The food was delivered to his table in fairly short order, freshly made and delicious smelling.  The portions were generous and he clearly wasn't paying for imitation quisine.

Outside of the door to Apokryphos was a sign that read. "Closed for private party, friends of the owner welcome". From inside a refined British voice can be heard. " I told him, George, we need to cross that river and I think this is the only way to do it."

Some may call it fate.  Others a superpower.  Whatever the case may be, Mittens has this knack for being at the wrong place at the right time.  Today, with two sets of badguys in other scenes, this strange knack lands her outside the Cafe... where nothing is happening that looks like a job for a superhero.  Doh!

"Does Mittens count as a friend?  Friendly acquaintance, at least.  But then there was that time when she was let in on secret meeting.  And also secret project.  So... trusted ally for sure.  But 'friend?'  Unsure.  If I knock and door is answered, person will be put in awkward position of having to turn away the kitty.  Aha!  Lightbulb!  Mittens came by to deliver a gift!  Not to invite self to private party.  If uninvited, will simply hand over gift and wish the party goers well.  No need for anyone to feel bad!"

Poof!  Mittens has a present in one hand, and with the other, she knocks on the door shave-and-a-haircut style.

  One of the wait staff answered the door, one who knew Mittens (she'd been working for Megs for several years now) and she said "Come on in, Mittens.  You're one of Miss Meg's regulars, and I know it."  She swung the door wide enough to let Mittens inside the cafe.  Almost all the long term staff were also residents of the apartments above, which was one reason they were staff.  Runaways, refugees, all of them had reasons to not want to go 'home', and Megs had set that up a long time ago to give those people chances to be respectable again.

"Thankieees!" the kitty lady answers in a cheerful, sing-song tone.

She steps inside, taking in the scene with more than just the usual senses.  She's been nonstop practicing the aura sight taught to her by Andy the other day, so there's that.  Not to mention the more tried-and-true Space Samurai 6th sense she's always got going.  Between all that, maybe she'll get a feel for what kinda awesome folks are being hosted here.

"Was seized by the random urge to give a gift to boss lady.  Saw the sign outside.  Now curious about the partay mentioned on the sign outside!"

Mits mutters, "Can't shake this uneasy feeling like someone I care about is in danger..."

Double-checking the phone for new texts or voice messages doesn't solve that mystery, though.

Upon entering Mittens saw banners stating "Happy 435th Ethan!" There was a variety of food and drink set up, and a crowd of eclectic looking people. Mittens recognized Mr. Hurt and Machine smith, there was also m any she does not recognize including an elderly nun and what looks like a 12 years old girl wearing a Victorian era dress and sipping a glass of whine. Ethan stood at the center of attention, with a dark haired woman of Greek descent on his arm.

Ah the adventures Mittens could have in over four centuries.  But Mittens knew a person who wasn't so happy about eternal youth, so there's that.  Its not the years in your life, its the life in your years, as the saying goes.  Oh... oops!  Mittens said gift for boss lady.  This'll require two gifts!  But most guys are pretty easy to get a gift for.  Just get 'em some favorite or exotic drink.  Poof.  Mittens now haz two gifts to give.

Upon seeing the eclectic gathering of familiar and unfamiliar, Mittens grins ear-to-ear.  So many awesome stories to hear!  Tucking the gifts under an arm, Mits uses the other to wave to the birthday boy as she approaches.

Brief them on the state of space and such?"

Many character flaws go into Mittens using minor telekinesis to grab a bite and a drink while she offers Ethan the gift she picked out for him.  Impatience with the doing one thing at a time, for one.  A childish instinct to want to impress the cool people present, especially Ethan, for another.  The foolishness to fail to realize she may be seen as showing off for a third.  And so on.  But Mittens is not one to let her character flaws get in the way of acting on impulse!

"Thankies!  Aand... Probably.  It was a joint thing with so many Men in Black from so many different agencies that it made my head spin.  Hard to tell who's who when they're all in BSL-5 biohazard suits."

Flashback:
"Aren't we done scanning me yet?!  What's this scan do that the dozen others before it didn't do?"

"That's classified.  And... you probably wouldn't want to know anyway.  It's pretty nightmarish."

"Oh.  Checking for chest-burster embryos or somesuch, then.  Well Mittens is happy to say that for all her many misadventures, the only time she ever experienced that unpleasant sort of thing was due to a hallucination, and not from an actual infestation.  Unless you count the flesh-eating fly that stung me here on Earth.  Super gross.  Locals kinda shrugged about it.  I swear the kinda nasties we have here on Earth rival most everything else in the Galaxy."


"Speaking of aliens, I hope you like this.  It's not from Earth, so probably something new even for Mr. Seenitall?"

Mittens smiles a youthful smile that seems strangely fitting for her youthful face.  "Far be it from Mittens to dismiss background or lab work as uninteresting.  One of my favorite scenes of The Great Mouse Detective was in the lab.  Sadly, Mittens is only just smart enough to barely get a passing grade in forensics class."

Is it technically cheating that the alien A.I. computer implanted in her skull grants her near perfect recall?  Probably.  Which is why she chose to temporarily disable that feature for the test.  Hence getting a C- instead of an A+.

"So I'm afraid you'll have to dumb things down to layperson's terms for me if any of your interesting stories include smart people stuff."

Mits loves the fan up the sleeve trick.  And manages to restrain herself from making puns about who is her biggest fan.

She lights up at the prospect of turning lead into chocolate.  "Oooh!  Alchemy!  Neat!  Hope it's not the kind unwittingly fueled by the tormented souls of an alternate timeline.  As for Spiritualism, Mittens just learned how to see spirit auras from a half-demon holy warrior!  And nonsense statements like that are the story of her life.  You may downplay your lack of knowledge, but you were able to deduce that Miss Adventure is famous.  Due to being on camera when the Alien Invaders attacked our fair city.  Super proud of the fact that I coined the term, 'Yokai Zords,' that's become the fallback title of our unannounced guests.

"Outside that?  Well, until recently, I'd get up to all sorts of weird adventures in outer space.  Mostly in the Milky Way, but sometimes in galaxies far far away.  Such as the time when the retro space fascists filed suit against the neo space fascists for trademark infringement, and Mittens was subpoenaed as a witness because she had combated them both.  'They copy absolutely everything, changing only their name and size of their planet-smasher, and think nobody notices!?  We demand they pay compensation!'  I can only hope my testimony in some way inconvenienced them both."

Mittens slides her foot and blushes bashfully upon being called a champion.  Then blink-blinks in surprise.  "How did she know Mittens knows sword stuff?  Is there some tell-tale posture?  Or maybe Mittens walks in a sword fighter sorta way?"

To the reaction about being a space woman, Mits looks apologetic.  "For someone who can teleport, Mittens spent entirely too much time cooped up inside one space-ship or another."

Flashback:
"I've been cooped up in this ship for far too long!"

"We've been flying for less than 10 minutes, Mittens."

"ENTIRELY TOO LONG!"  Poof!

"Hope she hasn't forgotten where we were going."


"This might surprise you, but Earth has most of the stuff that the rest of our Galaxy does, and plenty that it doesn't, just not to the same scale.  So excitement can be had aplenty right here at home."

"A bit of both. Those with combat training stand and walk differently from those that do not, and the different styles of training look different from each other. A sword master will walk differently from a boxer who will walk differently from a marksman."

Joan let out a light giggle at the apologetic look. "My dear in my day outer space wasn't even an option. I went to Faerie a few times, and once to the shadow plane but those were brief visits, not extended trips"
