Re: Ozzy's Experiments

As Ozzy finished setting up the first experiment, he grinned and said, "Okay, this one looks pretty simple. Running light through a specially prepared prism. Are you ready, Iris?"

He waited for her signal, wanting to make sure she was watching. After all, she was taking such an interest in explaining magic scientifically, and he wanted to make sure that she could get any data that she was planning on taking.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Iris hurried around the room, setting up observational equipment, then turned to watch carefully, "The prism thing? Okay, so what's your hypothesis?" She probed, scooting closer for a better view, "I mean, I can tell you what normal light does with a normal prism, but I'm not sure that it would be the same."

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

"Hypothesis? I'm... not really sure. This is like one of those 'experiments' in school that the teacher gives you so you can see for yourself what happens. What's supposed to happen, if I did it right, is that the prism is supposed to slowly radiate the light, rather than let it all out at once," said Ozzy, doing air quotes and everything to make it clear to Iris that he was mostly just doing as Orthos instructed. Science wasn't his favorite subject, and doing this experiment was something of a chore to him. He'd rather just try a spell until he got it right, but apparently this was a bit too dangerous for that.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Iris nodded and stood back to watch the results of the experiment, "Well, you know me. Scientific processes and all."

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

"Yeah, you're a lot better with this kind of stuff than me. I mean, I can follow directions, and retain and regurgitate all the facts that they put in the books. But actual, formalized, methodical experimentation? Doesn't really interest me. I'm surprised you can handle it, sis," said Ozzy, grinning. Now that Iris was ready, Ozzy flipped the switch on the light source, a store-bought flashlight, which sent light heading towards the prism directly. Soon, a glow began to fill the prism, and a soft rainbow radiance began to slowly creep outward from the it, like the dawn of a rising sun rather than the sudden flash of a modern light bulb.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Iris shrugged, explaining cheerfully, "Well, I've been doing it for as long as I can remember. Of course, back at the Facility, I was generally the subject of experimentation. They would hypothesize, using human norms, where they suspected my speed or IQ to be, how they expected it to progress, that sort of thing. Then we'd test. Have you ever been in a centrifuge? It's hella fun."

"You mean, like the things they use to train astronauts for the stresses of launch? No, I haven't, but it does look like a lot of fun. I still don't get how a jerk like Shade and you came out of the same facility. You two must have had a completely different set of handlers or something. The way he talks, he sounds like he was treated like some kind of animal," said Ozzy, before examining the prism again.

"Okay, so that worked I guess. Now then, what's our next step?" Ozzy asked, turning to Orthos.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Iris frowned, then shook her head, "I think we all had the same set of researchers, for the most part. I was given more freedom than some of the others because I was better behaved and didn't try to run away all of the time. But the process is the same - studying humans and studying animals. You keep as many variables out as possible."

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

"Makes sense. After all, random chance could ruin the experiment, right?" said Ozzy, wondering just what sorts of experiments had been conducted on Iris and Shade.

Shrugging, and deciding that that was a question for another time, Ozzy hummed in thought for a bit as he read the next experiment.

"Hmmm... okay, it seems that now that I've got light that's more readily observable, I'm supposed to try redirecting it. Here goes."

With that, he started concentrating, trying to get the light to move in a different direction. For a moment, nothing happened, but soon the red light twitched, before bending into a 'U' shape that had it intersecting with the blue light, creating a section of violet in midair.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Iris nodded, "Exactly!" She watched as the light bent itself, then checked readings and watched carefully. Her eyes sparkled as she mentally hypothesized and analyized the occurance in front of her, "Very interesting! Light refraction and reflection without a scientific medium." She observed.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

"That's the power of magic, Iris. Right now, I'm telling the laws of physics to shut up and sit down. Did you ever get a mana-detector set up, by the by? It should be going off right now," said Ozzy, wondering if she'd ever found a scientific way of observing mana being used.

Now that he sort of had the idea, he bent around the green light as well, causing the red light to straighten up and go the way it was supposed to.

"Aw. Hmm... this is going to take some serious practice," he stated.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Iris nodded, "Sure, my tricorder is reading it now." She admitted, "Plus, I can kinda feel it now myself. I realized it right after that sleep-over, you know. I think I've been doing it forever, but since it's never really been directly observable I never paid any attention."

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Ozzy smiled, "Nifty. So maybe you should figuratively stop and smell the roses more often. After all, who knows what else you're missing?

He then concentrated again for a moment, attempting to bring the red back around while still holding on to the green. The red twitched for a moment, before slowly coming back around, though the green didn't look entirely stable.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Iris watched with some interest, leaning in close, "How are you holding them?" She asked, "I mean, is this a sheer willpower sort of spell, or are you using mana to produce light-affecting fingers or curving the light by putting a metaphorical mirror to it?"

She checked the reading on her monitor carefully, "And also - is your intention to attempt to re-merge the colored lights?"

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Ozzy nodded, "Yeah. If I can re-merge them, then I'll try my hand at bending whole light. It's sort of like I've un-bundled some... bendy things, and now I'm going to re-bundle them and try again. Sorry, horrible analogy. And I'd say that it's sort of like I'm making an invisible 'tube' for where I want the light to go. I'm just having trouble getting them all at once."

As he spoke, his concentration slipped, and the red snapped back into place.

"Darnit. This isn't like my rune magic, where I can do it backwards in my sleep from practice. This is totally new... it's kind of refreshing, having a magical challenge again."

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Iris nodded knowingly, "Like learning biogenetic theory." She agreed, but lapsed into silence so as not to further distract her brother.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Ozzy tilted his head a bit, "Uhh... sure, like that," he agreed, clearly having no idea what biogenetic theory was. Instead, he returned his attentions to his 'experiment', attempting once again to recombine the light. He was getting more and more successful, now able to hold three colors in place before he loses his 'grip' on another.

Re: Ozzy's Experiments

Iris observed her feed in silence, then commented, "Do you think the tubes are too loose? Light molecules are really miniscule; I'd imagine that they could slip away pretty easily if there's any hole in the woof and weave of the magical energy."
