Shooting Star's Place

Ariane's home is situated just outside of Weston's suburbs.  A pleasant three bedroom affair, it isn't anything attention calling.

Re: Shooting Star's Place

The young woman's voice was a vibrant, clear mezzo-soprano.  The acoustic twelve string guitar she strummed upon produced jangling and resonant chords, that accompanied the words she sang:

"City lights are calling
slowly coming back to life
Speeding in the fastlane
Mama let us waste no time

Devil in the doorway selling any kind of hell
We're just coming out to play the game

We never cry for love - we're superheroes
We are back where we belong
We never cry for pain - we're superheroes
Make a stand where we belong

Way too long I've tried to be
what I could never be..."

The phone. Of course.  It would be.  Anytime she was starting to relax.  It would only ring one more time, before it went to voice mail.  She should probably let it, and further enjoy her casual and relaxing morning.   But something nagged at her to at least check the caller ID.  And it often paid to listen to those little intuitive naggings - her aunt had taught her that, young.  Even when they did interrupt a nice, relaxing morning.

The phone was on the other side of the room. It would be a mad dash for most, to get it, before it went to voice mail. But, in what would be the blink of an eye for most human beings, Ariane had already placed her guitar carefully into it's stand, and arrived over at the phone, and eyed the caller ID. She was feeling a bit lethargic this morning.  That was the only reason it had taken her that long.

Jamie? Huh.  Before picking up the handset, she wondered what had prompted a communication she'd given up waiting for over four months ago.

"Hey Jamie. This is a surprise. So what's new?"

Re: Shooting Star's Place

"You're kidding me, right?"   She held the phone in her right hand. Her left hand parted a nearby curtain, so she could gaze outside.

She and Jamie Southan went all the way back to middle school. They had been best friends once, in what seemed like another lifetime, now.  Before a great many things had changed.  Just hearing her voice brought forth a deluge of memory.

Ariane sighed.  "Jamie - why?  What are you still doing with him?  You know he - "

The speedstress was interrupted at that point, then listened to a short list of justifications, from this person whom she wasn't certain she could still consider a friend.  But whom she nonetheless did still care about.  For some reason.

Nostalgia?

No- not exactly. It was memory of those times, in their childhood, when Jamie had been such a good friend.  Back when Ariane had been a chunky and bucktoothed misfit.  Those were memories she would always have in her heart.

Even if Jamie Southan had fallen far from the warm-hearted young girl she had once been.  Saving her from herself had been Ariane's crusade for years.  Finally, she'd had to walk away once it became sinkingly plain that Jamie didn't want to be saved...

"Okay, so he's been gone for twelve hours.  You know what kind of person he is.  Why does that - "

What Jamie told her next wasn't anything she expected to hear.
