In reply to Alouette (msg #929):

Cantrell is making some terrible terrible death trap which he'll wake up CB to explain the brilliants of the doom in which he's facing and then Cantrell will leave.... yep totally what's going to happen.

Or he's just going to shoot CB in the head and call it a day.

<channeling Bill Murray>

Dr. Oswald Franklin:
"<I do indeed have devices, and will take the pictures of your warriors for you. However, it will not protect them from harm, as that is not how it works. It is the image of how they are at that moment, nothing more.>"

Dr. Franklin, when a crazy hateful Indian asks you if you can take magical pictures of his warrior braves that will prevent them from being injured...  YOU SAY YES!

</Bill Murray>

RE:  Cantrell

Yeah not only does he start a fight, harm the prisoners he's supposed to be guarding, and then let one of them escape while he sets up a death trap...

The problem is he's going to lie about what happened and make it sound good.  CB will then either be forced to lie to compete with his lie, or he'll tell the truth and it will sound bad in comparison to the lie, and there will be no proof of it either way as the only possible witnesses are both hostile and completely unreliable.

In the back of her mind Wildcat knew Cantrell would probably kick RTT in the guts a couple of times and something untoward would likely happen, but this is well outside what she was willing to overlook in the name of keeping Cantrell and the Jellicles occupied while the siege of Blackthorn was dealt with.  Again though the trouble is he'll lie about it.

She'll be hopping mad and she'll know he did something, but Wildcat won't be able to do anything about it.

Probably this, except for the whole "leaving" thing. Cantrell would watch, if only to ensure CB knows just how thoroughly Cantrell has won. He's kinda arrogant like that.

And Cantrell doesn't have to lie that much...Charging Bear was the one who started shooting first. And then the prisoners attacked them both, and he had to deal with them in a forceful manner in order to prevent them from escaping. They're still worth the bounty to him dead, after all (even CB).

Re: Tall tales

That sounds far more romantic than being gutted and left to suffocate in a bank vault should warrant.

To be fair, Cantrell can't run very fast at present, but since he was shooting people anyway she really wouldn't have made much of a difference - she can smack him for that. Should probably have told him he had the wrong Charging Bear, though, since for all his supposed mercenary nature Cantrell seems to like the concept of legitimacy (understandable, since it takes a free man to be an independant tool of the law).

[thought] ...did we ever find Deputy Fuller?

Which is why he isn't doing that...

Huh? Granted, he's preoccupied with setting up his Doom Room, but Cantrell can run just fine.

Also, he was told, but he doesn't consider what she has to be proof, and still wants to haul him before a judge (preferably a racist one that will hang CB out of hand). Remember that Cantrell has deep personal resentment for CB for getting him kicked out of his cushy Army position.

The only character who has is Robert, who seems to have vanished into RL Busy. But Jericho is about to stumble on him...

Re: Tall tales

Eh, I figured it was just the ennui of combat.  Don't get me wrong we needed this fight with all these characters involved (I actually took advantage of it to throw in a little personal scene Wildcat needed that will make her life easier going forward), but it just takes a while to resolve it all.

Hmmmm... a lot of bad options.

Query.

Is the Notice roll a one time event.  Or something you can make every round at your election?

Re: Tall tales

Indeed. It looks mighty grim for our heroes...most have spent their chips in other conflicts. I have 1 red and 1 white in my pool, and both Danny and the Mayor have 2 white chips left. John and Adrian still have chips and Adventure Cards available. Jake can still spend an Adventure Card on his own behalf, as can Alouette, and I don't think Wildcat has spent any cards yet.

Here's what I'm going to do: I'm waiving any chip cost on Adventure Cards used in the mob fight. You still only get to use one card per character, but you don't have to worry about not having the chips to spend them. If you spend one that would give me a chip if you spent a RC on it, I still get the chip, but having cards for free should be helpful.

Re: Tall tales

He all knows...and you would - you'll be about to pick up the tasty flambéd PC pieces afterwards...Adrain? JohnJohn? Wildkitten?

I make my case:
quote:
- The card changes the current situation, in which the party is about to lose its readily expendable bellringer and possibly its leading force (Wildcat) and a potential bridge to the largely alienated townsfolk (Adrian). These characters may still be in danger, but it's less of a focused certainty.
- We know IC the Comanche are liable to appear at or around sunset - that is, about two hours - and OOC that they're currently busy, so they won't be the situation escaped into.
- The Mayor is annoyingly invisible, and outranks us, with powers to match. [wheedle] Don't y'all want to see the Mayor rendered temporarily ineffective by some hiderance - perhaps long enough to strike one good blow?
- Curiousity as to what could possibly be worse than the current situation (except being CB right now).

Re: Tall tales

I have no idea, because all the card does is trade one bad thing for another.  Wildcat's main issue here is that these people who did nothing wrong are in danger.

Other comical news:  a comically oversized (relative to what I ordered) box was delivered to me today at work.  I carried the box up to shove it under my desk until I could take it home.  But upon realizing the box was huge and mostly empty, I removed the contents and sat the empty box on the desk to throw in the bin on my way out today.

Now what I ordered were in fact three knives.  Christmas presents you see.  I'm jealous of the recipient of the kitchen petty with its ivory micarta handle and convex grind profile, it's a lovely blade, a high end production model that's comparable to a custom piece, and I salivate thinking of what you could slice with it.  A professional chef may think it was bollocks but I digress.

Someone walked by, saw the huge box and inquired what's in there.  To which I responded.

"All the knives I ordered.  Here check it out, isn't this pretty?"  And showed them the lovely kitchen petty.

The look I got was just fantastic.  Apparently being in possession of mid to high range kitchen knives in such quantity (even when in reality you've but three) is considered to be odd.

Re: Tall tales

Eh, belike they'd still be in danger - but not from us. That's the psychological torment added to the direness that cripples most of the party's effectiveness. [wheedle wheedle]

Box! I thought you were going to say it was sitting-in big, those are the Best Boxes. Though I do not know what one would do with a sitting-in box full of knives. Except not sit in it.

Re: Tall tales

Indeed. It's like the garbage chute thing. You're still in danger, but the situation changes to something hopefully not as damaging to the party's reputation as taking out mind-controlled townsfolk. Might even give Wildcat a chance to use that Folk Hero card she's been saving.

Also, knives! I sold knives door-to-door one summer. It was an interesting gig, but i don't think I ever got the "oh dear lord crazy person with knives!" look from anyone despite carrying a bag full of sharp implements.

In other news I'm being bugged by the prompter to note that this thread is nearing 1000 posts and should be closed soon.

Re: Tall tales

No-one pays any attention when I carry a 30cm-odd blade about at work (it was lying about in the finds cabin and some larger samples require rubble sacks that're scary murder to try and get the tags off from with scissors or a wee blade), but then they're usually doing things like getting the spare blades out of their stanley on the kitchen table amongst the edibles or using dentist's tools to free cremated bone lodged in dried peat, so.

Anyway! Angels, crows and too high a fear level, anyone not seen this yet?
