Summer 1158
A mouse steps out of the shadows wrapped in a brown cloak, and Ambrosia sees her brother Hyas before her. But instead of the dashing young guardmouse from her memory, Hyas is drawn and emaciated, with a slight but noticeable tremor. He gives a wry smile.

"I'm afraid so" he answers.

Summer 1158
Ambrosia steps forward to give Hyas a quick, gentle hug.  "It's good to see you.  You look better than I'd come to expect," she points out, smiling.  "Fewer worms, no rotting... a lot less dead, overall.  Do you have somewhere safer to talk?"

Summer 1158
Silently, Owen backs up a few steps into the alley and crouches in the shadows.  From this position it difficult to see him, but he has a good view of the street.  He catches some of the conversation between Ambrosia and Hyas, but cannot allow himself to be distracted enough to focus on it.  He pulls his dark green cloak around him and sniffs the air cautiously.  Something was making his brother in law nervous and Owen has enough good sense to know he likely has good reason.

Hyas hugs you back briefly. "I have a room nearby" He looks Owen up and down, and appears to approve. "I guess you can come too"

Will post Hyas' story in a day or two. Less than a week, certainly ;)

Owen nods, biting back a retort.  He hadn't considered letting Ambrosia go without him for even a second, but bickering with Hyas wasn't productive, and besides, regardless of anything else, he was Ambrosia's brother and she dearly loved him.  Hyas clearly was frightened and needed help.  It was far more important to gain his trust so they could figure out how to aid him, and to protect Ambrosia from whatever he was mixed up in.  That was worth swallowing some pride.

"Right then, lead the way, I'll guard our backs," he replied curtly.

Re: Summer 1158
Hyas leads you swiftly into the least salubrious part of Port Sumac to his lodgings, a single room on the ground floor of a run-down tenement with a pervasive smell of fish. His room is spartan but clean, and there is barely enough space for all of you to stand and only the bed to sit down on. Without preamble Hyas starts to tell his tale.

Hyas, one of the most celebrated mouse guard novices in recent years, was assigned to a senior position in the Rustleaf garrison. His captain was an oldfur close to retirement who was happy to let Hyas run things without interference. His future was bright. However, on a mission beyond the scent barrier, Hyas was badly wounded by a falling tree. His squad brought him safely back to Rustleaf, but his leg healed badly and Hyas was in constant pain. It was then he was introduced to a drug, a pain killer suggested by a friendly merchant. Hyas could ignore his wound and perform his duties with even more energy than before. But it soon became apparent that the drug was horribly addictive and the merchant an unscrupulous criminal, and this is where Hyas' fall from grace started. Step by step, Hyas was changed from an outstanding guardmouse to a corrupt and cynical enforcer and addict, realising too late that the "favours" he had done in exchange for his supply would lead to his disgrace and imprisonment if ever the merchant ever chose to expose him...

This is part one of his story. You can jump in now with questions and/or comments.

Re: Summer 1158
Owen kept track of where they were being led, and made mental notes as to how to find his way back out again.  Years of being a pathfinder had ingrained it into him until it was pure instinct now.  They were in the dangerous parts of Port Sumac, which had not escaped his notice, and clearly Hyas was afraid of being followed.  Owen was wise enough to be concerned as well, and to watch for any signs of pursuit.

Once they had slipped inside the, rather dismal apartment, Owen stays near the door, crossing his arms and listening intently as Hyas relates his story.  As his unfortunate brother in law relates his downfall from grace, the old Pathfinder does feel a pang of sympathy for him.  Clearly Hyas should have been suspicious of any curative that worked quite so well, and of anyone offering such a wondrous cure.  Still he did not deserve to have been so completely manipulated.  If there was one thing Owen had no tolerance for, it was being used.

"What do you know of this merchant?"
Owen asked quietly when Hyas paused in his story.

Ambrosia listens in silence, watching Hyas without a trace of pity.  Rather, her expression holds an understanding.  He has been trapped in a different darkness than she and Owen were, but still she sees a kinship to it.  When he pauses, she waits, not yet certain that this is what they are here for.

Re: Summer 1158
Hyas twitches his whiskers in annoyance when Owen interjects. "I'm coming to that"

After a while Hyas' activities on behalf of the merchant became harder to conceal from the guard, so one day Hyas did not report for duty and went entirely underground, hating himself and his addiction but unable to stop. This was Hyas' sad life, until around six months ago a new criminal gang started to muscle in on the merchant's territory, selling an even more addictive and destructive drug and using extreme violence to take care of the competition. The merchant's power base was eroded, and then two weeks ago the merchant was killed. But the new gang had a use for Hyas. For some reason they were fixated on Ambrosia and Owen - they wanted Hyas to contact you and lead you into a trap. So he fled, and came here to warn you.

Re: Summer 1158
Owen grows increasingly concerned as Hyas story unravels.  He peeks out from behind the curtained window, scanning the street for any activity.  He was now more certain than ever that coming here was a colossal mistake!

"And, by bringing us here, this gang now has us all in one convenient place where we will be at their mercy, or lack thereof.  Hyas are you truly that much of a fool?  They've undoubtedly shadowed us at a distance and will be here very soon.  You've not only managed to dive from the frying pan straight into the fire, but you've brought your sister and I along for company!  If you were not my wife's brother..."

He spins around, locking eyes with his wise wife and choking down his anger.  There would be time later for reciminations...or at least he hoped there would be.  As he spoke, he began to push furniture in front of the door.

"Ambrosia my love, we need to find a way out of here as swiftly as possible."
He was relatively certain he did not need to tell her this of course, but he was thinking out loud, his mind racing.

"Is there, by any chance, a back way out of this place, Hyas?"

"Don't worry oldfur, there's not a mouse alive who can track me" says Hyas hotly, a touch of his old pride shining through. "They're not outside. But they might be in Port Sumac already. Wasn't hard for me to mark you arriving, and others may have had their eyes on the dock as well as me"

Re: Summer 1158
Owen gave Hyas a dark look, unfazed by the younger mouse's moment of bravado.  He felt his heart hammer in his chest as he realized just how much danger his brother in law might have put them all in.  He clenched his fists, whiskers quivering as he replied.

"You'll forgive me if I don't take your word for it, Hyas!  I'm an expert tracker and you're not as savvy as you think you are!  I'm certain this is a very carefully laid trap and we've taken the bait."  He made no attempt to disguise the cold anger in his voice anymore, struggling to control his urge to punch the former guard mouse.

He instead turned his anger into action, finishing his barricade of the front door.  If they wanted to get in he'd not make it easy for them at least.  Moving quickly to his beloved wife's side, he took her gentle white paws in his own and looked into her eyes.

"My love, you have to trust me; we need to leave now.  We need to find somewhere safe until we can figure out what to do.  Help me find another way out, please?"

"I trust you," Ambrosia answers without hesitation.  "If we were followed, you would have seen them.  You were watching," she reminds him, gently, meeting his eyes and squeezing his hands reassuringly.  "Breathe, beloved.  Think.  Did you see anyone too many times?  Too close to the bar and also too close to here?"

Wracking his brain, Owen tries hard to recall: did someone sit too close or linger for too long?  Did anyone seem suspicious or show up more than once.

OOC: He has both Scout 4 Grey Mouser.  Can he roll to determine if there was anyone who seemed suspiciously interested in them, or to be stalking  them?

Owen is fairly sure that no-one has been taking a particular interest in you since you arrived. Hyas stands up abruptly. "So, I've warned you now. Best that you leave Port Sumac as soon as you can and lay low for a while"

Ambrosia smiles, nodding.  "Or we can stay here.  I'm hard pressed to think of anyplace much lower we could lay.  But truthfully, Hyas, it seems to me this issue is going to have to be addressed.  We're not that hard to find, and while we could disappear, there are people who would be hurt in the seeking."

She looks at the two thoughtfully.  "They'll likely assume you warned us.  Leaning on you could only have been a calculated risk.  I wish we knew why they were interested.  Their methods certainly imply that whatever they want from us isn't anything we'd willingly give, but it still might help to know.  Did you glean anything?  Could you even guess?" she asks Hyas.

Hyas is silent for a moment, and almost seems reluctant to meet his sister's earnest gaze.

"Something dark is my guess. We can stay here tonight, but they will soon know you came here - you weren't taking any particular pains to travel incognito"

Re: Summer 1158
"Alright, we'll stay here...I've got the door barricaded already; you're welcome."

He bit back the retort he was going to make to Hyas.  He wanted so badly to shake his foolhardy brother in law until his wits returned, but that wouldn't help anything.  Besides his better angels reminded him he didn't know everything Hyas had been through, it probably had changed him.  He was more worthy of pity than petty anger.  Owen knew full well the agony of feeling helpless.

He sniffed around, checking to see if there was any other way to gain entry: windows, trap doors, weak points in the roof or walls.  Satisfied, he returned to Ambrosia and nodded to her that all was secure.  He was, as always, grateful for his wise wife; he depended on her guidance as he had for years now.  He knew she'd figure out how to get them safely out of this mess, if anyone could.

"I'll take watch, beloved.  You and your brother get some sleep, we're going to need it."

Ambrosia shrugs.  "You just said to come alone," she points out, just gently chiding Hyas.  "And thank goodness I didn't do that either."

She stands up, walking over to Owen and brushing her nose briefly against his.  Then she pauses, frowning a little.  "Although together, we are alone here," she notes.  "I'm not sure I know anyone in Port Sumac.  Do you?"

Owen vaguely recalls a former pupil of his called Emery is now a sergeant in the Post Sumac guard. He has a distant cousin from his mothers side who lives here, Marjory, but you only have a vague idea what part of the city, having never been to her home.

Re: Summer 1158
"Alright, its not much love, but its a plan.  Let's slip away from here as quietly as we can and I'll do my best to lead us to Marjory.  Then you can use your unfailing charm to convince her to help us."

Owen managed a brief grin.  It wasn't much of a plan, it was true.  Emery's cousin could refuse to help them or he might not even be able to find her, though he was fairly confident he could.  Still, it was a bit of hope, and they needed all they could find.
