Chapter 2 a summoning

Six lazy months in Khorsun finds the noble conquerors feeling lazy and bored. Even though winter has come and gone the city is in fine shape without even a hint of Byzantine reprisals. Most in the city realize it is just a matter of time before this happens though.

Zmija and Loukas have spent their time diligently working on establishing a trade center near the docks of Khorsun dedicated to their patron deity Volos. Things are going well and a few more monks of the order arrive int he city every month. Loukas has risen rather quickly in the ranks and there are quite a few acolytes under him now.

Balthazar and Dyanna have spent most of their time together traveling and researching.

Jaleh has been distant with only A'kos seeing her on any regular basis since he has taken up living with her in the estate left to her.

When no engaged with Jaleh, A'kos often finds himself engaged in exercises of arms with Sir Jean, Miroslav, Ulfr, Radvila, Oleg and anyone else with the inkling.

The growing Slavic population of Khorsun are full on celebrating the holiday known as Maslenitsa (mar 21) as the end of the winter frosts...the weather has been nice for almost 3 weeks straight at this point. Vendors can be found on just about every street in the city selling round pancakes representing the new sun.

Dobrynya has call the party of adventurers to the palace...there is rumor that the Knyaz has fallen ill, he has asked for them by name...the regent awaits your arrival to fill in the details.

Re: Chapter 2 a summoning

It has been an intense six months. Not only has he been involved in establishing a temple and monastery of Volos, the Hall of the Horns and Wool, he has spent the other 12 hours of the day in intensive training with Zmija and the other monks who have joined them. In the process he has gained abilities that he had never known were humanly possible.

As he has gained in ability he has taken over greater responsibility from Zmija in the monastery, which has enabled his Master to focus his energies on the Temple. The result is now Khorsun has a safe place in the Temple where merchants may now meet to do business and have their agreements notarized, etc., and they may store their goods under the protection of strong walls of the monastery and disciplined eyes of the Monks.

Additionally, the Temple has encouraged local performers by having weekly events at which they may compete for prizes as well as offering free meals to artists of all sorts. The winners of the competitions have been offered commissions to create works for holy days and city events. Meanwhile, Monks have begun to patrol the area around the Temple and monastery and docks to ensure the area's security.

Through this time Loukas has invited his old friends to the events at the Hall, but he has been rather focused upon matters related to his new learnings and Order to spend too much time with any of them. So, when he receives the summons he is worried to hear the rumors of the Knyaz's health, but excited to see his old friends. When he arrives the first thing those who know him will notice is that whereas formerly he was always wearing armor, bearing shield, bow, daggers and his blade, Akribis Alitheia.  Now, however, he is much more simply, if severely dressed in a simple brown and black robe worn over a brown tunic with a cowhide cloak and boots.

While he is no longer quite.

Hearing the summons Dyanna makes ready to head to the palace.  She dresses in typical spartan fashion (as opposed to Spartan fashion - to clarify), her simple cuirass, a couple of daggers, and her bow strapped across her back.  Inspecting herself a last time in her mirror she makes ready to leave.

A sudden thought occurs.

Mulling over events she makes her way to Balthazar and says, "I am ready, Baldy."

The nickname seems to suit...

Balthazar touches his flowing locks of hair, as if to make sure they are still there.  "Baldy?"

Balthazar shrugs, casts fly on himself and Dyanna, and the duo fly across the city and into the palace.  The sight of them flying about the city has become somewhat of a regular occurrence over the last couple of weeks since their return.

Zmija arrives with Loukas. He remains fairly quiet and lets Loukas catch up with the others on what he been up to regarding his training and the work being done on the Hall of the Horned Serpent.

Before they are addressed by Dobrynya, Zmija says to Loukas..."I am fairly certain that travel in in your future.Ii will remain in the hall and continue our work here in Khorsun. If it comes to it, I would like you to travel with your companions. This is part of your training as well."

Dobrynya has arrived but is not calling for an audience as of yet. He is waiting for all the others to arrive.

Miroslav has been here for a few days already. Apparently he is already privy to the information about to be disclosed. He has left Barmak and Oleg to prepare the ship in case there is a need for a speedy departure. His retainer Boris stands silently by his side. Also by his side is the woman Masha who some of you have come to know in the last six months as Miroslav's wife. She and their 3 children joined him from Kiev just a month after the taking of Khorsun. They have taken up living in an estate near the palace.

"I'll never get tired of that," giggles Dyanna, landing next to Balthazar.  "A joy indeed."

Noting the rather somber congregation of the fellows in the party, her grin fades and she takes on a more practiced, serious mien.  She nods her hellos to the other party members, offering a quiet smile for Sir Jean, then settles in to wait.

"Where are A'kos, and Jaleh?" she asks quietly.

In reply to Zmija (msg #6):

Although it had been a busy six months Loukas had done his best to stay in touch with Miroslav. Well, really that means that he was present when Masha and the children arrived and drank them welcome, but given how busy everyone was it was sufficient. At least he hoped...

Meanwhile he greets Dyanna and Balthazar and Jean heartily. As good as it has been to start his new life it is wonderful to be with friends.

When Zmija speaks to him he replies, "Thank you, Master. I shall tell the world the tale of Volos and return with tales of the world."

"JALEH," roars A'kos.  "Are you coming woman?  We're due at the palace!"

A'kos stands, fidgeting in his travel gear, although he does wear the blue jerkin Jaleh won at daggers what seemed ages ago for the audience.  He was eager to be off, though saddened of news of the Knyaz illness.  He barely knew the man, but coming to know his retainers and those officers in his army who would deign to speak with the Falcon about tactics and such he respected the loyalty engendered among those men.  By that alone he knew the man to be of worth.

Outside, Storm's Wind was tied, the stallion hovering protectively over Jaleh's erstwhile light riding horse - the Falcon was ready to go, having grown bored of the city life after six months.  To be sure there were benefits; their lovemaking had grown far more acrobatic and urgent during the time in Khorsun, but a warrior's life was on the plain and he yearned to feel the free wind upon his face - to often missed these past months.  Almost he could feel a fresh breeze now, and his ire growing he called, "JALEH, what are you doing, woman?  We must needs leave for the palace now!  The bells rang many minutes ago!"

Then Balthazar reads the situation and grows silent like Dyanna, looking wonderingly at Dobrynya.

Mouth opened to mutter something appropriately inappropriate, A'kos halts and stares, admiring Jaleh, and the swish of her outfit.  After a moment he says, "Fit to meet with a King, Lady!"

Holding his arm out, he cups her hand where it sits in the crook of his arm and walks her to her horse.  Helping her mount, he climbs aboard Storm's Wind and the two of them ride for the palace as quickly as traffic will allow.

Some time later they find themselves in front of the palace where two grooms rush forward.  Dismounting swiftly A'kos growls, "Have a care with him...he's got a temper!"

Assisting Jaleh down he walks with her into the palace to find the gathering of their companions...and notes that, yes, the couple was indeed late to the summons.

Dyanna looks up as A'kos and Jaleh make their entrance.  She smiles as the months since she'd spent any significant time seemed to have changed them.  A'kos seemed...more tame, though the dark intensity of his gaze as it swept over the rest of the group remained.  For her part Jaleh appeared at once the noble lady not yet truly comfortable in her skin.  Nodding as they greeted everyone she leaned back against a wall and awaited the summons.

Re: Chapter 2 a summoning

I typed out a longer version fo this, just about 20 minutes ago but my browser crashed and I lost it:(

The Rus herald calls for the audience. it seems only those from the Heart of Oak and a few select other Rus are present.

Once the group has assembled before the regent, Dobrynya begins to speak, his face lined with worry..."Greetings great bogatyri (basically knights or heroes) of Khorsun! I trust this day finds you in good health.

For some time now there have been rumors that all is not well in the kingdom of the Rus. My...trusted aid and your captain Miroslav has been helping me piece together the gathered intelligence over the last week or so. From what we have gathered there was some political intrigue in Pereyaslavets and the youngest son of the Knyaz, Vladimir has been killed as has his mother. Sviatoslav himself has fallen gravely ill with  a wasting sickness and his two sons Oleg in Novgorod and Yaropolk in Kiev prepare for war with each other. They only wait for the Knyaz to pass on.

Yesterday we received a message from the Knyaz which confirmed many of these facts. He has requested that the heroes who captured Khorsun come to him in his capital. he does not give reason for this, only a summons.

Miroslav has had your ship prepared and I wish you to sail before nightfall. Time is of the essence. I am afraid the Knyaz may not have long before he joins his ancestors."

Looking at Balthazar Dyanna murmurs, "Was peace too much to wish for?"

With a sigh she checks herself...of fortune she had rigged upon her pack a place for her invaluable mirror, though she would have a care lest she break it and release it's mystical energy...an explosion surely she would not survive.  With greater thought she checks her bandoliers, the pouches each with a full contingent of the material components of those spells she currently had memorized.  Looking up from her inspection she glances at the others.

"I am ready," she says, "though I fear for peace in this tumultuous time."

Just two hours later Miroslav stands on the deck of the Heart of Oak waiting for all the party to arrive. Oleg and Barmak make a good team and the ship is all in order and ready to go. Familiar faces line the benches particularly Ulfr and Radvila who have both taken up oars near the front of the ship.

Re: Chapter 2 a summoning

The voyage to the Capital of the Rus proves uneventful, even enjoyable in some ways. After winter the warmer spring air on the Black Sea is quit refreshing.

Miroslav proves himself capable of handling the ship as does the entire crew. With the favorable winds the ship really needs to be rowed in it's journey up the Danube to the capital.

Once docked, one of the Knyaz advisors, Medved, an older  but obviously military man begins to usher to see the Knyaz himself in his private chamber. Only A'kos, Balthazar, Dyanna, Jaleh, Loukas, Miroslav and Sir Jean are taken to see the Knyaz. Rather than head straight through the palace, they go around the back and enter through a smaller door, weaving through unused corridors and servants quarters until the reach the Knyaz's chamber.

As you walk Medved speaks of the latest history..."Things have gone from bad to worse!

The Knyaz returning from a campaign against the Pechenegs just south of Kiev fell mysteriously ill. No healer can diagnose his ailment. He wastes away day by day.

Even as the word of his ailment spread, the Knyaz's oldest sons, Oleg and Yaropolk, prepare to make war on each other to take the throne. Each claim to be more fit than the other for rule. T Hey refuse to rule together in peach and war is the inevitable outcome should things continue like this.

The Knyaz has summoned the most powerful heroes across the land to deal with this problem. And so it has come to pass that you face the Knyaz in a meeting so secret that even his guards are ordered to stand outside his door.

Medved opens the door ushering you in. He then closes the door after him as he leaves saying..."I will have your mounts seen to and have mounts ready for the rest of you provided that you will need them.

In a rather non ornate and spartan chamber sits the bed of the Knyaz...who himself sits in the middle of it propped up by cushions.

"Some five months ago my youngest some Vladimir and his mother were killed, murdered, by a scheming bastard calling himself Gregor. Gregor made it look like the Boyars did it, to distance my relationship with the nobility. it worked, I lost half my soul that day."
he says as he wipes a bony hand across his eyes.

"I am dying, there is nothing any healer can do to save me. But you are not here to listen to my past. You are here because I have summoned the greatest bogatyri in all the land. I give you just one task."

The Knyaz's speech is interrupted by a fit of coughing. His pained expression speaks a volume. When he finally props himself up on one elbow you can see the desperation in his eyes.

"The last healer I saw was an old withered hag. She told me my youngest son Vladimir lives yet. WHen I inquired where I would find him she gave me this wooden ball."

"She said, "roll this ball before you and it will restore the prince to the throne.""
He reaches beneath a cushion and rolls a small wooden ball tot he end of his bed saying..."Take it, follow it."

He then closes his eyes for a long time, long enough that you think he may have fallen asleep. When he opens them his voice is but a whisper..."Go quickly. The father waits for his son...longs to be with his wife." With what little strength he has left in him he rings a small bell by the bed.

The party lead by A'kos and Balthazar follow the wooden ball out of the palace then out of the city itself and into the open plain to the north. The ball keeps and even traveling pace and seems to know that whoever follows it will need to rest now and then. Every three hours it stops for a half hours rest and it stops completely when the sun goes down.

With sundown on the first day the party finds themselves traveling north by north east. The foothills of the Carpathian mountains loom in the distance.

Quiet a moment he continued.

"That was many years ago...it wasn't until much later that the dark shaman brought us low in those mountains, and some years after that that his ankle was pierced by the hatchet of the light..."

Turning he says, "That is a different story...but if we go up there, it will be treacherous."

Morning finds the ball rolling and the party following once again. It is clear that the ball is heading to the mountains. The party continues to follow and by midday you are deep into the foothills, the terrain gets rougher and hills are becoming mountains.

As you crest the next rise, the southern portion of the mountain chain looms before you. One mountain stands out, spiraling up through the heavens into a vortex of swirling clouds. The shrieking of winds makes it difficult to concentrate. At the base of the mountain you can see a cave mouth. Just then the wooden ball disappears with a loud popping sound.

This mountain is impressive and odd looking. It seems that you should have been able to see it from a further distance but must have not noticed it until the ball brought you fairly close.

It looks like it would be very very hard to climb and the winds whipping around the mountain would be treacherous for anyone attempting to fly.

"Knew this might come in handy," she murmured to herself, casting her thoughts toward the cave entrance trying to see within.

What everyone can see...the cave is set deeply into the mountain. You can barely make out a large iron door that has been bolted into the rock.

What the mirror shows...there seems to be something partially blocking the scrying attempt but a few things do come through. A large boulder above the inside of the door and a flash of a short hairy muzzle, impossible to tell what it is for sure other than it is brown and large...possibly a bear.

She then stands, and says, "Stand away from the mirror, if you please."

Holding the mirror on its short side, it comes nearly to her chin, and she holds the face of the mirror away, angling it so that it can reflect as much of the mountain as possible.

"Mirror, tell me of this mount that sits amidst its brethren in the Karpathian Range."

Dyanna's eyes are closed as if she is listening.  Of sudden her eyes open, and she lifts the mirror and carefully wraps it again in cloth, making sure to fasten it securely to her horse before once again addressing the party.

"It seems we're destined to cross paths with princes from each of the elemental planes during our travels," she says with a frown.  "This height that rises before us is being shaped into a fortress by one from the elemental plane of air, a djinni.  He is working very hard to prevent scrying, thus I fear I learned but little as I looked within, but what I did learn gives me some pause."

Taking a moment to collect her thoughts she continues, "He is a wind lord of sorts and controls the air around the mountain.  It would be foolhardy indeed to fly up to the peak, or anywhere about - surely such attempts would end in disaster."

"I also venture that he is one shunned by his own.  I would guess this means that his heart is black, though I cannot say for certain.  His existence here does bring to mind some questions, however, including how he might be shaping this fortress within...seems the wind might carve the face of the mountain to his liking, but he'd need help to form the corridors within."

Looking about she grinned then and said, "Should be fun."

More somberly she finishes her thoughts.

"Carrying my mirror through carven caverns is impractical, yet perhaps our previous adventures have given us a means to battle this being - Balthazar, did the cube foolish Pyotr play with get lost when he was executed?"

he looks up and marvels at the sheer cliffs of the mountain, surely no easy task with the winds and all..."We have no way of knowing where this door leads but clearly the ball has brought us before it...or at least brought us before the mountain. My vote is that we should try and get into the mountain through yonder door. You said the door was trapped and seems to be guarded as well...there must be a reason for this."

A stone as tall and wide as the doorway itself swings down and out of the entrance, Loukas has his wits about him enough to roll out of the way and avoid any damage. The boulder rolls to a stop some ten feet from the door.

This does provide Loukas a chance to sneak up behind the great beast and drive his sword into the wide furry back nearly to it's hilt...but even though it is a wound that would have killed most men and some other beasts, this bear is beyond tough and huge...did I mention it was huge?

5,000 pounds of bear whirls about to face it's attacker from behind. Loukas is lucky enough to have been able to hang onto his sword and withdraw it as the beast turned. This gives the entire party a free shot at the beasts back at +2.

Even though it has fought well past where it should have died it finally drops to the ground expired.

The dark cave lies ahead. it does not seem as if there is a single source of light with in.

Re: Chapter 2 a summoning

When the great creature finally comes down with Sir Jean's and Miroslav's attacks a wash of relief comes over Loukas. The Kainkutho are legendary creatures, after all. Some say they are demons, others that they are demi-gods. Regardless, he knows that it took a group effort and whether it was mortal or not it was a being of great power. Quickly he goes to a knee and says a silent prayer to Volos not only of thanksgiving, but to mark the passing of such a creature.

Standing he moves forward, "Well done, my friends! We have defeated a legendary beast. As if that ball we are following was not impressive enough, whomever we're after is clearly a being of great power."

Glancing back over his shoulder he continues with a wry grin, "I have a tinder box, anyone have a torch?"

Once Loukas gets both lit Miroslav will be the first to walk in the cave saying to Loukas..."Stay up front with me, my young friend...your eyes are better and spotting traps than mine."

The party enters the cave, the lantern and torch cutting through the darkness. There is not much to see here in this room that seems to be about 20' by 40' except for a badly mangled corpse that looks to be of an indeterminate age...well, more like a pile of gnawed bones with bits of mail armor, a pack and a few buckles to let you know it was at one time a corpse.

At the other end of the room directly opposite the entrance is another oak door. This door is only about 3' wide, much too narrow for the bear to go through even if it was open.

There does not seem to be any traps according to what Loukas and anyone else can tell.

Miroslav leads the group past the pile of bones and to the oak door.

Re: Chapter 2 a summoning

The three warriors find themselves in a large room, perhaps a throne room of sorts. There is a crank on the wall near the door that can be used to shorten or lengthen the chain which holds the hydra.

A large golden throne occupies the far end of the room. One huge table spans the length of the hall, piled high with all manner of exotic fruits and vegetables. Carafes of wine are interspersed throughout the banquet, along with massive goblets. A spiral stair case winds both up and down behind the throne and a small door is tot he left of the throne.

There is no living creature here.

OOC: Sorry, RL got in the way of things at the end of this week.

Loukas looks around the room and at the crank interested to learn whether or not the Hydra can be cranked even closer to the castle and figuring out what effect that would have if we have to run past that thing on their escape. As he does so he cracks, "More recent Byzantine history consists of a story or two about being careful about a host's offerings as well.

"It is odd to lay out such a repast and leave it unattended, no? Since we were led here by a magickal ball, I suspect that our host has been expecting us for a while. The question is do we wander Upstairs to find him, interrupting his grooming, wander through the doorway and seek out some staff, or sit anywhere but the golden throne and await his notice?"

For the first time since he has joined them back in Constantinople more than a year ago, and despite all that they have been through together, his friends see a look of abject fear dawn on his face. Glancing around the table and then back to their host he continues in a louder, but still subdued voice, "It is Baba Yaga who is behind all of this, is it not? The 'old woman healer' that the Knyaz told us he last saw... Who gave him the ball we follow..."

As he spoke the fear disappeared and his face hardened. Standing he takes a quick, graceful step back from the table and into a ready stance, "And The Deathless is Baba Yaga's shepherd, is he not Vikhor? We have indeed been manipulated, my friends... Baba Yaga does not desire that we kill her henchman Koschechei the Deathles, but our host. If we destroy Vikhor, we shall save the Knyaz!"

The whirlwind grows to a height of about 15 feet which is pretty much all the room will allow. Balthazar can obviously see through the invisibility of the Djinni as his magic missile sinks home near the top of the whirlwind. Both Jaleh and Loukas take the Hedonites advice and attack at the top of the whirlwind. Still at -4. Jaleh lets loose two arrows but both miss, Loukas climbs the wall nearest the whirlwind and manages to land an attack with his sword but it is only a glancing blow, still Vikhor belows in rage upon feeling the blade cut him.

Dyanna's spell fails to have any effect on the whirlwind or it's invisible master.

A'kos and Miroslav manage to tip the great iron cask on it's side. Wine which had already been near waist deep on the Frank pours onto the floor in great gouts, gets picked up by the whirlwind and is in effect like a wine rain whipping in the faces of the party.

Fruit, wine, plates and debris whip around the room hitting everyone except for Jean who is ironically safe inside his barrel. These items are hitting hard and causing real damage. Miroslav takes the worst of it as he is grabbed up by the winds and dashed against a wall near the window. It is clear that Vikhor was aiming for the window and the great fall on the other side of it but failed.

Suddenly, on the far side of the chamber a hole begins to appear near the wall.  It seems a wormhole or gate of sorts, formed of swirling mists of ether, then forms fully so that within can be seen a panaramic view of a hellscape of molten flame, above which floats a vast city sitting above a burning flame.  Those nearest the hole can feel extreme heat being dragged into the tornado, then as the group watches a figure can be seen swiftly approaching the hole.  Looking on, the group recognized the form of Basrakan, and the great efreet pulls himself through the hole to stand on flagstones that melt beneath his feet.

"Vihkor!"</DarkBlue> booms his great voice.  <DarkBlue>"What have you done?"

Suddenly the efreet leaps toward the djin to attack.

Spectral force of the above scene - Dyanna will concentrate upon it as long as it seems to be working.

The whirlwinds dies down for a few seconds as Vikhors sees the form of Basrakan enter through the wall. He is fooled only for an instant and quick casts dispel magic, this cancels out the illusion and Balthazar's see invisible spell but not his fly which he casts just after the dispel magic.

This means no damage to anyone this round by either the debris or being thrown by the wind. Vikhor has also managed somehow to dispel his own invisibility spell and is now quite easy to see sitting atop his whirlwind.

Jean can see a small crack near the top of the cask he is sealed in. He should be able to get the tip of his sword into it.

Re: Chapter 2 a summoning

Dyanna's spell has no effect on Vikhor, he shrugs it off without batting an eye.

Dyanna's spell causes Vikhor to turn his back to the room making the back attack easier for the Hedonite. The blade of his scimitar sinks into the soft fat flesh of the Djinni's back. Balthazar would be hard pressed to slash any harder than he just did...his time training with Oleg has payed off well.

Loukas hits the djinni hard as well as he drops from the ceiling onto Vikhor. His blade sinks deeply into the great fat back as well causing Vikhor to howl in pain an anger.

Jaleh and A'kos pepper the Djinni with arrows and when all is done, three arrows stick from the great back.

Miroslav picks himself off the floor and launches himself in the air with his axe blade whistling overhead. He scores a deep cut on Vikhors right leg. The Djinni is badly injured and now his blood mixes with the wine and debris flying about the room.

There is a great crash as the door splinters in and the three headed hydra stands with it's broken chain hanging off of it's harness.

Jean manages to get the point of coffin nail into the crack and begins to pry. The enchanted blade creaks and bends under the force but holds true and does not break. He has managed to open up the crack to about 10 inches.

Vikhor gets no atack this round...next rounds actions please.

Re: Chapter 2 a summoning

Vikhor spins atop his whirlwind causing both Balthazar and Loukas to miss with their blades. A'kos fares better as he leaps up and slashes the Djinni twice with his sword causing Vikhor to lurch to the edge of his own whirlwind. One of Dyanna's arrows hits the Djinni in the side of the head and down he goes crashing to the floor head first.

The whirlwind vanishes as soon as Vikhor hits the ground dropping Loukas but the young monk is able to roll with the fall and sustains no injury. Loukas lands near the djinni and from the cant of Vikhor's fat neck it is clear that he is no more.

Jaleh looses two arrows at the hydra but they bounce of it's tough hide.

Miroslav sees the tip of Coffin Nail sticking from the crack in the cask holding Jean. Wearing his gauntlets he leaps over and grips the edge of the cracked lid adding leverage to the Franks effort...the iron creaks for a moment then rips free. Jean is free!

Unfortunately for Jean, one of the heads of the hydra who had just bust through the door lets loose a blast of frozen air from it's lungs. Shards of ice and freezing wind gushes around the Frankish knight but he manages to turn away taking only minimal damage.

Jaleh is less lucky as the beast turns two of it's head towards her and while she nimbly avoids one blast with minamal damage she is struck full on with the second.  Shards of ice rip at her armor and exposed skin.

Assuming that no self respecting adventurer would give up the chance to explore a genies basement...

Miroslav leads the party down the cellar steps. There are several braziers on the wall, nothing fancy just iron and they seem to have permanent light coming from them that keeps the room well lit.

There looks to be nothing down here except for 10 barrels of wine lined against the west wall. The room otherwise is empty and is the same size as the one above it.

As Loukas walks he permits his senses to expand to their greatest extent in an effort to note any peculiarities in the cellar. Once in the room he moves to the barrels and begins looking about those in particular, as an empty one might make a fabulous secret doorway... Another element of his investigation is to take out his pewter mug from his pack and try the vintage from each. This, if nothing else, is a side benefit of doing the arduous work of an investigator!

With a slight sense of disappointment, after all he'd only had the opportunity to taste three of the barrels, Loukas puts his mug away and bends down to take a closer look, "It appears as if the journey into the depths of the Crystal Castle has not been all for naught, my friends!"

If he finds no sign of a trap he will open the latch; however, if there is a trap he will first attempt to disarm it.

Finding not even the slightest indication of a trap, Loukas lifts the hatch only to be greeted by blackness with a ladder descending into it.

Miroslav grabs one of the glowing braziers from the wall. Surprised by the lack of heat coming from the metal object he holds it over the hole showing that the ladder only extends for about 12 feet or so and there is a carved stone floor beneath. Intricate knot patterns can be seen from above carved into the granite of the mountain itself.

The party finds itself in a small stone 10' by 10' room. The walls and floor are well lit by the two braziers, one held by Loukas the other by Miroslav.

The floor is carved in spiral knotwork patterns unlike what anyone has seen before but vaguely similar to the designs used by the Northmen...but with a more primitive ancient look about them.

There is a lone wooden door on the opposite wall.

Little less could be expected of such heroes. Let me see you.”

One twinkling blue eye opens from beneath a snow white tangle of eye brow.

Yes I see you now. All faces that should be expected but there are faces missing that you wish should be here with you now, take heart we will all be with those we miss one day when our paths meet once more.

But who is here now.

The Men of the North, as hard and decisive as the cold steel they would take to their enemies. Many more shall fall to your skill and great heart, many more honours and riches to be won.

The Men of the South, cloaked in shadows, armed with mystery and guile to thwart your foes. Many more secrets are yours to uncover, I shall say no more and respect the cover you both weave.

The Horse Lord, dashing and brave, though you would rather be riding on the plains this path will lead there soon enough and then the winds will fill with your people’s songs about you and all you care for.

The One who has travelled furthest, you have already made a place for yourself amongst a world alien to you. You have a great deal further to go but then  you did not think you’re ultimate prize would be so easily reached?

And finally the Rose surrounded by the sharpest of thorns, yet sharper and more deadly is she. Perhaps you do not yet realise but in your heart you know your truth and fate shall hold no sway over you, trust your heart.

His final words seemed to be for Dyanna. Loukas interpreted the "dear" to be meant for her and he he moved no closer, instead standing ready for a surprise movement from the man. One who speaks in mysteries may be intentionally hiding as much as he accuses of others of hiding.

He begins to walk towards the end of the hall brazier in hand...."Loukas, are you ready for another door?"

Čuivi is pronounced with a 'ch' at the begining. rpol software does not allow for special characters in character names or else it would be reflected there. No need to figure out how to make the mark or copy and paste it every time you need to say the name...after all this game is played all in our heads:)

Loukas makes short work of this lock as well. Simple locking mechanisms...clearly Vikhor had no fear of anyone breaking in, just keeping the doors locked from the outside.

Miroslav pushes the door open and holds the brazier high, illuminating the room.

The room is 20' by 20' and clearly the repository for the gear from Vikhors victims and there must have been many since the room is piled high with weapons armor and equipment.

He quickly pulls his armor on and gears up in case tehre is a need for combat yet here in the keep.

Once he's used the wand Loukas sits back on his haunches, "So, how should we do this? It has been so long since we have had booty to share out... Beyond the coins, baubles and jewelry only the rings, particularly the Ring of Protection, are of interest to me."

As he speaks a thought occurs to him and with a glance to each of his friends and Miroslav he continues, "It also seems to me that if there is something here that either of our new friends might find useful. Fellows, here is the deal, we serve the Knyaz. He is dying and his son and heir, Vladimir, has disappeared and his mother murdered; however, a crone we have since determined is Baba Yaga offered to return the Prince to Sviatoslav's side if we follow a magickal ball to this place.

"We pieced things together when Vikhor attempted to convince us to slay Baba Yaga's henchman, Koschechei the Deathless, who was apparently his great enemy. He told us that if we asked Koschechei before we killed him the legendary hunter could explain our quest to us. So, once we have finished here we will follow another magick ball provided to us by Vikhor and inform him that we have done his mistress's bidding.

"We do not know what will come after that, but I suspect that once we learn where the Prince is we will then have to free him from Gregor, whom the Knyaz believes responsible for all of this, but whomever it is, we are likely to have to free our Prince from whomever is holding him. One might never know the machinations of one such as Baba Yaga, but without her we would have never freed you, so we might blame her for this meeting... Why don't you join us and help us stop the injustice that plagues the Royal House of the Rus?"

How foolish of her not to realise those she would use as tools may yet ruin her machinations. It is she that must have unwittingly drawn me here, and mighty Yaro too, there is I am sure old blood in you. I think perhaps together we may all yet find a way to take the initiative from her."

He looks down at the collection of enchanted items. "Here, these prayer beads. They are marked with the cross now, I do not doubt they could prove useful to the Knight of Christ. But like so much of our world they are older than that, deeper magics still burn in them, it is possible I could achieve much more with them for the good of all. If I could examine them perhaps...."

Of course, given the mythic nature of these figures whether we will actually be able to do much against them seems to beg the question."

Realizing that he's beginning to tread on rather thin ice he pauses, "Anyway, if we tread the path as we have to date we will be just fine, my friend; indeed, better, because we are getting rather good at it all it seems to me!"

The old man listens while examining the prayer beads, nodding in agreement at the sage magicians beliefs. "Admirable thoughts sir mage, time on the whole will not stop for mere mortals and we are all measure by time from the day we come helpless into this world. Have a care though, sometimes it is in the waiting that the surer more advantageous path makes itself available to us. However I fear I have waited here quite long enough and a hard but fruitful path has been opened to me by new traveling companions. I long for the sky above my head, I believe the current silence of our Magyar friend attests to his own agreement on this matter. Should we leave this place my friends?"
