Re: Remember, remember, the 5th of November...

No-one particularly cares about him: November/equinox-effigy-wise, before Guy, they used to burn the Pope: before the Pope, they used to burn the witches: before the witches, they used to burn an effigy that stood in for a sacrifice, and before that...it depends whether you take the Romans' word for things. Bonfire night is an unpopular king's highjacking of a tradition already highjacked by the Church to legitimise the peasants' refusal to give up their "please bring the sun back!" new year's festival (the Celtic* year starts in the night, both literally and seasonally, the equinox being the "sunset" of the old one).
No, if you want the biggest hero/villan in England, it's Nolly** Cromwell. "Right but repulsive". Amazingly canny guy, brilliant tactician and revoloutionary, dared to do the unthinkable and openly raise an axe to then-divine flesh of the king (yes, to some people at the time, he went one step down from trying to kill God)...also a psycopathic religious fanatic who hated anyone having fun and ruled with an iron fist. The people went and found a king to rule them after that, though the ultimate power of the monarchy was broken.
*NB whatever Miranda Green says, there never was a "Celtic" culture except to sell souvenirs, the word means something like "European" or "Moorish", relating to several broadly similar cultures.
**Nol is a shortening of Oliver over here.
