Re: Pathfinder - Next Session

GM:
Steve, did you get B/X Options Class Builder?
->Yes, that is the book I got recently that really pushes me towards OSE

Dwarf mountain goat knight
->I just don't see how a dwarf is going to be able to hit anything without a range weapon. And a mountain goat isn't exactly a combat mount but I might be able to comprimise but we would have to hash out the details.

I still would like to get a sense of what type of game you want to play. Meaning do you want dungeon crawls, wilderness adventure, city adventures, more hack n slash versus puzzles or mysteries? Above ground, on ground, below ground, underwater, etc. or do you not care? Do you want to be good guys or bad guys? Heros, pirates, scoundrels, traders, craftsmen, a combination of things, monsters or something else? I can pretty much do anything but I don't want to spend numerous hours on preparing something you don't want to play or find it enjoyable.

I enjoy a mix of urban, wilderness, and dungeon adventures as well as getting to role-play my character.  Puzzle heavy games hold the least appeal for me.

The goat knight just amused me.  Really, the character can be distilled down to a dwarf fighter who eventually has a pony-sized goat for a mount.  Nothing complicated.

Re: Pathfinder - Next Session

Got it. Dwarven paladin riding goat with rocket launchers. Check. We can make it work..somehow. :)

Blades in the Dark does seem interesting so far. Still reading rules at a much slower pace now that I have a lot of other activities I'm doing. So far so good though. We would need buy in from folks though. Seems like Vern's preference is for fantasy.

Update on BitD: So, if folks really wanted to do this I would first suggest playing this type of game in a game system that we are already familar with like DND, cyberpunk or similar. Otherwise, there would be notable learning curve for everyone because the system is definitely different and would take some getting used to.

I'll try and get a game schedule posted up soon so we can finish up our current game and decide on a path forward whatever it may be. Andrew seems to have gone dark on us...

Vern, I'll hit you up on Private Message (PM) to hash out your Dwarf Paladin character. I have a plan...

I plan to put up a game schedule tomorrow. Lots going on especially with Easter in April but if we don't start will never get anywhere.

Anybody hear from Andrew? I also sent him an email and never heard back...

In reply to Lapis Corde' (msg # 293):

I haven't heard anything from Andrew either, though, I hadn't met Andrew prior to this game.

In regards to what kind of game I'd like to play, I'm not that tied to down to setting (fantasy/future). I have tended towards campaigns that are more mystery than just a pure hack and slash. 50/50, adventure/mystery, I guess?

I would be willing to buy in and work to learn BitD (or Wicked Ones, that also sounds neat).

Re: Pathfinder - Next Session

Ok. So subjective to Andrew's input I think old school fantasy with some mystery thrown in but not ludicrous puzzles (which I also tend to find annoying) is what I'll focus on. My intention is to use the Old School Essentials system but with ascending armor class. We have a lot of flexability on building a class to suit your character style. I also plan to offer a number of adventure hooks suitable for your level and you can pick and choose what you want to do or not do.

We will start at 3rd level minimum. Unfortunately, we'll need to use experience points but I will try to keep it as simple as possible. However, hit points will be fixed at your CON + your orginal class max hit die. In addition, you will get dodge points. Dodge points will be calculated as you would normally calculate hit point except we will be using the max. Dodge points will be used to dodge blows and will be regenerated after a short rest say roughly 15 minutes. If you don't have enough dodge points to dodge an attack or choose not to, then the attach damage will directly decrease your hit points. Furthermore, each PC will get 1 fate point per character level to use as they wish. Its intended design is for PC's to avoid death from failed saves or a bad run of die rolls but it can be used also to perform heroic actions..to a degree. I'll create another thread with all this info in it.

After you guys build your characters I'm going to ask you create a number of bonds between the characters and others. I'll go into more detail with that as well in aonther thread.

In the meantime, Richard, give me a character name I can use to setup a character for you. It doesn't have to be permanent but it will allow me to create the user in RPOL and make it easier for me to manage. And if you have a general idea of what type of character you may want to play we can start working out the details.

Perhaps we can try some one offs for other systems but I'll have to spend some more time learning them.

Assuming Andrew is not available to game for the moment, it would be advantageous if we could wrangle up 1 more player. Two or three more would be ok too. So if you know anybody that might be interested please feel free to reach out, send them to me or provide me their contact info and I'll reach out to them. Whatever method you think will work best.

So, if you the user has to select a PC when you login to my game, depending on which PC you select you may see different threads. General OOC threads I try to keep viewable by all but game specific threads I pin to a specific group and you need a character for that game to see those threads. I believe that's how it works. You can let me know otherwise if it doesn't. :)

Assuming this is the case, select a pathfinder character to see pathfinder stuff, old school essentials (OSE) character to see those game threads, etc.

Misc

Hi All,

Sorry for going dark for a little bit - had a few family medical issues that were using up a lot of my time. Things have resolved for now, and I'm free and happy to play in person again. I had an issue with my e-mail where my RPOL updates weren't coming through which I've hopefully fixed.

ok. I regret hearing about family medical challenges. Family first no matter how much I might complain. :)

I did reach out to 2 people in hopes of adding some more players but no dice so far.

With Andrew back I think I'll post up a new schedule for us to start gaming again. If you want to show up in person, great, if not, that's ok too. We did a major cleanup on our dining room table so I think with a little more effort we will be set there.

Re: Misc

I have some good news. Eric Lang may be joining us remotely.

I also ran into Dave Neushultz (sp?) forgive me as I seem to never be able to get his last name correct. He asked about everybody and 'might' join us but he definitely didn't commit to anything so we'll see.

In addition, I did reach out to 2 others. One declined and the other I haven't heard back so most likely that's a no go.

---

Andrew & Richard, if you could come up with at least character names for your new characters that would be helpful. That will allow me to create a pc for your user name and assign them to the appropriate RPOL groups for me to manage.

Vern, unless you want to wait until we game in-person I'm waiting for your feedback in the PM I sent to you.

I will repeat this in more detail but it is my intention to have an open fantasy based world and present the players with various opportunities and allow you to pick and choose what you want to do. In addition, if YOU have ideas that you want to explore I'm willing to try and work with you in that as long as they make some reasonable sense in a fantasy setting.

We will use the Old School Essentials (OSE) ruleset but with ascending armor class. I will help build your characters. You can be almost anything in a fantasy setting but playing monsters for example would prove difficult at best. However, think of a character concept and we can customize to your vision as best we can.

Re: Misc

I will have at least one physical copy available. PDF versions are available on Drive Thru RPG.

Think about what type of character you want to play and if you can come up with a name you like pleaes let me know so I can setup a PC for your username here on RPOL.

I have both basic and advanced rulebooks as well as the options book in hardcover which I will share with folks. That said, the more you can figure out ahead of time the faster we'll get done with character generation and move more quickly to playing. I am going to require a bit more upfront work with characters this time in order to generate more roleplaying opportunities for us all.

Re: Misc

Yes, that is the basic ruleset which is also available for free here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/p...sentials-Basic-Rules

For character name you can list it here or send me a PM. Either way works. For additional questions about your character though we will work it through PM's.

Those rules should give you a flavor for the game but as far as a character concept goes don't feel like you are strictly restricted to what's listed in the rulebook. I'd rather you come up with a character idea and we will come up with the rules to make it work.

Re: Misc

I’m still deciding between magic / non-magic characters. Do you guys want to coordinate party comp at all or should it be a nice surprise? A friend of mine was in a game where all the players separately decided to play bards, so it was 4 bards wandering around the under dark. Apparently ended up being a great campaign but it did involve some strategic planning.

Steve, do you need a standard party comp for your campaign? Or should we focus on characters that are interesting to RP and try to see what shenanigans arise?

Also OSE doesn’t seem to have good/evil just lawful/neutral/chaotic. Is this something to coordinate?

Re: Misc

->Personally, I don't think so. There will be plenty of help available if you want extra muscle or magic. Also, you have a lot of customization options. You could technically have the abilities of all classes but you would advance slower then a flail snail stuck in a gelatinous cube.

4 bards
->It's a band! Luv it!

focus on characters that are interesting to RP
->yes this

good/evil just lawful/neutral/chaotic (alignment)
->I don't really care so much what you call it. Other than a cleric/paladin type where they will be expected to match their alignment to their deity. Alignment will be based on your PC's actions and can change accordingly. I recommend keeping away from evil based alignment PC's for this game unless the group decides that's what they want to do as an evil based game but I didn't get that feeling that, that was the case.
