Self is busy also...but I had to share yesterday's quote of the day here. The Ness of Brodgar is part of a UNESCO/World Heritage site and is incredibly important for understanding the Neolithic in general, so we get lots of international students and volunteers coming to dig, including one great big fellow with a hefty handshake who declared:

"I got this grip fighting bears - it's what makes me American!"

...so Stray, it is official now, you can no longer deny it.

You're talking like Alouette now LOL.

I have to admit, Alouette-speak is kind of infectious. I'm occasionally tempted to use it in character.

You know, at that time in the morning I couldn't even tell you if it was intentional or not.

It is! Heh, I do like how Adrian's been gamely trying to communicate with the clank on its own terms and I wouldn't be entirely surprised if the odd +/- slipped into his speech patterns, no...maybe he can become an approximate-interpreter between it and Wildcat, or just translate when the clank attempts to use the Ranger's idioms...

Well, I have had for some weeks a planned line for him to say in clank-speak. We'll just have to see whether or not the opportunity to use it actually comes up in character.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks 'ah, that'd be some fine phrasing' and hoards it sometimes.

The clank adores AUG-US-TUS, like he's a comprehensable Evans or possibly its mother, I do hope they meet up again...a rare instance where Science loves you back!

I think I might have missed and/or forgotten something pretty significant here.

What's the deal with Wildcat's Ghost? Is the Ranger dead? Is someone else playing Wildcat while the player is away? These are the possibilities that immediately occur to me.

The Ranger liveth!

The Stray just really really didn't want to ghost a character as strong/noisy/idiosyncratic as Wildcat, so he made a copy of her stats so's I can collaborate in posts for her until she gets back, without giving me GM powers or locking her player out. She's still temporarily an NPC for now.

...so yes, there's two of us trying to work out Wildcat-speak at present and neither have quite managed yet. [amused by this]

while Murphy was blessed by the priest, that blessing unfortunately does not extend to his gun.

Question: does this mean Murphy slaps are currently super effective against vampires whilst his lead is not?

Re: !!!

I don't think I trust the Modern Man, he looks like he means to stab that wool with his handful of needles until it maybe turns into something...which in turn reminds me of a book obtained by my uncle in his youth, now owned by my mother:

...which turned out not to be about how to be a hit with the young ladies in the American style, but a book on how to turn things like curtains into dresses that looked like they were made out of curtains etc. The knitted beachwear section may have scarred me for life, but I will also forever remember the large caption beneath a picture of a young lady wearing something that had probably been a blanket or a throw rug at one point in its existence:

"A PONCHO IS NOT JUST A GARMENT. IT IS A WAY OF LIFE."

Words to live by.

Considering Murphy Slaps cure psychological trauma, now'd be the best time to apply them!

*SLAP!*
"The Blessit Ranger Hawkins can hurt me because I am a bad person. And I like-"

*SLAP!*
"-and I want to reform, it's just that the world seemed dark and awful and I should-"

*SLAP!*
"My mother never loved me!"
*SLAP!*

[Vinny surrenders]

...I hope Wildcat's player'll forgive me the liberty of playing up about the only thing the character feels secure expressing humility over, but staring down a vampire, what're you gonna do?

edit: [of Shakens] No...Vinny was Shaken, then he got hit for a Wound and a Shaken, but...the second injury-shaking doesn't count 'cause it came later? I need to go to work, though...

Re: !!!

O.o

Alrighty then...

SWD rulebook:
Applying Damage
The damage of an attack is compared to the victim’s Toughness just like a Trait roll (though it isn’t one so you can’t spend a Benny on it). With a success, the victim is Shaken. For each raise over his Toughness he suffers a wound as well, as shown below:
• Success: The character is Shaken. If he was already Shaken, he suffers a wound and remains Shaken. To cause a wound, the latter Shaken result must come from a physical attack of some kind—not a Test of Wills or other maneuver.
• Raise: The character suffers a wound for every raise on the damage roll, and is Shaken. (When wounds are caused, it doesn’t matter if the victim was already Shaken beforehand.)

Example: A barbarian hits an ogre with a Toughness of 11. The barbarian’s friend, a rogue, has already taunted the beast (a Test of Wills, see page 75) and Shaken it.

If the barbarian’s damage is 11-14, that’s a success and would normally Shake the ogre. Since it’s already Shaken, he suffers a wound and remains Shaken.

If the barbarian’s damage is 15+—a raise or more—he’d simply cause wounds. The ogre is already Shaken, and since a wound was caused, there’s no further effect.

That actually makes things less clear, but it's all right, I figured it out at work when I was actually awake and so on - it is timing.

Meanwhile, poor Wildcat fails to catch the bad guys once again...

That's because she's a Ranger.  Rangers don't always catch the bad guys.  Mounties on the other hand "always get their man"
(not actually their motto, but oft noted)

...or their sasquatch, but yes! Yay for mountie organisation! ...although if there was one in Deadlands' Texas, they'd be very lost (or possibly very very determined to get that man...now there's a character concept for fun and confusion).

It's just Wildcat...well, the only person she's arrested in-game who's stayed under arrest more than 2-3 hours was Charging Bear. Who didn't do anything.

Re: !!!

I think they might actually cover the Mounties in the Weird White North sourcebook...I'd have to reread it to be sure. I'm sure they exist, and I'm pretty sure they're analogs of the Rangers and the Agency, but I have no other details on them.

Yeah, it's almost enough to make someone start shooting things...I think chasing the vampire away is still a victory, though. Or at least gives Blackthorn one less thing to worry about.

Re: !!!

In the Classic supplement called The Great Weird North, Mounties are covered in a small amount of detail (there's a one page write up about them, and an archetype page). To quote the book, "they've become the Canadian equivalent to the Texas Rangers, except that the Mounties have fewer men, usually operate solo, and are charged primarily to study any strange events and report back. They only interfere when human lives are at risk, which of course, is often the case." They sometimes serve as judges in some proceedings, and are well respected almost universally (in Canada) even by the Indian tribes.

That book is mostly a location sourcebook for conducting Deadlands adventures in Canada, so they're presented in that context.
