Re: An Emmisary

Medved sighs and nods his head..."I guess as the son of the Voivod that it is my duty to make contact...though I was hoping you wanted to do it."

As they ride closer Medved hold up his hand and speaks in near perfect Greek..."Hail up ahead! I have come from Khorsun...I am to meet an emisarry here on the road is it you good sir knight?"

Re: An Emmisary

In reply to Medved (msg # 10):

The cataphract looks up, gestures off-handedly to his squire, who steps around behind the tent, and then calls out:

"Christos Anesti!"

as he waves to you, smiles broadly, and very casually steps forward to pick up his large scarlet teardrop shield, marked with a golden Chi Rho.

"Who comes from Khorsun, and calls for an emissary?"

Re: An Emmisary

Heinrich raises a hand in greeting and replies, "I am Heinrich, sent from Khorsun and the Voivod to help speed your safe passage any way I can. That is if you are the one we are sent to meet. If you are not, then we can at least speak of how things are on the road."

He ends with a smile, and waits for a reply. He also left things open for Medved to add anything he wants, and conceal his identity if he wants to as well.

In reply to Heinrich (msg # 12):

As he moves closer to his horse, and runs his hand through it's mane, the cataphract says, "I am Rogatus Mandromenos, Mandator of the Strategos and Emperor in Exile Bardas Phokas, and Kataphraktoi of his Oikos.  It is I whom you seek."

"The road has been quiet, why do you come from the governor armed in such fashion, and who are your companions?"

Re: An Emmisary

Medved sits high in his saddle and calls out..."I am Medved, son of Miroslav the Voivod of Khorsun. We were sent to escort you as my companion has said. We bring a number of man at arms since the road can sometimes be dangerous. There are Pechenegs about that have been known to attack smaller parties."

Re: An Emmisary

Heinrich grins and calls out, "You never know when you are going to get a surprise. And we wanted to be prepared....and I also tend to forget where I put things down so I keep everything close."

He then waits to see how serious the emissary takes all this.

In reply to Heinrich (msg # 15):

"Hail and well met, Medved Miroslavich to you and all your companions!" says Rogatus with a formal bow.

"I apologize for the meanness of my humble camp for someone of such high station, but you are welcome..."

Rogatus makes a sweeping gesture, and invites the group to his camp.  Nonetheless, you notice that he is keeping a shrewd eye on everyone's movements and positioning.  He does not put down his arms, although his words and tone are gracious.

Re: An Emmisary

Heinrich hops off his horse, and moves to tie off his horse to a convenient spot nearby. While he makes the horse comfortable, he doesn't unhook the saddle yet, or make things difficult if they have to leave quickly. He motions for the guardsmen accompanying them to survey the area (hoping they can decipher his meaning and go for it).

He then motions Medved to join the emissary, and replies with a grin, "For a camp on the road traveling at speed, I have seen far worse. How has your journey been so far?"

Heinrich remains alert, his eyes sweeping the area and looking for any sign of danger or deception.

Re: An Emmisary

In reply to Heinrich (msg # 19):

"Please sit and enjoy what meager hospitality I can provide..." says Rogatus, motioning Medved and Heinrich to take places by his fire.

Then, he calls out, "Niko! Bring our guests refreshments for their journey!"

(A young squire steps out from behind the tent, putting down his horse bow (which had an arrow nocked), and scurries to the supplies.)

Rogatus puts down his shield as well, and sits by the fire after allowing Medved to choose his spot and sit first.

"My journey has been surprisingly quiet, I must say,"  says Rogatus with a smile, "I was expecting more... excitement, considering my charge."

"Your journey has been quiet as well, I take it?  I see no evidence that you encountered unwelcome 'companions'..."

The young man shakes his head..."Our journey was uneventful and hopefully our trip back to Khorsun will be the same. If you do not mind our company for the night, it would be best that we head for Khorsun at daybreak...Heinrich, you agree?"

Heinrich nods to Medved's suggestion, and says, "I think that sounds excellent. We can relax a bit, post a strong guard, and head back tomorrow."
He looks back to Rogatus, and asks, "And how was your journey? Any news of interest from the west?"

He is already laying out in his mind the guard schedule for the night, keeping at least 2 up at all times.

In reply to Heinrich (msg # 22):

"Continuing the journey tomorrow would be most welcome!" replies Rogatus, "I am excited to present my case and begin negotiations for my lord as soon as reasonably possible."

"As for the East, my travels through Anatolia from Chios were uneventful, but I hear that the Assassin and so-called Emperor still continues his war in Mesopotamia..."

Re: An Emmisary

In reply to Heinrich (msg # 24):

"Ah- I understand!  I am sure that the false emperor has made every effort to suppress the truth in any case...  As I am in the presence of my lord the son of the Voivod, I will acquaint you with the facts:"

"My Lord Phokas was a great and loyal general of the empire (as was all his family) until the usurpation of the throne.  It was then that he led his tagmata against the Assassin- who to his great shame is his cousin."

"My Lord Phokas is a brave man, mighty of arm, with a sharp eye, and wise in the way of battle.  He possesses great vitality and can take in the true nature of something in the wink of an eye."

"Nonetheless, he was defeated by the combined forces of the Assassin and his lackey, Bardas Skleros.  He and all his family have been exiled to the island of Chios- though he has sworn that one day he will meet Skleros again on the field of battle, where he will feel the might of my lord's sword arm."

"In the meantime, I travel on embassy to seek allies for the future.  Though I am sure that there are those who would have me fail on my mission before it truly begins..."

Heinrich nods and says, "We will stay wary on the road. And we have the numbers to keep two on watch throughout the night. So we will do everything we can to get you to negotiate in one piece. Medved's presence here should show how serious we are about that. Getting back to your ord, what sort of forces remain under his control?"

In reply to Heinrich (msg # 26):

"Sadly, just his Oikos..." Rogatus says with a sigh, "Although the Oikos of a Strategos is formidable!"

"Still, my lord believes that he can command the loyalty of several of the Mesopotamian Themes, but the timing must be well chosen, as in all things in this dissolute reign of the Tzimiskes."

Rogatus turns his head to the side and spits on the ground.

"My apologies."

Young Medved shakes his head..."No need to apologize, the Emperor John is no friend to our city. He has tried to have my father killed on several occasions and even invaded our home but the gods protect us from his evil. You and my father will get along well if your hatred is as strong as it seems."

Re: An Emmisary

Moving on...

The night is unseasonably warm and the four men stay up relatively late chatting well into the wee hours of the morning. With the safety of the provided watch they are able to get a few hours of sleep.

When they awake they are greeted with a hearty breakfast crafted by not only the knights squire but by one of the footman who bolsters the supplies with fresh cheese and apples brought from Khorsun. A small cask of green wine is also opened.

(nerd alert....green wine is wine that is not aged. For some reason in the Russian tales this is the preferred drink of heroes.)

"Very well my new friends!" says Rogatus with a smile, "I am sure you know of a tavern with a fine wine cellar in Khorsun?"

"Let us wager a bottle each of their best.  The loser to provide, of course..."

"I wager that I will be the first to touch the gate at Khorsun- although I have the disadvantage of having to follow you two," he says with a wink.

"And of course, we shall make it by this evening.  Is that even in question?"
