Re: Chapter 16.2: The Price of Power
"Marshal, this man here is a loose cannon. You don't want nobody as a Deputy that's just gonna walk around and start shootin' whoever he damn well pleases whenever he damn well wants to - a man that keeps company with cold blooded murderers, and probably is little better than one himself," he said at Pierce's suggestion that he be sworn in.
"As for the rest," he said, turning to Pierce, "Gus Shaw was an acquaintance of mine many years ago 'fore I left Blackthorn. I didn't know him that well, and I can't never say we was friends as such. For what I did know him for, he ain't near the same man as he used to be. I don't know what came over him since I left, but it's somethin' awful." He paused before continuing, but only long enough to wet his lips. At most times a quiet fellow, he wasn't used to talking this much.
"To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what yer askin' but I'll take a gander at it. In most situations, on most days, if I saw you out in the street tryin' to do for Gus Shaw - after what happened back at the saloon I'd prolly join forces with him against you. Not like there's much choice in it, for me at least - maybe there would be for you. A man must have a code...if he's a man at all." He exhaled deeply, and went on.
"This is turning out much differently than I thought it would earlier. Earlier, just before we stood down, I would have jumped on Gus's side against you in a heartbeat. If that's what he was comin' back for, it woulda been a little more complicated, but at least then there would have been some room for discussion. Gus Shaw has made his own choices, and his decision is to try and do in the Marshal and Alouette, and the rest of us too, if he has to. He's taken away any grounds for trying to persuade anybody to spare his life. I might have spoken to our resident steel angel here about whether or not there was any possibility of salvation for the man, but that's no longer a tool in my arsenal I think. So for this day, and this moment, if you're going to try and settle this with Gus man to man, I think that might be for the best."
After a moment he added, "that means I'm not gonna shoot you in back while you're at it."
Reaching into his pocket, he withdrew a deck of cards and began to shuffle them around. He'd flip open a card every once in a while and look at it and then shuffle it back into the deck. After a while, he put his cards away. For a moment, he clutched the badge that he had found earlier in the day, and then just leaned against the wall with his hands at his sides in contemplation.
