What is the scale of the map please?  Are they 2 yard hexes?

Thanks.

Great! Now there's enough PC's that I can play out my tragicomic death scene where the dragon sits on me because he's laughing so hard at my riddle.

oh, greetings to the new guy!

Whoops!  Moved from the main thread:

A question about distance.  Right now, is Olven 1 hex or two hexes away from Draconian 1?  He can't hit him with his Reach-2 spear without a penalty, right?  But he can hit Draconian 2, right?

Re: OOC

"Some weapons have a continuum of reaches; e.g., a spear with reach "1, 2" can strike targets either one or two yards away. An asterisk (*) next to reach means the weapon is awkward enough that it requires a Ready maneuver to change reach (e.g., between 1 and 2). Otherwise, you can strike at foes that are at any distance within the weapon's reach."

Two handed, as you mentioned, you may attack at 2 hexes, although if you or them close to 1 hex, you need a ready maneuver (costs an attack) to attack at the new distance (although there are skills that negate this rule- you may want to check your techniques to see if you have them).

Re: OOC

Olven uses a Long Spear, which has a 2,3 reach.  And no, I didn't buy the Quirk that lets me shift grips as a free action.  I should have, though.  There's a technique that allows you to strike at a shorter distance.  I should have bought that one, too.  Well, if I ever get CPs, and those are available, I'll take 'em.

Re: OOC

If we rotate the map 90 degrees and magnify it, it looks like this. Where K is Kar, W is Olven, 1 and 2 are draconians, ** is the wall, and bb the bench. Thus both 1 and 2 are 2 hexes away.

And more importantly, if Jarl hadn't moved away, there wouldn't have been a space into which Olven could have retreated. And then he would have been at one hex to 1 now.

 __ __ __
/ \__/**\__/**\
\_K/ \_2/ \__/
/ \__/ \__/ \
\_W/ \_1/ \__/
/bb\bb/bb\bb/bb\
\__/ \__/ \__/

I went with the simplified map because drawing the map for all of Lyceum at this scale would make it unwieldy, but restricting them to sections might be doable. I’ll have to look into that.

Re: OOC

Take a look at maptools. I think (I really need to get on that program myself and practice) you can save the map as an image, which you can then put on something like photobucket and post here. It is a free program, http://rptools.net/ and the little I do with it is excellent.

Re: OOC

I already have Campaign Cartographer 3, so if I wanted to do it that way I could. But since the original map is a published work, I don't want to do my own version and store it online.

I hope these text based images won't cause any trouble.

Re: OOC

You are allowed, depending on company, to share copyrighted maps like that in a forum such as this. I have it in writing from SJGames somewhere, and WotC has a similar policy that I'm pretty sure is carried over by Hasbro. If you don't mind my asking, what company is this from? Perhaps I can get permission if you're leery of using it on here and would like to.

Or, since I want to learn Maptools better anyhow, if you could shoot me a version of it, I can do it up in maptools for you. Not sure how quickly I'd do it, probably not too bad until the end of the year, but when I go back to work that sort of offer would of course need to take more time. (Too bad I can't install anything on work computers.) I'm pretty sure this is also legal, so long as I delete the stuff you send me. We'd only be using one at a time, and the new stuff would be my creation and not copyrighted.

Re: OOC

The map was published in a Dragonlance RPG book by Margaret Weis Productions (though I think they were still called Sovereign Press at that time). They published the book on license from WotC/Hasbro. But the adventure was an adaptation from a free adventure written by Tracy Hickman for AD&D, that he released on his own, to D&D3.5 and I don’t know if the map belongs to the original creator or to WotC/Hasbro. And as I don’t have my books with me, I cannot check that either.

The map is drawn for d20 and thus divided into squares rather than hexes. I’ve already done a “dot version” of it. I don’t have a digital copy of the original map. And I wouldn’t share the GM map with a player, as doing so would give him information he is not supposed to have. This information would invariably either be abused or it would stem the player’s creativity. And I don't want either of those things to happen.

Re: OOC

Ooo, thanks for the hex map, DD.  I might have to ask you for clarification later, too.

Maptools really is a nice little piece of work.  Here's a battle map from another game I play in:

http://i55.tinypic.com/29vapw1.png

And yeah, you can save it.  It would be tough to do it for the whole Lyceum, though.

Re: OOC

Ah, thanks. I didn't figure that out about #4. Too much in a hurry?

Anyhow, WotC, and Weis (I asked for Serenity) both allow digital sharing for a game such as this, where it is not public and you need to be a member to use it. This is basically the same as tabletop sharing, and if you don't abuse it, it's allowed but doesn't have to be. With the first part freely distrubuted, I'm not even sure it matters, but it's all legal if you want to post it here.

If you want to do a 'fog of war' sort of thing, you can actually scan the pic in, import to maptools, turn on vision so it only shows what we can see with our light sources, or turn on fog of war so we can only see what the GM desires. Then, you may overlay a hex grid if you feel like, or use the square already there, and export the finished product as an image.

Not neccesarily the easiest solution, but it might be better than the text version, although I don't mind it- you do a good job with it.

Re: OOC

I don't have access to a scanner, so that isn't a possibility. But I'll look into what I can do when I have all the pieces in one place again.

For Kar, Olven, Owain, and Tarhall, (as well as Handar, though he's out of the game for now) who participated in the Summoned to the King thread, your first cp awards are posted in the second to last post in that thread.

Hopefully you'll get your CPs for Lupus Veritas this weekend. Those will be posted in that thread.

Re: OOC

From the House Rules thread:

Spending Awarded Character Points: If you want to improve something you already have, just PM me for my approval. If you want to learn something new, you have to find a teacher first. How long you have to study with the teacher before you can use awarded points will likely vary, but skills will be enough to earn 1 CP in that skill, or usually 200 hours.

Other than that, you can spend CP any time you like.

Thanks.

Re: OOC

All CP award is to the character, so even if another player has controled the character previously, all awarded cp remain with the character. In other words, it's all yours.
