Chapter 3: Origins

And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

Revelation 11: 3

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012. 11:59PM

A man dressed in nondescript clothing walks up to your front door, tapes a note to it, then leaves as quietly as he came. The note says:

[Private to Tobias Byrne: Decipher Script (auto-pass): Your intricate knowledge of Latin helps you to roughly translate the text. It is in Italian.]
[Private to Francis 'Frank' Decourcey: Based on your Spanish you can tell that the language might be Italian. You can pick out a word here and there, but nothing of substance]
[Language unknown: Omwil po oreonsble!

"...and it was just taped to the door?" Frank asked, studying the note again.

Something about it worried him, all those exclamation marks, but he didn't let it show. If it was related to his work with the Company, he didn't like the fact that whoever had taped it there clearly knew where he lived. He'd been careful to keep his work away from his family. He didn't want to disturb them, but he also didn't like the idea of them heading out where he couldn't protect them.

"Probably meant for someone who used to live here," he said, adding a dismissive edge to his voice that he didn't feel. "I'll ask the neighbors, see if I can find a forwarding address."

Diane looked unconvinced, but didn't push it any further. She finished her coffee and chased Bree upstairs to get her ready for school.

Frank looked over the note again, pouring himself some coffee from the pot on the breakfast bar. He looked at the small black and white image underneath the text. It looked familiar, but he couldn't put his finger on where he might have seen it before.

He pulled out his cell phone and took a picture of the note, then a close up of the image and attached both to an MMS.

[Toby, this was on my door this morning. Think it's Italian. Picture looks familiar too. Any ideas?]

Diane came downstairs, shouted back up to Bree to hurry up once she realised her daughter was no longer in tow. She turned to Frank.

"Have a good day, honey," she said, kissing him. "Don't forget to go to the store."

"Milk, OJ, pancake syrup, anything else?"

"That's all. I love you."

"You too."

Frank waited until he heard the engine sound of the car fading. He went straight through to the study, picked up the phone, dialled the Company, asked for John Burns.

"John? It's Frank," he said. "Something strange has happened, it's got me worried."

Frank explained about the note, about his concerns that someone knew about his work for the Company.

"I need to know my family's safe," he continued. "I need you to send someone to watch out for them - discreetly."

Re: Chapter 3: Origins

John seems ignorant of the note; it definitely isn't your next PARC contract. He agrees to send a "watcher", nonetheless, to look over Frank's family. Frank has never seen a watcher (nobody has, in fact; they are known unofficially as the "invisible bodyguards"), but he feels a little safer knowing he will have someone to keep his family safe.

Toby was alerted to the note on his door from the text he'd received from Frank. He looked up from his bed, over to the phone, stopping it from buzzing itself off the desk. He slid it open and checked the picture, glancing at it before nodding and typing a quick reply. [It's Latin-ish. If you mail it to me I could translate it.]

He yawned and slipped the phone into his pajama pocket and went to grab some breakfast, get the dead-tree...

A second text came a moment after the first one to Frank's phone.

[Nvm. Got 1 of my own. Translation 4thcoming.]

Bzzt, bzzt...

[You are invited!

What: You are cordially invited to join us for Diyamba's birthday party!

Where: From Port Sreet head south towards Rock Street. We are the big house on the left. You can't miss it!

When: No need to RSVP, just show up! We will be waiting for you!]

He tossed the phone down next to his bowl of cereal. He'd woken up with strange stuff typed on his computer; an invitation in Latin wasn't quite enough to phase him. He yawned again as he finished his breakfast, and went to Google Maps, see if he couldn't find the 'big house' from the street view, and maybe grab an address.
