In reply to Cyber-Shaman (msg # 55):

Dane shook his head. "Seems pretty simple. Get hired, be valuable, learn all their secrets and contacts, report back. And yeah, one question; what if they have a mind-reader? Do you have anything for that?"

"The implant will send off a signal that will make it difficult for a telepath to get much beyond surface thoughts. This sort of telepathic resistance can happen in both parahumans and humans naturally, so it won't be cause for alarm. Just keep yourself focused on basic emotions, happiness, lust, anger, things like that, and you'll be fine. If you're all set head down to the med bay and the Doc will get you set up with one."

In reply to Cyber-Shaman (msg # 57):

Dane nodded, and said, "Thanks." He turned and walked off, headed toward the Med Bay.

He footfalls barely echoed in the hallways. He was trained for stealth, and it was his natural default. He noticed everything as he passed en route to see the doctor, filed away for future reference.

He knocked on the door. "Doc? You have something for me?"

The doctor turned to look at him, and smiled as she said "Yes I do.  Please come over here and have a seat, we can do this with a little local anesthetic and it shouldn't be too hard.  The Director sent me the information that you're to have the sub-dermal holographic kit and the telepathic-shielding implanted.  Do you have any questions about the procedures?  We can also give you the top line comm implants, providing you don't mind being a cyborg to a degree?"

In reply to Staff Doctor (msg # 59):

Dane chuckled. "I had two things on my bucket list when I was about fifteen years old: date a supermodel, and become a cyborg. If you know any available supermodels, you'll have fulfilled all of my childhood dreams. So yeah, I'm fine with that."

He sat down in the chair, and laid his arm across the table. "I'll have to watch you or else you'll never be able to slice into me. Hazards of the condition, if 'hazards' is the right term."

He added. "Oh, please find a place with no tattoo. Some of those are special forces tattoos, and are earned with a lot of hard work, sweat, blood and sacrifice. I'd rather them not cut into, if you don't mind."

Re: Safehouse 17
She smiled, and moved to feel his upper arm, in the large muscle there, as she said "It's actually done like a needle punch, except the punch leaves the hologram emitters in your body instead of taking something out.  I can put one in your arm, here, and if there's any tattoos, I can also use the back of the shoulder.  The comm implant goes in the corner of your jaw, it's a slightly more complicated one, but again, local anesthetic, so I just have to numb your jaw to do it.  Almost like getting a tooth implant. The telepathic shielding is just a couple small slits in the scalp and I slide the implants in.  Unfortunately, we don't have any supermodels on staff, but one of the other doctors probably could pass for one if you wanted.  I just don't know if you'd want to date her."  Clearly, this Doc was flexible and had a sense of humor.

In reply to Staff Doctor (msg # 61):

Dane chuffed a laugh, and said, "Yeah, probably not. My life is not conducive to happy relationships. Never home, real threat of an untimely death, always a kidnap target. You know, the usual stuff. Although it would be nice to have someone to watch NCIS and Navy Seals with... who is also a supermodel. Maybe a supermodel cyborg? That would be an interesting twist!"

Then he grinned, and asked, as the doc worked on him, "So, the other supermodel doc... not right for me? Too smart? Two heads? Divorced with seven children? Blind? Pacifist? Hippie?"

Re: Safehouse 17
The doc shook her head, and said "No, she's under a 'death sentence'.  Nobody knows why she isn't already dead, she volunteered to participate in a limited human trial of a new medication, and she is literally the ONLY one of the volunteers who lived.  Every other person who actually got the drug they were testing, died in less than 24 hours.  And they can't get blood samples anymore to figure out why.  So she works with us.And she's got an unknown life expectancy, so she tends to be a little weird about being sociable."  She got out a tube of some sort of medication, laying it on a tray that held two large 'syringes' and several other items of high tech, and said "Okay, let me wash up and put on my gloves, and we can apply the locals so the skin goes numb, and then I can punch in your holo setup, then the shielding and comm sets.  You'll probably feel like you got a root canal done when I am finished, but since it's all done with the local anesthetics, you can watch everything I do, even if it is in a mirror."

Dane’s eyebrows rose. “Sounds like a perfect match. Two people with no expectation of living past the end of the day. I think I’ll look her up on the way out. What’s her name, and where can I find her?”

She chuckled, and said "Kerry Thompson, and she usually works for the University, covering Sports Medicine, but she works for us as needed."  She applied the gloves, having scrubbed her hands up to the elbows, then picked up the tube of local anesthetic.  She said "This is topical anesthetic, it will just numb the area I apply it to.  It will do for the holo implants and the shielding, but the comm implants will take a little more, so I will need to give you a small injection of local anesthetic.  No generals needed."

Dane chuckled. "Just so as you know, I have an extremely high pain threshold. You don't really need the anesthesia."

Then he added, "Is Dr. Thompson here today?"

She chuckled, and said "She's at the campus today, but you could stop over there.  And I don't like taking a chance to cause pain when I can numb the spot and do it without making you hurt more."  She put a dot on his arms where she wanted to put the holo units, and then picked the tube up.

Dane grinned. “Sounds perfect. ‘Hey, I’m Dane. My motto is, ‘For those about to die, I salute you.’ I hear you may be a short-timer too. Dinner tonight?’ Short, to the point, gives her a little glimpse of who I am, allows her the space to back out if she isn’t interested.”

He chuckled and shook his head. “Man, I should bottle this charm.”

Re: Safehouse 17
She said "Worst she could do is say no.  Give it a whirl.  Let me just get these implanted first though."  That said, she collected the 'punch' that she would use to pop in the holo units, applying a little bit of the numbing agent to his arms before she 'punched' them in, with the topical it didn't even hurt at all.  Then she asked "Ready to do the telepathic shielding?"

With his permission, she applied the numbing agent, then made small incisions in his scalp in four places to insert small, flat looking items which, he discovered, made his head feel a little like it had some sort of cotton not in it, but around it, almost muffling something he had never noticed being there before.

In reply to Staff Doctor (msg # 71):

Dane cocked his head, as if trying to hear something, a faint sound, and then he looked at the Doc. “That’s strange. When you put those things in, it got a whole lot quieter in here. Any chance you affected my actual hearing? It was like driving with the window down, and the quiet the follows when you roll it up. Anything I need to know?”

Re: Safehouse 17
She smiled, and said "Most humans don't have innate mindshielding, even if they aren't actively telepathic.  But most humans are slightly 'receptive', which is why a LOT of 'schizophrenics' aren't actually schizo, they're just very sensitive receptives.  They really ARE hearing voices, just not imaginary ones.  The active projective telepaths are a lot rarer, and any real range requires power, but that is why we offer the mindshields, so that if you ARE a latent, or low powered receptive, it gives you mental privacy, possibly for the first time in your life."

Re: Safehouse 17
She nodded, and said "Precisely.  Now, if you ARE any sort of active telepath, the mindshielding will keep you inside your own head too, so you won't be able to practice with it and make it stronger unless you develop innate personal mindshields."

In reply to Staff Doctor (msg # 75):

Dane considered this for a moment, and then said, “I’ll speak with the Director about some sort of less permanent installation. I think I would like to be able to work on those defenses, as you mentioned, but putting those strips in and taking them out again like contact lenses seems like it would be pretty annoying.”

Re: Safehouse 17
She shrugged, and said "Not for me, but you might get tired of it.  But you'll need your mindshielding for this assignment, because if they have a telepath, and you aren't shielded, they WILL get you.  So we can take those out later, but lets keep you alive until later arrives."

“Obviously.” He thought dryly to himself.

When the Doc was done, he stood up, ran and hand over his hair to cover the scars, and said, “We good?” It was clear he had exhausted his ability to sit in one place, and needed to move.

He gave her a tight smile. “I appreciate your help, Doc.”
