OOC: Notes for New Players

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE JOINING
1) This is a long running game, with a great deal of high-quality posting.  The game is strongly based in the Aberrant-Trinity setting materials, though it diverges from the primary timeline presented therein.

2) Players are expected to have good writing skills.  No one will be a writing nazi, but we all try to maintain the quality of our writing/posts as a means of creating an engaging and immersive setting for one another.

3) There is a lot of story.  You should read some of it.

4) There is a power differential between characters; it roughly breaks down into multiple power tiers based upon when the players joined the game.  This power differential is a component of the setting, and while players tend to be responsible and character-appropriate with their use of power, it can result in one-sided exchanges at times.  If this is something that bothers you... well, it isn't going away.

THINGS TO READ
0) Familiarize yourself with the Aberrant setting; a casual read of the main book should be adequate.

1) Read "Rules of the Game" for information on the mechanics changes that may influence how your character plays, and information on posting conventions.  Note that a few of the rules listed are still in flux (primarily anything to do with DV).

2) Read "Dawn of a New Era" and "An Era of Discovery" for some scene and tone setting.

3) Read through the most recent "story thread" (it will usually be the most active current thread, but ask on the OOC chat thread if you aren't sure).

4) Read through your choice of character-development threads: OOC: Character Description and Transhuman Traits (necessary reading), Vignettes (probably the richest thread in this area overall), Team Vignettes, and About the Characters

5) Read through your choice of the following primary story arc threads, arranged in reverse chronological order: Full Circle, Columbian Conflict, Drug Wars (both), Equatorial Wars, Training Camp

6) Read through your choice of side plot threads: Las Vegas, Headquarters, Ties that Bind, Socializing on the Strip, Off the Clock, Terragen

CHARACTER CREATION
0) Find and use the Character Sheet Template thread: copy/paste the contents into your character details/character sheet section.

1) Make a human, as per step one of character creation int he aberrant rulebook.  Pick Merits and Flaws (up to 10pts, they are in the aberrant players guide).  It is advisable to buy at least a pt of quantum and some willpower with flaws/bonus points.  Don't buy attributes and abilities beyond your base allocation.

2) Distribute 3/2/1 mega-attributes between your categories of mega attributes.  This works just like assigning your regular attributes (choose primary (3), secondary (2) and tertiary (1) categories, distribute dots of mega attributes accordingly)

3) Finish the nova portion of character creation, but spend 35pts*.  It is recommended that you purchase any key skills or attributes to 5, and that you purchase quantum fairly high.  Feel free to use the weakness/strength system for modifying powers that is presented in the Player's Guide.  Some leeway will be given here, as new characters should be relatively strong** for their limited experience, but weaknesses should still make sense.  Applying the "Permanent" strength to a power requires gamemaster approval.

*This number varies, depending on when you started the game.  Original characters, for example, only received around 20pts, but their 100's of experience points make up for any initial bonus that newer characters may receive.

**Most new characters should be quite strong in a few limited areas of expertise/power, though they will have more limitations and weaknesses than a long-running character and they will have lower ranks in most mega-attributes and powers not in their areas of expertise.
