Re: Chapter 2

Oriental Adventures in an earthbound setting would be pretty cool, too.

I'll mull over my next move but there is not excuse for leaving things unfinished. SO back to posting.

I agree a Crusader era game would be nice also an Oriental Adventures would be interesting provided it was done well...perhaps Mongols?

Heh, if you're running a Crusades game, I'm still going after the Grail. ;)

Re: Chapter 2

In reply to Nestor (msg # 922):

Crusades would be cool... of course, if you're going to do any historical place/period and throw in a little fantasy, it could be cool.  I'm afraid I don't read nearly as much history as I should, so I've got some decent northern and western European history, but only a smattering of Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, and South America.  I likely know just enough history of the Orient to be terribly cliched.  :)

One problem I'd likely run into running a "historical" campaign is that I like different areas in different time periods.  So, you know, your Renaissance Italian gentlemen, mixing with your Frankish knights while Robin Hood is running around with Prince John in England while the Vikings are sailing about and are still all pagans worshiping Odin and Thor and company.

Of course, you don't really need to range that far; the Icelandic sagas did pretty well confined to one pretty sparsely populated island!

Re: Chapter 2

One of the tricks to an historical setting is to mnake it take place in a city or region where there is reason for a diverse group of characters to be in. This is why I chose Byzantium. No real questions of a character being there as long as they are not a far eastern one. In the past I set an ancient game in the Minoan empire on Crete...again in such a empire it was not out of place for people to have traveled tot he great city of Knossos on Crete.

That is one of the reasons I think a Crusader game would work given the international nature of the crusades.

Of course limiting your characters to a specific culture is also sort of fun. My first PBem campaign was set in 500 AD int eh British Isles...Celts and Romans were the order of the day and it was fun.

Re: Chapter 2

Lived in Japan for 3 years, so I have a small base of knowledge to draw from.

I'd have to read through Oriental Adventures to figure out what's what in the ADD multiverse, but it'd be a cool setting.  I'm not at a point to take on another game, however, so would probably forego the pleasure...

I still see a lot of opportunity in this game.  Changing venues only delays the burnout - you start fresh, close up shop here, and at some point you face the challenge of getting over the wall.

I go through it to - I think the break I took this summer was the best thing for my game, as I'm re-engaged by the time off.

I may take a month off or so in the future. I think that would help. I just want to not leave the game hanging at an inconvenient spot. Always up for playing in a game but running a game seems to take much much more out of me.

Re: Chapter 2

My bugaboo is maps.  Especially with the pre-printed PDF's - gotta go in and edit in MS Paint, which takes forever.  A lot of times I just hand print on graph or hex paper, especially at home where I am using a 6 year old computer with XP.

But as long as I'm DMing to the players narrative, I'm good.  When I try to start pushing my own agenda, I burnout - you pesky players always ruin my best laid plans.

Re: Chapter 2

Still here, just ran out of creativity for a while. I wanted to at least end the encounter on the grail thread but I fizzled. Maybe a week or so and I will be back to my sporadic schedule. I may also fuse the groups into one again in the near future.

The easy creativity booster: turn the Monster Manual to a random page, and figure out which monster on the resulting page makes the most sense to throw at us :)

LOL, just heard them joking about that on the Thaco's Hammer podcast (I've listened to #61-#63 this week, it was on one of them).

Re: Chapter 2

Get really creative, pull the MM's from 2nd, 3rd, 4th editions and pull something that's not in the 1st edition game.  That's fun to do to my guys in my game.  (oh, crap - you're in my game...)!

Re: Chapter 2

Is there a way to have rpol send an email when a thread I'm watching gets updated? I find I no longer come here anymore, so if the game ever restarts I will miss it.  Assuming there isn't, then if the game restarts just PM me @ ken-do-nim on Dragonsfoot.

Re: Chapter 2

Well, I think our erstwhile (?) DM is taking a longer vacation than we'd hoped.  I'm hoping this game will pick up again, if not, its been a fun ride - seems like a solo charge into the ranks of the enemy was a death worthy of my favorite Magyar.

Merry Christmas all - be blessed and find peace this holiday season, and into the New Year.

Game is still on life support. Sorry for the delay. Soon we'll be running again. After we get some things squared away I have a nice game arc planned out. Took me long enough.
