Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

Sputtering as he steps backwards into the cover of the brush, Jibril frantically grabs his silver holy symbol around his neck--a human left hand pointing upwards, which radiates a faint blue magical aura. He thrusts it forward at the undead creature attacking him, babbling something at the abomination in the Celestial tongue.  "Amin sinta thaliolle e dagor!"

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

Yaotl did not hesitate once the attack command was given. To him, these skeletons were wrong, he could smell the sorcery holding them together. They carried no flesh, no muscles or tendons, yet somehow they found life, somehow they found the will to attack his master.

Hissing outrage, the Carnosaur bundled into the undergrowth, his massively muscled legs launching him at the skeleton attacking Jibril. He liked the funny man with the strange coloured skin and would not let the bone walker harm him. Yaotl stretched his jaw impossibly wide, revealing row upon row of dagger-like teeth lining his gums, and lunged forward to bite at the skeleton with the greatsword.

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

"Fareeda, Thaniel, if you can help with the one on Jibril, I'll hold these two," Abbas advised calmly as he stepped slightly to the side and provided a defensive bulwark for the dancer and archer to take protection behind.

The elven warrior considered the effect of the arrow on the skeleton and mentally hissed at himself for not fashioning a simple club - his blades were far too important to risk in strange behaviours or throwing off the balance.  More practical use of magic in battle was _definitely_ to be a subject of further exploration on this land of abundant life and undeath.

Instead, Abbas threw up a shield of flashing steel, pushing even his normal defensive skills to the maximum, but leaving him no opportunity to attack while he kept the two skeletons on his side occupied.

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

Reacting to the skeleton advance, Fareeda backed away to shelter behind Abbas. She knew her curved scimitar would accomplish little against such a foe and so instead reached for her mandolin, hoping her music could inspire her comrades to defeat the evil that rose against them.

Strumming an old melody, her soothing and beautiful voice rang out across the clearing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI4mv-aELZQ

Abbas stepped forward in the bard's stead, ducking and feinting as he made himself an impenetrable barrier, hoping to keep the skeleton's attention until the others could deal with it.

A sharp thwang of a released bowstring sounded from the other side of the clearing, then another seconds after.  Linni flinched as an arrow thumped into the trunk of the tree she sheltered by. Thaniel, already under attack by the axe-wielding skeleton, drew the attention of the second archer and buckled as an arrow took him in the lower leg.

The Carnosaur Yaotl leapt forward to Jibril's defence, his deadly jaw seeking to crush the abomination of bone. It managed a good evasion however and managed to evade the predatory lizard.

Under attack from two fronts, Thaniel staggered backwards in retreat, limping from two separate wounds. He lifted a a hand and launched a glowing bolt of light at the axe-wielding menace bearing down on him. The missile caught it full on the shoulder but seemed to do little to slow its advance. The elf was in trouble...

Jibril lifted his holy symbol and gestured wildly at the skeleton with the greatsword, hoping his lord Azuth might lend his will to this battle and banish the foul undead. The skeleton seemed to flinch at the sight of the symbol but otherwise nothing happened.

Safe behind the cover of a fallen log on the edge of the clearing Linni glanced around nervously checking deeper into the jungle for more undead. Satisfied that her brief reconnoitre revealed no further assailants she drew a wand from her belt. It was a small wand, gnome sized, and wooden. As Linni drew it from her belt the silver top emitted a dull purple glow which she ran a finger over.

Surveying the battle commenced Linni cast the wand towards the nearest skeleton archer, "Siitha curu!" A small purple star flew unerringly towards the skeleton and struck.

Krogan swung his morning star at the mace-wielding dead man.  He instantly realized that something was wrong.   In his enthusiasm, he'd forgotten about his weakness and dehydration from the jungle heat, his blow not as accurate as it should be.

He cursed in Orcish at his forgetfulness.   He was making a poor start to this adventure, and would need to step up his game if he was to overcome this place.

Thaniel staggers in the clearing badly wounded, but has the presence of mind to limp a step away from the oncoming skeleton. He turns and lines up the menacing skeleton that had resisted his ray of disruption and decides to try frost instead. He mutters some words and a long narrow blue beam, smoking from the cold, darts towards the undead.

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

More than a little unnerved by her weapon's apparent lack of effect on the creatures, Asha took a step back into the forest in order to seek cover from any further missiles which might end up directed toward her. Invoking her connection with the land she rimmed Yaotl's target in glimmering lights which danced eerily along its skeletal figure and gave the creature the impression of being on fire.

Hopefully, that would give her companion a better chance at striking the foe. If they didn't thin the numbers of these skeletons quickly they would be in trouble. As her bow seemed hardly worth the effort, she drew her masterfully crafted kukri with trembling hands. She was by no means a melee combatant, but it seemed that she might be forced to fight for her life nonetheless.

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

Lambrac was still lying motionless in the dirt. He'd lost all control of every muscle save those internal muscles he needed to live and breath. It was a hideous feeling of utter helplessness and terror, especially while he could hear battle all around. He couldn't make even the most feeblest effort to defend himself or get away, and he couldn't even scream.

With an effort, he forced himself to calm — he couldn't even panic properly in this state — sucking in breath and sand. What he could do, right now? Nothing. No, he could still see (dirt) and he had his cantrip (little use right now). He could think.

He had to get out of this, of course, but how? He cursed himself for setting off that trap; his job was to not set off traps after all. This was a trap, a magical trap, so the effect was magic not poison. It had affected his mind, made it believe it could not communicate with his body. Autonomic processes still functioned: heart, lungs. Theoretically, everything else could still move, but there was nothing to control it. He needed innate instincts, reflexes, to make his body move without conscious control, to work the machine in reverse and jump-start the engine.

So he tried to kill himself.

He held his breath as well as he could with his mouth stuck open, then cast his mind back to this morning and being trapped on a crashing airship. So high, high above the ground, looking over the edge, down, down, down, the whole wide world spinning below him. Picture it, feel it, believe it. Then he was falling, falling, falling...

The body would react in any way it could against dying. So it spasmed, arms and legs automatically leaping away from the sensation of falling, and he gasped for air, choking on sand and then coughing it out. Muscular control slowly returned, and he could twitch and shift his limbs once more with a glorious feeling of freedom.

Immediately, he rocked and pushed and finally rolled onto to his side, and tried to see what in the hells was going on. Eyes widened as he saw the group battling undead warriors.

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

Ah, the ever-present quandary - protect the girl, or the party?

Not that Abbas found himself able to do much against the skeletal foes, but it seemed the entire party was somewhat lacking on the bludgeoning attack materials.  Indeed, but for Thaniel and Linni, the party was seemingly unable to harm them, and even those two seemed limited in the harm they could inflict.

Still, the party had defences and teamwork, the most valuable combat tools one could manage.

As Thaniel's peril increased, and Fareeda moved into the pocket between Asha, her fierce - but safe so far - companion, Jibril, and Abbas himself, the pressure there eased.  The improvement in her protection opened up more flexibility for the elven warrior to move to support Thaniel, an opportunity smoothly seized.

Quick but graceful foot cross-overs - so alike dancing in the elven courts - put Abbas closer to Thaniel and drew the first skeleton's attention along with the first elf.  Notes of Fareeda's song lifted Abbas' spirit, and he shifted to his more balanced approach in combat, one thicksteeled blade high to block and threaten, the other low for advantage.

A quick flash-of-steel slap strike was easily blocked by skeleton1, but kept his attention on Abbas as the elf extended his defensive position for Thaniel to move behind to take cover.  The cool of the clearing kept the jungle heat at bay and made the conflict rather comfortable for the elf - most likely twice so for Krogan, one would presume.

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

As one of the only members of the group with a weapon designed for smashing bones, the onus was on Krogan to take the fight to these skeletal assailants. His first swing fell wide of the mark however and it was obvious his tiredness was affecting his ability to fight. Breath heaving from his lungs, he drew back and readied another swing.

Those near the stiff form of Lambrac began to notice his limbs start to twitch, then spasm. Slowly the mysterious magics that had frozen him helpless were wearing off. With a low groan, he rolled onto his back, one side of his face covered in dirt and grime. He glanced around deliriously, eyes widening as he saw the battle with the undead.

Ash began chanting, calling on her druidic magic to assist in the battle. The skeleton engaging Yaotl suddenly took on a glowing green outline, the strange light shifting and swirling over the ancient bones. She then stepped back into the jungle undergrowth, hoping the trees would give her some cover.

Linni rummaged around in her undersized backpack, finally retrieving a small wooden wand. She aimed it at the skeleton archer far to the north and spoke a command. A glowing bolt of purple energy flew unerringly towards the archer, hitting it in the sternum and promptly blew its ribcage apart. The reanimated husk crumpled, dead once more, to the earth.

Totally uncaring of their comrade's demise, the skeleton warriors pressed the attack. The skeleton wielding the greatsword turned to face its reptilian challenger and chopped down hard, two-handed. The blade cut into Yaotl's shoulder, slicing into his scaly flesh. The Carnosaur screeched in pain as thick blood splattered onto the jungle floor.

The second undead stepped after Thaniel, its twin axes seeking to finish the wizard off. Even badly wounded, Thaniel's elven reflexes allowed him to dodge the crude blows, though there was a desperation in his movement that suggested he could not take much more.

Matching Krogan's blunt weapon with its own heavy mace, the third skeleton swung again. It caught the orc on the arm but only as Krogan was turning away, stealing much of the blow's force.

The final abomination jabbed its spear at Abbas but the elven warrior batted the shaft away with the flat of his blade.

Fareeda continued her song, eyes closed to slits as her fingers played over the mandolin strings. It seemed she was in a trance within her music, transported far away from the carnage ensuing before her.

Abbas used the movement of his parry to spin around his foe and get closer to Thaniel who was obviously suffering. He flicked out his second blade but the skeleton matched him, blocking the strike with the spear's shaft.

The remaining archer loosed another arrow but this time it skittered harmlessly off the monolith behind Thaniel.

Yaotl, enraged by the skeleton's sword strike, launched himself at the vile skeleton. His hind claws pinned the unnatural creature to the earth as it bent forward and ripped its skull - spine still attached - from its battered body. Flinging the lifeless bones into the trunk of a tree, he roared belligerence at the sky above and turned towards the next enemy.

Thaniel staggered, back-pedalling away from his axe wielding assailant. He spoke another phrase and a beam of cyan blue energy shot into the skeleton's spine. Frost appeared over the decaying vertebrae but it seemed to have no effect whatsoever and it came on, axes raised.

Jibril, undeterred, aimed his symbol at the skeleton engaging Abbas and spoke again. This time the spear-wielding undead seemed to shiver uncontrollably and turned to flee - losing a rib to the flicked blade of Abbas as it went. A look of smug satisfaction fell on the priest's face as he watched it run.

Meanwhile, the monolith had sunk to nearly half its former height...

Linni laughed as her missile hit the skeleton, collapsing it in a pile of bone and dust. At least one more archer was out there, she saw Thaniel take an arrow to the knee, she just couldn't see the assailant from her current position. Weighing her options of either attacking the skeletons she could see, or taking down another of the archers she decided with the latter. The melee seemed under control now that everyone was better positioned, and none of her party seemed in a position to effectively attack the archer.

Stepping out of cover Linni darted along the treeline until she could see the second archer, stepping into the brush and behind a slimy wet rock Linni prepared herself for her next attack.

"Yaotl!" The druid shouted her concern as her companion took a blade in his shoulder, wincing almost as though the blow had landed on her instead. She immediately made her way to his side and lay her hands on his powerfully muscled body even as the Carnosaur finished rending his foe into oblivion.

"I will knit your wounds, my friend; continue your attack." Her voice was whispered for her companion alone, though whether he understood or not was anyone's guess considering the tumult of battle as well as the fact that he was, in fact, a dinosaur.

With an effort, limbs stiff and aching with residual paralysis, Lambrac pushed himself unsteadily to his feet, swaying and blinking. All about him was chaos, their forces scattered and beset by the skeletons. One was down, at least. Looking around, he saw Krogan struck in the arm, and he went to help.

Stumbling forward, he drew forth the crude club he'd fashioned earlier and swung as hard as he could at the skeleton, clumsily but effective, battering armour and bones alike. He thanked Gond for the inspiration to craft himself a blunt weapon that morning.

Then he waved at Krogan, gesturing him to move around the skeleton. "Kro—an, flang!" he slurred, still feeling the after-effects of the paralysis.

With his close foe down, Abbas circled through the short grass to place himself between the two skeletons remaining on the left side.

“Do not worry about these two – please feel free to handle the archer and Krogan’s first,” Abbas offered calmly (and politely) as he maneuvered himself between the other skeletons, putting himself in their face and attention to divert from the others.

Holding true to his style in combat so far, he found little opportunity for a strike home upon skeleton2, but delivered another attention-keeping feint with his thick-steeled short blades… easily avoided, but keeping the pressure on the right skeleton whilst Abbas kept his defences high against attacks.

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

Krogan slowed his attack down, keeping his shield high as his breath started to return. His eyes narrowed - he just needed to pick the right moment and... Crunch! The orc's morning star chopped down into the skeleton's exposed collar bone. This shattered under the force and the weapon's spiked head carried on into its ribcage, snapping several of the thick bones before wrenching free. The skeleton staggered to one side, barely standing...

...Only to stagger straight into Lambrac's wooden club which smashed its skull away into the jungle.

Asha rushed to Yaotl's side, her hands delivering warm energy into the sword wound in its shoulder. The ugly looking slash began knitting together impossibly fast, the dinosaur's skin cells and blood plasma infused with druidic magic.

At the other end of the clearing, those with a line of sight watched a long projectile fly from the jungle, spinning as it hurtled towards the second skeleton archer. Though not overly effective against animated bones, the javelin flew so hard and true it drove straight through the undead's spine, snapping it just below the ribcage. The skeleton collapsed in on itself and stopped moving.

Linni, who wouldn't have seen this event, moved up the treeline to get into range of the second archer. Seeing her target had already been returned to a pile of bones she stopped, annoyed she couldn't use her fun wand again.

There were only two skeletons left visible in the clearing and one was in full flight, cowering low as if dumb struck with terror. It seemed to not realise that it path was taking it straight towards the treeline where the surprise attack on the archer had come from...

The other seemed impervious to the fact that most of its comrades had been decimated and pressed on, concerned with nothing other than ending Thaniel's life. Its axes swung but the elf was again too fast, even wounded, and both blades fell wide.

Fareeda rushed to Thaniel's side, focusing her magic to heal some of the wizard's grizzly wounds.

Abbas moved to intervene between Thaniel and the remaining skeleton, his blades flashing as he tried to occupy its attention.

Yaotl, invigorated by Asha's magic, surged out of the jungle, his powerful legs launching him a full four feet into the air and onto the last skeleton. Ignoring its flailing axes, Yaotl simply ripped the undead abomination to pieces, his front and rear claws raking across dry bones whilst his heavy bite crushed and ripped. Bits of bone were thrown clear of the Carnosaur's vicious frenzy, landing across the clearing like broken twigs.

But for the heavy breathing of tired and wounded adventurers and the delighted snorting coming from Yaotl as he chewed on a femur, the clearing fell back into silence. The final skeleton had disappeared into the brush near where the spear had been thrown and there was no sign of movement in the foliage.

In the centre of the clearing, the monolith's descent into the earth stopped with the sound of heavy stone locking in place. It had sunk almost completely and now resembled a foot-high square platform sticking from the ground. In its centre a square opening about five feet wide was now visible. From this, stairs descended into inky darkness...

Keeping an eye out for the retreating skeleton, Krogan made his way to the wounded man.   He was a novice at this adventuring stuff, certainly, but undead mindless things that retreated was a bit troubling to him.    Panting more than he liked, he focused his Draconic Magic on healing.   Not himself, but anyone else in dire need of it.
Ironically, Fareeda might have already brought the wizard out of danger enough to not be affected by Krogan's healing aura, which was only good for critical wounds.

He kept watch over the remaining platform, and any other threats, while waiting for more enemies to show up and focusing on his magic.
OOC: Healing Aura gives anyone nearby Fast Healing1, but only up to half their hit points.

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

Linni frowned upon seeing the pile of bones across the clearing, and before she could throw a further spell the fight was over. She sighed to herself, slid the wand back into her belt and walked across the clearing to the monolith and the rest of the party. Climbing onto the now buried cube Linni stared down the revealed staircase and briefly considered throwing a rock down to see what would happen. She looked across to Lambrac, and decided against it least she be the next one paralyzed with her face in the dirt.

Instead she sat on the edge of the monolith and took a drink from her waterskin. Kei appeared from the bushes where Linni originally ran and scampered over to where she sat, the weasel keeping a watchful eye on their new dinosaur companion until Linni pulled a yellow beetle from a pocket and tempted him with the treat. With Kei now curled up at her feet and gnawing on the bright bug Linni looked around at the group, wincing as she noticed the wounds on Krogan and Thaniel.

With everyone exhausted Linni thought it best to remain quiet. She sat silently and threw the occasional sidelong glace towards the staircase.

Jibril frowned at Krogan as he ran over to the wounded elf. If he wanted to play witch doctor as well, so be it.  He didn't need to waste his divine powers on the fools that ignored his warning anyway.

With a smug expression on his face, he states, "Did you boys learn your lesson yet about messing with powerful artifacts? I suppose not."

While checking his clothes for damage, he also slings his pack over his shoulder. "Let's go.  The Professor sent us to find water before we all become as shriveled as prunes.  And I doubt those stairs will lead us to a crystal clear fountain of pure water."

Re: 2 Mirtul DR1368 - 'On the Horse you rode in on'

And that was it, the skeletons were destroyed or running. Lambrac swayed, still trying to regain muscle control and balance. Dropping his club, he fumbled for his water flask and took a drink to wash the dirt out of his mouth, but some leaked out over rubbery lips.

"Damn shtupid plashe to pud a trap, guardiansh and opening mechanishm," he said, slurring his words around the lingering paralysis. Jumping out of it early hadn't fully rid himself of its effects. "Where any dinoshaur can shet it off and open the joint up. Poor deshign. Better inside in close quarters..." In truth, he was kicking himself for poking around, but Asha or someone would have done it eventually. But he really wasn't going to accept Jibril's criticisms.

He looked back at the dungeon entrance, which seemed rather inviting. Normally, he would venture in, either on a job or on simple curiosity, but he really needed better preparation and supplies. "You never know, an elven crypt might feature a subterranean spring, maybe watering a garden. Elves like to bring the forest with them."
