  Is she out for revenge or does she simply want to rescue her people from an impostor?  Either way she'll likely try to settle the dispute between Fire and Nature in order to get what she wants.  Timothius too, but more out of a desire to undermine death.  Alexis is hard to predict given that she's given to fits of rage... depending on who you believe.  As for Cham...  Why oh why does Mittens put up with him?!  Worse!  She encourages him!  Perhaps fire really is naturally aligned with chaos.

Prism Jr. thanks Doug for offering to translate then points out the live news broadcast on the ubiquitous bar TV.  They request that the volume be turned up.

Harrison points the cameras at Raichel since she was who Mittens requested go first. "To keep this from blowing out of proportion or getting off topic, please let the person who is to speak say their piece. Each person takes a turn."

Raichel says, "Far as the lock-down is concerned, your decision is the wisest given your position. As for the history of your war with the Nature Kingdom, here's how I understand it. One of the Nature Kingdom's villages caught fire and burned down one day. Supposedly it spontaneously combusted, or so the reports said once it reached the ears of the Fire Nation. You have a group under your power known everywhere as The Zealots. They saw this burning as a sign that it was time for Nature to burn. Especially since their emperor encouraged such a belief. He played it like it wasn't his idea and said it was the "will of the flame" so that The Zealots would fight without concern of morality. Most of the attacks since then have been lead by the Zealots. It is my personal belief that the first fire was not an accident or fate, but that someone set that first village on fire to start all this. However, there is no remaining proof. Since then, the Nature Kingdom has done nothing to provoke fights. Only defending and fighting back against their aggressors.

This all happened while I was still Ruler of the People of Thunder. My people and yours were still allies and thus expected support in this blood bath. I refused. Within the same day, I was attacked and killed. Then replaced. Since then, the Ruler of Thunder was a "yes man" to the Emperor of Fire and did everything he said.

However, in recent history, just before you showed up, Queen Alexis had enough and began plans that I believe could very well wipe out the Fires of your Nation for generations. I do not wish to discuss these plans because they may still be necessary and I personally side with the Nature Kingdom. With you coming to power, though, the rumor I've heard is that your nation and the Nature Kingdom might stop this war and make some kind of amends."

She then looks at Harrison and nods. He responds by turning to interview Timothius.

Timothius says, "What Raichel mentioned is the gist of it. As for me and my people, our part in the war was simple. We aided the Nature Kingdom with healing. I should point out, however, that while Raichel was busy ruling her people, my people were kept busy trying to prevent any other spontaneous fires. And, after Raichel's dethroning, prevent any more assassinations. There were certain key assassination attempts that happened shortly after Raichel was killed. There were the obvious attempts on King Maximus Urser and Supreme Organizer Martin Garwin."

One of Mittens advisers leans over and explains out loud, "The rulers of the Water Kingdom and the People of Order respectively."

Timothius continues, "...yes. Sorry. I take some knowledge for granted that you may still be learning. But while those attempts were obvious choices for the Fire Nation to go for, I too was targeted. My people were neutral with the Fire Nation and we never "officially" changed that status. But then there was the assassination attempt on Murla, Queen of Darkness. She survived, but it became painfully clear what was going on. While most of this was being kept from the media for reasons I won't go into for now, it became obvious to those in the know that the Emperor of the Fire Nation was ambitious enough to want to conquer everyone. But he's gone now. And you are here."

He nods to Harrison.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Harrison seems both excited about and fearful of turning towards Alexis. But he does his job and points the cameras at her.

Alexis says, "Five years of Hell. Fire everywhere in places that used to be dominated by beauty. Families torn asunder. Those "Zealots" attacked without regard and killed even defenseless people. Infants met the swords and flames of those Zealots in the name of this "Will of the Flame". All I've seen from this war is life ending everywhere around me while the Life Kingdom did their best to keep who they could from dying. Raichel covered the history. Timothius covered the politics. All I can tell you is how personal it is. This war is not between you and me, Mittens. It is between my people and your people. You and I are just caught in the middle as their arbiters, trusted to command them and direct their passions. Whether the passion is hate, a desire to fulfill some meaningless will, or revenge."

She's burning with hate. Burning. More than fire people. And in tears. The media is eating this allll up.

"You say you have no illusions about being a good person. That you're a realistic person. That the only choices are come to an agreement or slaughter the hell out of your foe. Well I'll turn this back around on you: I came here because you're new. This is true. But because I think you stupid? No. Because my people are desparate enough, I didn't care how unwelcome I was. I was willing to gamble my life on you. On YOU. And you just make light of my situation like I don't know what I'm doing? Well I can tell you this, while death would be a welcome release from what I've been having to see and endure, I will draw every breath for my people. Be warned, though; whoever kills me will be responsible for the entire downfall of the Fire Nation. Not a threat to you in particular, Mittens, but a threat nonetheless. I am so *sick* of being pushed around."

She whipes her arm across her eyes to rub the tears away. "Despite popular belief, I do not want to see your people dead, Mittens. Just the ones responsible for all the death in my Nation. Find them. Punish them appropriately. Do these things and you will achieve peace with my people. I will listen for a counter-offer, of course, but I doubt it will be something pheasable."

Harrison then signals for the news crew to get Frank up on the screen.

Frank gets a confident smile and says, "Well as Alexis just pointed out, it is popular belief that Alexis and her people want to see the Fire Nation dead. The history behind the war was, as Raichel stated, pretty much started by the burning village and the Zealots seeing it as a sign. However, to call it a "war" is still an exaggeration. The Zealots acted of their own accord without any official orders from the emperor. The Nature Kingdom never officially declared war on the Fire Nation. There were no weapons of mass destruction and all of these battles were fought on the Nature Kingdom's soil, as if the point needed further proving that the Nature Kingdom never declared war. If they had, it was neither reported on the news nor acted upon with any assault on our soil. As for these recent events Raichel speaks of, our intel is aware of recent attempts to get the Water Nation to "wash us out" so to speak. And Timothius speaks of assassinations, but the fact is there are attempts on the lives of the rulers all the time. My condolences for the losses, but this is really not as much a war as an unfortunate incident."

----

As per Prism Jr's request, the news is turned up. For Prism, of course, the sound would seem to echo since Prism Sr is broadcasting it at the same time.

Doug is watching the news which is now being broadcast where he's at. But being who he is, he is simultaneously paying attention to the conversation being had by Prism Jr, J'Renn and Darkthorne. Doug answers in a very calm tone, "Platinum is valuable. Too valuable. To sling it around like currency around here can get you killed or kidnapped and held for ransom. The People of Order on constant look out for an imbalance in the currency. If there is more currency flowing than normal, they hunt down the culprit as a suspect for counterfeit. So it would be wisest to obtain a job to keep the currency exactly as-is."

In reply to Paula's comment about communication, Miranda says, "It does. And the communication he and I share is through an invention of his that allows instantaneous communication. He hopes to share it with everyone some day, but sadly has to be very careful what inventions he allows other people to have."

Her attention drawn to the TV, Miranda nods. "Yes... that's her." And as the other royalty there is introduced, it becomes quickly apparent how big a deal this could be. "...oh dear..." Miranda says quietly, watching.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

As soon as Raichel begins giving her speech, something becomes very apparent to Mittens.  The lack of a chat log pen and paper!  She snatches the bottle of ketchup and uses it to scrawl notes on her plate and napkin:

TY.  Will O flames.  No proof.  Yes man.  Big water.  Gank attempts.  Conquest.  Make light.  Your people.  (underline big water)  Punish zealots.  Not war.  (underline big water).

Mittens clears her throat to have the news guys point the camera at her and takes a deep breath.

"Someone get this woman a tissue," she says, indicating the tearful Nature Queen, staring at her notes with a serious face, "And get us all pen and paper."

"Ok.  Now.  Thank you for the compliment, Raichel.  I welcome the current ruler of the Thunder Kingdom to come here, look you in the eye, and refute what you've said about him.  Next point.  Big Water.  Three of you made mention of the Big Water."

She holds out her hands, palms up, and summons a pair of watery orbs above them, trying to look as dramatic as possible.

"I'm no stranger to the power of water.  I myself am a master of water magic.  I welcome water.  Namely, Maximus, King of the Water Kingdom.  I invite him to come here and talk with me openly about how he is expected to kill for others.  I invite him to open the doors of his kingdom for me to talk with him face to face about how he is being used as a threat."

She closes her hands and the orbs vanish.

"Next point.  Conquest.  For those more interested in truth than hate, I will say this about the former King of Fire.  My meeting with him was brief, but in the short time we fought together, and then against each other, he did not strike me as a power-mad conqueror.  He was rational, practical, and most importantly, conceded defeat.  If he were out to conquer everyone, he would have had his body guards swarm me to try and take what he wanted by force.  Instead he congratulated me.

"A conqueror would have left evidence at the destroyed Nature Village that it was some rival nation that started things - to divide his enemies.  A conqueror would have left evidence that the attempted assassinations were the work of rival nations - to divide his enemies.  If this really is all his doing, he sure doesn't fit the part.  Sounds to me like that he, and consequently the entire Fire Nation, was being framed.  My guess is that when he learned I was strong enough to lead, he willingly gave me his crown so he would evade this trap being set for him by his enemies, and free himself up to uncover the truth and clear his name.

She faces Alexis.

"Next point.  If I personally have hurt your feelings, Queen Alexis of Nature, I apologize.  I see in your eyes and your words a blazing passionate fire.  Far be it from me to wash that fire with tears.  I respect you.  I respect your Fire.  I respect Nature.  I accept your trust in me.  I'm flattered you'd put your life in my hands.  You've got guts.

"Next point.  We are not at war.  Everyone here has made this point.  The Nature Kingdom has not declared war, nor has the Fire Kingdom.  Rest assured, if this nation were to go to war, the stars would quake.  Your quarrel is not with the Crown or the Fire Nation's people, but with a specific group's interpretation of the Will of the Flames whom by your own admission never had the official sanction of the Fire Crown, nor the people of the Fire nation.  In fact it's been pointed out that they could have been manipulated into attacking.  That said, I affirm yours and any nation's right to kill the hell out of anyone on their soil who invaded unprovoked.

"Now I must correct my adviser.  If one mother loses her child, people call it a tragedy.  If hundreds or thousands die, it's an unfortunate incident?  No.  As I mentioned earlier, words cannot express the magnitude of the loss.  I have the blood of tens of thousands of killers on my hands from the war on my home world.  I've hardened my heart to that slaughter, but I will not allow such things be described as merely unfortunate.

"Last point.  The Will of the Flames...

She holds out her hands, clenches them into fists, and lights them on fire.  Her blazing eyes stare directly at the camera, looking very dramatic.

"I may not be an initiate of any specific order that you are familiar with, but I am very attuned to the Will of the Flames.  It's as universal as the stars, as familiar as the darkness between the stars.  Fire brings light.  Light exposes truth.  Fire shall bring the truth to light.  Meaning I will find out the truth of what happened the day Nature's village burned.  I will expose that truth for all to see.  I will ascend to the very Heart of the Universe and bring back this truth with me so that none will be able to refute the answer I find.  Then there be no doubt what the true Will of the Flames is."

Or I'll die trying.  Thank goodness for respawning at home points.  She extinguishes the blazing fists and faces Alexis again.

"Because of your courage, I invite you join me when I leave to face the dangers at the Heart of the Universe.  To have the justice you seek, you must first have the truth I seek."

Millions of tiny bugs pissing in their pants.  Prism Sr. is terrified by the heavy hitters duking it out verbally.  They remain motionless, holding their collective breath, waiting for a reply from the other monarchs.  They may be predominately atheist, but a lot of them are praying Cham doesn't do something to spark a war at this very very sensitive moment.

Prism Jr. is also very nervous about Prism Sr.'s situation, but being more removed from it makes them able to think more clearly.  Besides the public apology blunder, and the fact that the Fire Queen didn't deny it when Alexis claims she's not a good person, and several other details, the flaming-eyes kitty made a brilliant move.  Even if the Heart is a myth, she will be working on a common goal with the Nature Queen.  This is exactly the kind of symbolic move that would prevent a war.  Not to mention in the unlikely case that if the Nature Queen turns her down, it will totally destroy her credibility.  If she's not willing to go, people will call those crocodile tears.  Win-Win for the Fire Queen by all appearances.  They consider the telepathic company present and realize the huge help they could be.

"You should join them, J'Renn," they suggest, "Your telepathy would be perfect for preventing any misunderstandings between them."

((OOC:  Went back and discovered that Prism Jr. didn't reply to J'Renn's greetings.  This is totally the fault of the player.  They would have said hello back.  ))

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Prism Sr. was probably not doing as poorly as the narration department exaggerated on.  Prism Sr. doesn't have any pants.

Darkthorne looks to J'Renn.  "Various soft metals tend to be valued for some reason, even in locations where they are unaware of their value in technological components.  As for the currency angle, She's supplying raw materials, not counterfeit currency." they take a moment to consider this.

"However, considering the nature of this kingdom and those around it, I suspect they have gotten people who can supply valuable materials with the same method I suspect you employed.  So while what you have been waving around now shouldn't be too bad, any more even in raw materials is likely to attract notice by those order people, if for different reasons.  Or not. It really depends on if they are able to track every form of wealth across all the local worlds at all times."  Darkthorne wouldn't underestimate the lengths bookeeping someplace called 'order' would go to though.  The Kasketons had never outgrown currency.  But this was because they never had the luxury of developing their own in the first place.

As the epic speeches start and go by on the bar provided video, Darkthorne considered Prism Jr's suggestion.  "They do know J'renn already... I'm always rather reluctant to encourage that sort of thing though.  But, I'll come along if she decides to."   They look to J'renn again.  "It's your call if you do so or not though."

J'Renn takes the translation of the TV broadcast directly from Doug's mind.  Despite all the political posturing and showmanship there is one thing that does interest her greatly.  (They are considering going to the heart of the universal core.  Just to observe the attempt would clear up countless questions.  And also being neutral in this area of space they might actually trust me to transport them.  That alone will increase thier chances.  How would I go about making such an offer?) she asks around the small group she's with.  (There is no harm in any of you coming with me, either.) she offers.

When Mittens finishes talking, she puts a hand to her head softly, "She's really planning on going there? And... oh... this almost sounds bad." She looks over at Miranda cautiously, "This all sounds like it's getting crazy fast... There's so much talk about death and war... I don't know what to expect... Miranda? Her new purchase today is quickly forgotten in the light of all of the seriousness that's befallen the airwaves.

Upon being given a pen and paper at Mittens' request, Cham immediately turns to drawing cartoons and comic strips, making sure they have lots of explosions to mimic the talk about past war that Mittens brings up.

At her talk about the framing of the Fire Nation and the Will of Flames, Cham nods unable to help adding, "Yep! We're not at war and we don't wanna be, but, if we were, we'd totally kick your tails!"

When Mittens finishes, Cham begins a polite slow clap, going back into his quieter 'Adviser' facade. He speeds up the clap in case anyone joins him, but, even if they don't, he stops shortly after.

After Mittens is done, he tilts his head, "Hey... what if the Heart of the Universe thing tells you that you have to ask again in ten minutes, or that the prediction is hazy, or that spoons don't really exist, or that you really are supposed to go to war and blow everyone away? You've gotta do that then, right?" He takes a moment before pushing his sunglasses up and adding officially, "Sir."

Raichel listens to the words Mittens chooses. She notices the water orbs and the claim of mastery over water. Good flaunting there, but possibly over the top. Raichel knows a bit about water power too, but she considers what she knows to be nowhere near enough to claim mastery. Then again, she's so attuned to lightning, Raichel is still surprised she knows anything about water.

Raichel speaks up when Mittens offers for Alexis to go. "A trip to the Heart of the Universe? You make it sound like a picnic. I've been there once and claimed some of its secrets. I know the danger. Not just the danger of going there, but the danger of actually managing. I highly recommend you not promise your people you will pull it off, lest the Heart make you a liar."

Raichel also knows the laws of the universe and that if you say you'll do something, fate itself tends to get in your way.

Alexis says, "I will go with you to the Heart." while she believes there is some merit to what Cham said, she gives him a rather angry glare. But when she hears him making a point about what-ifs, Alexis says, "He has a point. If the Heart of the Universe tells you to go to war with Nature, do you plan to?" That question is so unfair and a double-edged sword, but Alexis has to know which edge of the sword Mittens chooses.

Harrison is having a ball. Oh, we mentioned this? Too bad!

----

Doug looks at J'Renn. "There is a place people understand one must go in preparation for entering the Heart. Any other method is assured destruction. I can show you the place and if you meet them there, you can offer your services there. Such a gesture will be seen favorably and help you greatly in fitting in around here."

He then looks at Darkthorne. "Raw materials or not. If it's so much as an extra atom of currency that has not already been properly brought into this place, they will notice."

Doug then looks at Prism Jr. "Your suggestion has much merit."

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Mittens smiles, managing to suppress a giggle at Cham's commentary.  Had she dared to look at his comics, she'd probably have lost control.  This after her more or less saying "war is no laughing matter!"

She takes much better notes this time now that she has the proper tools.  Inside, she's having a hard time finding the words to answer Cham's and Alexis' questions.  A two-edged sword to invite Cham to speak his mind.  Mittens is pretty sure she mentioned the "dangers at the Heart of the Universe..."

"Dangerous you say?" she answers Raichel, wagging her tail with an eager look on her face, "I wouldn't have it any other way!  And this coming from the resurrected thunder goddess!  I can hardly wait!  Of course, you're welcome to join me, your holiness."

Mittens then turns to Timothius.

"As are you, King of Life.  Heck.  So's your watery ally.  I wanted to meet him face-to-face anyhow, and what better way to get to know someone that to team up with them in a life-or-death quest for truth?"

Then to Frank.

"It's nice to hear you boast of your queen.  But I won't call them pansies or heroes until I see some evidence supporting one or the other.  Maybe he would water bomb us on Alexis' behalf.  Maybe the Thunder King would lightning-bomb them on our behalf.  I prefer to fight my own battles and speak on my own behalf, so I offered him the opportunity to do the same, in any of the three places mentioned, and chat with me about his people being used as a threat against my people."

She's then smirks and looks over at Alexis, confident she's found the right answer.

"I've been asked twice now what I would do if the Heart gave me an answer you don't want it to give me.  If it does, I'll give it another shake to see if it was just pulling my leg like Cham suggested it might.  Or perhaps I'll hand it over to you to give it a shake and see what you get.  War or no war, I'd like to fight you one on one at the end of this quest.  Whether it's on friendly terms or not remains to be seen.  I'd prefer on friendly terms, but I maintain my earlier statement: I pity the fool who goes to war with the Fire Nation."

Back to Frank.

"That said, I pity the fool who challenges another without being prepared to stand behind what they said.  Frank threw down the gauntlet to the royal family of the Water Kingdom.  You're not a pansy who hides behind your kingdom, are you, Frank?  In that case, let's see if you live up to your own standards!"

She faces the camera.

"The royal family of the Water Kingdom may select any member of their royal lineage to answer him face-to-face on neutral ground of their choosing!

"Now.  A few more points of order.  One.  The lockdown is hereby lifted.  Kinda necessary if I'm to leave for the Heart and Frank is to leave for his face-off without breaking the laws of our Kingdom, now isn't it?  Two.  The leaders of each of the other nations are invited to select one among them as a representative to join me on my quest, Alexis already having offered to represent her nation.  And Three.  I hereby BAN any further attacks on the Nature Kingdom until I verify if it is justified.  Any citizen found guilty of breaking this law shall be handed over to the Nature Kingdom for them to exact whatever justice they see fit.  Closing comments from those present?"

Looking into the local Macguffin definitely fell under Darkthorne's job description.  "That would depend on what services they wanted and the methods of demanding it, but it most likely can not hurt to look into it if you think it will help."

Most Kasketon's would be much more paranoid about all this, but they learned early in that exploring new dimensions via assault squads making tactical entries and examinations of every. single. location, was not really that good of a plan poli... polit... that weird thing.

OOC Style: Kasketon's do not give their sworn word.  Something many consider not even worth listing as a flaw until the 'swear to do this plot thing' moments come along.  Not that it would be an issue here, but the kind of quirk worth a reminder of ahead of time.

He pushes up his sunglasses again and they make a dramatic 'sheeen!' sound as a reflection of light moves along them.

At Mittens' asking for closing comments, Cham pulls out a gold star from hammerspace and lays it down on the table, "I think I'll save this idea as a favorite so far. Also... Hehe... this might end up kinda funny. Every nation gets one representative to send so that they can stick a fork in the other representatives when their backs are turned! Except for Chaos, though. They might use a spork... and that'll just be over the fighting for who gets to be the leader today and who gets to be the representative!"

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Mittens once again is made to smile by Cham.  Especially the bit about spork duels.  She doesn't understand the significance of the gold star but doesn't ask.

"Heh, yeah.  I'll be on guard against back forking or sporking, but I take that risk and invite all the nations to send an observer so they can keep an eye on me and know for certain I'm not plotting to back-spork their nation."

"Very good," Mittens says to Frank, somewhat surprised that he didn't back down, "Return to the palace immediately.  We'll be leaving soon."

She then nods to Prism.  Whoever those people with the Nature Queen were yesterday sure seemed neutral enough, and having a telepath around could be very very handy.

"A neutral pilot from a neutral nation," Mittens echos before answering, "I approve of this arrangement on the condition she shows me how to fly it.  Sounds like fun!  King Life has already approved of the idea too.  Anyone else who objects can simply not go.  As for Raichel's statement against war, and Alexis' warning, I feel inclined to clarify my own position.

"War may be a losing proposition, but often there's no choice.  20 years ago the nation I was born in joined in alliance with two other nations to defend themselves against annihilation from an enormous invasion of demons and beastmen.  The invaders wanted nothing less than to kill every last man woman and child of the alliance.  Hopelessly outnumbered, we won our safety at a great cost, but we HAD to pay that price.  Had we not taken a stand, we would have lost everything.

"Now 20 years later the beastmen and demons are on the ropes, themselves facing extinction.  The alliance wants nothing less than to kill every last man, woman, and child of the enemy.  The enemy has little chance to survive, but they fight on even when hopelessly outnumbered.  Pride is all some of them have left to fight for because hope of survival is long gone.  I can respect that.

"I can appreciate your concern for my people, Alexis.  For that I thank you.  I want you to know that I do choose my words carefully.  Some creatures may defend themselves with stealth and silence, but the Fire Nation is a mighty dragon!  We may be enjoying the warmth of the sun for the time being, but so long as I wear this crown we will not be complacent!  We will roar at the horizon to warn anyone with ears to hear!  The words I choose are these:  Those who do not provoke the dragon need not fear it's wrath.  But to those who would dare challenge this dragon, even should we be hopelessly outnumbered, we will defend ourselves - our lives, and our honor!

"Meeting adjourned."

She then faces Prism.

"Now.  Lead the way to the pilot."

"By your command," Prism Sr. answers with a bow before heading in the direction of Prism Jr. and J'Renn.

"Anyone willing to carry me?" Jr. asks, figuring the live broadcast of Mittens' speech is enough that they don't have to relay the obvious news that Prism Sr. and the Royal Flush Gang approved of the idea and are on their way.  They also figure it's obvious enough why they'd request being carried.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Darkthorne wonders on the comments from Raichel Alexis about agreed as Weak in general Water Kingdom of course being obvious winner in a war.  They suspect either a case of 'pacifist always have the best weapons', or 'peaceful cultures have no problems wiping out the entire civilian population with natural disasters because a few jerks are evil so it's okay'.  If Raichel isn't exaggerating at least.

"I'll carry you I guess.  I don't suppose hanging around on a shoulder is a viable option?"  Regardless, Darkthorne goes to pick Prism Jr. up.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

J'Renn picks up her bag of plat and projects to the group, (I'll have my vessel pick us up here.) she states.  J'Renn concentrates sending a message the few miles to the spaceport (Pel'Rae, I am requesting a pickup at my coordinates for me, two others, and a small compound life form.  Please grant them guest access)  {Aknowledged.  Pickup will be ready in 5 minutes. Shall I prepare refreshments for the guests?}  (Yes, and we will be taking on board more later. Light refreshment now, and prepare Tapas for later.)  {Aknowledged.}
J'Renn returns from being a little spaced out to let the group know (My ship will meet us here.  It will be within teleport range in 5 minutes so you will all have time to prepare for transport.)

Paula looks at Miranda nervously, looking away briefly as she thinks about if she really wants to do this.

"It does sound rather big... and I don't think I've ever been involved in anything on this kind of scale before... But, well, I do trust you Miranda." She smiles at her and gets inside the spacecraft Miranda's turned into, "If you say that your friend knows what's going on, then I believe you! Besides, Master Ito really wanted me to make friends while I was away, and see new things. Maybe I can do that here, too."

Sighing and going through a silent prayer routine, Paula tries to calm her nerves and prepare herself for this.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

At Mittens' assurance that she's welcoming some kind of representative from all of the nations, Cham gives a little bounce of excitement but quickly straightens up over-officially.

As she adjourns the meeting, Cham straightens his sunglasses and gets up with the party, seeming like he's planning on following at least for a little while. However, he almost immediately stops when an odd ringing is heard. It gets louder and louder before Cham pulls out a red rotary phone from nowhere and picks up the reciever, "This is Agent Superball. Adviser to the Queen of Fire and avid bouncer... Mmhmm... Affirmative... Copy that."

He holds up the receiver for Mittens, stone-faced, "Sir, it's the Chaos realm. They're wanting to inform you that a representative has been chosen and will arrive shortly." As soon as he says that, however, a blue shape begins to work its way out of the phone as if it were some kind of rabbit hole. The shape forms arms and hands and grunts dramatically as he pushes himself out of the receiver until he finally pops out at his normal size. There seems to be a spork lodged into his back.

It's Cham! "Yep! It's me! I'm totally not lying about being a representative of Chaos! Now we get to spend even MORE time together, fending off anyone who would get in our way to the Wizard of the universe!" He pulls the spork out of his backside and begins fencing the air with it.

Behind him, Agent Superball is standing stone-still and still holding up the phone stoically.

Alexis says, "Ch.... riiiight." she is amused simply because of how confused she is by Cham, but this barely pulls a helpless smile from her. She has a sense of humor, it's just that this has all been very emotionally stressful for her.

Doug uses the 5 minutes to finish his drink, prep the bunch for what the starting point will be like and some basic rules about it, such as not entering until everyone agrees lest the huge conglomerate of royalty see you as trying to usurp their power/influence, etc. Basic common sense, but still. Once aboard, Doug seems unphased by the beauty of the ship, remaining expressionless. He helps guide them to the right place and they would be there shortly.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Raichel loses it and laughs, seeing Cham spill out the phone. She hugs herself, eyes squinted closed and slightly hunched over. After so long putting up the ruse of being serious, Cham broke it with a superior entrance. Raichel has to admit she can't beat an entrance like that and won't even try. "Welcome aboard, Cham." she says in a pleasant tone, calming herself but still smiling.

Timothius is laughing also, covering his mouth to hide the fact despite his voice betraying him.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Miranda is so small, though, that "getting inside" her is akin to getting inside a moped. You ride on it. XD

Either way, Miranda covers the two of them in a force field before going at Mach 2 or so until hitting space, then she just warps. With the sudden shift in speed, Miranda makes it to the destination around the time J'Renn does, give or take. Seeing the same things everyone else does, Miranda lands with Paula and transforms back to her normal self.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

(Fast forwarding a bit to get RP going. J'Renn, Mittens, Darkthorne, etc can play out the meet, greet and flight in a separate thread if desired. Please lemme know on OOC channel.)

Frank is there at the Gateway of the Path to the Center. He did not even bother engaging in conversation with the water royalty that's there since he knew nobody would be watching so it'd be his word against King Urser's as to what all has been said.

Shelly is there with her father King Maximus Urser. But something is different. Rather than the King wearing the crown, Shelly is. She is seen smiling and playing with a handheld gaming system.

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Also there is a team of 6 cherubs. The li'l angels are all sitting in a circle, praying. Upon everyone's arrival, the cherubs stand up and line up in an almost military fashion in greeting to the new arrivals. No saluting, though.

Interestingly, Murla, the queen of darkness, is also there. She has an amused smile on her face and a slight sneer like she sees everyone here as her playthings.

Miraculously, the current King of Thunder is here as well. He is holding a staff and looks at Raichel with a nervous look.

The only others of note here are a huge rock monster standing about 20 feet tall and some beautiful man with white hair dressed in off-white/grey robes and holding a large wooden staff that looks more like a stick found in the woods. The only person besides Raichel who might know THESE two would be Blake, but he isn't likely here for a number of reasons. Speaking of whom, there is no representative from Death. That is unsurprising.

The place is certainly magical looking. There is a rainbow colored path made of who-knows-what and seems to converge from paths that stretch off to the various planets. The path just stops at the gate. People can not see a path on the other side of the gate and any attempt to go to the other side of the gate simply shows the person the backside of the gate. It is clearly an extra-dimensional gate of sorts.

The gateway itself is simply that. A large, thick gate that seems to be made of every attribute whether blunt or otherwise. For instance, it's existence hints at it being made of order. But the gate is not consistent, continually mutating before one's very eyes, making it also seem to be made of chaos. Interlaced throughout the gate are fire, water, lightning, vines/tree branches , and an unsettling low-pitch grinding sound like lions growling and metal twisting can be heard from it. The gate forms eyes when everyone is gathered. The eyes are made of pure light, only interrupted by the skulls it has for pupils. It turns its gaze directly at each person there.

The place quakes a little, the sounds of the gate get slightly louder and the quake slowly passes. In the same sound that gate sounds have been growling with, a voice can be heard coming from the general direction of the gate, "Get familiar with each other. When you are ready, I will give you the rules."

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Hundreds of millions of tiny crystal bugs are cracking up from Cham's hilarious entrance, making Prism's colors shimmer like a rainbow disco ball.  They work together to laugh as a whole so the giant monarchs know that they too thought the joke funny.  They're led outside along with the others to a limousine and ride shotgun so the chauffeur knows where to find Prism Jr. and the others.

Prism Jr. notes the plan to stay and wait for the ship to arrive and informs Darkthorne and the others, "The royals are on their way. Shoulder will work nicely when they arrive, thank you."

Re: Chapter 01: New Beginnings

Mittens giggles at Cham's antics, smirking at how much they have in common when he starts fencing the air.  She still does that all the time.  Usually with a sword, sometimes with a fork.  But he definitely more than one-ups her crazy.  And having someone around who makes her sane by comparison can be a good thing.

Once at the limo, she opens the sun roof and sits on the roof to wave at the crowds of cheering citizens like she's some kind of rock star.  Individual chauffeured luxury vehicles are provided for each of the monarchs in the motorcade.

"Hey, someone get us all name tags and pens," Mittens commands to her secret servicemen.

Where she comes from, people's names hover over their heads.  Helps a lot when so many look like they could be identical twins or gear covers distinguishing features.

Upon arriving at the Ye Olde Seedy Tavern, she hops off the limo, waves at Doug and the others, introduces herself, and announces: "Prism here said to expect a nice ride from J'Renn.  Let's get this show on the road!"

After labeling herself, she begins passing out name tags and pens.

"And for the sake of those of us who don't have perfect name-recall, please wear a name tag."

Mittens makes no mention of "what's with the tiny Prism clone on that person-I've-never-met's shoulder," or "Who's the skunk?  Or the robot?  Or the other skunk?"  She figures these questions can be answered readily enough in time and would only slow down getting on with the adventure if asked now.  Her elite guard persuade her to allow a few of them to go with (assuming J'Renn's ship has room for so many passengers.)

Prism does NOT want sticky name-tag all over their backs, so they just grab hold of the name tag around the edges with their thousands of chest hands rather than peel-and-stick.
