Aadun walked towards the dining hall with his hands shoved into his pockets.  Since he still had a few moments of peace, his shoulders were slumped forward and he kind of dragged his feet.  When the turbolift opened and he sees that he is stepping in behind his two female companions he stands up a bit taller and gives a friendly smile.

"Hello," he says in greeting and his gaze lingers on Kala for a moment or two.  "Please don't take this the wrong way, since we're wroking together and all, but that dress looks really good on you, Kala."  He decides to give them a few moments to get seated before choosing one for himself.

Kala nodded to Aadun. "I doubt I'd take it any wrong way. Aside from my normal clothing, this is about as casual as I carry these days." She said, as she headed over and picked up a plate of food. "Some of these dishes are hard to prepare, Varis, I'm impressed at your skill."

Taking a seat near Varis, she would wait patientally while the others arrived, attempting to get a feel for what everyone was feeling at the moment.

Re: The Lorelei - Dinner

Arriving just moments after Krysten, Joron entered the dining hall in an outfit different than he had been wearing moments ago. The clothing, while casual, was not without its own flair. The tight red trousers hugged his body like a second skin and the white long sleeved shirt and black vest possessed a fashionable cut. Overall, his clothing looked mildly expensive and appeared very much like what a delegate might wear when not discussing business. Beyond simple appearances, there was something about the room that caused his eyes to warm and his lips to smile. Perhaps it was the food, perhaps the company but with a courteous greeting, he listened to Varis' instructions then took a plate for himself and found an empty seat.

Re: The Lorelei - Dinner

Varis waits until everyone else has chosen a plate and taken their seat before she takes the last seat available. "In response to your comment, Kala, thank you. Due to the past history of my world, it is actually required that the nobility must learn to cook properly. If one hosts a formal and intimate dinner, the host is responsible for the welfare of the guests as it pertains to the food. At one point, poisoning one's rivals was very popular and a number of servants died for their lords' actions. The custom evolved only the host could be involved in food preparation and many other customs developed for the safety of the guests, such as those I am implementing today, where I must take the last plate and the last place available at table.

Catering companies on my world charge exorbitant prices because their employees need death benefit insurance in the event that a guest dies during the course of a meal. State dinners are multi-million credit affairs. I apologize. That might have been more information than you cared to know."

At his seat Narik showed an interest in the lecture given by Varis as she told the assembled group about the history of her people. It was not a subject close to the soldier’s heart but after the obvious effort their hostess had gone to in preparing the evenings entertainment he could do little less but act interested.

Politely he thanked her ”an intriguing custom well told. Where I was raised it is a custom to keep your hands above the table at all times during the meal. For no reason as untoward as assassination however. It’s just that if a hand is missing then people will assume you’re playing with the legs of your neighbour” he continued the small talk.

"Ahh. That is interesting." Kala said, as she listened to Varis' story. "My homeworld, has traditions, mostly the one where we throw parties for little or no reason. Everyone is always welcome, and no one ever goes home unsatasfied. I suppose that is why a lot of the different races of the galaxy make occasional trips there. Myself, I haven't been back in a few years, there's just too much to see in this universe. Though, hopefully I'll have some time to visit there in the future."

She would wait until Varis sat down before she started eating.

Varis takes her seat and takes up her utensil and has a bite of the food, as if to demonstrate that it has not been poisoned before she addresses the table. "I can not say that I particularly like the fact that my homeworld has such a gruesome political history. I would very much prefer if our customs were a little more pleasant, such as Narik or Kala have described on their own worlds. We do not have the luxury of choosing our family, though."

She steers the conversation in another direction by asking, "So, how do you like the Lorelei? I trust your accommodations are comfortable."

Krysten listened to the banter back and forth, and while she wasn't overly pleased with having to go through the present situation, there was finally a subject that she could discuss.

"So far, she seems like a good ship, though I'd prefer to see her doing what she does best, be it combat or stealth.  Accommodations are more than adequate, thank you for your consideration."

"Any ship can be outclassed, Krysten. What is the saying? 'There is always a bigger fish.' Still, she's a trim vessel and well armed and armored. If it comes to combat, she'll hold her own until she can escape or she's destroyed. You're right, though, that she's meant to be more stealthy. She is supposed to blend in and be capable of diplomatic and espionage missions."

She takes a bite of her nerf tartar and chews delicately before swallowing. "You might be interested to know that the supposed subterfuge of this mission is not, in fact, a scam. I am, in fact, an authorized delegate of KDC. It will help your mission considerably that there will be legitimate business being conducted while you work."

Re: The Lorelei - Dinner

The conversation of etiquette and customs took Joron back. Gazing to his plate, his mind and body fell back to old practices that he could not easily forget. [private to Varis Rei: Despite Varis' words, he's testing it for poisons, something all of House Mecetti do with their meals.] Even if it was as the Duchess said, it was hard, so very hard, to put a lifetime of practice away. It was not until long after he was satisfied with his subtle tests that he smiled, gathered a fork full and took his first scrumptious bite. The glance he gave Varis afterward was appreciative. The lady certainly knew how to cook.

"Where I come from we have-" Realizing he was about to say something he should not, the young noble bit the inside of his mouth then casually smiled, as if dismissing the thought all together. [private to Varis Rei: The Duchess may realize he might have said yachts or Victory-II class Star Destroyers. Though the comment may have been about food or customs.] "Indeed?" He said in reply to learning legitimate business was to be conducted. "And will Miss Jorn's or I's presence be needed at any of these official meetings?"

Re: The Lorelei - Dinner

Varis considers Joron's question for a moment. "You will need to be at the initial meeting, for the sake of form. Otherwise, it would be perfectly natural for me to send you on errands or fact-finding missions, which will be more than enough excuse to get you out of the extra meetings. I hate handling these negotiations myself, but there's nothing to be done for it. Jaerad preempted my choice of staff in favor of the two of you.

"In the normal course of things, I'd leave the actual negotiations to my assistants. Fortunately, these talks are just important enough that it will be all right if my counterpart and I forgo assistance."

[Private to Joron Sarrus: If Varis noticed what you were doing, she gives no sign of it. There is a similar lack of reaction to your comment trailing away.]

Aadun tried his best to appear interested in the conversation by making eye contact anytime anybody looked his way and smiling when it was appropriate.  For the most part though, he wanted to forget his home world, so he was quite pleased when the conversation changed away from local customs and onto the mission at hand.  "This was timed very well then.  The less secretive we have to be, the better."

Re: The Lorelei - Dinner

Joron's eyes met Varis' with a quiet look of understanding. It must have been a dour ordeal to have her choice of staff replaced with naught but people that would be absentees. However, for all the work that the lady might endure, she did not strike him as the helpless or incapable sort. After all, Varis was an authorized delegate for a reason. Through wit and charm, she would be able to manage. If things came down to it, all she need do is ask he or Kala for assistance. With a small nod, he parted his gaze from the redhead, looked to Aadun as he spoke, then took another bite of his meal.

Varis continues to eat slowly and delicately. It is as if eating is an art unto itself. Her arms and wrists move fluidly and gracefully, each movement seeming to be carefully choreographed. It is also obvious that she is not doing this intentionally, but rather she has had so much training in etiquette that she does this naturally. "If anyone has questions about your mission that you think haven't been satisfactorily answered, I am open to discussing them now.

For those of you who might be interested in sparring, I have a pair of training foils, and this observation deck has all of the necessities of a weapon salon. I'd like to get a decent workout in before bedtime. Perhaps in a couple of hours."

Thoughts of business and food had drifted, replaced by those anew that sifted. The souse-mustard dressing that once tickled a most spoiled palate became replaced by something more. Maintaining his own graceful etiquette, polished utensils worked whilst eyes never left his plate. "I would be delighted to," Joron replied with a most casual air.

"If you're looking for some practice before the mission, I'd be happy to accommodate you.  I've been feeling a little pent up since I was hired, and could use a bit of a release.  I'll be happy to meet you back here at whatever time you decide."

Narik tried the various foodstuffs on offer as the talk of manners developed into matters of the current mission. He nodded in understanding as Varis highlighted the function they would assume whilst on Ryloth.

At Varis’s prompting Narik asked a simple question ”we have talked of the familiar cultures we understand from our homeworlds but I have never travelled to Ryloth. Is there any protocol we should be prepared for when we begin our investigation and our meetings with Sinya and Brill? If we can impress them with good manner it may improve our negotiations”.

While she considers Narik's question, she chews thoughtfully. "I believe it is customary to give a small gift when you meet for the first time. The more you know about your host, the more specific the gift can be. A truly appreciated gift will raise your prestige with them, even as it tells them that you have done your homework where they are concerned. Traditionally, the host also offers a gift of some kind. Orn didn't make any recommendation for what his children would like, though."

Krysten was surprised at the memories the excellently-prepared food brought back.  It had been a long time since she had dredged them up, and she found she was still not ready to deal with them.

Putting them aside, she jumped back into the conversation.

"What exactly does KDC do?  And what do you do as a delegate for them?"

Varis regards Krysten for several quiet moments before responding. "KDC is a small starship design yard specializing in limited production runs of high quality vessels. Our component production is outsourced, but most components are then upgraded and modified in-house before we actually assemble the vessels in our own construction yard.

"As a delegate, I will be negotiating for these components, which are produced by Sienar Fleet Systems on Ryloth.

Narik thanked Varis for her insight ”it would be worthwhile to obtain a gift for both of them before we met. My only guess is to appeal to their sensibilities. If Brill is the more ambition he would appreciate a gift that will flatter him. Orn hinted that we should attempt to convince Sinya that our actions will be for the greater good and that she is more inclined to prefer her profession as a physician than take up politic we could appeal to her philanthropic nature by offering a gift to a worthy charity, maybe a medically natured one?”

Re: The Lorelei - Dinner

"This ship, the Lorelei is one of the finer products the KDC's engineers have masterminded," Joron spoke to Krysten matter-of-factly. "The banshee-class transport is quite the luxury. It is highly sought after where I come from." Though it appeared he had more to say on the matter of luxury yachts, Narik's words caused him pause.

In a way, gift giving was an art form. Where he came from, it was often the message behind the gift that mattered more than the gift itself. Why was it purchased and what did it meant or was supposed to mean were half the fun. A man could purchase a rival an exquisite ornate clock and instill wonderful meaning behind it...

"While a donation to such a charity in her name might prove adequate, if her clinic or hospital lacks certain equipment, procuring said item(s) for it would appear less of an empty jester and quite possibly show more sincerity on our behalf. After all, budgeting and politics are an...unfortunate part of the medical field. Helping a hospital where there was a lack of funding would make it look less like we're trying to buy her and more like we're just trying to help." Joron shrugged ever so little. "A gift that keeps on giving long after we're gone."

"Jaerad is loathe to invest too much in a venture which might prove fruitless. However, your portion of the mission has an allotted budget of twelve thousand credits. Keep in mind, that includes your own pay. Anything left over at the conclusion of this endeavor is yours to keep and split however you like. So, I suppose the answer is that you have twelve thousand credits. Don't spend it all in one place, though."

Re: The Lorelei - Dinner

Kala was a little suprised, especially about the amount of credits alloted for the mission. "Ahh, I suppose all docking fees, bribes, meals, and other such things are coming out of that pool." She said, as she nodded slightly. Still, even if they spent half of it, making a fair number of credits in a few days was nice. She had things she needed to buy, including information, which would get expensive.

But credits weren't her only motivation. Staying hidden was a large part of it, that, and becoming stronger.
