The Return of the King

Frodo and Sam, still in the heart of Mordor, have given up all hope of survival. As they talk quietly below the ruin of Mount Doom, Radagast, in the form of a great eagle, spots them. He sweeps down and lifts the hobbits into the air.

When Sam wakes, he finds himself on a soft bed in Ithilien, the eastern lands of Gondor. He first comments on the extraordinary dream he has just had and then cries out in astonishment that his dream actually happened. Frodo sleeps next to Sam, and Radagast watches over the two of them. The wizard says that a great Shadow has departed, asks the hobbits to dress in their worn and ragged attire, and escorts them out of the wood. They are to attend a reception hosted by the King of Gondor.

A great throng of people awaits the hobbits. At their emergence, the crowd bursts into thunderous applause, singing songs in praise of the hobbits. Frodo and Sam approach a great throne, where Aragorn welcomes them. He lifts them and sets them on the throne, and the joy of the people flows over them like a warm wind. In a regal ceremony, Frodo bequeaths his knife Sting to Sam, who initially resists but finally accepts the gift. That evening, Frodo and Sam attend a generous feast. They reunite with their old companions.

The Return of the King

"Frodo, Sam, thank you so much!" Folco greeted with a relieved, but happy voice, as he approached the pair and embraced them both at the same time.  "You have saved us all.  You had us really worried there for a while."

"Folco!" Sam called.  "Where are the others?!"

At that moment Merry and Pippen appeared, likewise as jovial and bursting with joy as Folco.  Behind them, looking every bit the regal Elf-lord that he was, was Glorfindel.  Next to him stood Odin, his mail glittering like stars.  Faramir was sitting with the Lady Éowyn by Aragorn and Radagast stood behind.

Folco knew that answered Sam's question, and so did not need to directly respond.  Instead he said, "Well my friends, it looks like we all made it through.  I always knew we would," he added with false bravado.

"We couldn't have done it without you Folco," Frodo said while Sam eyed the much taller Pippin and Merry.

"Oh it was nothing," Folco said modestly.  A tear started to roll down his cheek: a feeling of being overwhelmed with everything being over, as well as finally being able to realize how close they had all come to death.

The Return of the King

Their revelry lasted into the night but not too late as Aragorn prepared to enter the city the next morning as King.

* * * *

In the morning, when Aragorn returned, Faramir rode out of the gate of Minas Tirith and offered him the keys of the city and an ancient crown. To everyone’s amazement, Aragorn called for the Ring-bearer and Gandalf. Frodo handed the crown to Gandalf, who placed it upon Aragorn’s brow.

Folco simply said "Such ceremony," amazed at the spectacle.

The Return of the King

Over the following days the city of Minas Tirith begins to revive. Its walls are restored, and the city is filled with trees, fountains, and laughter. Ambassadors from many lands arrive in Gondor, and Aragorn shows mercy by pardoning the Easterlings who surrender, making peace with Harad, and giving the slaves of Mordor their own land around Lake Núrnen. He also hears the case of Beregond, who deserted his post to save Faramir's life.  Aragorn tells Beregond that, for his crimes, he has to leave his post in Minas Tirith.  Instead, he will now be a member of the White Company, the Guard of Faramir, Prince of Ithilien. Beregond is thrilled to be joining his lord, Faramir.  Éomer and Aragorn part with deep friendship, as Éomer heads back to Rohan to put things in order on the home front.  Éowyn goes with Éomer to await the funeral of her uncle but plans to come back to Faramir.

On May 8th, the Riders of Rohan leave the city, along with Elladan and Elrohir.  Aragorn asks the hobbits, Legolas, and Gimli to wait for a bit to witness the one thing he has been dreaming of all of his adulthood. But he won't say what that is.

OOC Any comments?

The Return of the King

"Now don't get me wrong, Frodo," Folco said to the other hobbit.  "I don't mind spending more time here in Minas Tirith.  It's a beautiful city."  Folco paced the room as he spoke.  "But if we don't find out what it is we're waiting for soon, I'm going to go crazy!"

Frodo chuckled to himself.

"You were always restless," he replied.  "Is there anywhere in the city you'd like to visit?  I'm sure Pippin could show us around."

"Well let's go find him then.  If there is an archery practice range, I should certainly like to see that and take a few shots.  Or at least he could take us to see the towers that overlook the city."
