Asking for a portrait searcher

From another thread:
Skald:
Flagging portraits as favourites, perhaps ?  And a filter on favourites as a side.   Might be worth someone posting a suggestion over in RPoL Development. :>

So, taking this advice, should it be possible to have a portrait search function?

The possibilities suggested on the thread were:

  • To just be able to ask for a specific portrait when looking at the list (e.g. a search button where you can ask for a specific one with its denomination, as it could be (a random one) mhf221)
  • To allow this denomination to be directly put when setting the portrait
  • Having a limited list of favorite portraits (let’s say 10)

Any of those options would allow to use your favorite portrait (if you have any) on a character without having to search it through the long list.

BTW, while I understand the letters in the naming to be about male, human, fantasy, etc, I’m not sure what does each one mean and in which order they are, and sometime the keyword search seem to fail (e.g. if I set it at male and human, the first portraits appearing are females, as fcm024 or fmb195, that appear on the first page with this search)

The naming convention is based on the categories going from left to right.

Example: FFD### is Female Fantasy Demi-Human

The search results returned are based on tags.  The tagging is incomplete and not always accurate.  If you click on "show tags" it will show you what an image is tagged with which should help explain why it was returned in your search results.

I'm not sure what the status of the tagging program is, so I'm unsure if it's useful to report potentially incorrect tags or to whom those should be reported.

I would find the ability to set up some sort of temporary "favorites" gallery quite useful myself.

Currently I just open the individual images in new tabs as I'm considering, then click through them to decide.  Having them on a single page would be a nice feature.

+1 from me for the tagging/searching on Favourites !  Be just a little odd even by my standards if I didn't !  ;>

Would be of use not only for deciding between a few different portraits for a new character but also in game where characters can shape shift or otherwise alter their appearance (ability/spell/potion, etc) so they could easily access the ones they commonly use.

A shortlist of favourite portraits gets my vote as well.  Finding the right image for my character has always been a crap-shoot.  A large part of that has gone away with the addition of custom portraits for each game (just get your DM to upload your portait, and you're done!), but this is really useful feature.  Not to mention, some DMs are more creative/literary than they are technical.  Resizing/downscaling/uploading images can honestly be beyond their skill level.  This feature would give players one more option at their fingertips.
