Aboard The Horn, Talisandre 620

You reach the windship, docked at the Green Tower, where Ceramose busily oversees the loading and unloading of cargo.

A few words from Peregrinus and Wraith Zephyr gets the group up to the dock, with the Captain.

Re: Aboard The Horn, Talisandre 620

”Ahoy, Captain! I return!” The Zandir stood, chest out, hands on his hips. Legs turned just so as the light from the suns caught the tip of his pommel and glittered magnificently. Kolarios knew this because he checked. Twice. ”Kind Captain, we come on a Quest of Utmost Importance and, to be quite honest, one in which you are already privy for was it not your kindly intervention that placed me on this path for yon noble Kasmiran’s safety and security. I believe so. And so it is that I return with strange and unforeseen companions, quite strange in some respects. Who would have guessed that I, Kolarios, would have discovered a trail that so surely points in the direction of the foul fiends that beset us in the past. But… I have! And so I am here to request a minor thing, trifle really. Apparently, we are to find some fangs and give them to Golarin. Who is he? I know not and yet, that is not important. All that matters is that I, loyal swordsman of Zanth, do what is needed. Yes-no?”

Re: Aboard The Horn, Talisandre 620

In reply to Kolarios Viramos (msg #3):

Aalistair tried to lean closer to Kolarios in an attempt to whisper a few corrections to him. The bobbing of the ship next to the tower was not only disconcerting, it was distracting. He tried using his staff to prop himself up, but when the metal-tipped butt threatened to gouge the smoothly polished surface of the deck, he jerked it up, over-balances and wobbles once more.

"Hssst," he whispers. "The Fangs of Golarin. It's a place. Surely the Captain knows of it. Some hundred or two miles westwards of here."

Whether it is the sudden silence of the creaking of the ship or the momentary cessation of the wind is anyone's guess, but the whisper carries much farther than it should.

He smiles, nods to Mirna, "I don't believe I've before made your acquaintance? I am Ceramose, captain of this fine vessel. How may I be of assistance?"

"As this brave woman states, we seek the Hand of Fate. We have a heading that we believe shall lead us to the vessel. And a... ah... a recovery crew that should mean that there will be little danger to you or your possessions. We just need to get to the craft as quickly as possible."

It wasn't entirely a lie, but he'd still ask Aa for forgiveness later. He hoped that he capabilities of this band of adventurers would be able to retake this recalcitrant windship without harm to anyone else. Well, to anyone else who didn't deserve it.

"Do all windships bob about like this," he whispers questioningly to himself.

"I see. I may be able to assist. I cannot ask too much from my crew. As Mr. Viramos here can attest to, we have already once had a run in with the Wind of Fate, and it was nearly catastrophic. If not for the quick thinking and heroism of my crew, the Rajans would now have another windship. While I am all for the taking of this windship, and dispatching these wretched thugs, I must, after all, look after the interests of my own 'ship's owners, and above all, make certain that their windship is not taken or destroyed."

He smiles, pauses and looks at you thoughtfully. "Wraith, yes, I have seen your skills, and have full confidence in your piloting skills. But thirty or forty Rajans are another story altogether. As for my service," he smiles again, as if calling up memories, "I served aboard the Windship of War, the Garde of Pharos. We did have some glorious days, my companions and I," he muses.

"In any event, if transportation is all you need, we may be able to come to some arrangement."

He considers a bit, then continues, "Assuming we can make an arrangement, my crew needs time to exchange goods and supplies, and some rest after their ordeals. We can be prepared to go tomorrow morning, if you'd like."

"Indeed, welcome aboard." He nods to one of the crewmen, "Lacus can show you where you will bunk and store your gear." He turns back towards Zosha and Nas, "I've some additional preparations to make, we set sail shortly. You can greet the remainder of your crew and get them settled as they board." He smiles and moves to watch over the preparations.

Zosha stands, reviewing some papers in her hands, which riffle in a light wind.

"Hail," she calls, a quiet growl rumbling under her words. "May I... Come aboard?"

Surely, I can not be expected to lay my head on this infested thing! An adventurer such as myself must be ensured of good dreams and solid slumber if my blade is to be puissant!” He looked around and realized that everyone had grown quiet, eyebrows had arched and open smiling was beginning to cross the faces of the crew. He squinted dangerously and a mischievous smile creased his cheeks. ”Ahhh… tomfoolery of a base kind! Let it be known that I will see you all gain a modicum of balance, eh, of justice on this here trip.” He turned and grumbled his way back under the deck of the ship.

Aalistair turns slightly. He nods once to the Cymrilian. "Two reasons." He holds a single finger as he says, "A large band of Beastmen wiped out an entire caravan of pilgrims not too long ago. Their trail, too, heads towards the Fangs. If the Rajani and the Beastmen are in collusion, then it could mean many more deaths lie ahead. Perhaps even our own."

He lowers his finger. "As to the second." He takes in a deep shaky breath. "How many Aamanian air-men have you met? Seen? Heard of?" He holds up a hand to forestall speech. "No, it does not matter. The number is few enough. We do not easily take to the air. The heavens above are the realm of the long dead saints and illuminaries and of course beneficent Aa Himself. We were not born with wings like the Gryph, the Aeriad, or the Stryx. I will not go as far as some of my brethren and say that flight like this for men like us is a blasphemy, but the fact remains that it is an unsettling, unusual, and uneasy thing for man used to the firm rock of Aa's greatest creation under his feet."

Having been given permission to walk onto the ship, J'landria leans forward but hesitates. She sees a few of her new friends on board and she moves forward. Her tail swishes with some internal agitation and her expression is strangely closed as she walks up the gangplank. When she reaches the deck she approaches Aalistair and Kar. She smiles at them, but the smile doesn't quite meet her eyes.

"It is... new... for me as well Aalistair," she says with another twitch of the tip of her tail. The tip dances and taps on Kar's leg and with a serious look she reaches down and grasps at her tail, pulling it up in her hands and holding it while the tip continues to twitch. After a few deep breaths the tail stops dancing and she lets it go and she smiles again, this time more genuinely.

To Kar, he says:
"Aa the All-Generative puts everything in its place, Kar. You have feet because you must. But, should you see a fish winging its way across the sky, would you think it strange? Or a shrubbery, swimming far out at sea? Or rather, might I say, does a small drac lingering beside a water hole where predators come to drink cry out that its death is unfair? Aa places each thing where it will best grow." He smiles, slightly. "For most of us, that place is upon the ground."

He nods to J'landria while turning to Wraith.

"I am sorry for your friend's loss. We in Aaman are taught that we are tested daily by Aa. Our resolve, our faith, our trust, our ... love. Aye, some tests are small. We might easily pass a score a day and never notice. All might hinge on one. We may never know what our actions resolve, but Aa sees all and knows all." He bows his head slightly.

"As to my ability aboard this...," he swallows visibly. "...ship. Well, that is a test that remains before me. Do we depart soon?"

Wraith sings an old airman shanty to himself, galvanized by the fact that he's at the helm of a ship. It's been awhile since he's had the opportunity to sail, and he's forgotten how much peace it engenders within him. After a moment or two of awkwardness and getting-used-to, he grows accustomed to the ship's steerage; he lashes his hair behind his head with a black iron clasp, preventing it from streaming across his face and obscuring his vision.

"There isn't much to tell." he begins, his voice taking on a flat and distant timbre. "My parents and litter-mate were murdered when I was a young cub. That's where I acquired this scar." he adds, absently tracing his scar with a claw.

His voice takes on a harder edge as he continues, "I say murdered because it was a deliberate attack on my parents, although no one has ever been able to determine why the humans, and I mean Archaens and not the Rajan or the Wild Races, wanted my family dead. Somehow I managed to survive the assassins' attack. From that point on I dedicated my life to pursuing criminals, particularly humans. I probably would have ended up in the career I chose anyway, but I was quickly "adopted" and trained by another Manhunter. This Jaka also despised men, for reasons of his own, but he recognized my anger and hatred and he fed it, and then used it to control me. He took advantage of my pain and tricked me into doing many things I later regretted. It was several years before I realized I was being used by my mentor." After a long silence he shakes his mane in the wind and his voice takes on a resigned tone, "But that matter was settled a long time ago and I've since let go of the anger and the pain." At this point Jaxar stops speaking, and something in his manner indicates he has nothing more to say on the matter.

"Now, Mr. Zephyr," he starts up in a more normal tone, "can you talk me through that maneuver you just performed? And then maybe we can figure out what to start training our new crew of Marukans in."

It is a good day for learning windsailing, as the wind is light, and it is a headwind to boot. Progress is slow, but Wraith is able to find a good wind and keep The Horn moving in an easterly direction.

The day passes fairly pleasantly. The suns shine brightly, in spite of the coolness of the day. Once or twice, sailing batrancs are spotted, but they do not fly near or threaten the windship.

OOC: Some free interaction time. In the next day or two, I'll have things put together for the arrival at the Fangs. Feel free to use this time to talk among yourselves and the crew, or to learn a bit about airsailing.

Coming up for air (and to attempt to count heads again), Aalistair overhears the captain's words.

"How visible are we from a distance," he asks. "While we can hope that they are not expecting us, and our height might provide some advantage against some forces on the sweet beloved ground, I agree that a brash approach might bring disaster." He tries to peer off into the distance as if he can see the Fangs far away. "Let me ponder this, and perhaps ask Aa for a blessing as well."

Aalistair will find as stable a point aboardship as he can, perhaps near the mast if it is not too busy. Pulling out a small book of faithful prayers, illuminated with images of Aamanian saints and notaries, he will kneel in prayer.

"Beneficient Aa, granter of grace and power, if I your humble servant am worthy in your eyes, fill me now with the ability to enact your greater will."
Attempt to cast Blessing of Aa's Holy Grace, modified roll of a 1. Failure. Unless Aa intervenes with some bonus.
"All-seeing Aa, if this humble vessel be worthy, reveal unto me the plans and powers of vile foes that we labor against."
Attempt to cast Aa's Guiding Grace, modified roll of a 0. Critical Failure. Unless Aa intervenes with some bonus.

After remaining on his knees for an hour or more, Aalistair sighs softly and pulls himself upright.

"I fear we are on our own, good folk. Something hides our future path from my sight. Perhaps the feared powers of these black-hearted worshippers of Death are set against me."

"Where Aa is silent, perhaps the Zodar will speak," responds Athellin, and setting himself in Aalistair's place begins a long shuffling of his Zodar deck, dealing cards out, and reshuffling them for quite some time, before finally speaking.

"Most curious. Again, I remind all present, when the Zodar speaks, its advice is best heeded, though it does not deign to explain itself." He stretches, then continues, "We fly east during the night, until Jhang's sickle breaks the horizon, then we part ways with our fine hosts. We must then carefully, and very quietly, make our way east, until we spot our quarry." He looks inquisitive, almost confused, as he looks up again, first at Callianos, then Jaxar and J'landria, and briefly, at the others of the band gathered. "I say, can you fly?"

Although I have not seen many windships I do not believe I have seen any that were physically on the ground. The need to fly could refer to the fact that we will need to get aboard a windship that is, at the least floating above the ground, and possibly moving."

The suns set, and full night encloses The Horn. The coming of night brings cold, chill air, a reminder of the lateness of the season.

The night deepens, but the captain puts out only the most minimal lights on deck, and those he has shielded so they do not shine directly forward. With those, and the light of the full silver moon, it is just possible for an experienced sailor to find their way around.

On the eastern horizon, the blood red horn of Jhang's crescent thrusts upwards.

Coming up in time to hear J'landria's words, Aalistair peers off into the darkness. Seeing nothing, he moves up on to the deck and finds something sturdy to sit himself near.

"So, we believe that the ship we seek is somehow moored to one of the Fangs? And that they are indeed working with the Beastmen?" He takes a deep breath, thinking for a moment.

"I suppose our first order is to re-acquire the other ship, yes? Though we may like to strike at the Beastmen, that is secondary. Too, if we sieze the other ship, the Beastmen will have less opportunity to strike at us." He looks around the ship for a moment, his eyes slightly unfocused.

"Aside from Kar with his natural gifts, do any of you capable of altering nature have the ability to make yourself fly? Or conceal yourself or others? Perhaps in such a way we might enable a small force to board the other ship - either as a pre-emptive strike or while others of us create a diversion." He shrugs.

"Either way, am I correct in assuming that the other ship is our main priority here?"

"I would be willing to help provide a distraction. In the dark, it would be hard to tell I am a Jaka if we make my cloak stand out like open wings," she says quietly from where she stands. "I do not think I would be much use on the windship for I do not understand its moving or working."

In reply to Kar (msg #134):

"Exactly how stationary is the other ship? Can anyone tell how far off the ground it may be? Beastmen, while seeming to prefer swords and axes and spears, do occasionally use bows. That may mean getting the other ship at least several hundred feet up." The Aamanian looks a little queasy as he says this last bit while keeping his eyes firmly on one individual or another.

"If we use the flying potion... Well, I confess I have never flown before. How difficult is it for those of us not born to it?" He looks from Wraith to Kar. "How fast will we be able to go? How high? For how long? Would it be best to attempt to drop like a shrike? Or stay low to avoid detection then swoop up to the deck of the ship?" He makes some vague hand motions to try and illustrate his questions.

"Too, if we get ten to twelve of us over there... we will need, effectively, two teams. One shall have to hold off the Rajani and perhaps some of the Beastmen while the second will need to get the ship airborne and moving, yes?" He looks back to Wraith and around and the crew.

"How much protection will the air crew need while getting the ship untied and upwards?"

"You ask very pertinent questions, Aalistiar," says Wraith, dragging his fingers across his chin. "The speed of the ship obviously is contingent upon the wind, the condition of its levitational, and the amount of cargo that's stowed in its hull." He peers out in the direction of their target and says, "I know a spell that could enable me to enhance the speed of the ship. It will require a tremendous amount of concentration and focus on my part, which will be hindered by the fact that I will also be tasked with piloting." He looks around at the group. "We're definitely going to need to get in and get and out as quickly as possible. If this devolves into melee, we're done for." He exhales loudly folds his arms across his chest. "Unless . . . if we could possibly force the Rajans off the ship by creating a diversion, perhaps I could move the ship away from it's mooring with magic. I don't know if this will work, but it might be worth a try."

"I may be able to help in that respect. Aa willing, that is. Or else, dropped before we reach the Beastmen, I could possibly create a diversion in their ranks. Aa occasionally blesses me with the ability to sway the minds and moods of the weak-willed to accomplish His goals. I might be able to sway a few Beastmen or a pair of the Rajani to turn against their evil brethren."

He shakes his head.

"Against the numbers we may be facing, however, that would only be a short-lived diversion at best." He smiles as if at a little joke. "While I believe that Aa brings each soul to its ultimate end, I would hope that none of ours lies before us this night."

Looking over the group he continues, "The attack would still be one of stealth, at least until the alarm was raised. Either way, we would need to get the Fate underway before the beastmen had a chance to board or attck at range. Kar, J'landria, could you please describe their positioning again to see if this plan is even feasible? Is the windship on the ground or floating? How far away are the beastmen from the ship? Two clawed fingers are up, with a thumb almost as if she's going to pinch something in the air. She grunts "ship" while pointing to her thumb. Then she makes a fist and holds it up a little way away from the 'fangs' and 'fate' and grunts "beastmen... North"

She looks at Jaxar and sighs. She lowers her fist and holds up a finger.

"Last I saw, we were about here," she says while moving her finger in a circle. Then she puts her fist back in place.

The winds become little more than whispers across the deck as the windship slows to nearly a full stop, drifting slightly, its sails flapping idly in the breezes.

Ceramose steps beside your little group, looking gravely out to the horizon, where the crescent of Jhang has risen over the rim. "It's not too late to abandon the whole thing, try some other time, or just go home," he says. "Yet, I don't think I would dissuade you. Still, now it is time to determine your plan of action; come with me, to my next stop, where I can let you off in some safety, or pursue your windship. We cannot lay becalmed here all night."

OOC: At a conservative estimate, if you could reach the Fate discretely, you would have 5 to 10 rounds to deal with getting it under way before having to worry about Beastmen getting near enough to be a problem. That's assuming that the Beastmen would respond in some immediate way. They may not even care...

Wraith fully unsheathes his sword, and an eerie strand of lightening scuttles up the length of its cloud-soaked blade. "As much as I'd love to test this weapon's mettle on a Rajan cur, I think it would prudent of us to avoid mixing it up in close quarters as much as possible."

”I say, this is damned dreary, ya hear?” Kolarios rolled over on the cot, wiping his mouth for the hundredth time. He looked over at the stricken Gypsy near him. ”Tis not that I begrudge your companionship, fine sir. Merely that, while I have certainly enjoyed losing much monies and precious coin to your finely painted cards and interesting game with the ever-changing rules, and I do feel that I am coming close to grasping said intricacies of the play, I was born to be whirling my blade around and rescuing woman!” His face grimaced for a moment and he looked around quickly. ”Non-wrinkly, preferably beautiful women, that is. I say, the Ten Thousand are surely mocking me for some failure of my own… nyeah, it must be celestial intervention by powers nefarious.”

The sound of retching from Callianos caused his eyebrows to waggle and a slow smile to appear on his face. ”Ahhh… it would seem my thought-smithing has provoked an offensive response in the entities that afflict us… They fear my knowledge of their evil work. Obviously, this is a matter for some more thinking. Ouch, even the word makes my brainpan ache. But, I, Kolarios, shall strive through the pain, Callianos. Never fear, I will find us a way out of this predicament. Eh… Callianos, are you awake? Hmmm… it seems some coins have dropped beneath your bed. Why, look at that! Zandir coins! And I seem to be missing some of my own. I must thank you sir, for safekeeping these during my convalescence. Thank you indeed.” Kolarios leaned backwards, rested his head and closed his eyes.

”Now to some famed, and justly feared, Kolarios Viramos plotting.”

Re: Aboard The Horn, 32 Talisandre 620

In conclusion to Kolarios' enthralling narrative, Callianos emits a light snore. He appears to be sleeping. Is he simply mocking the Zandir? No, he's not so foolish, he must be truly sleeping. The illness clearly is more telling on one lacking Kolarios' heroic constitution.

Kolarios' countryman Lacus then enters the bunkroom, a wide grin splitting his face. "Ah, Kolarios, I see you have revived!" He leans in closely, sniffs, and backs away slightly before continuing in a conspiratorial whisper, "I have spread the story that it is diabolical agencies that may have struck you down, so other would not perhaps think that a Zandir could not hold his liquor."

He stands back up, "You appear to be recovering nicely. It seems you will go to any length to remain in my company. Not that I can blame you. Perhaps after exercising some hygiene you'd care to join us on deck?"

Re: Aboard The Horn, 32 Talisandre 620

”Bah!” Kolarios waved his hand weakly in Lacus’ direction as the man headed back up and swung over to drop his feet on the floor. Hygiene? Kolarios looked under his arms and noted a strange smell that he had earlier attributed to Callianos. How odd, he noted. ”Aye, I could do with a bit of refreshment!” He stomped over to the bucket of water hanging on a hook and dumped the entirety of it over his head.

It can truly be said that Zandir, Kolarios noted, were extremely fast and fashionable dressers. It was no more than a few moments before he strode up on the deck, a bit weak at first but gaining in confidence with each step, smelling like a perfumed alleycat and looking decidedly unrumpled and suave. He stopped for a moment to cast a look around for a reflective surface and then shrugged when he did not find one.

”As if I should worry,” he chuckled to himself. ”I say, Lacus!. Where are you, brute?”

"I say, my good man, no need to shout," a quiet voice says from behind Kolarios into his ear. He turns to find a grinning Lacus behind him.

"We're awaiting the return of your friends, and making ready to move on. If they are going to return, it should be soon."

Kolarios stretched a bit and yawned. ”Certes, I deem they may have suffered magnificently without my stout arm! I fear for their lives… can we go see them? Maybe now?” He smiled at Lacus. ”I don’t wait well, see, a curse and a blessing; the quicksilver in my brainpan and swordarm!”

He shakes his head, sadly. "The captain forbids it. He won't put the ship and crew in jeopardy, much as I'd like to stain my blade with the blood of those Rajan fiends. It should not be long now, though."

Kar:
"Thank you. I should also warn you that I am not the only one in the skies this morning. We had some trouble after the initial recovery from...something that I can only call a shadowbeast. No substatial mass, removed only by light, or magic. The rest of the Fate's crew have disptched of it, but I thought it fair to warn you."

Peregrinus nods, "Then we shall have to be prepared, and have the remainder of your crew ready in short order. If you will excuse me, I'll get them ready for you." He begins shouting orders, and the Marukans are hustled together, getting ready to to disembark for the Wind of Fate.

Re: Aboard The Horn, 33 Talisandre 620

Kolarios nearly fell over the gunwale as the ‘Fate’ grew nearer. He started bouncing up and down only to realize that this brought the dizzies back. He took a few steps backwards and then saw the white flag go up. ”Why, I do believe they’re surrendering! Hah!” He slugged Lacus in the arm. ”What did I tell you? The fame and fear of my blade spreads far indeed. Why, I think that…” his voice trailed off as a winged form launched its way over to the Horn. He quickly recognized Kar and cocked his head. ”I say, this is odd. They have sent one of their hostages over to parley.”

As Kar hit the deck and spoke with Peregrinius, Kolarios rushed over and reached out to grab the Gryph. Seeing that there was really no way to latch onto the Gryph without getting a handful of feathers, he dutifully clasped his hands behind his back. ”Was there torture? What are their demands.” He squinted his eyes and looked out at the windship. ”Those Rajan bastards… they’ll not have my friends. Quickly, fly me over there and I shall put an end to this!”

"An end, indeed. The beginning and all important middle have been claimed by those who could hold their weapons,"
and with humor, "and their liquor."

"In all seriousness, if you've any experience in the healing arts, you may be welcome indeed."

As Peregrinus, the first mate, begins calling out orders, the Zandir bows to his fellow countryman and the Gryph. "That would be my call to duty, good sirs. I must away immediately, in compensation for the impression some here have acquired that we Zandir are layabouts who cannot handle our drink!" He rushes off, casting a rope to the Fate, and fetching a plank to use as a causeway between the two windships.

The Marukans complete their disembarkation, filing over with their meager belongings to the Fate.

Ceramose, walking by Kolarios, jibes, "It all appears safe, if you'd like to join your friends!"

Kolarios spun on the Captain with a retort and then shrugged. He smiled to the Gryph and bowed at the waist. ”I am, of course, skilled in, um, rudimentary battle ministry… I confess to some ability although note an emphasis on ‘some’.” He hiked up his sword on his belt and headed over to the gangplank. A quick toss of the head averted the possibility of discovering whether he was, or was not, completely and pathologically terrified of the astounding heights at which they now soared. He congratulated himself on ascertaining the possible threat and avoiding it, this thought and the congratulations took up enough time that he made it over the intervening distance between the two ships before his eyes caught up to his brain.

Captain Ceramose calls from the deck of the Horn as Kolarios departs. "I fear you may have stirred up a hornets' nest! We will away now! Best wishes, until we meet again!"

With that, the plank is withdrawn, the ropes disengaged, and the Horn begins to pull away, heading towards the south, moving swiftly and smoothly under the hands of her capable crew.

The Zandir aboard the Horn waves and calls back to Kolarios, pointing to the silver moon Talisandre, associated with luck, "Yes, may Fortuna shine luck upon you as well, my countryman!"

Could it be he did not hear his fellow Zandir clearly?
