I'll get to an update.  I'm trying to wind this adventure up soon, so you'll have a bit of combat, resolve the situation, and then you can get your characters to more profitable region.

Re: Moonsea -- OOC #2!

Quite honestly, DM Kool, if you are stretched for time and don't have the resources to prepare the rest of the campaign, I'm perfectly fine with cutting it short, if the other players are okay with that too.  An adventure that isn't done properly isn't worth doing at all; and rather than drag it out over a few more weeks, with you too busy to enjoy it and us not having the benefit of your full attention as DM, maybe we should just throw in the towel.  This isn't intended as criticism of you, by the way - my schedule has weeks when I barely sleep, let alone have time to play online - merely as a suggestion.  We're here to have fun.  If we aren't having fun, let's reconsider our options.

I can get this done quickly if I don't bother to bring the new player in.  He hasn't done anything anyway, and he won't get anything out of this.  I'll tell him to look for another game to join.  I should be able to toss out some combat for you soon, I'll just need to work it up.  I should have an update within the next 24 hours, I'm too tired right now to do calculations.

1+2+3+4=10, so level 5 is 10,000.

On a completely related note, how did you, as a half-drow, seal with getting xp after reducing LA?  I assume you just act afterwards like you never had it.  My sister seems to think otherwise.

Level Adjustment - though unlike their full-blooded cousins, half-drow do not have any Level Adjustment.

Now, since Kool will be leaving soon, we'll begin work on finding a new DM for this region - we'll keep you updated on how that goes, and if you've got any questions about it, feel free to send a PM to DM BadCatMan and I, either here or in the OOC forum.

As far as I've understood. Half-Drow's are just like other half-elves, only darker of skin. They do have dark-vision, but so do dwarves. That can hardly be reason for level adjustment.

Re: Moonsea -- OOC #2!

in black and white...

Experience Point Cost
Each time a character's level adjustment is eligible to be reduced, the character may pay an XP cost to take advantage of the reduction. The character must pay an amount of XP equal to (his current ECL -1) × 1,000. This amount is immediately deducted from the character's XP total. The deduction should reduce the character's effective character level (ECL) by 1. (If this deduction would not reduce the character's ECL by 1, the character's XP total is set at the maximum of the level below his current ECL instead.) This XP cost can't be reversed in any way, and the payment must be voluntary on the part of the character. The payment must be made immediately upon becoming eligible to reduce the character's level adjustment.

For instance, a 2nd-level gnoll fighter (ECL 5) who later gains a third class level has a minimum of 15,000 XP (his ECL has just gone from 5 to 6). He is eligible to reduce his level adjustment from +1 to +0. He must pay 5,000 XP, since his ECL is now 6 (2 Hit Dice plus 3 class levels plus his +1 level adjustment). After he pays the XP, his level adjustment decreases by 1 to +0. He now has 10,000 XP. His ECL falls to 5 (2 Hit Dice plus 3 class levels). Even if the XP payment would not reduce him to 5th level—for instance, if his XP total after reaching 6th level were 20,000 or more—his XP total can't remain above the maximum for 5th level, which is 10,000. Effectively, the gnoll has "paid off" his level adjustment with an XP cost, and he is now a 5th-level character.

Similarly, a drow cleric who has just reached 6th level (ECL 8) is eligible to reduce her level adjustment from +2 to +1. She must pay 7,000 XP, and her ECL becomes 7 (6 class levels plus her +1 level adjustment). When she gains her 9th class level (ECL 10), she can reduce her level adjustment to +0 (and her ECL to 9) by paying another 9,000 XP.

On the surface, this tradeoff may look like a bad deal. The drow cleric has now sacrificed 16,000 experience points, putting her behind her comrades in total class levels. Now, however, she progresses as if she had never had a level adjustment. With the self-correcting nature of the experience point system, she will soon catch up to the rest of her party, and will reach 20th level after earning a total of 206,000 XP (190,000 plus the 16,000 in XP costs). If she had not used this variant system, she would have had to amass 231,000 XP to reach her 20th class level (which is ECL 22 for a normal drow with a +2 level adjustment).

Hope that helps... Pretty simple to me actually.  The longer you wait the more it costs you.  And you would go on as if nothing happened afterwards.

Re: Moonsea -- OOC #2!

Actually, I had to read it to figure out my question: at what amounts of experience do you gain levels?  I figure paragraph 2 explains that, particularly the first line.

When you have level adjustment, you gain XP by how much needed total for your ECL, not how much more you need for your next level.  Even if your ECL starts at 4 and you have 0xp, you still need to get 10,000xp before you gain your next level, not 4,000xp more.

DM Kool:
Even if your ECL starts at 4 and you have 0xp

That's impossible - if you have an ECL of 4, you will have a minimum of 6,000 XPs, since that's the minimum for a fourth-level character.  Doesn't matter if you just have one class level and a Level Adjustment of +3 (like, say, Avariel, or Svirfneblin), or a simply four class levels.  Then, from the 6,000 you started at, you'd need 4,000 more to reach the next level, at a total of 10,000 XPs.

Re: Moonsea -- OOC #2!

Okay, that puts it in a different light.  With that view, there is no question, no dispute.

Wait, there still is: Those who start with 3,000xp here(like my main character) but have +1 LA, don't know whether it takes 5,000 or 6,000xp to get to level 3(ECL 4).  With the explanations I have been seeing, it takes the full 6,000.

The reason I thought 0xp is because I was in a 2nd ed tabletop game with a friend, and he had us start level 3 with 0xp.

Re: Moonsea -- OOC #2!

The XP charts doesn't change because of Level Adjustment:

 ECL      XPs Needed
  1            0
  2          1,000
  3          3,000
  4          6,000
  5         10,000
  6         15,000
  7         21,000
  8         28,000
  9         36,000
 10         45,000
       etc.

So, a second-level character with a Level Adjustment of +1, would have 3,000 XPs, and reach his next level at 6,000 XPs.  Then it'd be 10,000 XPs, 15,000 XPs, and so on.  Hope that made things clearer?

Re: Moonsea -- OOC #2!

ECL is Effective Character Level.  So the LA +1 makes anyones ECL 1 higher.  and just DM Anni said you a character of that level.  A Hu Sor 3 is ECL 3, while a Assimar Sor 2 is ECL 3 (+1 for the LA for all the goodies they get, and then 2 levels of the class they picked)  To get to level 3 I think by the way you are talking Kool is they would need 6,000 exp, but that will make them a ECL 4 then.

or is that more confusing to this whole thing, lol.  I can help with the monsters if you would like, I am really good with that stuff, and wont use the player info, just to help you out, or by the looks of it Anni could, I bet all you would have to do is ask...

Yeah, I'm posing the question to the sages, since in the table it says +1 = 1000 gp, but looking up the cost of a +1 weapon = cost of MW weapon + 2000 gp, so...

Corrected: armor upgrade costs 1000, weapons 2000 gold. I still manage to get most of my upgrades, just need to prioritize before nailing it down.

My bad, no, it's just one of the mysteries of the world.  You ever heard the saying 'The GM is always right'?  Even if they change their mind, even if that would result in the impossible, they still are and always were right.

Meaning, you were 40ft away before, now you're 60ft away, and no, you didn't move backwards.

No, the spot/listen/search rolls were the prior round (in which Garath uses his senses to figure out what's going on).  The current round is after the prior round's rolls were resolved.

Re: Moonsea -- OOC #2!

Quinlan Fairfellow:
Kool, some feedback:
When you actually posted, the adventure moved forward with some ease, but the pauses where far too many and too long. I understand you have a busy schedule, but find it ironic that I: father of two and highly trained scientist working across the globe, should find more time to log on every week and post a few lines.
You winged the plot well; it wasn't epic, but not dull either. However, try to plan ahead some more. It makes the players feel like you care a little for the campaign.

Best of luck in the future DM'ing!

Well, put plain and simply, the one reason I'm not a good GM is, that I'm not reliable.  I'm too much of a procrastinator, and too reluctant to do the work.  I can do it, fairly easily, and it's not bad, but I have trouble making myself sit down and work on it, like with everything else in my life.  May have something to do with my ADHD.

Anyway, I'll try to finish this in a round or two.  I've got some twists that could end it quick, and drop it to a few story posts, which I can keep up with, because it's all off the top of my head(like the conversation with the guard captain, if you remember).
