Re: Arc 2: Garda
Xalcus nods.

What you say makes sense.  That said, my House will likely be the ones in control before too long.  Mnemon is seeing to that, and most of the Realm knows better than to get in her way.  I do agree that it would have been easier had the Empress actually named her successor.  It is quite odd that she never did that, come to think of it.  The Chosen of the Dragons do not live forever...

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Aki shrugged.

Best I can think of is she was putting off readjusting her balance. No matter how just her choice, whichever house she picked the heir from would become higher ranked than the others and it would be seen as favoritism. Which would make her perfect balance that much harder to maintain as those not chosen would band together against the one who was.

At the same time she seems far to much a realist to have been playing 'I can hold out a few more years, this won't have to change' for as long as she did. But then again, most of what I hear about the Realms is word of mouth from visiting Lunars, so I really can't say. I can't say politics is something I've ever invested a great deal of thought to.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Xalcus shrugs again.

My life has been nothing but politics.  Well, that and war.  Should Mnemon fail to take the throne, I can safely say life will continue, though.  Gaps in power create openings, and the more worthy and Enlightened party will assume control.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Provided the Realm doesn't fragment, become two more more nations under different rule, rather like a more unified shogunate. Okay, I think it's ready. Aki looked at Xalcus. I feel it only fair to warn you. This is going to hurt.

Xalcus shrugs again.

I've dealt with pain in my time.  Though I have to wonder whether you meant the Realm or the tattoos...

He grins a bit as he says it.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Aki blinked then chuckled. The tattoos. Like I said, the Realm might very well be completely salvaged with a minimum amount of pain if a strong leader emerges quickly. The tatto's are a certainty. Ready when you are.

Go ahead.

With that, Xalcus taps into his Personal Essence, fortifying himself against the coming pain.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
It was several hours later before Aki was done, but Xalcus was now sporting gleaming red jade tattos over most of his torso and arms.

You handled that a lot better than I did, Aki admitted. Though in my defense I was only an young elk and yeddim herder who battle experiance totaled one instance of me losing my mind and on trial by fire.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Xalcus nods.

I was also a bit better prepared than you.  I learned the virtues of protection against pain a long, long time ago.

He walks over to a nearby mirror and examines his new tattoos.

These should help quite a bit in the coming battles.  Oh, that elf wizard lady said she wanted to talk to you before doing something or other with a portal in Skrymtor.  I think she's in the Flagon.

With that, he starts putting his armor back on, confident in his ability to face jesters for the foreseeable future.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Wiggling his fingers to get rid of the cramp in his wrist, Aki gave another respectful bow to Xalcus. Thank you for your time and the discussion. It nice to talk with someone besides my wife and children that neither worship me, nor want to kill me. Lyn is rather combat focused and I don't completely trust Nail.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Xalcus bows back.

I don't know about Nail.  He seemed a decent enough fellow when I talked with him.  Then again, so did that jester.

He shakes his head.

At the very least, I'm more prepared for the next time someone tries to pull something on me.  And our talk was definitely enlightening.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
I trust Nails goals. I just don't rust how he gets there. Still, with the exception of the Deathknights and Raksha, I think we can all agree that the end of the world would be a bad thing.

With that Aki bows a final time and heads for the pub.

Liriel is waiting for him there, an excited look on her face (as usual).  She waves as he enters.

Aki!  There you are!  I've been meaning to talk with you the last few days but things have been kind of busy.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
I can understand that, although the Jade tattoo project went off without a hitch. Smiling Jack will hopefully get a nasty surprise if he attempts to dupe Xalcus again.

SO what did you want to speak with me about? More magical theorizing?

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Liriel grins, a surprisingly frightening sight.

Something like that.  First, we got our ship docked onto a new outgrowth of the Spire, and you can visit it anytime you want.  We have an excellent multi-dimensional library in the computer system.  Second... I was wondering if I could get your permission to lay the groundwork for a portal system for use with your patron god's plans, and potentially our own, too... in Skrymtor, of course...

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Aki nodded. A stable portal between home and wherever it is we're going should make this a lot easier on everybody. It will also make it easier to get a message to me in case of an emergency.

Now you said there was a library...
It wasn't hard to tell that AKi was practically drooling at the prospect.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Yep, on the computer on our ship.  We can head over now and I'll get you set up... then I want to go to Skrymtor and get the portal ready before we really get everyone together.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Instead of explaining, Liriel smiles, and with a surge of power, directly implants the information into Aki's mind, from the technical details to basic concepts.

She smiles at him after the download.

That explain it well enough?

Aki blinked and blinked again. A toothy grin spread across his face. This I like. So much knowledge. So easy to transport it and duplicate it. Pure genius.

Liriel grins again.

And that's without the glories of the internet, too.  Well, its more of a Hyper-Net nowadays, but still.  So, you ready to go the ship?

Re: Arc 2: Garda
Liriel grins.

Hold on to your butt, then.

Another flare of power, and the scene shifts.  No longer inside the tavern in Garda, Aki finds himself sitting at a table in a metallic structure.  The structure is made of that same crystalline Essence material that the Immortals use, supplemented by something that seems almost... Essence-inert.  Liriel leads him over to the console, and sets him down at it.

You already know the basics... the A.I. has been set up to recognize you.  Unfortunately, we don't have HyperNet access yet.  Gaara will be working on that while we go a-ninja-ing for Luna.  Oh, once you've had your fill, I think Shikamaru will want to hold a planning session soon, before we go see Luna and get things underway.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
A small mumble was all the reply Liriel got as, awkwardly at first, AKi began typing in inquiries. Starting off with Magical texts from other worlds Aki immersed himself in study. In was a relief in some ways, to be able to just sit and read without have to go through bloody battle or massive political maneuvering for each scrap of text.

AKi stayed in that spot until he was called in for Shikimaru's meeting.

Re: Arc 2: Garda
A very long meeting happens, plans are discussed and re-discussed.  The Village Hidden in the Sky is formed, and the village headbands are made.

Liriel goes to a quiet spot in town, out of the way of the hustle and bustle, yet large enough for a small manse to be built.  She starts chanting.  Lighting starts rippling around her and the ground.  A black shadow forms, and then with a thunderclap, splits apart into thousands of pieces.  An hours long intricate dance commences, directed by Liriel, as pieces connect, and shift from shadow to substance.  A variety of strange materials come into play as a large circular construct is made.  Standing vertically, twenty feet off the ground, at least 30 feet in diameter (not counting the portal's actual material width, another two or three feet), light and shadow start coalescing into a platform with a gentle ramp, large enough for a small troop formation to move through.  A small bit on the side forms a control panel, blending Creation aesthetics with those of the Order.  Finally, another pulse of power occurs, and runes glow brightly, only to dim to the point they can barely be seen.  Once this is over, Liriel, slightly tired, grins at Aki.

So... think that should work?  When its finally powered on, you should be able to see directly though it to whatever's on the other side.  Oh, it'll adjust for nuances in sending and receiving portals as well.  So.... how'd I do?
