Suggestion: Requesting Highly Active Players option

I would like to see an option in the game browsing menu to show only games requesting players who are highly active. I like playing D&D but the games I'm in are so slow, it takes hours for even the smallest conversation because players go offline and don't return for hours. I try not to keep players waiting because I know full well how annoying this can be so I refresh the pages every 5-10 minutes to make sure I don't keep anyone nor anything waiting, and I believe there should be the option for games requesting players who do the same, for players who are actually available and active and want to play an averagely paced game. It would certainly be helpful in my opinion, I'm sure it'll be helpful in others' opinions too.

I tried to run such a game. The results were hotly contested and the game crashed partly for that, and partly other reasons.

Maybe just a "average response time" or something in our profiles?

Just to give an idea how often someone checks the site and posts?

Even just to help decide between players who put in RTJs?

Suggestion: Requesting Highly Active Players option

There was a fairly extensive discussion on this theme a while back ... a lot of the difficulty stemmed from everyone having a different interpretation of what highly active (or fast/medium/slow/you name it) posting rate meant to them.

Have a look at:

In reply to Skald (msg # 4):

Very good. Thank you sir.

Maybe it could be as simple as "last logged on" or "last viewed" or something.

Not sure. Probably best to continue in the other thread.

The Cast list already has "Last Logged On" listings.

But yes, this is basically a wildly differing opinions forums drama mechanic.

Also, OP. you can just use the pop up sticky list rather than manually refresh, it even has an audio alert setting for normal/private/both... Or was your problem that it's lowest auto refresh is a minimum of 15 minutes, instead of every two minutes?

Well it's technically on topic, when the OP is talking about hammering the refresh button literally every 5 minutes on the subject of "active players".

Re: Suggestion: Requesting Highly Active Players option

Thanks for letting me know about that and the reason I practically spam refresh is because I originally thought itd update when someone posted but by the time it lets me know someone posted it'd be about an hour or two after they posted something. And in response to the trying to run a high active game how did it crash?

DeadSlayer54:

To boil the relevant half of it down, a difference of opinion on whether about a thousand posts a month was too many. At the time I felt bad about letting enthusiastic people just run amok in a Slice of Life while also having people who posted about once a week if it was even relevant at that point because the world had already happened around them, and left. Telling people "I won't field complaints about posting speed" was the wrong solution, although it did get a really fast paced game. The fact that the game was basically a visual novel without the visual, and in forum format probably helped the speed (unless you were on the slow end, obviously)

I've settled on some approximation of "I don't expect more than two posts a week, but go for it if you can do it without post hogging" (really with my condition 2 a week is a promise I can maintain if I'm alive, even though I'm sometimes capable of more.)

Re: Suggestion: Requesting Highly Active Players option

When action is intense and I find I'm hitting refresh to the point that I cannot work, I rely on the (Unofficial) RPOL Notifier App on my phone.  Normally I have it on Do Not Disturb mode, and then "free" it when I need to force myself away from the game.

(I hope mentioning the app in this context is ok.)

In reply to SWolfe (msg # 12):

Right on. I have looked at it but haven't played with it yet. Someone in this thread turned me onto the popup thing, but it only refreshes every 15 minutes.

I haven't been involved in a game yet that posted more often that that though, so it's working.

I DESPERATELY WANT TO TURN THIS WHOLE SITE INTO AN APP!

I wrote a little php script that I use to make the site mobile friendly.
If anyone else is a nerd and wants my code, I'm happy to share it.

Thread talking about it here: link to a message in this forum

Jase says he's working on the responsive version, but I feel like the site could really grow if we were in the app stores and if it was WAY easier for people to check and post from their phones.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic, apologies.

I do love the idea of an "active player" badge. It would help when fielding RTJ's and determining if I wanted to play in a game.

If the community came up with something we all agreed on it would be nice (YEAH RIGHT?!)

hasn't posted in over 60 days = inactive
only once a month = extremely slow
Less than 2x a week = slow
Like 2x a week = active
1x a day = extremely active
More than 1x a day = lives on RPOL :D

And I would think these "posts" should only be considered if they are in a game, not in forum threads like these.

Just my $0.02

Re: Suggestion: Requesting Highly Active Players option

I'd just like to point out that for a great many users on this site, once per week would be considered highly active (some people have extremely busy lives away from RPoL).  But by the definitions you provide above, that would be slow.  And a player who only posts once per week in forty different games is not the same as one who posts forty times in a single game in that time span, even though both have posted forty times.

Incidentally, quantity is not necessarily the same as quality.

-1 for any system that rates players for speed of posting (or anything else, for that matter - RPoL has a long-standing policy against rating users).  How often any player accesses the site is entirely up to them, and is nobody's business but theirs.
