Lorelei - Weapon Salon

Two hours after dinner, Varis has invited everyone with an interest back up to the private upper deck to spar and workout. The same observation deck which was previously used for dinner has now been converted to a weapon salon. The table that was used for dinner is now stored upright flush with a wall, appearing to be nothing more than an ornamental piece. The chairs are store somewhere out of sight.

On the sideboard which was used to serve dinner, there is now draped a white cloth and atop that sits a pair of training foils and two visors. Against the far wall, there is another table with a pair of light pistols and an electronic target for ranged weapon practice.

Varis wears loose pants and a shirt, all in white. You find her stretching to loosen up as you enter.

OOC: You may post here immediately. I do not believe that anything said in the dinner thread will affect sparring practice.

Re: Lorelei - Weapon Salon

Krysten is one of the first to arrive, wearing a simple outfit of a one piece shirt and pants that came to just above her ankles.  Both were a simple, rough fabric that would remind anyone of a dry desert sand.  The shirt had a small cut down the front to prevent chafing against the neck and was secured from moving around too much by a dark blue sash wrapped around her waist.

Her eyes take in the training weapons and its impossible for her to keep a small smirk from showing on her lips for a fraction of second before she remembers that some cultures do not believe in full-contact sparring.

She gives Varis a nod of greeting and waits for finish stretching.

Re: Lorelei - Weapon Salon

Varis greets Krysten while she stretches. "You're the first to arrive, so that means you and I can have the first bout while we wait on the others.""

She stands up, then, and continues to stretch a bit more. "Do you have a preference for weapons? Would you like to duel with the foils, or perhaps you would like to shoot pistols for points?"

She finishes her stretching and walks over to Krysten. "I admit, it isn't my forte, but I do know a little of the Echani hand-to-hand style of martial arts. A lady of rank has to be able to defend herself so that her bodyguards can concentrate on capturing any assassins, rather than shielding her with their bodies."

"You actually don't have the weapons I prefer for weapons training, though I will take you up on your offer of a little hand-to-hand.  I can't say I know much, if anything about the Echani fighting style, but I'm comfortable matching Mando'a against anything you'd like.  After that, we can move on to any weapons you prefer."

She was standing at an easy position, weight equally distributed on the balls of her feet and arms hanging loosely by her side.

Varis walks out to the middle of the mats that have been placed in the salon. "I know how to fall, but just in case, it's always nice to ensure there are no unnecessary injuries, don't you think?"

She bows to Krysten and assumes a stance, her body profile to Krysten, her front hand guarding her face. "Whenever you're ready, Mandalorian," she says with a grin.

Re: Lorelei - Weapon Salon

After dinner Narik was intrigued to see his companions in action. So he returned to Varis’s chambers. He glanced to the various training weapons. A soldier Narik had been drilled in most weapons but the foils were something he had no ever tried. He saw it was a pastime for dilettantes and nobles not an effective weapon to be used in combat, he wondered if he would be surprised.

Of more interest was the sight of Krysten and Varis sizing each other up ready for unarmed combat. It was a pursuit that Narik’s training had made him well prepared for. He was still wearing his customary grey robes Narik but at the sight of the women who were dressed in much less he shrugged his shoulder to let his robes slid down his back. Carefully he folded them and placed them neatly on the floor. Beneath his robes Narik’s clothes were close-fitting shirt and pants of a darker grey.

Krysten moved closer to Varis, looking much as if she was simply walking.  Once she was in range, however, one of her hands lashed out with a surprising speed and precision towards Varis' face.

Varis makes no additional move to defend herself as Krysten walks closer. When Krysten lashes out however, Varis's guard hand is just suddenly there, between the strike and her own face. She quickly counters the attack with her backhand, which shoots forward into a heel strike against Krysten's chin.

"That was a great match.  We can keep going if you like, I'd love to get a rematch; or you can spar with Narik if you like."

Kala had excused herself after dinner, since fighting in that dress she wore probably wouldn't be the greatest idea. Once the exercise was about to begin, she emerged into the room in a plain white shirt, and dark pants. She nodded to Krysten, Varis, and Narik as she entered, before heading over and looking at the foils.

"Hmm. It's been a while since I actually fenced..." She said, as she smiled and picked up one and held the weapon in her hand, gauging the weight, and taking a few practice swings.

"Ah, Kala, you are just in time to give me a break! You should spar with Narik, I think. Perhaps the two of you can feel each other out through combat, hmm?"

Now that there is a partner for Narik to spar with besides herself, Varis walks over to a cabinet and pulls out some bottles of room temperature water. She tosses one to Krysten. "Not that you need it, but I'm going to sit down for just a moment. A real sparring match can take it out of you if you aren't careful." She places several other bottles on top of the cabinet before taking one for herself.

OOC: We're running this like a combat, so you'll need to roll and post initiative in private and then roll to hit and stun damage. We'll do first to three points wins the bout. Since you know the rules, there's no need for me to referee at this point. You post your move, roll your to hit and damage, and then the other player determines if you hit. The foils do 1d6 points of stun damage. For pistols, let's do best of 10 shots wins the match.

"Oh, you fence?" A melodious voice called out not far from Kala's position. There, standing at the threshold of the room was Joron. The time for eating and casual wear had past and now the young dilettante was wearing what appeared to be a two piece silk ensemble consisting of a sleeveless black top, matching trousers and a gold sash at the waist whilst his feet adorned comfortable black shoes. It was dissimilar to typical fencing wear but nevertheless offered freedom of movement.

Entering the room, the young lord gave each occupant a curious glance, the type a man might give a potential rival. It was often said that the true face of a Mandalorian was their armor and to see Krysten without any of it brought about an inquisitive glance. Making his way to the two female combatants, he looked to Varis and then to the Mandalorian. It was obvious to him that the two had just sparred. "How was your match?" He asked, taking care to call neither a winner nor a loser.

The bout versus Krysten and Varis was educational as well as amusing. Both were good fighters and Varis was a lot more than a trophy of Jaerad’s. A contest of unarmed combat would have favoured Narik best but he accepted Kala’s offer to attempt a duel. Narik was keen to size the Zeltron up and would use any opportunity to get closer to her.

Narik nodded to Kala ”if you don’t mind a contest with a novice I’m willing. Neither the Republic or Imperial Academy include fencing in their basic training” he explained as he picked up a visor and put it on. He picked up a foil weighted it in his hands whilst with the other he gestured to the centre of the room where they could begin.

"Oh?" Joron smirked. "I'll keep that in mind."

With a sidelong glance at the redhead, he studied his would-be rival for a moment. If her skills were as admirable as Krysten led him to believe, she could prove a most worthy opponent. Had he only arrived moments ago, he might have studied their technique, learned from it and used it later. However, much like the Mandalorian, he was going to have to take it as it came.

Looking between Kala and Narik, Joron thought of the possibilities. With one participant a novice and the other skilled with a blade, the outcome seemed one sided from a certain point of view. However, that advantage did not ensure things would be one sided for the Zeltron. "Hmm, what do you think?" He asked the Mandalorian with a small perk of his brow.

The salon is large enough for the duel going on in the center, as well as having room along the sides for seating. In addition to that, there's a clear lane for target practice with the pistols as well in the event that someone wishes to do that while a sparring match is in practice.

Varis takes a seat next to Aadun and sips her water. She doesn't say anything, though.

He stands up and strolls over to have a look.  He picks one of them up and kind of holds it in his hand to get a feel for the weight.  He aims the pistol at the target, but doesn't fire.  After a few moments, he sets it back down where he picks it up and says, "If anybody is interested in trying to beat me, I wouldn't mind playing.  We can wait until after Kala and Narik spar, of course."

Narik had his mind focused on his opponent when Krysten spoke. He barely heard the words and failed to acknowledge them. There would always be time to spar with Mandalorian later if she wanted an attempt to restore her honour after the defeat at the hands of Varis Rei.

He faced the Zeltron; he analyzed her body and stance. Narik knew people who would crave the attention of any hedonistic Zeltron in the pursuit of pleasure and others that avoided them as dangerously persuasive not wishing to be made a fool of. Narik was not immediately interested in the former and hoped he would not become the later.

As soon as the pair had nodded and touched swords Narik was on the attack. Knowing his skill with the foil was minimal he pushed his attack hoping to force his opponent to err or to get a lucky strike.

Despite Narik initial strategy to keep on the attack his opponent’s experience of sword-fighting had him on the run. The soldiers own attacks were weak and ill planned, his defence relying on his speed made little use of the foil in his own hand. Kala’s lunge penetrated his failing guard to score a hit squarely on Narik chest.

The sudden move had Narik back pedaling as he stretched to make a counter attack. He over stretched himself and the tip of his blade was short of striking the Zeltron’s body. He seemed to be losing.

When Narik lifted his protective visor he worn a grin to hide his disappointment, the then soldier lowered his blade ”thanks for the lesson; sorry I wasn’t much of challenge” he apologised as he returned the foil to the sideboard.

It might have been only a courtesy but Narik appreciated Kala’s good grace in offering him an excuse for his poor performance. And it had been good to get some exercise ”a good workout but I wouldn’t want to rely on a weapon like that in a fight give me a blaster any day” he joked off his failure in an easy manner with Kala. He hadn’t expected the Zeltron to be as skilled in sword-fighting, he wondered if she hid any other surprises.

Aadun smiles.  "Sounds good," he replies to Varis' first question and then says, "I'd like to watch this match, but afterwards I am interested in trying out the pistols."  He watches as Krysten and Joron are about to take the floor.  He was quite interested in this fight, but was hiding his curiosity.  He knew that Krysten would probably be quite good, but he had been wondering about Joron's skills for a while.

Kala replied, as she took a seat, and waited for the next match to begin. "You should see the masters of swords on my planet. They wear next to nothing, and wield two blades... Joron shot Krysten a wry smile smile in response as he followed her toward the dueling circle. He hadn't come here to face the Mandalorian but he didn't seem the sort to back down from a challenge despite its difficulty. "I profess to, hmm, moderate skill with a blade. Everything else is..." He wove his hand dismissively. If he was indeed a dilettante, he probably tried his hands at a number of different things in the past. The question was what, if anything, he stuck with. "Have you a preference for this contest?" Though he spoke those words innocent and true, his eyes beamed with unveiled mischief.

It was official, fancy pants was up to something.

"Oh but I didn't see last time," Joron reminded her. "I was hoping for something more interesting," he began, as if to shift the warrior's mindset elsewhere. Maybe he had something on his mind? "But I suppose it cannot be helped..." Looking to Narik, he gave the man a rather helpless shrug. It seemed it was his turn to fight in a match he had little to no skill in. Defeating the dala would certainly be tough. However, that did not preclude the fact he would not learn from the encounter.

An act, a hit, a promise at redemption, many things were now involved in this session between man and woman but none more important than the last. Silenced withered, replaced by the sounds of joints cracking and popping as the well-dressed noble stretched for the eventful conflict. Once, twice, three times he forced his body to go limber. Despite the sounds, the motions were fluent, graceful and practiced. When he finished, Joron dropped down low in what appeared to be a defensive stance and narrowed his eyes at the lady. He didn't come at her, oh no...that pleasure was reserved for her.

Kala’s sentiments were a sensible attitude and one Narik agreed with. As part of his training he been taught to defend himself even when unarmed and how to make the best of what he had”always good to have a back-up” he nodded a little distracted by the thought of how it would be to fight against Kala if she was wearing next to nothing like she suggested the natives of her home did.

He was dragged from further thoughts of Kala as Joron caught his eye. Narik responded with a nod and mouthed a silent good luck to the noble as he prepared himself.

Joron managed to slip a punch past her guard, forcing Krysten to twist at the waist to turn it into a grazing blow.  The sudden change in momentum was enough to shift her next attack so that it whiffed completely.  She backed off, keeping her guard up while she considered her next attack.  It was two points to each of them, and she was bound and determined not to lose this match.

Granted, it was great fun either way, but it didn't say much for the most heavily armored of the bodyguards if she couldn't take on one of their diplomats in a little hand to hand.

Unseen by the naked eye, Joron's visor veiled a poisonous grin. The taunts, like music, invigorated his dueling spirit. Varis knew of his weapon of choice, or rather, she had heard Jaerad mention it. He was a duelist through and through and now...now it was time to see if those years of training were worth the effort.

"Well, I am a fast learner," he replied, taking her amused words stride. En garde!"

Different, the way he moved with a sword was similar yet different. Prideful, graceful, each movement was an act drawn to capture and deceive. His feet were swift, his weapon intrepid, and the body across from them its mark. The speed in which he advanced was surreal. With a flourish and thrust of his arm, the young lord aimed directly for one of the lady's vital points.

Re: Lorelei - Weapon Salon

A whoosh of air escapes Varis's lips as Joron's lunge forces it from her lungs. A wicked smile forms in response. "Oh, a hit! How droll. A good beginning, but the beginning of the end. One lucky strike doesn't win the match!" she says with a cruel laugh.

Her first thrust is surgically precise, a nasty blow to Joron's own chest, above his heart.

Re: Lorelei - Weapon Salon

Tickled by her cruelty, Joron replied with the only words that came to mind. "Call it whatever makes you feel better, it changes nothing."

Indeed it did not. A blow was a blow and be it skill or luck, that wouldn't change the slight against Varis' pride, nor the damage dealt. With Krysten, he had started on the defensive to gauge the way she fought and moved. But for the Duchess, he had changed his tactics she wouldn't know what to expect. Thus far, his aggression had paid off...but would it continue to?

In a flash of precision, the wicked lady's foil penetrated Joron's guard and stung his chest in a similar manner than he had just struck her. Oh she was good, very, very good and it was only when the wicked lady moved that he truly learned what he was up against. This wasn't going to be a walk in the park. Narrowing his eyes, he went on the offensive a second time, moving to strike her in the vital organs yet again. This time...her kidney.

Re: Lorelei - Weapon Salon

Varis neatly dances out of the way of Joron's strike. Her graceful movements are much more reminiscent of ballet than mere swordplay. With her free hand, she twitches her finger back and forth, "No, no, no. You naughty boy. Another hit shan't be so easy as the first. You'll have to be satisfied with first blood."

Her eyes flashing with glee, she darts in again, lightning quick, a slice across across Joron's belly which, with a real blade, would likely slit him open if it hit.

Re: Lorelei - Weapon Salon

"Guess not," he replied matter-of-factly to the Duchess as he watched her gracefully maneuver around his blow. "Oh I am. First blood is always the sweetest."

Baited and unabated, what started off as a match in his favor quickly spirals out of his control. Try as he might to land a second blow, his attacks do little good. Worn, he had been worn down by the combined combat of Krysten and Varis without enough rest. But this excuse, he did not use or say. It was through sheer will and determination that he continued on. The slice to his stomach was quick and caused his teeth to clench at the sudden pain. It was the same area, the same area the Mandalorian punished with multiple blows. Instinctively, his arm thrust a counter but that counter had been blinded by that flash of pain. He'd get her... he didn't know when...but he'd get her...

Varis shoots back a mockingly saccharine grin. "First blood is sweetest, but the victor has the most satisfaction."

She lunges again, this time towards Joron's shoulder, intending to offer him an unpleasant bruise and additional reminder of their encounter.

[Private to Joron Sarrus:
Don't worry about the hit points. The damage rolls are really just to be rolling. It would be much more reasonable, since it's 3 points to win, to say each hit did 1 point of damage.

Re: Lorelei - Weapon Salon

All time seemed to slow as Varis' blade thrust for his shoulder. A bruise, a slight, a manner of offense to his ego, that was what she wished to leave him. To harry and humble him like a civil servant. But Joron was not compliant with the lady's arrogance, nor was he compliant with going down so early. With a swift movement of his arm, he blocked the incoming attack.

"You've not won yet," he snarled, feeling his anger boil from within, then aimed his own blade for the lady.

Varis laughs in response to Joron's snarl. "Oh, I think that one might have hurt," she quips as she spins out of the path of his blade, "if you'd managed another lucky thrust.

"Do I detect a hint of anger, Joron?"
she taunts. Obviously, Varis's fighting style is as much mental as physical, with the wry comments and barbs designed to throw her opponent off balance.

She strikes at Joron's sword arm this time.

"Are you kidding me?" Joron asks, his voice full of mock pain. "I've been in pain since I ate that slop you prepared for dinner! Just whom taught you to cook, anyway?"

"Oh you'd be angry too if you ate something like that and you got poked in the stomach," Like Varis, his dueling style used wits and tongue as much as it did feints and grace. However, unlike the Duchess, thus far, she'd been coming out on top.

Seeing through her attack, Joron parried her incoming blow then stepped through her guard to capture his second point of the match. "Guess it's my lucky day, eh?"

Or, at least Joron thought he was going to capture his second point. At the last instant, with prescient grace, Varis avoids the blow which Joron was certain should have hit.

"Oh, so close. You know what they say, though: close only counts with proton torpedoes and concussion grenades," she jests. "Better luck next time.

"Your satire is as poor as your aim, Joron."

The blow connects, stopping whatever quip Joron might have said in reply. Stunned and defeated, his counter, too, stops before it begins. It took the redhead quite some time but she did it, she finally did it...she bested him with a sword. Taking a step back, he removes the visor from his head then shakes his hair loose.

"Looks like I'm done," he said, shrugging off the defeat like he didn't care. Though, perhaps under that nonchalant shell, he did. "I'll meet you later about those lessons, you can do all the tongue wagging then."

Varis's arrogant swagger and attitude vanish beneath a polite facade as soon as Joron concedes the bout. "Well fought, Joron. That was admirably done. With a little more practice in the real world under your belt, you'll have no trouble besting me, I think."

She runs the spot that Joron hit with her fingertips. "I thought perhaps you did have me, given that first hit. Very well done. It's a good thing I'm not planning on wearing anything low cut for a few days, for I'll have a bruise there that will be most unseemly. Ah well, that's what bacta is for, yes?" she asks with a smile.

Joron gave a modest shrug of his shoulders. Maybe if he stopped wasting his time on petty bets with his peers and racing around the galaxy, his skill with a blade would bloom into something far more admirable. "Maybe, but with the way you move, I think even then I'll have trouble landing a blow," he admitted after careful consideration of her graceful footwork.

A visage of innocence appeared on the noble's young face as Varis ran her fingers where he first attacked. "Yielding the initiative worked for and against you. It allowed me to show you my skill but," he gestured towards the redhead's chest. It was to her own body's peril. "Once you went on the defensive," he just shook his head. "Where did you learn to fence to fence like that?"

She stretches a bit as she turns her attention to Krysten and Aadun, working out the tension in her chest. Better to endure a little discomfort now than real soreness later.

"As for my training, the daughter of a Duke has the best instructors money and connections can buy. My fencing master was probably the best duelist in the galaxy during his heyday.
