Happy belated birthday! Gonna be a little slow but hopefully will catch up tonight. More dreaded business travel.

On Phenomena

I swear this is not me (I can't knit, for a start):
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-s...ey-shetland-18633867

...but noting that the phenomenon apparently started in Texas and recalling my hero worship of the guy on the cover of The Manly Art of Knitting my imagination is taken with the idea of a band of iron-jawed, steely-eyed Texas cowboys who have vowed to bring the joy of knitwear to the very corners of the earth, Kirkwall included. This is surely the most plausible explanation.

Intimidating a vampire - and failing the attempt - is a severe health risk. Ask William, he learned the hard way that you're always polite to fangsters.

Re: On Phenomena

I dunno, I suspect Vinny's the type that bites when threatened.

Then again, so's Carl...hey, maybe if Carl breaks skin before Vinny reduces him to itty bitty pieces Vincent will find himself changing, consumed by a weird and unnatural urge! ...to herd cows, talk in a slow drawl and be nice to horses.

Meanwhile, Jake's pragmatisim and anachronistic monster/scientist confusion amuses me no end.

In reply to Alouette (msg # 248):

I double checked to make sure Frankenstein had already been published before making the reference ... it was published in 1818, plenty of time to make its way to the U/CSofA

Re: On Phenomena

Aye, but people only started thinking the nameless monster was called "Frankenstein" after Boris Karloff as said monster appeared on posters screaming "FRANKENSTEIN", causing folk to confuse the two...Frankenstein in the book is about Jake's build and prone to nervous breakdowns, the poor faintly incestuous daftie, wheras the monster is an uncanny valley-inducing yellowy-grey dude built on a statuesque scale.

On a tangent, my undergraduate dissertation supervisor worked on the initial excavation of the laboratory complex of Crosse, the English scientist who inspired Frankenstein. He had a "lightning-collecting" device! Nothing above-ground, but the geophysical survey shows the place up as just a mass of metallic stuffs and funny buisiness.

Re: On Phenomena

Nuuu, it (and justifying on the fly) is what alternate universes are for! (plus it is funny)

I'm pretty sure someone in the Deadlandsverse has whipped up something like Lurch before and called it a "Frankenstein man", you know, like the thing with the Coke and the...whatever you call plasters (as in what you stick on cuts) that is also a brand name but I can't remember at present.

Those! My brain kept coming up with "elastoplast", but I don't think you even have that brand.

@Adrian: I shall teach you an idiom, so you can tell Frenchmen how bad a fight is: une cause de sparadrap - "a thing that requires/will require plus plus bandaids" (loose translation).

Thanks, Alouette :)

I will attempt to keep that in mind, guarding against the unlikely event in which I run into any Frenchmen and I need to communicate with them about rough fights.

Be prepared, as it said on the scout buckle recovered from the alligator swamp.

Charging Bear:
"Why did I think for an instant this would be simple?" the native son questions quietly to himself as he watches the strange birds and decides what he should do. Charging Bear looks for something he could use to drive he birds away, a large branch perhaps.
