Mission to Ryloth Part I - Day 2

Those who set alarms find them going off exactly on time. Those who don't will wake up whenever they feel rested, as the individual rooms are heavily soundproofed so that not even the sound of a loud holodrama on the vidscreen could awaken them.

The first to walk out of their room finds Varis, eating breakfast, watching the local news. Since she doesn't have any negotiations planned for today, she's dressed in casual clothing.

Re: Mission to Ryloth Part I - Day 2

Aadun opened his eyes and sleepily turned to glare at his alarm.  He sat up and stared off into space several minutes and then he turned the alarm off.  He stands up and stares longingly at his bed.  'You can sleep in after the mission,' he thinks to himself and then walks over to his bag.  The bag was full and most of its contents wound up strewn across the bed before a proper outfit was selected.

All he really needed to do was his normal grooming in order to make himself look presentable and then he stepped out of his room.  It wasn't too surprising that Varis was already up since she seemed to really take her jobs seriously.  "Sleep well?" he asks and he finds a good spot to sit.

"Yes, I did. And you?" she asks more out of politeness than actual interest as she appears to be very absorbed by the news.

"It seems that they've announced a 'quarantine' of Kala'uun for health concerns to the general population of Ryloth. They're claiming they have a possible outbreak of Plyridian Fever, the incubation time of which is four weeks, so Kala'uun has to be quarantined for the next four weeks and they're tracking all freighters which have recently departed as a 'safety precaution.' Someone really wants a chance to work the city over thoroughly."

"Yes," he responds, but doesn't comment further.  He turns his attention also to the news and listens as Varis explains the situation at hand.  He groans inwardly and stands back up.  "What?  That is very troublesome," he says through gritted teeth, but he shuts his eyes and breaths deep.  After a few moments, he seemed to calm himself and it was hard to tell that he had ever began to get angry in the first place.  "This will affect our escape plans."

Varis nods in agreement. "Yes, it will. It also affects negotiations. If the Imperials are planning on staying a month, because they're searching, we won't be negotiating anything or leaving in two weeks as planned. We'll have to work out an alternative escape plan. This mission... it is going extremely wrong disturbingly quickly."

Aadun paces back and forth a few times as if walking would help his mind process the information better.  "We'll just have to make do.  The timeline is greatly extended and if we cause too much trouble too early then we'll have to deal with the consequences directly," he comments, thinking about the mission first.  "Is it a fair guess to assume that the Imperials are probably behind this?"

"I imagine this is the Imperials, yes. As a bit of a correction, though, I think the time line has been shortened, not extended. If they're implementing a serious search, and they think it will take a month, they are bound to check out every option. The longer we're here, the more danger we are in from them.

I don't know about you, but I've no desire to be the subject of an Imperial Inquisitor's speculation or investigation."

'Varis has a point...' Aadun thought to himself as he nods his head.  He didn't think he was outlawed anywhere, but he had done questionable things and it really wouldn't surprise him if the Imperials could dig up something.  He continued to pace a bit, unconsciously, but soon he sits back down in his chair.  "As soon as everybody is ready we need to get going.  I don't think I was paid enough to have to deal with that," he says and his lips curled up into his usual grin.

Krysten stepped out of her 'fresher in her own quarters about the time Aadun got up and began getting dressed.  She had already been up for close to an hour, but she had been working out and was in dire need of a sonic shower.

She stepped into the main room just as Aadun offered to go wake folks up with her helmet under one arm.  She set the helmet on a counter top before beginning to load a plate with foods like nerf bacon, Nubian eggs, hash browns and shaak sausage from the selection room service had delivered.

As she sat down on a stool with her helmet in easy reach, she started digging into the plate in what many would consider a "military" fashion.  She was polite about it, but everything simply disappeared into her petite form.  When she was done, she turned to Varis.

"I had the news on in my quarters.  I've never heard of this plague, but it sounds like we need to get our mission done in a hurry.  Are we going after the brother?  Or are we going to try and talk to the sister?"

Kala had spent a bit of the morning in meditation in her room. Exercises to clear her mind, and help her relax. Soon, she was ready to meet the day. She headed for the refresher, and one out, dressed in some casual clothing. She turned on the local news feed, and frowned.

She exited her room, and came down to the main room. She saw Aadun and Varis there. "Hello there. So, the imperials are soon to be knocking on doors, to make sure we don't have this plague. Is there a smuggling compartment on the ship we could hide things in that we do not wish to be caught with?" She said, as she helped herself to some breakfast.

"It's fine." Kala replied. Varis would either search her bag, or she would not. She perhaps had to trust her a little, or else spend her days and nights lying awake, wondering if anyone in the group was going to betray her.

"I would recommend we get a copy of the latest Imperial laws, so we know what we can and cannot carry, to reduce us being hassled everywhere we go." She suggested, as she smiled to the others.

Aadun stood up and stifled a yawn.  Now that more people were beginning to show up, he walked over and got a small breakfast for himself while he listened to the conversation between Kala and Varis.  'Now, what could she be hiding,' he wondered to himself more due to curiosity than anything else.  He certainly hadn't come clean with all of his own secrets, so it wasn't really surprising that nobody else had either.

Eventually, he turned his attention away from Kala and grinned over at Varis.  "Good advice."

Suddenly, the sound of a door hissed open and through it stepped a familiar visage. With neither a smile nor disdain for the glorious time of day, Joron Sarrus waltzed toward the scent of bountiful nourishment without the usual swagger in his step. Today he had dressed casually, or at least what was causal for him. The ensemble was stylish yet utilitarian. Unlike the robe, which was bent more on impressing peerage and upholding social graces, the slacks, long sleeved shirt and vest he adorned offered more freedom of movement. And when anything could go wrong, that freedom of movement was nothing to scoff at.

"Good morning," the noble said, his voice carrying a vestige of drowsiness not uncommon to those that weren't morning persons. "What are we-" Looking from the plates of others to the holovid display, the news broadcast ushered in a terrible silence. Plague. Quarantine. Four weeks!?

It was a slap in the face, like the start of one terrible event that could only lead to another. For now, he stared at the screen, watching the news cast over and over again. Perhaps...he was in denial or perhaps, it hadn't sunk in. But maybe, just maybe, the noteworthy schemer was trying to discern a way to use it to their advantage.

As the others either enjoyed their breakfast or shared the day’s news Narik looking relaxed entered the dining area. He worn light weight and pale grey clothes, the loose garments were designed to be worn under his usual robes which he evidently decided not to wear for breakfast.

The soldier frowned at the news but made sure to smile at his companions as he served himself a bowl of cereal, seated he poured a cup blue milk before he dug in. Between mouthfuls he addressed some of their concerns ”I’d say we stick together, purchase a gift for Brill and then meet with him” he shrugged his shoulders at the mention of contraband ”my weapons are licensed and my cover here as head of security offers me plenty of reason to remain armed. I’d hope we could complete the mission without getting into a blaster fight however”.

"Wonder if they actually released the fever on the city," Joron murmured as he finally took a seat. Knowing what he knew of Imperial tactics, it went without saying that if cases of it started popping up, they had all the more reason to stay and quarantine people. However, even if they had not, it gave the Inquisitor the perfect excuse to take anyone he saw fit. Were it not for the disease's four week incubation period and their desire to get off the rock as soon as possible, it may have been something to use...

After Narik made his suggestion, the dark haired noble nodded. "Indeed. Did you have anything in mind for a gift?"

Joron frowned. "The art of gift giving comes from knowing a person, preferably knowing more about them than they of you. For twi'leks, this custom is sign of friendship. Something so simple as a bottle of wine could suffice for an enterprising young businessman and allow us something to toast with during the advent of any...arrangements." Allowing himself due pause, the noble pursed his lips when a new thought came to mind. "If he has any ire toward the Distombe Clan, I would see one of their women enslaved, have her name changed to..." he quickly spoke a word in Ryl. "Then present her to Brill. Though...I somehow feel his father would appreciate the gesture far more."

For those fluent in the language, they would quickly realize the word meant gift.

"So, the plans are to give him an expensive bottle, or a slave woman?" Kala said, as she shook her head a little. "Really, kidnapping someone of that clan would be counter-productive anyway. Think about it, if we kidnap her today to present her to Brill, the other clan members may be alerted that something is going on, and tighten their security."

She shook her head. "With the Quarentine, things are about to get scarce around here. If we have something that Brill could sell for an inflated price during the shortage, I think that would be a good gift for him as a businessman."

Please keep in mind that the only person among us that has spoken of kidnapping is Kaiten," So saying, he looked to the absent bodyguard's room then shrugged his shoulders. "There are far more subtle ways to acquire a person."

The soldier offered a clear plan of action ”we should set up the meeting and obtain the gift. Joron and Kala as aides to the negotiator could arrange the appointment for later today whilst Aadun checks where Brill shops and what he purchased we should then be able find a suitable gift in from within the stores of the Lorelei.

"That would be you," Joron replied to Kaiten with a smile that could only be replied as pleasant. "You were the one that suggested we kidnap someone last night, now weren't you? I've not said a thing about kidnapping anybody."

Still smiling, he turned to Kala. "You really needn't protest; I've already stated that such a gift would make a better fit for Lord Orn rather than Brill, meaning I did not find it appropriate given our present time constraints and...obstructions. However, those aside, it was nevertheless an answer to Master Narik's question. Which was the point to the answer. Some of you may not agree with the culture here, but..." he shrugged. "That's just the way things are."

Though his ideas were often devious, Joron had no intention of making their mission harder or bringing the wrath of the Empire down on them. Still, he was willing to do what it took to succeed and when one worked for a Crime Lord the good and moral scarcely coincided with what someone had to do.

"Unless any of you have an alternative, or a gift that might coincide with Miss Jorn's plan, I agree with Narik's proposal."

Sure, having a member of a rival family as a slave would be nice, but credits for a businessman are usually what he covets. "I'm afraid murder does not garner the desired result," Joron frowned. "Master Kaiten's feelings aside, it only achieves our goal temporarily. To truly remove the Distombe's from their seat of power, shame must be brought to their clan, not simple death. As you can clearly see, when shame is not a factor, the clan that once ruled swiftly moves to retake control. Much as Lord Orn has done."

"If we merely murder a member of the Distombe clan, they will simply rally the support of others and plot to retake Kala'uun. Often times, such acts can bloom to civil war, an act I feel may be blamed on us and our employer should it happen. However, if we shame the clan and remove them from power, they will lose whatever support they have and be unable to reclaim the city. Thus why I previously suggested framing them for stolen artifacts."

"Your idea for a gift is a fine one," Joron agreed. "Though a time consuming one and I think we'd all agree that to leave this planet as quickly as possible is desired. Unless," He paused, taking a moment to look at the view screen. "One of his business competitors just happens to be among the Distombe Clan. Should one of his rivals be caught with performing illegal deeds...and this attention is brought to the attention of those above..." He trailed off, allowing the idea to rest in the minds of others.

"Now, as Narik proposed, we may just go to Brill with a bottle of wine and discuss this all with him. That is, unless Aadun can discover whether or not the above theory holds an essence of truth. Thoughts?"

He didn’t get a chance to question Aadun so to eliminate any chance for error Narik retrieved his own datapad from his room and returned to the dining room with it under his arm.

Seated back at the table he switched the computer on and began his own checks on Brill. Searching for any details on the Twi’lek, his habits and his likes.

For a brief moment, Kala thought she saw the tiniest bit of worry in Joron's eyes as he looked at her. Though, that could be the speck of dust he might have in his eye.

This brill sounded like most of the criminal element that seemed to thrive in the dark parts of the galaxy. Some who she had encountered before, she just had to keep her guard up.

Varis returns a few minutes later, sans bag, holding a small wooden crate. It looks very rustic, considering the technology available in the galaxy, but perhaps that just means it is that much more valuable.

"Be gentle with this. Don't jostle it," she says, handing the crate to Joron.

Krysten took the time that Aadun was in his room searching to return to her room as well, and returned with her small armory of a blaster carbine slung over her shoulder within easy reach, her two heavy blaster pistols riding low on her thigh armor and her wrist rocket launcher prominent on her right wrist.  On her left was a datapad modified to be used with a single hand while her bandolier bristled with ammunition for her wrist launcher and ammunition packs for her blasters.  All in all, despite her almost petite frame, she provided a very attention-grabbing visual.  Something that would grab everyone's attention, and leave little room in someone's mind for the other, less-spectacular members of the group.

Kala entered the penthouse, and gave a little sigh. They would have to inform Varis of what happened in the meeting, and she would no doubt be a little unhappy about what had unfolded. They would also have to use the Ship's communication system to go and inform Orn.

So, she headed for Varis' room, and knocked on the door, hoping she would be in.

Kala sighed. The others would be joining her shortly, or should be. Though, there was still enough time to inform Orn of the situation. The ship would have a better comminications suite, and probably less chance of getting intercepted and decoded, depending on what sort of gear the imperials were using. Not that they would care, per se.

So, Kala began to make her way to the hangar.

Narik after his brief private meeting with Kala made his way to the group’s communal living area whilst the Zeltron returned to the Lorelei to get a message to Orn. The soldier found a seat and unceremoniously swung his booted feet up to rest his heels on the table. He still hadn’t really calmed down after the confrontation with Brill but made a show that he was relaxed. Soon they would be doing it all over again with Sinya.

When the others joined him he smiled and asked the group about Orn’s daughter ”what gift shall we take Sinya?”.

"Uncertain," Joron stated with a small shrug of his shoulders. "In the portrait she seemed most lascivious with her... friend. More wine could do the trick, but..." He trailed off. Sinya certainly did not carry the visage he first imagined when Lord Orn told them she was a doctor. Maybe she had morals, or maybe it was simply the most lucrative career outside of politics she could muster? Her father believed her to be an innocent...

But fathers were often mistaken about their daughters.

"A word of advice, Master Narik. Never appeal to a businessman's, especially a twi'lek businessman's, sense of honor or decency." The noble grinned as he reclined in one of the chairs. "You'll get about the same response out of one as you would our employer...if not worse." Right now, they could only be thankful Aadun had assuaged the eldest son; if he hadn't...

"It would be most beneficial to us." Joron nodded to the Zabrak. "Personally, I'm interested in seeing just what kind of doctor she is... and her record."

Narik remained cool as the Zabrak tried to berate him. There was no recognised chain of command expect Jaerad. Perhaps Varis had some element of control but each of them could act freely. Narik could say what he liked to who he liked, same as Aadun and Joron were doing now. The soldier shrugged ”Brill don’t need to like us we ain’t employed by him, let him fret. He’s been warned that we’re going to act, if he don’t make his move then one of his brothers or even his sister will if they're ambitious enough” he kept his feet on the table and smiled at his companions.

It would be good to get some intelligence on Sinya ”go ahead find out what you can about Sinya before we head over to see her” Narik nodded ”after that we’ll have committed ourselves to bringing down the Distombe clan. We’ll be making real enemies then, you shouldn’t be afraid of upsetting folk when you’ve been sent here to kill’em”.

The team’s progress was difficult to assess. "It takes parents with specific interests to truly know everything about their children," Joron shrugged nonchalantly. "Aadun, I think it may prove most beneficial if you could dig up any filth on Brill that you can."

Though, could the Zabrak perform such a feat? Oh, it was true that he managed to dig up information on the siblings once before but the brash young noble could not help but ponder whether or not that was the extent to the knowledge available or Ogden's skill. Beneath a shroud of indifference, a modicum of the well-dressed human hoped that the slicer could pull through for them. But it was best not to rest upon hope alone...

"Though, Miss Jorn, I believe you are mistaken. I'm under the impression she very much wishes to be part of the council. You heard the way she spoke of her good intentions. It is the futility of sharing that power with her brothers that vexes her." Suddenly he turned to Narik. "No assassinations. That should be a last resort. After meeting her, I very much doubt she will agree to do anything if a Distombe suddenly dies of anything short of ... natural causes."

Again, his mind wandered to the propaganda each of them witnessed on the news. Were Sinya the cooperative sort, they might have procured a sample to use, but no... they were left to their own devices.

"For now, I must work on drafting an... agreement between the good Doctor and her kin, one to ensure their cooperation on the council. Varis? If I could borrow your ear for a moment...? Aadun, if you find anything of note, perhaps on either party, do let me know."

If there was nothing further, Joron sauntered for his room.

A moment of peace without restraints was always valued by Narik. As a soldier’s life could be ended quickly so it was worth taking a moment to enjoy the slower times. His lips curled into a wry smile as he turned to Aadun ”if we could persuade him to join his sister for its own benefit it would be preferable to forcing him with blackmail. Maybe you could investigate what motivates him and how his business could prosper if he was allied with Sinya. A willing ally will be easier to work with than if we twist his arm. If we force him when the pressures off he’s likely to bite ours hands off”.

With a shrug ”I’ll leave the holonet to you” he commented, aware that his own abilities were barely amateur. When everyone was busy the soldier left Aadun and the others to their tasks. Maybe he could get some information of the streets. He had rested long enough; he went to knock on Krysten’s door ”do you want go see what we can dig up on the street?” he asked her.

Men like him care for very little and their income is one of them. His illegal shipping could act as the proper leverage we need. Even without drawing the Empire into this, we need only offer his rivals that information. Or worse, reinforce the fact Sinya knows of said dealings and that we cannot stop her from using said knowledge against him should he not cooperate. But, we can use that as a last resort, should he not see the, how you say, initial profit of such a merger."
