Chapter Two:  Choices

As three months have passed, you are each individually contacted by the ISPD for questioning.  However, when you arrive for the dreaded interrogation, you notice that there is a human dressed entirely in white with the agent, and at times, he cuts off questions, or asks his own.  As you explain what happened, you get the sense that it could have been much worse if the man in white was not around.

The ordeal over, you return to your lives, waiting for a new mission.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

As things have progressed over the short reprieve, you are all finally summoned to Vespar, the capital of the domain of House Sarava.  Regannos's father has called for you all for a company meeting in a memo to each of you.

Jouhan returns from his travels, while Vorneyl appears to have been deep in training for this period of time.  Sister Aria works for a master mechanist, testing new vehicles of the mans design, while he helped to craft her person project.  Of Regannos himself...little can be said...

The Imperial Portal network is well run, with secure check points throughout the domains of each House.  It would take only a couple of hours to go through the check points and arrive for the meeting.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Jouhan returns from a mysterious sabatical holiday which he had requested from Regannos after receiving his payment and agreed he returns month later. At outward appearance he has not changed much at all nor anything was different about him. Expect he now sported three exotic tattoos in his body; one looked like purple stripped green cat over his left arm. A black unicorn over his right arm and snake eatting it's own tail in his chest.

Second which was different that his old metal stick which produced the blade before which is Jouhan's signature weapon has been replaced more exotic and fancier looking handle and was much longer than his old one.

http://www.freewebs.com/lights...t/SaberStaffHilt.JPG

After his return he mostly meditated and spend his days as usual until call came and along with others followed meet with Regannos father, curious about the summons. He studies the checkpoints, trying see how strict security is and hoping the guards do not grow suspicious regarding his metal rod. Most security teams recognize blaster, but almost none recognize the blade handle and most would mock lethal effect of close combat weapon in era of blasters.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

A powerful metallic feline bounds down the Long Highway. Sister Aria was returning from two weeks leave back home on Telamon III, in the Osorus Domain. She had spent nearly three months working for the aerospace division of Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith, testing out prototype craft. The work had been nerve-wracking, but the experience had honed her piloting skills to a fine edge, and access to the aristocorps' manufactorum had been vital in the design and construction of Kit-10, her signature vehicle.

With the robot's instruments feeding directly into her nervous system through her datalink, the mercenary pilot could 'feel' the vehicle's legs pumping as it ate up the last few klicks to the meeting. Once she finished the long trip from Telamon to Thormorath, it was a short trip to the capital of Sarava. Heavy security at the border of the Blue and Gold Domains notwithstanding. Fortunately, Aria was meticulous about her records and paperwork.

She was pleased when she 'saw' Jouhan through her sensors. She was ready for some excitement that wasn't of the 'I hope this ship doesn't blow up when I test the thruster' type. Besides, a merc can't make her name as a test pilot.

The black metallic cat loped up to Jouhan, servo motors whirring almost imperceptively as it stood upon it's hind legs, shoulders widening as it transformed into humanoid mode. The robot's arms moved stiffly to it's side, appearing to stand at attention as chest plates shifted and swung open.

A bag of shock-absorbing gel deflated to reveal the diminutive pilot curled into a fetal position in the vehicle's chest. Aria extended her legs, stretching them a moment before dropping to the ground. The cat's chest whirred closed as it dropped to all fours on it's haunches.

"Mister Calader." She says as the approaches the psionic warrior. "Good so see you again."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Vorneyl pondered the odd interaction and interplay between the ISPD officers and the agent for whom he supposed was the Mithril Watchers.  Just what sort of game were they playing between them, and more importantly just how were Vorneyl, his employer, and his teammates involved.  Vorneyl wasn't too keen on being anyone's "pawn" but that seemed to be his lot in life lately.  Then again the Empire all its citizens have always been "play things" tossed about back and forth during power grabs between the rival Dragon Houses.

Vorneyl is not bothered by the checkpoints.  He's used to Imperial bureaucratic "red tape" and security procedures.  As long as one had all the proper permits and papers in order, there shouldn't be a problem.  And holding a personal summons from Regannos's father to Vespar wasn't a bad "passport" either.  Of course none of that would matter if the ISPD or someone else was determined to make trouble.  The word "legitimate" only applied when one had sufficient power and/or influence to backup one's assertion of "rights".

Vorneyl looked pretty much as he did before, except his choice of armor was fancier and he was sporting a few added pieces of "magic bling" to supplement his appearance and performance.  There was a certain added swagger to his step, no doubt an increase in confidence in his already capable talents and perhaps an added dash of perfection to his prized skill set.

Vorneyl spotted Jouhan, noting the new tattoos but his attention was mostly focused on the odd cat-bot apparently being piloted by Aria.  With a shrug of his shoulder and a small shake of his head, Vorneyl approached the pair with swiftness but undeniable stealth in each casual footfall.

With a crooked smile, Vorneyl said, "Well Aria... it sure looks like you weren't idle much during our brief break from work.  What sort of "fuel economy" can you get out of the ol' girl... or perhaps this particular metallic feline isn't actually feminine?

And its nice to see you as well Jouhan.  I didn't realize you were one to go in for "body art"... but as tats go, they're not bad.  I see you've upgraded your sword hilt... does its new blade match the increased length of its handle?

Speaking of the gang being all here, has anyone spotted the Boss yet?  I hope Regannos hasn't gotten in trouble with his ol' Pop... I still find it hard to believe how much fuss was made over the last job.  I guess that serves me right for not being overly religious to begin with."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

A short time after Vorneyl entered the Vespar side of the Long Highway, the gathering group could see the tall shape of Regannos slowly approaching, and from the wrong direction. Perhaps less unique looking given the the situation, it was easy enough to spot the slight differences in his face and the way he moved as he got closer. Rather then wearing his armor, he was dressed in a long robe in the trappings of House Sarava. The heavy pendant he wore that donated his status as a noble within the Draconic Hierarchy had a golden edge to it now, an emerald set in the center of the pendant.

Regannos had vanished with good reason, and reasons that had not needed to be revealed until this point. Striding up to his former guards, like to be his guards again, his hands folding into the wide sleeves of his heavy robe. "I see you all made it here safely" he said as he gave a nod to each of them in turn, "I do apologize for vanishing on you as I did, but certain events required me to return to Vespar. My Father is waiting."

His words were formal, if terse. Turning on his heel, he clearly expected the others to follow him.

Vorneyl chuckled a light metallic chuckle as he followed behind Regannos.  With a shrug of his shoulders, he glanced back at the others and said in an amused tone, "Well that's one heckava succinct "how do ya do"... guess the question & answer period will have to wait until later."

Vorneyl turned back to look at Regannos as he said in a more serious tone, "Hey no problem Boss, I imagine we all have our reasons for going our separate ways after that last doozy of a job.

And speaking of which... are we all still under a "cloud" because of that?  I don't suppose you could tell me if we're likely to be facing additional "fall out" over those events, eh Boss?"

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Jouhan was tense at first upon seeing the metallic feline, tense and curious. He has some fascination to felines so he admired the beauty of the structure of the feline. Then he could not be more surprised when he sees cat go humanoid form, stand on attention before him and chest open and reveal Sister Aria!

When Sister Aria makes her greetings Jouhan nods to her and relaxes and replies; "Same words to you Sister Aria. I see your time in your home has been fruitful. Is your feline merely exotic transport but is it also a combat model?"

Then Vorneyl comes in and points out his tattoos, which were quite visible thanks besides wearing his usual pants he was topless for moment. But team knows he has somewhere in person a solidfied liquid purple jelly sphere which he can place on his chest and it would rapidly cover top half of his body for protection. Also his new blade handle came to discussion so he replies to Vorneyl; "Well, I thought decorate my body little while away but these tattoos hold store of power which can be useful in specific circumstances. Also my blade handle is kind of preconigtion, as in near future I am able conjure blade which demands a more exotic handle. But for now I know only old forms which I knew before and I also can split handle into two sepparated handles to each hand. No, I haven't seen boss yet."

Then Regannos shows up and Jouhan silently nods to him and starts follow him when he starts to lead. Not knowing customs he trusts what Regannos is doing and best avoid cultural conflict he is silent and patient. Observing his surroundings in basic alert stage and he even slides down his goggles to increase accuracy of the data his eyes will be seeing.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

As the group follows Regannos into the corporate headquarters of Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith, you notice that the security is quite prevalent.  It appears as if they are trying to look their best.  Regannos is recognized on sight, and quickly allowed to proceed with his companions to an elevator to the board rooms.

When you enter the board room, you notice four people already in attendance.  The most obvious is the older looking Half-Dragon, wearing resplendent robes of silver-grey.  The second is a robed figure, who appears to have two swords strapped to his back.  The third is a human wearing Imperial Navy combat fatigues, with long black hair streaked with silver.  The last is a human clad in shock armor, with a military buzz cut, and a scar running down his right eye.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Vorneyl's gaze passed over the first two individuals, assuming the 1/2 dragon to be related to Regannos and the robe wearing sword user to be someone whose expertise probably didn't mesh with Vorneyl's own.  Instead Vorneyl focused on the Imperial Navy type and the human with the military haircut and "battle decoration" (ie scar).  These two were more likely to be the types Vorneyl, as a veteran ex-Legionnaire, would be most familiar with.

Vorneyl remained uncharacteristically silent as he figured this was neither the time nor place for him to speak.  This was Regannos's father's "party" and the 1/2 dragons appeared to be calling all the shots at the moment.  If the Team was meant to know who these 3 other people were, they would learn soon enough... good ol' "need to know".

Vorneyl kept to one side of Regannos, only a step or so behind him, with his gun hand free and ready... not that he expected to need to draw his weapon (if he did then things had really "hit the fan").  Instead Vorneyl remained quietly alert and observed events as they unfolded.  Though he did try to keep sight of Regannos within his peripheral vision, wondering what and how much his ol' Boss knew about what was really going on... as well as trying to gauge just how much "in the dark" the Boss was like the rest of them.

Aria took a belt hanging from her cat's saddle and strapped her cavalry sabre to her hip before accompanying the group inside. She walked a bit behind Vorneyl, allowing him his prefered role of paranoid guardian. Once in the board room, she stands at ease, her hands clasped behind her back.

While her body remained motionless, her eyes scanned the images of the officers and executives before her. The mercenary sent the image to her datapad, and began a search routine to find out as much as possible about the four of them.

The Half-Dragon smiles at you, gesturing for you to take your seats.  It appears Regannos is the one to do the briefing, though, as the older half-dragon takes the seat to listen to Regannos speech.  The white-robed figure pulls back the cowl of his robes, revealing the features of a drow male.  Solid blue orbs instead of the usual white look over each of you briefly, before turning to consider Regannos.  Silver runes are etched around his eyes, his hair cleanly cut in a semi-military fashioned flat top.  Both of the military types look over each of you briefly, before turning to listen to Regannos.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Regannos was uncharacteristically silent during the short walk to the corporate headquarters, his hands folding inside of his robes. He gave an apathetic nod to the guards who stood mostly on display in-front of the main lobby, his face remaining stoic even on the elevator ride upwards.

As he entered the board room with the others, he first paused at the door to give a bow towards the other 'half-dragon', words spoken softly were very easily heard by those behind him as "Opsola." The draconic word was familiar enough as to be recognized for "Father".

"Allow me to introduce Captain D'Arville" he said in a somewhat louder tone to his companions as he first indicated the Human in the naval uniform and then armored figure, "and Commander Karde. They are here as consultants and attaché for Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith's new interests."

With the introductions made, and the 4th robed figure with the swords left rather unnamed, Regannos took his place to the left of his Father and motioning for the others to take their own seats. Remaining standing while the others sat, Regannos seemed to take a moment too compose his thoughts before tapping a finger against the smooth stone conference table. The room lights dimmed as a holographic representation of the galaxy sprung to life in the center of the room.

"The current state of Dragon Empire is considered stable, and with the new decree of expansionism set forth by Emperor Mezzenbone, raw resources are at all all time high" The admission seemed to come out just a little strained, perhaps his words would have been a little more condescending a few months prior. "However, there in lies the problem. Because of the relative security of the Core, the desire for privatized security has been slowly dropping off over the last 200 years or so. Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith's own profit margins have been slowly been eaten away by upstart companies that are far less trained then our own operatives, but charge less by the same token. Obviously we cannot do the same, there are certain expectations that come with being an Aristocorp, and Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith has always kept above those standards." As he spoke, Regannos gave a nod to his Father and a slight smile before continuing with the presentation.

Tapping the desk again, the display shifted, an overlay of the House partitions of unknown space filtering over the galactic display. Along with tags popping up to show the relative points of Draconus and the other Core worlds. "As few companies outside the Core could afford our services on the long time contracts that the Aristocorp requires to sustain a proper profit margin, we must start looking into alternate avenues of security." With another tap, several colorful lines wormed there ways outwards from the Core worlds into the Outlands, several sections flashing red.

"While few threats could stand up to the Imperial Armada, nor the resources used to secure new words, the space between these new worlds has become a nest of privateers and pirates. It is impossible for the Armada, much less the Legion, to guard every new trade route that snakes its way through the Outlands to the Core. I do not need to remind anyone here that the Core requires this influx of resources to continue as we do. As it stands, there are relatively few Aristocorps and even less independent mercenaries that offer to guard interplanetary travel. As it stands, most shipping companies rely on the Legion for help, and it is well known they are often overstressed and often react far too late to prevent significant loss of cargo."

With those words, the display slowly vanished as Regannos finished with the words "Beyond the gravity wells of the planets, there lies a great deal of potential in both removing a strain on the Empire, as well as profit for Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith. As a speculation venture, a ship has been commissioned for this particular venture. I would be present as a representative for the Aristocorp and its interests, as well as acting commander in terms of missions taken or refused. Captain D'Arville will provide his expertise in naval warfare and transport, were as Commander Karde will lend his abilities in information gathering and mission planning" he gave a wave of his hand to Vorneyl, Aria and Jouhan "And I requested the three of you as members of the crew given your track record and proven ability. Should we succeed, and there is no reason we would not, this venture could provide the capital needed for Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith to create its own fleet of interstellar vessels."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Vorneyl raised his hand casually and asked in an interested tone, "So if I get this straight Boss, you're basically saying we're going to play escort as a sort of "caravan guard" for trans-planetary/trans-system shipping with the occasional bout of good ol' "pirate hunting"... is that right?

So is it expected that most of our action is going to take place in space with potential ship-to-ship boarding actions?

Do you have a projection for what percentage of the time we'll be playing nurse maid to nervous merchants and what percentage of the time we'll be given the green light to go on the offensive to hunt down the pirates?  I imagine the latter option will require fairly extensive intel gathering and planning, but could potentially take us ground-side for assaults on covert pirate bases."

Vorneyl paused before continuing, "On a different note... where's our profit mainly be derived from in this scenario?  Is it mainly from the fees charged for escort paid by the big shipping firms?  Or are we also perhaps getting a "grant" from the Imperial government, perhaps paid out of the Legion's budget, for taking on these duties and thus freeing up official Imperial resources for continued outward expansion & occupation?

Additionally, can we claim a piece of the prize-money?  I mean when we take down a pirate or privateer, who gets to claim their goodies like their ships or weapons/gear or even their technical/intelligence data for the local systems?"

Vorneyl paused again to glance back at the Capt. & Cmdr. as he added, "Speaking of which... what sort of "official authority" are we being granted to pursue these pirates in Imperial or Outland space?  Will we be operating under actual "officially recognized" authority within Imperial law to pursue these pirates and privateers, taking the fight to them as it were?

Are Capt. D'Arville and Cmdr. Karde our official "liaisons" with the Imperial Navy & Imperial Legion... or are they no longer formally in Imperial service and now working strictly for you Boss?"

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

After taking her seat, Aria sat virtualy motionless with her hands folded on the table in front of her as her Half-Dragon made his statement. The young mercenary would have been satisfied with hearing simply "We are going to be flying escort missions in the Outlands," but she understood that the nobles of Qesemet meant such speeches as a measure of respect to their employees. The blue rulers of her home in Osorus tended to be more blunt to their underlings. Still, as long as all parties held to the terms of their contracts, Sister Aria cared little about the philosophical differences between the Iron and Gold Kingdoms.

Also, Regannos was likely trying to look his best in front of his father. Obviously a large amount of capital was at stake in this venture, and his fortune in Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith would rise or fall with it's success. Or lack thereof. If Aria had had any questions, Vornyl asked them and more. Besdies the question of looting rights, the details of the Aristocorps' finances had little concern to her. She was tempted to just zone out of the conference and take Kit-10 for a spin remotely, but that wouldn't be professional. Instead, she left her masterpiece creation at its station outside the Aristocorps' headquarters and contented herself with skimming any tidbits of interest she could find on the Net about Captain D'Arville and Commander Karde.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Standing up, Captain D'Arville clears his throat.  "According to the Expanded Imperial Charter, the Silverwing had much of its armaments removed for non-military sale.  However, we still have a decent amount of defensive capabilities in the area of weaponry.  I am your official contact within the Imperial Navy, semi-retired of course.  Accordingly, part of our contract with your company is that every effort is made to return stolen goods to its owners prior to legal confiscation.  Spacecraft...unless stolen, are for the company to decide their fate.  In regards to your other questions, a small portion of the Imperial budget foes to fund these en devours, enough that it is reasonable for companies to pursue the vocation of pirate hunters.  This new venture operates under Imperial Law in regards to bounties, privateering, and anti-piracy codes."  With that, he takes his seat.

Now Commander Karde stands up, taking a measured look at you all, particularly the drow at the table.  "My team and I are no longer a part of the Imperial Legions.  We mustered out about a year ago.  My unit is assigned to provide protection, deflection, and distraction to your missions.  I will be honest, we all hail from Arissia, a fringe planet only within the last decade having been...acquired by the Domain of the Blue Dragons.  The Wild Karde's are eager to show what we can do, and the best way to do that is by partnering with an organization such as Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith.  He finished, he takes his seat.

Finally, Lord Aggreagan stands to address the room.  "As you can see, our new venture is one of expansion and possible adventure, everything that...well, that our company has hoped for, for some time.  In order to better facilitate this new venture, I have hired a new member for your team.  I present to you Kalic Vorniir, a knight of the church and a historian of no small ability.  I trust that he will provide a reasonable new addition to your team.

[Private to Sister Aria:  Of Captain D'Arville, you find numerous commendations for his services within the Imperial Navy, not much more.  Of Commander Karde and his Wilde Karde's, however provide a little more information.  The entire group hails from the same newly conquered world of Arissia.  They have some positive feedback from their previous employers, except one.  It appears they cut one of the contracts from a military corporation.]

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Jouhan like Sister Aria was silent about whole converse. His own order was rather neutral regarding matters of piracy, of course prefering it does not exchist but he would need do more ground work than usual to check there is none his brothers or sisters in crew. As their kind tend to inflitrate around to gather information in some long term missions.

Also soemthing.....distant part of him.....grew excited about the concept of hunting pirates. But same distant part made Jouhan reveal one his rarest facial features; slight frown, upon seeing the drow in table and more so when heard it would join the crew.

I do not like him....but I do not know why.

Whole life Jouhan is haunted some odd memories, sensations or thougths which he knows were once part of him but has been on purpose.....muted. He knew there was reason for it and he should ignore them. But as he cannot stop his breathing he cannot stop from feeling. It's eternal subject in his order is the perfect servant a emotionless? A person who feels only pure serenity with no anger, malice or dislike or like? Or should person embrace positiive emotions despite it also brings negative ones too?

Either way he lets others talk and let him ponder and observe in silence. So far he had nothing offense against working different margins than before.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Vorneyl noted the Captain and the Commander, perhaps taking slightly longer to size up the Commander as a fellow veteran ex-Legionnaire.  He merely nodded his head in silent understanding and tacit approval.

Hmm... might want to chat with Karde later on, compare Legion campaign notes.  I wonder if we shared any battlefields during my tenure in the Legion?

However the Drow really caught Vorneyl's attention and perhaps not for the better.  Of course it is hard to read a Soulmech, emotions don't really get reflected well in their artificial facial features and their artificial glowing visual sensors lack the expressiveness of organic eyes.

Vorneyl stared at the Drow for a few moments before speaking aloud in a cautiously curious tone, "Ahh yeah... a "Drow Paladin"... can't say I've run into many of them before, Blackguards sure... Paladins, not so much.

So Vorniir... the Unification Church is a big organization, lots of deities and a fairly wide spread of core beliefs among them.  Just which 1 of the 12 gods have you pledged your devout service to and what is the name of the actual Order you loyally belong to?

Or... are you perhaps a Paladin of the Spider Goddess, whom I believe is counted as possessing the dual aspects of both Destroyer and Mother?"

This Vorniir is certainly an interesting addition... I wonder... a concession perhaps to the ISPD to get them to stop breathing so hard down our necks for simply doing our jobs?

Kalic raises an eyebrow, snarling slightly when you mention the Spider Goddess.  "I do not devote myself to any one deity of the Church, believing that the principle on the whole is more valuable than dissecting it to oblivion.  I align myself with the positive aspects of the church, Love, Life, Justice, Creation, while respecting the other aspects as valid and natural causalities of the universe.  What is Life without eventual Death?  Creation without Destruction?  Magic without Technology?  Justice without Crime?  Perhaps most of all, what is the meaning of our lives, without Love?  I hope, that despite my race, that you will grant me some consideration for my talents."  He spoke, looking almost directly into the mechanical eyes of the Soul Mech.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Vorneyl chortled slightly (with an electronic echo in his voice) as he shrugged and said in a bemused but resigned tone, "Well now Vorniir... that sure is a pretty speech, but it doesn't exactly answer either of my questions.

If you're not specifically devoted to one of the twelve Unification Deities, then why not just become a Dualist and be done with it?  I believe The Creator counts all those nice sentiments within his portfolio.  But I suppose such religious philosophizing is a topic of discussion better suited for another time and place.  After all, your choice of god or gods is your business.

That said... you didn't mention which, if any, Paladin Order you belong to.  Of course I realize that not every paladin is a member of a specific Order.  I'm just wondering if you have any special association with say... SOLAR (Special Outlands Army Recon), the RMS (Royal Marshal Service), Task Force Sanctuary, or The Celestial Guard?  If not, so be it.

Regarding your race as well as your talents, you can be sure I'm granting you plenty of consideration.

Perhaps you're not aware, but Lord Regannos and his team, of which I am a member, had a "minor" unexpected run-in with the ISPD (Imperial Special Police Directorate) not too long ago.  I'm sure I don't need to tell you who, or rather which race, primarily runs the ISPD... so pardon my curiosity about you Vorniir but I don't think it is entirely unjustified given recent events."

Vorneyl shrugged again as he added in a casual tone, "But seeing as you're on the Team in any case, I'm sure it'll all work out one way or another."

Kalic examines you for a moment, before shrugging off your comments.  "I do not belong to any order, since I do not devote myself to any of those deities specifically.  If I had to choose, I would choose the Lover, due to my love of art.  Anyways, I was unaware of your groups troubles with the ISPD, but I will count that as a bonus to working with you.  They abuse their power far too much for my liking.  In time, I hope that they spread the candidacy for the ISPD, but I do not think that will happen for some time..."  He spoke, looking at the others of the group for issues with him.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

The mercenary pilot barely moved her head to look towards Kalic as she speaks. "As long as your personal beliefs do not interfere with the performance of your duties, I feel no need to analyze your philosophies."

Her eyes look towards Vorneyl for a moment before turning back to the Drow, "I would ask you to keep in mind, though, that Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith is undertaking this venture for profit, not an instrument to confront the injustices of the Empire."

Aria's concerns were probably the direct opposite of Vorneyl's. Her concern was that overzealous devotion to any diety, particularly those aligned with 'good', could lead to more ISPD scrutiny than a Reaper cultist. From what little she knew of Drow society, refusing to follow the teaching of the Spider Goddess in itself would draw unwanted attention.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

When Kalic mentioned not knowing about the ISPD trouble, Vorneyl glanced briefly over at Regannos and his father before returning his gaze to the Drow.

With a shrug of his shoulders, Vorneyl said in a nonchalant tone, "Well I hope I didn't let the "cat out of the bag" vis-a-vis the ISPD, but then again if you're going to be working with us you ought to know everything you're stepping into.

That said, as Sister Aria just mentioned, Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith is essentially, when you get right down to it, a business.  We're not doing this for our health or as part of a moral code or even out of a concern for the common good... we take on jobs to make a profit, the bigger the profit the better.

Now while we may have had a run-in with the ISPD, it wasn't planned nor was it looked for nor relished.  I'd just as soon not have another meeting with them if at all possible to avoid.  But like it or not, we're on their "radar" at the moment or so it would seem... at least until we either slip off it or something bigger comes along to grab their attention.

And... however they use their power, they have a lot of Imperial "juice" backing them up and from what I remember of my Legionnaire days, that power only gets weightier out on the frontier of the Outlands.  The less we can do to attract that sort of unwanted attention the better, official backing or not."

Regannos's father clears his throat, speaking up.  "Be that as it may, perhaps a little morality in our dealings would be more appropriate.  Part of the reason why I hired Kalic was to provide a little more positive motivation to the groups working, not to mention his extensive works for various factions within the Unification Church.  Anyways, I shall leave you all to decide the next step for the company."  He spoke, excusing himself from the table.

A few messages are pending your review.

"Greetings and salutations.  I am Renfar Inoma, Chief Researcher of Quantum Physics and Arcane Dynamics in the Imperial Society of Arcane Magic.  Recently a disturbance has caught our attention in a remote fringe world, where time and space appear to be fluctuating.  We need to discover why this is so, and perhaps establish a permanent research facility on location to continue beyond our initial frame of study.  I eagerly await your response."

"The Smith's blessings upon ye!  My name is Roruk Torin, Acquirer of the Dwarven Commonwealth in exile.  I have recently uncovered some clues to the whereabouts of the famed Soulforge, said to be the site where the Smith helped to create all life in the cosmos.  If we of the Commonwealth where to bring this discovery to light, perhaps it would give my people hope for a better future.  I look forward to your reply."

"Good evening.  We of the Necropolis Society are seeking transportation and protection while we research a recently discovered planet with a significant undead presence.  We are seeking help in establish a staging area to conduct our research planet side, with possible exploration of ruined cities.  We appreciate your time, and would be pleased to hear your acceptance of our mission."

It appears there are a few candidates for your first mission.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Vorneyl listened to the proposals and considered both the needs of the proposed missions as well as the expertise reflected among the current team.

Vorneyl glanced over at Regannos and said, "Well Boss, while I'm wary of dabbling in more "religious matters" again... I gotta say that the 2nd job offer, the one from Mr. Torin dealing with the Soulforge, appeals to me the most.

I don't mind the 1st job offer from Dr. Inoma and it might be nice to get an "in" with the ISAM... but I'm a bit wary about all the mysterious unknowns disturbing time & space.  It sounds a bit "egg heady" for our respective talents, though perhaps Sister Aria might like the technical aspect of the assignment.

I am really not comfortable with the Necropolis Society job offer.  I don't know, maybe it is because, as a Soulmech, I'm not all that far away from being "undead" but I would prefer not to deal an entire planet full of undead.  Now the one plus side is the opportunity to loot... I mean "explore" the ruined cities, they might have some interesting items in them.  But I'm not sure it is worth the risk.

The 2nd job offer though has more of an exploratory element to it and, while it deals with religious myths, the essential job aspects seem pretty grounded... as long as Mr. Inoma can actually ID the Soulforge he's looking for.  The other benefit is that a success on a job like this could gain us and Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith so really good press... good PR is bound to generate additional attractive job offers.

But I realize that you're the Boss, so the final decision probably rests with you.  I just thought I'd share my impressions on the offers currently on the table."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Regannos listened to all of this, preferring not to get involved quite yet. As it was, he knew enough about the newest arrival from his dosser. Rather, given his status as the defacto leader, he knew that he had to make sure not to show preference among others under his command.

Rather, he gave a nod to his Sire as he left, rather aware that the schedule for a full-bloodied dragon could be rather packed. "I would have to agree that the offer from the Necropolis Society would likely be a last resort. As it stands, Sarava has never had quite good relations with the undead. Which leaves the offer from the Commonwealth and the Imperial Society of Arcane Magic. Both have their obvious advantages. Personally, I would prefer to take the request from the Imperial Society, given my own interest in magic, such as it is."

Argos had his other reasons to be intrigued from such a disturbance, they were rare of course and the idea of anything disturbing space and time at large was intriguing to the Half-Dragon. "With that said, I would like to hear everyone's comments about the offers we have available before making a final choice."

Jouhan has been silent, when Regannos asks for his opinion he replies; "My abilities would be hampered while figthing against undead. Not useless but less effective so that mission would be less ideal for me.

The mission regarding the Soulforge is interesting expedittion and looks promising. But I have doubts is it so easy to find and is the clue perhaps false? Or that there is something our employer does not tell about dangers in reaching the soulforge.

The mission regarding investigate the area where time and space are fluctuating and help establishing research station sounds something perhaps out of our league but then again our task is to guard against threats so who knows what dangers research team may face. As such unstable area could randomly conjure things out of time and space to scientists and attack them or pirates attempt attack them and steal goods. I am fine with this task so long we do not get direct contact with the phemomemon.

Either way, I could suspect there is competition from other companies to the Soulforge and the time and space research tasks, but no better way prove our skills as company than face those odds and succeed."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

"Hmmm... How unfortunate," Sister Aria says with a sigh, "I find the Necropolis Society's offer to be the most interesting. Tombs, after all, are often known to contain all manner of valuable grave goods. Exactly unlike spatial anomalies, which are notorious for their disinterest in gathering large piles of treasure. Also, it's likely that with the proper containment procedures, our ship could serve as a useful fallback position should the situation SNAFU on the planet's surface. Again, the anomaly is not likely to offer us the same safety net."

"Those reasons, along with the unpredictability of anomalies in general, makes the Imperial Society's offer rank last in my assessment."
The mercenary adds, "I also have a distaste for problems that cannot be solved with a well-aimed round, and I haven't found an effective weapon for combating time and space."

"The Soulforge intrigues me, with the possibility for encountering some very interesting loot. And of the three, I believe our particular skill-sets may be best served with the Dwarven Commonwealth."
The mercenary's eyes travel to each of her teammates as she concludes, "As something of a craftsperson myself, I should warn you that mechanics do not react kindly to other's using their tools unbidden, and making off with the Smith's toolbox while he's away could be a quick way to earn the wrath of a God."

Captain Sebastian takes his time in considering what exactly his opinions are.  "I happen to agree with your mercenary friend.  The Silverwing is fit for travel, and as a base of operations for a research mission.  A question about the Soulforge would be is it even movable?  I imagine such a place would be set by its creator for future use...  Another point your friend brought up is that although the Necropolis Society is a sub group of the Imperial Society for Arcane Magic, it must follow Imperial Laws."

Commander Karde speaks next.  "Aye.  My team are not spellcasters or mechanics.  We are definitely more a physical solution to a problem.  Give us targets, and we will take em down.  Ultimately, it is your choice, and we follow."  He spoke, looking at Regannos.

After a long period of consideration from the group and his own thoughts on the matter, Regannos tapped one of his claws against the surface of the conference table in thought. As much as he believed that the Necropolis Society would follow the Imperial laws, the fact was he had to think about the reputation of the company at large. Showing direct involvement within such things could bring a deal of negative press, and while there was no such thing as Bad PR, it could still reflect negatively at the end.

"I understand and appreciate the comments that have been given. However, the best chance for Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith to gain attention for this new venture, and thus our new avenues for clientele would be to take the offer from the Imperial Society of Arcane Magic. It may not be the most....active assignment for us to take, but on our first voyage, I would not like to risk our new equipment with out need."

Giving a nod to the others he added "I will make the arrangements. Please keep yourself available for departure as soon as possible."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

If the Soulmech could still breath, he would probably be sighing right now.  Vorneyl had never liked dealing with "unknowns" in fields he was not even vaguely versed in and this ISAM assignment seemed jammed pack with unknowns in areas Vorneyl has no knowledge of whatsoever.  Still at least this was better than being forged to tangle with batches and batches of undead.

But the Boss was the Boss and he'd made his decision (that's why he got paid the big coin) and Vorneyl would just have to live with it one way or another (well as much as a soulmech could ever be said to "live" with anything).

With a small shrug of his shoulders, Vorneyl accepted the final call by the Boss and waited for the next stage in the assignment.  Perhaps the type of threat they were going to face would be further clarified in the mission briefing... Vorneyl just hoped there was something he could actually contribute to this assignment.

Aria taps her finger on the board room table in a rare show of irritation. Waiting until the door closes behind the captain and commander, she rises from her seat. "I'd like permission to speak freely, sir."

Without waiting for permission to be given or denied, the mercenary continues. Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Regannos waited for Aria to finish speaking, leaning back into his chair some and looking across the width of the table at her. He hadn't shown any outward signs of his emotions at her choice of words, his finger tips tapping against one another a little bit. The silence would stretch onwards for a moment before he at last leaned forward and started to respond. "I wish things were as black and white as you may think Aria. What matters in this case is not what the task is...but who it is for, and what we can make of it." Rising from his seat, the Half-Dragon trailed his fingers along the smooth surface of the table, walking a few short steps over to look out the window to the city beyond the tower.

"Everything that is done, even for me, is at the whim of my Sire and his Kin. For the look and view of the company, and the standing of my Clan" He added, tone soft, possibly even sad sounding. Though it quickly formed up shortly after that moment. "As you said, I do not have to explain myself to you. But that is something a Dragon does....and I am not one of them" he continued, turning back, though there was something missing from the end of that statement as he looked at Aria. "We are going there because the exposure for the company would be best. The process of Soulforging is not always well viewed, or accepted depending on what circle you exist in, and to turn it to a certain positive would need resources and connections that the company lacks. The last thing I need are protestors outside of this office ready to riot."

Taking a low breath, he continued to look at Aria and added "Freedom of choice, while good as a concept, does not always apply. Is there anything else?"

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Vorneyl paused in mid-stride as Aria unexpectedly asked the question that had rattled around inside Vorneyl's own mind but which he had decided for various reasons not to ask.  It was risky pressing The Boss on his reasons for choosing one job over another, but then again she had waited until the "hired help" had left the room.  Of course the "new boy" Mr. Drow was still in the room and that meant it wasn't just "all in the family" here... but sooner or later the Drow would have to learn how this tight knit group functioned.

Vorneyl was glad that Regannos chose the tact he did in replying, certainly a full Dragon wouldn't have bothered... and that was only if the full Dragon was feeling particularly charitable.  Nevertheless, it didn't do much to assuage Vorneyl's concerns.  A "spacial anomaly" wasn't exactly something that Vorneyl could "settle down" with a well aimed shot.  If anything Aria's piloting ability made her the most likely to be able to handle any trouble caused by the spacial anomaly.

But it certainly sounded as if the Boss had made his mind up for good (no surprise there) and Vorneyl decided that pressing the issue would only be futile (or worse).  It was never wise to upset a Dragon... and only slightly less unwise to risk upsetting a Half-Dragon.  However it was for exactly that reason that Vorneyl's appreciation of Aria's moxie went up a couple of notches, the girl had guts there was no doubt about it.

Vorneyl looked at the others before shrugging his shoulders and saying to Regannos, "Well I'm sure there are still a bunch of questions or at least a fair number of "unknowns" still hanging in the air... but I guess some of that may get resolved in the briefing from the client.  Since the choice has been made, what do you want the rest of us to do at this point Boss?  Are we off to consult the client on the job?  Do you want any of us to do something else in particular?"

The mercenary stands stiffly after her statement, only her head turned slightly to face her Half-Dragon employer. While her body remains nearly perfectly still, subtle eye movements make clear that her mind is busy processing the information Regannos is coveying to them. In the end, she purses her lips and nods.

"Very well." She says, "Thank you for your candor, sir." While she understood the decision as a business prospect, she felt the Half-Dragon underestimated the dangers of the venture to the entire crew. The odds of boredom were high, but should the odds flip, any losses of equipment or personnel would likely be high, if not total. But then, she had never been overly concerned with avoiding danger when she was choosing contracts, either.

"While you finalize the contract terms, I will attempt to gather any additional information on our beloved 'space-time ananomly' and make any preparations that we can."

Vorneyl didn't bother to suppress his groan as he said in a sarcastic tone, "Oh how bloody lovely... nothing like a back seat driving snitch constantly breathing down your neck as he or she looks over your shoulder.  So whose the lucky son-of-a-bitch who gets to play the role of the monkey on our back?

And does this Reaper priest know how to take orders... or duck?  Because I have to warn you Boss, in the middle of a heated fire-fight, with the continued existence of myself or my teammates on the line, I don't have time nor will I make time to listen to some twerp bitching & moaning about this breech of church etiquette or that offense to his or her deity-of-choice.

The last thing we need is an "observer" who thinks he or she has any real "pull".  Also considering the heat from the last job, I hope this pansy priest can hold his or her own in a drag out knock down fire fight... because I, for one, am not "carrying" any "dead weight" around once the gloves come off and the lead starts flying."

Vorneyl raised his hands to forestall complaints as he added in a more resigned tone, "Now don't get me wrong Boss... I realize your lawyers aren't giving you much choice in this matter.  But I felt I owed it to you to share my feelings on this new twisted development.

You say this priest is being forced on us... Ok, nothing we can do about it.  But I hope you're not expecting me to take extra precautions to make sure this ratty snitch doesn't get his head blown off as he's proselytizing."

Vorneyl cast a wary glance over at the Drow paladin as he added in a concerned tone, "So how does this news grab you Vorniir?  You think your Lover inspired faith can deal with a Reaper cleric in our midst?  I sure hope you boys can learn to play nice despite any doctrinal differences."

Though of course if not, I won't object to them taking each other out either.  Guess that's the difference in being on "this" side of the life-death line... once you cross that line and come back a machine, all this divine magic hoopla seems to have much less usefulness to it than it once did as flesh & blood.

What I am worried about is that this priest is going to owe his or her primary allegiance to the Church of the Reaper and NOT to us.  If the priest is a Reaper first & foremost... then that means he or she has no loyalty to Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith.

It makes me uneasy having someone not pledged to Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith overseeing our operations... and likely making secret reports back to the Church of the Reaper, who let's face it has an axe to grind with us over that last job involving the White Dragon.

My worry is that this priest is going to be too "professional"... but that it'll be the Church of the Reaper, perhaps allied by the ISPD, who will benefit most and directly from that professionalism."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

And in came the dreaded priest through the main entry way. He was dressed to impress in what seemed to be old age military officer threads and his mask, boots, and gloves had all been shined to a brushed metal finish. The thick magnetic boots squeaked as he walked in, thumbing through a folder. "From the look of it, you knew I was coming." He said with mirth as he looked at the expression of the half dragon. The church indeed works fast! He looked up from the file and his head tilted in some odd way as the smile was not something to be seen past the mask. "I am sorry to place you in this situation. I will do what I am able to in the given situations as they arise."

He offered a respectful bow of the head to the pointy eared Paladin. "Greetings brother." A bow to the lady pilot, and a general greet to the others which he knew little of. "I do hope reputations and chatter will not influence the opportunity for mutual benefit in our venture." He addressed the smooth skin as he removed the mask. His skin had symbols that shown as their natural color, not tattoos. His eyes appeared as black orbs in his skull and his voice fully disguised his age as he was a younger man. Dragons say that "If a mortal should cast magic, the gods would make them born to do it." And this man was death magic on the genetic level. "What can I do yah for?"

Vorneyl hid his disappointment well (sometimes having artificial features had its benefit).  He had hoped to hear the others' responses to his previous query and have a bit of time to dig up information on their "guest" before the priest had arrived but it seemed such was not to be.

In response to the priest's final query, Vorneyl shrugged as he said in a casual tone, "Well I suppose for starters, you might tell us your name and a bit about yourself?

Along with that, you might tell us how it came about that you, specifically, were chosen to join our merry band of mercs.

And speaking of mutual benefit... just how do you, personally, see your role with us now that you're attached to Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith?  I have to admit it isn't entirely clear to me at the moment just what your purpose is with our team... or for that matter, from whom you'll be taking your orders & instructions.  For instance, are you being formally "seconded" to Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith and thus will fall under our team's normal chain-of-command... or do you only answer to the Church of the Reaper?

No offense meant or anything... I'm just trying to figure out how you fit into things around here."

Vorneyl nodded his head towards the folder the priest had been thumbing through moments ago as he added, "Looks like you got your briefing on us already, but in case there were gaps in my bio... the name's Vorneyl Kenath."

Jouhan had been silent when the storm about get reaper priest coming along became news. His only concern was that did the priest know the half-orc whom he was figthing with in the ritual chamber or not. He himself concerned with little religious doctrine but wondered is this priest a kamikaze or manipulator, so he reflected upon Vorneyl's worries and was about voice them when priest came in.

Wonderful, no doubt made purpose so we cannot dig any information about the guy nor pre-plan anything.

When Vorneyl introduced himself, Jouhan followed by saying; "Jouhan Calader, melee combat specialist in Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith."

Kalic's lips twitch as the Reaperite enters the room, his solid blue orbs of eyes glowing.  Shaking his head, he smiles.  "I suppose it is too much to ask of you to consider a different religious path, so other than that, try not to perform evil acts while working with us.  It could be hazardous to your health.  As I am sure your file has read, I am Kalic Vorniir, Paladin of the Lover, and relic hunter.  I am a twin gun specialist."  The drow spoke, resisting the urge to remove the man before them from existence.   Although he could respect many of the Reapers teachings, he could not entirely forget the more evil rites and dogma of the church on the whole.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Saxon gave a nod as he listed to the abundant introductions and questions. "Right. Well, I was not given a name by a parent so I was named Saxon which in my language means war after I was found to have unique talents. I was first of my class at the academy as well attained my holy symbol in short time." He had a serious look as he was not joking, they should be honored with truth. "I was chosen as they expected a rough reception considering current events...." He took a long breath and sighed. "I tend to have a much more liberal view of things as the I had grown up with the teachings of evening glory, the goddess of immortal love. To be honest they expect me to live longer than other more.... ridged researchers."

"As far as a role? I do a great deal of research as well I can tend to both arcane and divine spell casting needs. I tend to summon up many weaker cannon fodder." He bowed his head to the paladin. "No need to worry, I do not make used of any sentient creature. Their deaths are to be honored and respected. The summons are more temporary constructs of will than anything else." He tilted his head side to side as he thought about the next question. "The church may be an authority and whom I answer to in details of undeath, death, burial, and similar situations. But I respect the fact that the church is that, a church and not a military organization. I tend to focus on letting summons do the killing while I can focus on more on my.... utility nature. So I will be happy to honor any orders you give in combat. Otherwise I will work hard not to hinder you or slow you down in any way. A warrior cannot fulfill their work if they have to baby sit a wizard like myself. Simply, I am a monster and I understand my place well in your desired order."

"Your attention to detail is noted in... well great detail, heh."

"Jouhan. Nice to meet you, it was suggested to me provide you the opportunity to practice killing undead. Granted the temporary nature of my constructs."

He bowed fully to the paladin, "I will continue honoring the sentient dead, and I respect your oaths and need to fulfill them. I respect your skill as I do your willingness to work with me, no matter how strained that may be. I will accept any punishment you see fit. But I will not pause if there is a action I can take that will secure the survival of your team." When he raised up he looked the paladin square in the eye, though it was hard to tell considering the coloration of his eyes. "I am sorry for the situation his puts you in."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Oddly enough Vorneyl seemed to relax slightly as he nodded his head and said in a mildly relieved tone, "Well that seems pretty fair enough to me.  You're not trying to sugar coat things and I can appreciate a straight, unvarnished answer even if the pill may be a bitter one to swallow.

Seems like your Church chose wisely when they picked you Saxon.  At least you're honest about what you are and what you can do... whether or not I feel entirely comfortable with the concept, at least I now have an idea of what or rather who I'll be working with.

As for the chain-of-command thing, that's good to know.  We tend to be somewhat loose on that, not really ones for rigid hierarchy... except that Lord Regannos is "The Boss" who has the final say on a job, but he's good about listening to the ideas and opinions of those who work for him."

Vorneyl looked back and forth between Kalic and Saxon.  In truth Vorneyl had thought he was the only one having trouble with the new addition of a Reaper priest but it seemed the drow paladin had some very distinct viewpoints on the matter.

Vorneyl finally added in a serious tone, "Now speaking of "evil acts" and punishment... let's remember that Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith isn't a religious organization.  To my knowledge the Company doesn't directly support or favor any one Church or Deity over any other.  Also Imperial Law is a bit tricky when it comes to dividing "Good vs. Evil"... and determining what can be done about either and who has the authority to judge & mete out punishment.

So let's none of us be too hasty to either judge or punish until all the facts are in.

I may not necessarily like Saxon's proposed methods... but I'll be damned if I can argue with his stated end result goal of team survival.  If there is "punishment" to be handed out... it should wait until the team is safe and has time to analyze the situation thoroughly, with a close eye on the strictures of Imperial Law.

Or at least that's my take on the matter... maybe the Boss has a different viewpoint?"

With that Vorneyl glanced over at Regannos to see if he was going to voice an opinion.

Regannos contemplated the situation, before reading the file for a moment longer.  "Well, this brings us to the final point of business.  With the new direction of our companies work, I am stepping down as immediate supervisor for this group, though I am still in charge of the mission as a whole.  Vorneyl, since you have prior leadership workings in the Legions, you are now in command of the group.  I am sure that you will do well in this role.

Anyways, I am sure Kalic and Saxon both know Imperial Law, and what punishments are advisable for what acts.  So, do we have any further issues to respond to?"

Once again Vorneyl was glad that his artificial features would not register emotion unless he consciously ordered them to... it helped cover up the surprise he felt by this latest announcement.  Bloody Hell!  I'm the new Team Leader!?  Well so much for playing the carefree cavalier... now I have to deal with actual responsibility again!

Vorneyl knew better than to argue with the Boss, once Regannos had made up his mind and made his executive decision, the matter was closed & final.  With a simple nod of his head, Vorneyl said, "Right Boss... I'm the new Tactical C&C for the Team but you still have overall Strategic Oversight."

Well I wonder how that bit of news is going to fly with the boys & girls?

Vorneyl glanced around at the others before he added, "Well I don't know about anyone else, but I don't think I have any further issues to discuss at the moment.  It is probably best not to delay the meeting with the new client, Dr. Renfar Inoma, nor put off the detailed mission briefing.  Speaking of which, I'd like everyone to attend... unless you have some really urgent business that just can't be put off."

Vorneyl looked over at Saxon as he asked, "By the way Saxon, have your files been updated to include the nature of our new assignment for the Imperial Society of Arcane Magic?  If so, what is your take on the job?  Do you have any experience with or knowledge of time-space fluxes or disturbances?"

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Aria actually shared few of the Soulmech's concerns. Her while her homeworld exclusively worshipped their ancestor Telamon, it lay solidly inside Osorus space, where worship of the Reaper is more commonplace than in the Qesemet realms. In the domain of the blue Dragons, they were the paladins, cruel but with honor. Dangerous? To be sure, but no more so than the devout of the Judge that turns their ire towards you.

Most importantly, to the mercenary's view, disciplined. Far preferably than the undependable follows of the Destroyer, or the Mother. While the young pilot had no taste for wanton cruelty, she considered both good and evil to be far to mutable concept for her concern. Was she evil when she torpedoed the Lapu cruiser in the Astilid fields, killing all aboard? Or good because they were pirates. Or evil, because the Lapu were a nomadic people, who traveled in huge family ships carrying up to five thousand people, most of whom were non-combatant family members. Or good because they were dropping viral bombs on the Astilid miners... Best left to the philosophers. Aria got a kill score and a bonus, that she understood.

She responded to Saxon's bow with a nod of her head as she stood comfortably at ease with her hands resting behind her back. Aria saw that as sufficient introduction, with no need for any comment from her.

She instead spent her time while the others sparred verbally silently running a series of search programs in her head. "Congratulations," she said, breaking her silence as she came to attention and snapped off a playful, yet sincere, salute. "Sir."

Whatever their disagreements, the young mercenary had fought alongside and respected each of the Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith veterans. If not she would have taken that pirate contract out in the Monscrome system instead of re-signing with the Saravan aristocorp. The terms were juicy, but pirates were notorously late in payment, and the Altarans were the worst. That job had disaster written all over it.

The Imperial Society was located not far, at least, by the standards of the flying transportation provided by the sky taxi's.  As you pull up to the Societies main entrance, a young acolyte in purple robes walks forward to meet you.  "Greetings, sirs.  I am Novice Ishim.  How may I help you today?"  The young boy asked, looking to each of you with interest.

[Private to Sister Aria: Dr. Renfar Inoma is a noted physicist and renowned wizard with the Imperial Society for Arcane Magic.  Not much is known about his career, but his papers are always much sought after for their detail and high level of accuracy.

Kalic Vorniir's files are limited, until you go on to the religious sites.  He has been awarded many blessing of no less than four different branches of the church, Including the Judge, Lover, Mother, and the Magus.  Of course it is often noted that it is unusual for a Drow Paladin to be in service, but there is nothing to say to prove otherwise that he is less than he appears.  He is also noted as a religious artifact collector.

Saxon's search is almost non-existent, though there are vague rumors that he is a skilled Necromancer, there is not much more than that.

As you traverse the halls of the building, you notice many students talking with interest.  They look you over briefly, before turning back to their conversations.  "Did you hear?  A new phenomenon has been discovered on the fringe of Imperial space.  Dr. Inoma just released his initial report, I wonder which of his assistants will get to go?  I hope its not as unstable as Krellis..."  They spoke in excited whispers.

As you reach Dr. Inoma's office, you notice the door is ajar.  As you look inside, you see Dr. Inoma argueing with a red half-dragon.  The half-dragon is wearing the personal regalia of the Imperial Court.

"I don't care if you did discover this phenomenon first.  Imperial Law states that all such discoveries are to be routed through the ISPD immediately.  You know the dictates that the Emperor has in place in case of all such dangerous discoveries.  Now, hand over the information, or we shall place you under arrest for sedition and take it without your cooperation."  The half-dragon snarled pointing at the data pad on the table.

"And I told you, that this is my discovery, and I haven't even gone to research it yet before I send the information to the ISPD!  I am in the process of doing just that right now.  Your presuming much on little authority!  Now get out of my office, before I have you thrown out!"  He yelled, not backing down.

Vorneyl watched as the doctor and the official bickered back in forth over "who has the biggest authority".

Making an oddly metallic sound of a natural gesture, Vorneyl "clears his throat" for a moment to get the doctor's attention and then says with a polite smile, "Umm... Dr. Inoma isn't it?  I know we were supposed to be meeting now... but... ahh... if you're rather busy at the moment, we can always come back later when it is more convenient for you."

As he says this last bit, Vorneyl gives a "significant glance" over to the half-dragon and raises an eyebrow as if to say: You have company, want us to come back?

Vorneyl straightened himself up as he watched the official depart.  Oh yeah... that boy's intending to cause trouble somewhere down the line... you can bet his shiny red scales on that one.  I wonder just how much official "juice" the Doc must have to be able to order a half-dragon ISPD official around like he was a common office boy?

Vorneyl focused on the Doctor, displaying his credentials and said in a polite tone, "That is correct Dr. Inoma.  We are from Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith and were sent here by our mission supervisor, Lord Regannos of House Sarava.

I am Vorneyl Kenath, the tactical team leader and the in-the-field point man for Lord Regannos, who maintains overall strategic mission oversight.

After a brief pause, Vorneyl glanced back at the door where the official departed in a huff and then back at Inoma as he said in a wary tone, "So Dr. Inoma... before we get into the specifics of the job you have for us... I'd like to know if we can expect additional, future visits from the ISPD while we are working for you on this job?  And if so, have you made it clear to the Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith management regarding the likelihood of continued ISPD involvement and potential interference with yourself and/or this job?"

Dr. Inoma waves off the issue of the ISPD.  "I know my Imperial Law.  They have no right to this information unless it directly effects the Empire.  Which it doesn't.  The ISPD likes to get their dark noses into everything!  Unlike Krellis, this distortion is stable, and our readings tell us that it is not expanding.  That is the curious part of it though.  Most natural phenomenon of this nature either expands or contracts depending on the source of its power.  This is completely stable, and that has us piqued.

The plan is to teleport just outside the range of the distortion, and make our way through to see if we can determine the cause of the effect.  Once we have this, we can descide if we should set up a research facility, or scrub the mission.  Either way, your company will be paid handsomely."

"I do rather enjoy the opportunity to run into a unknown celestial event for the sake of finding out why it works." He pulled out a small device and made a few adjustments. He then did a sweep of the room rotating around to be sure of the situation. He payed close attention to the blue light it emitted as he swiped over.

Yeah I bet you know Imperial Law... but I wonder just how much the ISPD really cares about the exact "letter of the law"?  Seems to me the good ol' ISPD is willing to bend or break or hell even make up its own rules & regulations to get what it wants and MAYBE apologize later if they step on some toes doing it.

But I'm not hear to argue the finer points of Imperial Law... but I am going to have a word or two with the Boss about it, just in case the boys back in management aren't aware of these ISPD "complications".

Vorneyl glanced over at Saxon and nodded his head as he said, "Ok Saxon has the right of it... ISPD and Imperial Law aside right now... let's have a sit down, go over the tactical and logistical necessities of this assignment and chat about the possible risks & dangers we all might be facing.

As Saxon inquired about, we would like you to explain the nature of your research as much as you can... with the understanding that most of us don't have much in the way of a background in science.  Perhaps you can tell us what you have found, what you hope to find, what you might find... and more importantly how any of that might pose a treat to you or me, or your people or my people.

Dr. Inoma opens up a holographic chart of the Dragon Star Empire, with precise movements of his hands, he narrows the view down to a glowing blue sphere.  "This is the Kanabula System.  About five years ago, I discovered a distortion in time and space...  Imagine a shield around a system, protecting it, yet altering its nature by not being in sync with our own time frame.  From my scrying attempts and a probe launched a year ago, I have determined that there is at least three planets in the system, one of which may be inhabited.  It is there that I assume the source of this distortion is located.  Unfortunately, my probe quit sending information mere moments it crossed the threshold of the distortion.  All of my attempts to scry on my probe have been mixed.  The only thing I can say for sure is that it still exists, in relatively the same condition in which it entered the distortion.  What I need from your company is protection, in case something is not what it seems within the distortion, and transportation.  We have the equipment and supplies ready to set up a research facility if I deem it necessary, and those will be part of the cargo I bring along, as well as a few of my students and fellow researchers."  He spoke.

Vorneyl looked at Aria for a moment before he said, "So Doctor... are you planning to actually go into this distortion like where you sent your probe?  Are you expecting us to cross over this threshold and enter the distortion with you?

What are your theories regarding why the probe hasn't been able to return from its mission and cross back over the distortion threshold again?  Are you even sure that it is in fact physically or magically possible to return from the distortion once one has crossed this threshold?

You say the distortion puts this location out of sync with our time frame... what sort of danger or effect might that have on a living being who crosses over the threshold to enter this distortion?  And what happens to us when we try to return to our time frame?

What about these planets, are you planning to try to reach them and, if so, are we expected to accompany you?  What do you know, if anything, about these three planets?  Any signs of activity?  What makes you think that one of the planets is inhabited?

What sort of risks or dangers or threats can you theorize that we might face?  What sort of technological or magical threat could we be looking at based on the level of technology or magic needed to create a distortion field like this... would it be something comparable to the Empire, less... greater?"

Vorneyl paused before adding, "I realize that's a lot of questions so feel free to take then one at a time."  Vorneyl glanced at his team and said, "And if any of you think of anything relevant to ask about this assignment, please feel free to speak up.  This is not really my area of expertise, so I could easily be missing or overlooking something."

"Interesting and more interesting," Aria thinks to herself. Unlike the others, the mercenary feels no reservations about ISPD involvement. If the ISPD is to be their adversary, that is an opponent that she understands. Watch out for infiltration and sabotage of their operations. And if conflict should occur, well, employers could often be held liable for the majority of consequences, if Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith writes a solid contract.

"An anamoly of this stability is itself, well... anamolous, is it not?" She asks, her voice projecting from the metallic feline she has piloted to the meeting. More and more it seemed natural for her to interact from her vehicle, as she was beginning to see her body as just another vehicle piloted by her consciousness. She wondered if Vorneyl had any of the same feelings upon his second life as a Soul Mech. "It seems a fair assumption that this is not a natural occurance, but a conscious design to either shield or quarantine the system.

"But by whom?"

Dr. Inoma looked pleased and smiles at Aria's statement.  "Exactly!  Who has the ability to do such a thing, which, by modern technological and magical standards a feat would would be, if not impossible, impractical.

The few readings we have, put the distortion of time within a few milliseconds of our own frame of time.  I am certain that will be able to enter and leave as we desire.  To be sure of my research, we are going to have to enter the system, and, if not land, at least take orbital scans.  This all points to a highly advanced civilization that could possibly be of use to the Empire, but I want the chance to learn as much as I can before I turn this information to the general public."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Saxon was taking mental notes of the important bits. "The hard part is that you dont commonly give any information to someone not ready for it. I dont teach a fledgling mage how to use one of my clouds until they are ready. Just the same a race of people who know how to alter time are not likely to aid a empire who knows not the discipline needed to use temporal technology." He gave a smile "While it is fun and important to go take a look. I would advise caution. If they are a people who know how to control time, there is a very important reason they have not branched out into the universe. And we need to keep in mind that time works on a whole other level of understanding. While we understand our single dimension they may exist on more. I have had to deal with a great many points of view at the same time when controlling summons. They could do similar naturally."

"This seems more and more dangerous. But fun all the same."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

"I believe it generous to assume that the inhabitants of the system are altruistically protecting us from ourselves." Aria says, although her smile is hidden deep inside the workings of her feline robot. "It's just as possible they are such horrible bastards that the gods themselves have quarentined them inside the anomaly to protect us from them. Or that they are themselves trapped inside the anamoly due to their own misguided tampering with time."

In any case, it's unscientific to make assumptions on the nature and demeanor of the inhabitants with no data to go on."

Dr. Inoma nods his head in agreement.  "If nothing happens, well, that is why the Society collects Tithes from all of its members.  If we do discover something, it will be very useful for the Society to sell or make use of for itself.  So, do we have a mission?"  He asks.

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

Vorneyl shrugged as he said, "Well the truth is that there isn't really much of anything that anybody really seems to "know" about what's going on.  I suppose that's why we were called in though, after all if people knew the trouble ahead of time they wouldn't need to call us and we'd be out of work.

Understand Doctor that working blindly in the "unknown" is not my preferred method of operation.  I can only guess at what danger we may be heading into.

The fact is that my body may be highly technical in nature... but I am not.  I'm going to have to rely on you and your tech people to keep us updated on the possible "scientific threats" that we may encounter by crossing this threshold.  Meanwhile my team and I will try to stay on top of the more typical conventional threats that we've been trained to handle.

I have to admit... I dislike the fact that you lost contact with your probe so quickly.  It implies some kind of interference.  But if I understand you correctly, the probe is still believed to be functional... as in you don't believe it has been destroyed outright, correct?  That is a more hopeful sign.  An overly hostile group would probably blow the probe right out of the sky the moment they detected it.  That doesn't mean we're safe... they may be cunningly allowing the probe to remain intact as a means of luring us in to retrieve it before they pounce."

Vorneyl shrugged again as he added, "But in any case, you've contacted Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith and offered a contract.  The management, including our direct boss Lord Regannos, has chosen to accept the job and agree to the offered contract.  So barring any further word from the management or our supervisor, the mission is "On".

Now does anyone else have anything more to say or ask at this time?"

Without further questions, the meeting comes to a close.  In one weeks time, the researchers will arrive to be transported to the Silverwing, and from there, the mysterious Kanabula system.

Barring anything problematic with the journey, you await the researchers on top of the headquarters of Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith headquarters on Vespar.  Lord Regannos is there, waiting with Captain D'arville and Commander Karde with a transport shuttle waiting to take off.

Prior to the mission start date, and probably as soon as Vorneyl returned to HQ, Vorneyl reported to Regannos regarding the "altercation" (difference of opinion) between Dr. Inoma and the red 1/2 dragon who had been demanding immediate ISPD involvement/access to the Doctor's discovery.  Vorneyl would inquire whether Regannos or the Management felt that the ISPD could become a serious problem on this job.  He would also inquire as to what Regannos would want Vorneyl to do should the ISPD begin interfering/interceding.

With her eyes closed, its sensors feed directly into her mind. As she stands at ease, she reviews the latest counter-intelligence information she has been studying for the past week. That, and procuring any gear she could requisition from Daguam di Thrae vur Xarzith that might help keep the ISPD from getting their noses into the wrong place.

As a message comes in, stating that Jouhan had been on the ship for some time, the pilot signals everyone to come aboard the shuttle.  As you take off, you leave the cloud city of Vespar behind, reaching quickly into the higher atmosphere.  Soon, the artificial gravity generators kick in as you leave behind the homeworld of the silver dragons, and race towards the largely retrofitted House Sarava destroyer known as Silverwing.  Even from a distance, you notice that many of the weapons platforms have been removed, and armored plating added to reinforce the hull.  As you come around the back, you notice  smallish docking bay, where the pilot lands.

Inside, a variety of people wait to greet you.  A young half-elf woman in white doctors robes waits with a medical scanner.  A small robotic looking figure with a couple of repair bots hanging around it.  Standing off from this small group is a team of military personnel.  An elf with the look of a sniper, two humans who appear to be equipped for heavy assault, and a half-orc armed with all sorts of wires and blocks of what looks like explosives.

"This is our chief medical officer, Doctor Aria Moonrift.  And our chief engineer, ARM-20.  There are few personnel on board, as between the ships A.I. and Mr. ARM, there is little need."  Captain D'arville spoke, letting Commander Karde continue.  "And these rogues are my men.  Korm and Gand, shock troopers.  Heian Brightstar, special ops.  And Korsk, our demolitions expert."  He introduced his company.

"Acknowledged."  The ships A.I. responded, and you feel the ship begin to move away from its stationary position.  The adventure is on its way, within a few short hours, you may be looking at the temporal distortion that Dr. Inoma was so eager to study.

Having studied the blueprints and layouts for the ship (as well as reading the available dossiers on both the personnel and equipment assigned to this mission), Vorneyl head off to the available jump seats and readied himself for the Jump.  Vorneyl reflected that one advantage to his current condition as a Soulmech was that he no longer felt queasy during a teleportation.  It had often been a private shame for him when he was still organic that his body seemed to react adversely to the teleportation process for whatever reason, at least he didn't have to deal with the messy consequences now that he was a machine.

Be thankful for the positive, even the little stuff!

After the teleportation, Captain D'arville summons you to the bridge.  When you arrive, the view ports battle armor is retracted, and before you, like a pale blue misty vale, is the temporal distortion Dr. Inoma spoke of, and in the distance, a white dwarf star, and three planets.  "Sensor readings indicate that two of these planets are uninhabitable.  The second one appears to contain life, and an unknown energy source."  The ships A.I. speaks.

Since the voyage began, Aria has spent most of her shipboard time inside her feline robot, using it in lieu of a more traditional sealed flight suit. Many of the crew were unaware that she was anything more than a very sophisticated robot. More and more she was feeling at home using senses and limbs that were not her own.

She seems less than comfortable with artificially intelligent ship. Among the Telamonian mercenary legions, such ships were more likely to have a black box pilot. Many of the legion's best pilots had their consciousness' transfered into their vehicles, much like a soul mech in their robotic bodies.

Dr. Inoma and his assistants enter the bridge, studying the phenomenon with their bare eyes.  Looking at Sister Aria, he nods, moving to the control panel for the scanners.  "This is just as I had hoped.  A stable temporal distortion.  the power level is amazing.  I doubt even an Imperial Dreadnought's reactor would be capable of making a bubbled of thousandth of this size."  He spoke, walking over to the shield systems.  There he rapidly types out algorithms to be inputted into the ships A.i. and be implemented.  "There we go, if my calculations and theory is correct, this will allow the ships shields to be on the same frequency as the distortions.  We shouldn't suffer any harmful effects from the cross over now.  Captain D'arville, if your ready I think it is time."  He spoke.

Captain D'arville nodded, and began to bark out orders to the ships A.I.  The shields came up around the vessel, matching the color and pattern of the distortion.  As the Silverwing moved forward it crossed the boundary of time and space, and entered the system.  Immediately after passing through, the ship began to shake.  "Warning, extreme temporal distortions have caused spacial flux within the solar system.  At the present rate, this ship will be destroyed within four hours.  Recommended course of action is to land on inhabited planet.  Warning, black hole detected.  Unknown cause.  Phenomenon appears stable, but is source of spacial fluxes."  The ships A.I. spoke.  Now that you have passed the temporal shield, you see the black hole near the inhabited planet.  It is surrounded by what appears to be a crimson nebula, but from the planet a stead beam of energy is being fed directly into it.  Who knows what these people have done, or are trying to do.  But it seems like they have been able to do the impossible, and tame a black hole, perhaps even create one.

The ship accelerates towards the planet, apparently heading towards the source of the beam of energy.  As it passes through the atmosphere, the ships violent shaking, which had been getting worse, stops completely.  "Ships functions returning to normal.  Atmosphere is stable.  Setting course for source of intense beam of energy."  The ships A.I. speaks.  The surface of the world is like any other normal planet within the Empire, though there does not appear to be any major cities.  The ship slows, and then stops, as a massive emitter appears in the distance, producing the beam of energy.  There is a small, almost medieval town settled around the emitter, which itself appears to be constructed at the base like a temple.  The arrival of a star ship might be startling to the local populous, perhaps it might be better to investigate on foot.

It's uncommon to see the mercenary outside her robotic vehicle, even less so without her helmet. The viewing screen comes to life, depicting a rather rural, barely civilized medieval village (compared to a planet in the Empire that is).  There appears to be only humans in the village, though the emitter is set up like a temple, with four pylons focusing on the beam.  Something is not right about that at all.  The technology level is far too advanced for the city around it.  And then, that is when you see the constructs emerge from the temple.  Roughly humanoid in shape, they appear to be made with their armor as part of their being.  They wield what appear to be halberds, though it looks like there may be some sort of laser on the head of the weapon, built cleverly into the weapon itself.  The constructs appear to move amongst the populous without trouble, though with a little fear.  Any scans on them or the temple bounce back, unable to get a reading.

Aria's lips are pursed tightly as she looks the data over. To her, it appears to have all the hallmarks of a beachhead inside the Empire. Invaders from somewhere or somewhen have somehow created the gateway, along with a massive shield around the system to keep their doings from being detected. But more intelligence was obviously needed at this point.

"What sort evidence do we have of travel to and from the village? If they are supplied by outlying farms, that may allow us an infiltration route, as well as access to the rumors from the farmers. It seems likely that this gateway is recent, and there are bound to be tales about this... 'Spear of the Gods' peircing the heavens."

Jouhan watches the screen and map what A.I shows and says; "Well, we got promising spot there. Now how enter without those guys sensors or radars go full intruder alarm? Assuming their sensors reach much farther than their sentries senses."

Re: Chapter Two:  Choices

The A.I. plots a course through nearby valleys, eventually landing one away from the agricultural one.  It may take a day or so to reach the city, but perhaps it was best to arrive at night due to some of your more...unique styles of dress.

((Back finally O.o))

Saxon was content to wait until night fall, he wasn't in charge but it was indeed a good idea to loiter a bit just to be sure that people would not freak considering the number of odd skin tones they had in the group. Still, it was time to get things done.
