Ragnar tries to drop his bow and pull his sword from the cross-shoulder sheath.  He fails miserably, the bowstring entangling with the hilt protruding over his shoulder.

Re: The Lower Darkshrouds
The beast, delighted at the relatively minor damage taken thus far, charges the prone form of Pompey.  In its haste to attack, the three heads fail to effectively communicate, and the good Father is scored a glancing blow from the goat head.

-2 dmg to Pompey.  Party's actions, please.

Tired of being gored, clawed, and burned, Pompey rolls to his feet and chops down at the beast with all his strength.

07:13, Today: Father Pompey rolled 19,7 using 1d20+2,1d12+2. Pompey attacks chimera.

Marroar will once more fire his magical missiles at the beast, at least it was an effective tactic. He'd alter his course next time.

Borya once again launches himself at the three headed beast. He holds his buckler  straight out to guard himself as he hacks this way and that with his hand axe.

Re: The Lower Darkshrouds
Pompey rolls from the butting head of the goat, swings his sword from a prone position (really, you're going to hop to your feet in armor like a ballerina?  LOL!) and whacks the beastie's snout, bloodying it in the process.  Borya charges from the flank, offers a couple of swats to the dragon's head, opposite the goat, and scores a nifty nick on the neck.

Marroar, quick with his magic missiles, fires for more bolts directly toward the lion's head, scoring a quartet of scalding wounds.  As the fourth missile burns into the beast's flesh, the smell of burnt hair and meat fills the entry chamber.  All three head's bleat, growl and rumble in desperate fashion, then the beast shudders and falls, and lies prone, eyes staring blindly from spell-forged heads.

From the shadows in the back of the room come the glistening of coin, and the pale bones of past meals.

ooc: wow...you guys are a tough lot.  Well played!  I'll save a bit of roleplaying - treasure as follows:

3240gp, 560pp
16 gems
a ring
a wand
one arrow
one vial filled with liquid
one bone scroll tube w/ a rolled parchment within.

Re: The Lower Darkshrouds
Pompey, weighed down by his armor, crawls to his knees and then to his feet.
"As graceful as a ballerina, my friends, eh?"

He then checks the den, making sure there are no other surprises, and opens the scrollcase to look at the parchment inside.

Re: The Lower Darkshrouds
Within the scrollcase crawls a small black spider that spins a silken web and drifts off into the shadows.  Pulling the parchment, you find it is actually a rare vellum made of some sort of skin.  Upon the scroll are glyphs of a decidedly arcane style.

Pompey frowns at the scroll and turns to his companions. "Marroar, I think this may be to your liking," he says, handing the scroll to the spellcaster.

Re: The Lower Darkshrouds
As the party watches, the creature, mystical, begins to dissolve into a nebulous form.  A wisp of foul odor rises from the corpse as the magical energies dissolve.  In the space of about a minute, the huge beast slowly disappears...eventually, all that is left is a darkish liquid that spreads in a 10' radius where the body fell.

The place stinks, but is completely quiet at this point.

ooc: outside of counting treasure, what do you guys want to do?

Staying away from the dissolved creature, Pompey searches the rest of the room before venturing over to the door on the right wall and listening.
Can he see up the steps from that position?

ooc: you may want the others to chime in, but yes, any portals seem open, and stairs seem unused and dusty.  Other than the entryway, which seemed to serve as the chimera's lair.  At least as far as you explore, anyway.

Marroar will take the scroll and give it a look, as well as the other items, if need be, when the group rests, Marroar will memorize his identify spell so they may learn about the objects. Otherwise, Marroar suggests double checking the hideout for anymore unforeseen creatures, beasts or bad guys.

Borya collects his spear from the puddle of goo that was once the mighty chimera. Once he has it cleaned off he will look through the structure to see if there is any other danger about...but what could live alongside such a beast?

Re: The Lower Darkshrouds
For Borya, Ragnar and Marroar, the search is of a familiar haunt, and they offer glances to one another of shared memories of battles won.

As for the keep, it has fallen into disrepair, though habitable.  The well still draws potable water, the kitchen still holds usable pots and pans, along with a stove.

The double doors to the entry way seem to be in working order - off in the corner is the thick wood used to bar the portal, and though squeaky, the hinges still seem in good repair.

All in all, it seems a comfortable home, despite the smell which already seems to be disbursing.

ooc: seems made to order...party's actions.

[Private to Marroar Silentread: you vaguely recall hints of hidden rooms or some such from the first adventure here...]

Marroar will continue to search, his mind not quite settled that they'd seen everything. "Borya, Ragnar... do either of you recall any hidden rooms? I can't place them, but my mind seems to wander back to the possibility."

Ragnar shakes his head.  "It has been too long, though I must wonder if the chimera was here of its own accord or merely a guard for a master who had secreted away valuable treasure."  He had been practicing drawing his sword several times to ensure he never again tangled it with his bowstring.  Being useless in the fight was embarassing enough, but to look a fool while doing so....

Re: The Lower Darkshrouds
The party settles into the mountain fastness.  There's some debate whether to draw close the double doors nor leave them open - prudence wins out, they close and bar the doors leading into the entryway.

The straw mattresses are usable enough - and the kitchen as well as the well (as was mentioned).

ooc: at this point, setting up a base of operations becomes a bit more than saying - yes, we'll set up a base here...I'd like to get some details, including where the party is spending most of its time.

Oh, and the smell of chimera fades until barely noticeable...but every now and again, you can still catch a taste of the beastie on the air...

Three weeks pass.  Your supplies are getting low, although they are buttressed with Ragnar and Borya's hunting skills.  Father Pompey calls for divine aid betimes and meals are further supplemented by his Master's good will.

Still, y'all are getting antsy...

Marroar will set about the task of cleaning the place, washing out the feces and such as best he can... it had to go after all. General house keeping type things to begin, Borya and Ragnar likely knew better how to fortify the place.

Borya spend much of his time either hunting with Ragnar or collecting firewood. He is more than a little handy with his hatchet and will use his second axe more as a tool than a weapon and use it on firewood and on repairs.

In the evening he does his best to entertain his comrades by playing his lyre and singing, inviting the others to join him on songs they know.

Ragnar will hunt in the dawn and evening twilights, patrolling the area and looking for any hint of enemy activity.  Enjoying his time hunting with Borya, he exchanges tidbits of trail lore, finding the barbarian's techniques intriguingly different from his own.  He will participate in the services to Heironeous as well.  He grew up in an ecumenical tribe:  they worshipped many gods.... and when he was consorted to the paladin, he joined her services. And now the Valorous Knight.  He wasn't sure what his afterlife was going to be, but he knew that THIS life needed healing and protection and the Valorous Knight was a worthy deity.

Re: The Lower Darkshrouds
In the weeks of waiting - interminable - Marroar spends hours wandering through the stronghold.  To his surprise, he manages to find a couple of hidden portals, including an escape hatch to the cliff overlooking the forest and lake below.  Along the shore of the lake he could see the sparkle of minerals embedded in the rock reflecting the sun's light.

He recalls such in their last visit to the place - here was the egress sought by the drowess who'd caused them some harm.

Casually, he wondered where the wench was, if she'd survived the Giantish wars...

He was disappointed to find no hidden gewgaws or magic items...but it was a relief to know they had a bolt hole if necessary.

(Please see new map of the stronghold the smaller portion is the loft above the main entrance).

ooc: opening a new thread for your adventuring pleasure.
