Re: OOC

Koigan, son of Goignus, here.  Fighter/Cleric dwarf type.  Be prepared, for he really likes flails and shields and dipping his beard in the blood of defeated enemies!

Under the crusty exterior, he's really made of the same flint found in the hills where he's from!

Enarean Starblade, scion of the Azure Eye clan, bids you greetings.  I am a humble swordsmith who perhaps has a few magical tricks up his sleeves.

Cultural Context

While I'm taking the time to define classes and clan structure, for this game, it is more important as a way of reflecting possible character personal attitudes toward others.  These attitudes are not written in stone though.  Perhaps, they even set you apart.  It is one consideration as you write your back stories though.

Crafting your start.  I will open that thread for posting once everyone is ready.

This weekend or early next week at latest is what I'm targeting.

How to think about clans

Clans are families of families with largely heriditary rights to segments of commerce.  If nothing else, each establishes a network of support.  They also establish and protect social boundaries as well as providing guidance on where people fit into standard Yeomanry society.  Think of it as professional tendencies as opposed to rigid limitations.  As an example, a potter clan is likely to produce mostly potters and are very proud when one of theirs makes it big as a mage or clerric ... unless that person leaves to join another clan.

As a member of such a clan, that individual would not be allowed to open a wine retailer, which is the province of other clans.

Re: How to think about clans

As a dwarf, I would think that Koigan would be outside of the normal human clan schema, but that the basics would apply to his dwarf clan with respect to other dwarves and perhaps any of the clans with whom the dwarves directly compete (such as the Smith Clan, Stonecutters, Miners, Masons, etc.)... although the Fortress-Cave Clan (Festungshohle) is very, very insular for a hill dwarf clan, so direct competition may or may not apply.

Re: How to think about clans

Enarean's player is stretched too thin and asked to bow out.  Five players certainly works and I'll be fielding an NPC or two.  At this point, we have three that are just about ready to go with the other two characters under construction.

Re: How to think about clans

No worries.  I invited people who I've gamed with over the years and I believe will have fun together.  Enarean's player is a great writer who takes initiative, exploring opportunities.  That he feels he can't make the time do that is something I'd would prefer to hear. :)  The game remains open to him, though adding him after we start will become problematic <rubs hands together>.
