OOC VI:  A Thread To Be Named Later

Brand spanking new OOC thread.  Naming contest is still open, as I am awaiting one more response to the latest survey <cough>Euron/Amhairghin</cough>.

Oh, I forgot to mention this bit of possible hilarity I'm looking forward to at the funeral.  (Tonight and tomorrow night are visitation and services.)  My mother has gout and arthritis in her left ankle that has her hobbling around as well.  My sister, who had the car accident last year and lost part of her cerebellum, also has balance issues and walks slowly as a result, and does not do well on uneven surfaces.  My father has had spinal surgery and has Parkinson's.

And my grandfather is being buried at a small family cemetery behind his house.

On the side of a hill.

Up a muddy slope.

I keep envisioning all of us going down like dominoes.

Though my sister will likely not even attempt the climb.

Knee is better and scrapes are healing.  Ankle does everything it can to presage future osteoarthritis.

Re: OOC VI:  A Thread To Be Named Later

I'm back from Kentucky, where there was much sermonizing, two family funerals, homemade buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy (nom nom nom), some crying, lots of food, lots of seeing people I haven't seen since I was back for my grandmother's funeral almost exactly 8 years ago, some great stories (a few of which I managed to actually record), collection of many many old family photographs, and 22 hours round-trip of driving through some beautiful fall foliage from Pennsylvania through Maryland and West Virginia and into Kentucky and back again.

Am going to try to hit the longest-languishing threads now (Jonathan and Valan), and aim to move through the others tomorrow.

Re: OOC VI:  A Thread To Be Named Later

Ha!  No, my father (who is quite frail) did not even come back to the house for the buryin' and feasting; my brother and sister (the one with only half a cerebellum) drove up from Tennessee that morning, and then immediately back.  Despite my uncle's efforts to grade the slope to the gravesite and cover it with gravel, I decided not to chance it -- especially once my mother decided she'd rather sit in the living room talking to her aunt (one of my grandfather's two surviving siblings) and uncle.  Uncle Burlin was the storyteller, and man, he was  HOOT!

Never seen so many tosses of the skulls of death.  3 skulls.  Reroll.  3 skulls.  Next try, 3 skulls.  Reroll.  3 skulls.
Third time.  Saving the middle, chair goes through the mental window.
My opponents have already commented about it being the biggest handicap on me trying to play (win? laugh, win?) games.

3 d100s though.  Ouch.

Rolls needed

Someone who is NOT in Mobley's thread, please make the following rolls =:

  • the frost worm's death throws damage as a SECRET roll:  12d6 cold and 8d6 piercing.
  • Emil's REF save:  d20+2
  • Retta's REF save:  d20+4
  • Horses' reflex saves:  there are four still within range -- the ones ridden by Retta and Emil (which is Petra's), and the ones ridden by Hamble and Mobley -- the others have all skedaddled.  d20+6, four times.  Rolls will be applied in alphabetical order by rider's name.  (Anyone whose horse fails and is killed will have to make a Ride check DC 15 to avoid taking another d6 in damage and becoming prone ... though with the worm dead, prone doesn't really matter.  Roll a natural one on that Ride check and the horse falls on the N/PC.

Why is the death throes damage roll secret?  Because players who might be inclined to spend Hero Points to get an automatic "I'm not dead yet!" declaration have to make that decision before they know if the death throes damage will kill them.

game Wiki:
All PCs (both 3.5 and Pathfinder) receive Hero Points in accordance with the Pathfinder Hero Points model (with the exception that you can't use them for "return from the dead," as the general game rule of dead = dead still applies).  New PCs start with two Action Points; additional points are earned with each level-up, except you can never have more than three at a time.  NPCs will not have Hero Points.

More on that Dead is dead bit: There's no coming back from the great beyond here, even with Hero Points. (It's the difference between using Hero Points to "cheat death" -- and not get killed in the first place -- versus using them to come back from the dead.) ...

Hero Points might be useable in some pre-death way to help set you up to do something reckless or foolhardy or AMAZINGLY CINEMATIC without actually getting killed.

If damage is high enough to kill you, and you have NOT declared the use of the Hero Points before the result is known, then the PC is dead.  (And if you declare the use of Hero Points, but the damage turns out to be NOT enough to kill you, the points are still spent.)

Well, opposing counsel has filed motions in limine to bar any evidence or argument in support of leveling up, but we'll see how it shakes out in the pretrial conference.

Seriously, all joking aside, this is the sort of case where we're all playing chicken ...  the judge doing everything in his power to motivate the parties to settlement; the parties on each side (our opponent being an insurance company doing everything to prove the adage of "insurers only want to take your premiums as long as they don't have to actually provide coverage"), us ...  I am so hoping someone blinks.

Very few cases actually go to trial.  And the judge has done everything he can to make sure this one doesn't; adverse rulings on Tuesday have us scrambling to revamp our strategy, with lots of emergency motions over the past few days.  <sigh>  I'm still hoping it will settle (it's possible), but its agonizing to spend so much time preparing for a trial that's probably not going to happen.

Isn't that the way, though.

Or the waiting on the client to perfect and provide instruction, to rush for court documents, to receive a transcript, to spend a weekend researching to do an application that the judge will decide has some merit, but properly needs to be addressed at the trial, with an admonishment for the Crown to relook at their file fairly, to have them decide on the date of second trial that maybe the offer of a year ago actually was indeed the right resolution before the thousands of dollars and year of court time was wasted.

OH MY GOD YES!!!  One of the MOST frustrating things about this is that we could have settled this case (and by this, I mean two, as it is a coverage action combined with a suit against the thieves themselves) a year and a half ago if the client had been willing to enter discussions in the range we're now at.  In the interim, we've spent a boatload of money litigating, had our asses handed to us by a judge who has issued a series of rulings that, though reversible error can't be reversed until we get to the appellate court after even more boatloads of money, and NOW the client thinks, "Huh.  Maybe I should just get what I can get, and cut my losses."

I mean, REALLY?  For REALS?!?

Did I mention (I can't remember) -- the lawnmower baffle case has settled; we're just dickering about the language of the release now.

I could bore everybody even more with an account of the trial exhibit list I'm culling down and how we intend to get records into evidence under various exceptions to the hearsay rule.  I mean, this stuff actually does interest me, but it's dry as dust to other people, and I think the spouse is tired of listening to me grouse about it.

The good news is the case that was scheduled to go to trial on Monday, November 16th, has settled -- got the news last night as I pulled into my driveway.  So unless the judge schedules the other case (these were two lawsuits that were consolidated for trial, then de-consolidated at the last minute) to proceed immediately, I should be able to stop drowning.

Now, to plow my way through and update things, and answer long-languishing PMs.

FYI re Thanksgiving Week

Thanks to two cases settling out and a third being referred to mediation, I find myself with the ability to take all of next week off for a visit to the folks in Tennessee, and to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner as hosted by the sister who had the car accident last fall.  We're leaving this weekend (either Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning) and will not be back home until Saturday November 28th.

I do intend to post on days that don't involve hours of driving (or riding shotgun while the spouse drives).  But November 21st to November 28th do NOT count against anyone for purposes of the "two weeks of no in-character posting gives your GM agita."

Finished for tonight

This year, like every year, Thanksgiving is just around my birthday.
Now we don't celebrate Thanksgiving over here, but I just like roasting turkey so much, I've taken the habit to have a Thanksgiving dinner for my birthday.
This year will be small rooster, stuffed in a duck, stuffed in a goose, stuffed in a turkey. Celery and mushroom stuffing between each bird and the next.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

That seems... excessive.

But hells to the yeah, roast turkey rules the roost.  And, as my wife says, Happy Birthday!

I have a really hard time imagining him as Shal ;)
https://www.google.fr/search?q...biw=1680&bih=927
He used to be thinner though.

As for the bourbon gravy, I couldn't link you to any recipe as I didn't follow one, but here's the general idea:
-while your turkey is still cooking: pick up some fat from the drippings, use it to cook shallots until they're a brown purée, reserve.
-when you take it out of the oven: scrape the caramelized dripping from the bottom of you pan, dilute with bourbon (I use rye), add some turkey broth and let simmer.
-once the mix is smooth, add the shallots
-at this point, I stir in turkey broth and flour until I get the consistency right.
-I also added cream to make it more, well, creamy, but I reckon that was unnecessary...

I realize there's no quantity indications anywhere there... for a half-litre of  gravy, I used about 5cl bourbon.

Yes, I am aware who the actor is that I used for the current portrait.  And Arlo is currently posing as Talon Redsilks, an old human peddler with a military background.  Arlo's main portrait is mfd445, but has been in disguise while in Torei to this point.
I thought it made more sense to show his current disguise than his real face.  Player's choice I guess.  But I do understand the confusion if you haven't read the entire thread.

Garflin:

It was a family decision.  The kids started asking "When will we get another dog?" not long after Sarah died last September.  Last month some time I decided I was ready.  For a lot of different reasons, we decided we wanted a younger dog.  Beckett is about 7 months, and she's a black Lab mix.  (Our prior dogs have all been Labs or Lab mixes.)  We wanted to take two from the same litter, but the rescue (a) doesn't adopt out more than one dog to the same family at once -- we have to wait a couple of weeks, and (b) won't adopt two from the same litter to the same house.

At the adoption event today, there was a shepherd mix I would have taken if they had been willing to waive the "no two dogs on the same day" rule.

With that in mind -- what's your max damage on that confirmed critical?

And side comment, awesome way to start your attack on the boss fight; great follow-up to how Anansi managed to short-circuit the boss's and his minions' efforts to power him up in advance.

Re: Finished for tonight

So this is a belated Happy New Year to everyone.  Hope all was well with you.  Our holidays were pretty good, with various family gatherings (including goose dinner), traditional Pennsylvania Dutch pork and sauer kraut New Year's Day dinner, my sister (the one with a complete and functioning cerebellum) and her two kids visiting, and the dog settling in (she's getting pretty close to being actually house-trained, knock on wood).

My favorite holiday gift:  The spouse getting up with the dog at 6:00 a.m. the day after Christmas (the day of the goose dinner) so I could sleep in until almost 8:00.  Did you get/give anything that was particularly pleasing?

I think I've responded to everyone who has claimed their holiday gift per the message here, and I've PM'ed everyone who has not.  If there is anyone (other than Arlorian/Aisha) awaiting a response to a PM, please bump the thread so it shows up as unread in my ever-growing list of PMs.

Snow!

From the Announcement thread:

quote:
We're setting in for the first REAL storm of the winter season (the slight dusting we got earlier doesn't count).  While bundled up with the dog and hot soup for the weekend, I hope to work my way through all the threads, AND to answer the PMs (including some fairly major ones for Anansi and Konrad) that have been languishing.

Work the past few weeks has been like the oncoming blizzard -- things just keep piling up and I've been spending most of my evenings working rather than posting.  Hope to make it up to you this weekend.

I don't know which of you all in the US are in the path, though I do know a few who aren't -- you bastards with your warm weather.  For those who are, I hope you stay warm, experience no power outages, and have enterprising local teenagers who will do whatever shoveling you require.

Snow!

It was awesome to take ol' blue (my 1990 Chevy Suburban w/o ALS) in the snow on the way back from work. I came up to JD and played bump the curb every time I touched the brakes and laughed the whole way (about 2 miles) home from being only one of three drivers that worked today. Started at 0630 and was done by 1130.

I hate the way people in VA drive, but love to drive crazy in it myself, when no one else is around to get hit that is.

Oh and got permission to make my slow cooker chili. :D

What ARE you thinking?

All flights into and out of Philadelphia International are canceled.  We have a couple of depositions (one for DC, one for Boston) postponed because the other attorneys were coming from Seattle/San Francisco and were afraid they wouldn't be able to get in, or get back out in any reasonable amount of time.

We probably have a foot of snow already and it's supposed to keep snowing pretty much all day.

The puppy got us up at 6:00 a.m. wanting to go out.  Tried the front porch -- the roof over it and the configuration of the house keeps it mostly clear of snow.  She was having none of it; having been taught the back yard is the place for waste elimination, she imposed a pee boycott.  So while the spouse held her on a leash inside, I shoveled a path off the back porch and a small area at the base of the steps.

Which she refused to use.

I plowed our way through some wandering paths just using my legs and boots, with her dolphining up and down behind me.  Apparently right in the middle of the snow, with it up over the chest was the PERFECT place.

Posting

Finished for tonight.  Priorities tomorrow (to get things going again):

  • Elijah/Jonathan - having a troll eat Elijah ... I mean, respond to Elijah
  • Feeding Gabhran info to get him, Abby and Amhairghin off after their next quarry.
  • Amira, Tristan, Euron -- getting them moved along to the scene set up for the angry local villagers.
  • Mobley - teleporting his group onto a frozen lake to try to find something in the belly of a dragon.
  • Donato and Max -- getting them to the next step with the Red King
  • Charan and Josep -- depends on where they decide to go (or if Tandro seeks them out).

Survey - Please respond

All --

Things continue to limp along, as I am sure you have noticed.  There are lots of things going on work- and family-wise, and despite feeling extremely guilty about not posting, I'm just not able to do so with any regularity.  I don't want to shut the game down, but I need to be transparent with you folks -- I'm not sure that over the next 60-90 days when I'll be able to get back to regular posting.

I'm trying to figure out how to handle the continuing busy-times.  Your responses to this survey would be very helpful in making up my mind.

All --

Most of you (all but 2) have responded to the survey; I've prompted the last two players -- one or both of them might have decided from the lack of posting that they're already out, but I wanted to make sure.

Within the next couple of days, I should have a plan for what to do until I can get past this insanely busy time at work.  I truly appreciate everyone's patience, and I hope you all have other games to keep you entertained.

Survey - Please respond

Next post in the GM Announcement thread -- should be the notice thread at the top of the list:

All --

Of the responses received, everyone is either (a) put threads completely on ice, even if mid-scene or (b) just post whenever, with the goal of 1 post per week per thread.  I'm going to go with the latter option through mid-June -- if I can post more often, I will.  Jury selection for my Seattle trial is set to start on June 24th, and the trial is expected to last through the end of July at least -- so at that point I may go to the "on ice" option for the duration of the trial.

But I am not going to let the game die just because of my trial schedule.  I want to get back to it, and wrap up storylines, and see the PCs be Big Damned Heroes.

If you expressed interest in having a new thread opened to play around with flashbacks for your PC, let me know -- you can free-form your stories, enlist fellow players to run PCs.  If you're interested in running NPCs for other folks, let me know and I'll give you an alias to use for such posts.

If you need to get in touch with me quickly, use the email address posted in the last message in the thread entitled "Plan for the Next 6-8 Weeks."

I don't have a TV but I watch a lot of Netflix.

Recently rewatched Community and Brooklyn 99, quite fun.
I've discovered a fantastic Australian series called Utopia/Dreamlands ; I should warn though, it's a show about Aussie urban planners, so it's probably only funny if you're either or both.

Looking forward to catching up on game of thrones.

I used to be able to watch US Netflix with a VPN but now I'm stuck with the UK catalogue... Not bad but certainly not as extensive.
Also a couple of shows I was watching were only available on Canada or New-Zealand Netflix... :(

Yeah, we gave up the watching at time-of-show a long time ago.
We still record a few series, but tend to just but a series on DVD, rewatch the whole show, and avoid the annoyance of commericals or missing things because somebody was playing on facebook, or had to go pee a 6th time same episode, or 3rd phone call from same relative, or...

Really, if it wasn't for HD sports programming and odd special, we'd probably just axe the whole connection.

I have started thinking about dumping our cable TV, but I'm not very serious about it yet.  There are still some sports I like to watch live.  And some shows I don't want to be spoiled for.

In addition to 12 Monkeys and Person of Interest, we've been watching Amazing Race this season (we used to watch it all the time, but stopped for a bit). Still watching Castle, though we both think it has probably told its story and should wrap things up.  James Spader in The Blacklist is fantastic and is far better than everyone else in the show. Limitless was a surprise in a good way. And we are glad Orphan Black has returned.  Oh, and Elementary is well done, even if the mysteries are convoluted.

Not the Royal We, BTW. The GM and I are We, in case anyone didn't know that we are married.

Now Copa America Centenario, at least as long as the USMNT is in it. I'll keep an eye on Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, too.

Looking forward to the UEFA Euro Championship (as it has been renamed). I still need to get my Germany jersey.  It's become a kind of tradition since I got back into watching Futbol with the 2006 World Cup. Having German ancestors and being a US citizen, those are the jerseys I get at each competition, along with the host country's.

And the obvious ignorance of the refball that takes place in the finals of most series.

I don't know how they decide which 25% of the penalties they call in the finals, but the refs can't seem to figure how to split it halfway down the middle for each team.

As the spouse will tell you, there was much sleeping.  Much much sleeping.  Then our HVAC system died and had to be replaced, and my laptop is out for repair and I finally had to go back into the office today.

Seattle was lovely -- I mean really, really lovely.  At least when I got to see it, when I wasn't in a conference room, or in court.  The settlement (of this case, and one that was slated to go to trial this fall, also in Seattle) with one week of evidence to go was a little anti-climactic; there are some defendants taking it to verdict (closing arguments today, jury starts deliberations tomorrow), and we have our collective fingers crossed at the firm that they'll be successful at the end.

Next summer (barring settlement) will have me in Contra Costa County, California.

I need to read up on the threads and remind myself of where the bombs are planted and how close they are on the countdown.  Please continue to be patient while I wrap my head back around the plot-lines.

Re: Not Dead Yet

Well, I at least got Aeroc to Garflin.  Good news is that I've now reminded myself of where things stood before work swallowed my life.  Bad news is that it's bed-time and I'm not going to have a chance to post again until Sunday afternoon when we get back to the campground.

On another note, Pokemon Go -- surprisingly addictive.

Re: Not Dead Yet

Things that have been keeping us busy -- kids; having our kitchen ripped out (two weeks in, three to four weeks to go); dog.  Work.

I think it might be time to figure out how to wrap this up.  Back in March, as I was barreling towards trial, I considered posting then that I thought I needed to get the story-lines to an end-game - not necessarily wrapping up all the loose ends, but getting PCs to a point where the players could say they had questions answered, and goals achieved.  But at the time, I recognized that the stress of work, combined with some other things, was likely warping my thinking, and I decided to simply put the game on hiatus until after the trial.

Then after I got back, I had a brief burst of enthusiasm that hasn't held.  I find myself thinking, "I should log on and post."  And then just not doing it.  I can see end-games for a few of the plots are really close; others could go on for quite some time.  But the prospect of keeping them going indefinitely doesn't energize me; instead, it drains me.  It's not because of anything going on here -- you guys really have been, for a very long time, just the most amazing group of players.  I wish you lived within 30 minutes driving distance, so I could have y'all over to sit around the table.  But I can't get myself into the right brain-space to be able to say I'm in this for the long haul.  I would propose continuing the hiatus, but i'm afraid that if I do that, in a couple of months time I'll not be prepared to pick up the reins and run with it.

But I don't want to just walk away from it either and leave things unfinished.  So I guess I'm opening up a discussion about what folks want to do.

Re: Not Dead Yet

The below is IMHO

What I am hearing, although I think you are trying to be kind about it, is that you are burned out.  I give you huge kudos for stating that as opposed to just disappearing as many folks do.

Given I think you are looking for an exit strategy, and have been generous enough to offer wrapping things up in various threads, I do not feel that is necessary.  Just end things and be done.  Folks can take their characters and the backgrounds they have developed to other games...they certainly have rich material to work with.

My only other question(s) to you is...
Are you done with GMing?
Are you done with this game, primarily due to the fact that it has become such a massive and complex undertaking, and are interested in doing something on a smaller scale?

If it's the latter then I think I speak for several folks who would enjoy joining.

If it's the former, well it happens to the best of us.  I would say best of luck, enjoy a break until inspiration draws you back.  In which case do not lose my e-mail ademaria68@gmail.com as I would be happy join any game you are running.

Maybe I am wrong, but as a GM, I have felt the same way at times.

I appreciate what my fellow players are saying about accepting to walk away with a maybe some day. By all measures you've earned the right to end this inconvenience on your terms.
This being said and given the opportunity, I would love to exchange a few posts to wrap up ongoing story arcs. That is, if you do have the will and the inspiration for it.

Re: Not Dead Yet

Thanks, all.  I would like to finish up a couple of things, if the players are up for it, and game for figuring out how to do it fairly quickly -- that would mean some fast and loose non-mapped based posting, and me seriously backing off my rules-lawyerliness.

First, Tara and Iminye are in the midst of a scene that could close out the story arc of taking out Isabella -- a key goal for Tara, and one she has been chasing for a while, and something that would set Iminye up for her plan to TAKE OVER THE WORLD. And if they fail, it could be a hell of a cliffhanger.  Second, at the same time, the same scene (though in a different thread) could close out Valan's arc.  If those three players would like to do that, and figure out how to make that happen.

Third, Donato is also at the end of a story arc, in a scene that could wrap something up for him, and answer a few questions for him.

Fourth, Mobley -- this one really would require a willingness to set aside the rules, maps, and the like, and just rolling with it, but I'd like to wrap up the "do we get the bone-staff from the white dragon" if the players would like to do it.

Fifth, and this is probably just one or two posts, Tandro can be shuffled back to Sutton.

There are a couple of storylines that can't be wrapped up quickly -- unfortunately, Amira's is very early, as is Gabhran's and Abby's.  Garflin might be wishing, with 20/20 hindsight, that his father/antagonist hadn't escaped that last big fight.  I might be able to do a quick wrap of the current scene involving Jonathan and Elijah, but not in a way that actually closes a milestone in the story.

It is possible that six months from now, I'll feel like the possibility of reopening things (maybe with a "let's say a year, or 2, or 3 or 5 have passed -- if you want to pick up with your current PCs, what happened to them in the meantime?  If you want a new PC, let's talk."   But I can't guarantee it.

Mobley - I see this encounter as rather massive...which would be fun to go through, but I see no way to make it an 'easy' one to resolve.  Even with setting aside several rules.  However, since there are several players engaged I would defer to the majority.

Jonathan - I see no reason to move on.

Valan - I see no reason to move on.

Bug dead (apparently has been for some time), hospital visits done, sleep returning.
2/3 chance it will hit me again, so taking preventative meds.
Longterm damage to my leg veins, but chance it could recover in part, so crossing fingers.  Not as common, but my other leg partially recovered from a soccer injury, and my health is and has been super solid, so ... a chance.

Sleep and no IVs make many things much easier to muddle tru.

Very nice!  We joined our quasi-adopted parents and (by extension) our quasi-adopted extended family.  Turkey, stuffing, ham, salad stuff, potatoes, corn and other veggies, perogies, cabbage rolls, tortiere, buns, other salad stuff, fixings, but no goose.

We will tell them that they need to up their game (cuz geese, fly, ysee)! :p

We likewise have the LED tree from the drug store, tho our tree is only about 3' high.  Drives the cats that the star on the tree is reachable, but they are not permitted to go on the counters, or they are attacked by water ninja.

Amira:

There were a few blood relatives among the 40 (my sister, brother-in-law, and their kids; the spouse's sister and her kids).  But many of them we think of as "family" despite the lack of any familiar relationship by birth or marriage.

Donato:
(goose stuffed with a chicken stuffed with blood sausage and chestnuts)

That sounds like a much more elegant version of a turducken, with one less poultry.  Sounds delicious, too.

Hamble:
no goose.

December 30, 2017.  Put it on your calendar for next year.  it will be the 40th (and the spouse's 51st birthday -- did I mention his birthday coincided with Goose Dinner this year?  Go ahead, tell him he's old.)

As for cats and Christmas trees ...  We're going to be increasing the pet population in our house by one at some point over the next few weeks.  Since the first of November, the Boy has been participating in a weekly "StoryTails" program at the local animal shelter that has him "reading to cats."  The first few sessions at least involved reading to cats (with a couple of sessions of reading to rabbits and guinea pigs), though most of them have been playing with kittens -- to socialize them to people and prepare them for adoption.  Long story short, we're getting a cat, but wanted to wait until after the chaos of the holidays, to put away the tree.

Iminye Shal Tamasi:
Oh Great GM

Will this game ever come back to life?

I confess I do have thoughts of reviving it, at least long enough to finish up some story-lines that were very close to major turning points (yours included).  But for the next 8 months, it's off the table -- I have two major trials coming up -- one in St. Louis, starting mid-October, that is expected to last 6 weeks1, then after the holidays we move into prep/trial in lovely Martinez, California that is expected to be as long as 16 weeks.  I still have hopes of that latter one settling before trial, but until it happens, I have to assume it will not.

So we know what Hamble/Charan have been up to.  What have the rest of you been up to?  We had the kitchen remodeled, hosted the annual goose dinner (and celebrated the spouse's 50th birthday), I made a fruitcake (and yes, I actually LIKE fruitcake), we adopted a cat, to the annoyance of the dog, I marched in D.C., then chaperoned my daughter's 8th-grade class trip there a few months later, I've been to Nashville and had hot chicken, ran a charity 5k ("ran" -- given how slow I am, we always use air-quotes for my "running" in my house), traveled for business to Boston, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Chicago, Austin, L.A and Orlando (those last three in the same week), and we visited my parents and sister in Tennessee for the eclipse (sister's house was in the path of totality), which the Boy managed to capture on his phone.  Kids just started school (the Girl started high school, the Boy is in 8th grade), and things are pretty okay here in Bensalem, outside Philadelphia.

I also note that among Austin, Nashville, St. Louis and Kansas City, I've had some AWESOME barbecue in the past six months.

__

1This is a do-over of one that ended in a mistrial two weeks in, in June when the Supreme Court handed down a decision that threw a monkey wrench into the works.  June in St. Louis SUCKS, but I did get to go to the top of the Arch, and at least I didn't have to spend any of July (much less August in St. Louis.

I currently live in New Jersey (moved here March 2016) and am no longer with the Gnome Illusionist (though the split was amicable and we're still good friends)

My current companion is a big ol' Bronze dragon with Copper tendencies that had almost all his treasure stolen from his ex-wife. But, we're both learning how to be with someone that wants to help just as much as the other and it's been going rather well.

(A picture of us before we were dating and just at a LARP, but it's still a nice picture:

I have a nice steady job that I have been in since February and life is pretty comfortable at the moment.

Finished off student loans and pretending I can save up enough money for a house.

Still living in London, it's been a year and a half now and I'm wondering what the next move will be. Back to the mainland? Push for the girlfriend to chase a job at her company's headquarters in Denmark ? Think laterally and move 90° east ? London is fine short term, but i don't want to be around when brexit hits the fan.

We've just moved to the Barbican, which is a great location and the flat, though tiny, is really nice.

I'm still trying to fix London housing crisis with urban renewal, social housing and densification, but it turns out it's a bit more complicated than I anticipated...

I'm just going to take a vacation to Thailand for now, see how things work when I'm back.

Looking forward to rolling dice again with you all!

For those of you that know/follow the Critical Role group (great group of friendly voice actors that play D&D and weekly stream/podcast it), they launched a kickstarter to try and raise money for an animated show of one of their adventures, with a "how they met" intro.  Lofty goals, seeking 750,000$ by end of April/18.

Tough.

So the reached it in 45 minutes.

Last time I checked today, they were at $6.8 million pledged, and had upgraded the kickstarter to a series of animated episodes, including additional storyline arcs.

So ...

I don't know if anyone is still on RPOL and might see this pop up with a new message alert, but given the state of affairs in the world right now, I thought I would drop a line or two.

We're hunkered down in Bucks County, PA with two teenagers, a dog and a cat, and lots of dried beans and frozen food.  And dog food and cat food and cat litter.  My firm's Philadelphia office is closed (finally -- lawyers and other professionals were work from home, but with the state asking all non-essential businesses to close, we're now closed closed), so I am now 100% Work From Home.  Not that I really have a hell of a lot that needs to be done, since the courts are ALSO closed and the three trials that were lined up like dominoes have all been postponed.

So I'm crocheting.  A lot.  (Those of you who made the mistake of friending me on FaceBook, and the second mistake of NOT muting me there, already know this.  How many scarves can one person own?  WE'RE GOING TO FIND OUT, GENTLE READERS, WE'RE GOING TO FIND OUT.  Actually, I've been giving most of them away, but if I'm not going to the post office any time soon, they're going to pile up in the corners.  Anyway, anyone need a scarf?  A baby blanket?  A shawl?  Just find me on Twitter (https://twitter.com/_ShysterB) or Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/_shysterb/) and DM me, yo.

In other news, I tempted the fates this morning by volunteering to hand out sacked meals to low-income kids in our township who are left food insecure with the schools closing.  The school district is going to start doing this tomorrow, but that left a short gap that the local rotary club stepped in to fill.  It was a cold 4-1/2 hours from 6:30 to 11:00 am.  And tomorrow, I'm further tempting fate by signing in voters for a special election (why has it not been postponed?  Ask the Pennsylvania Speaker of the House.  Hint:  He's GOP, and he does not want it combined with the presidential primary later this month.  Please pardon my politics.  Actually, don't.)  We'll be using gloves and hand sanitizer and wiping down the voting machines, and I even bought extra packs of ball point pens so voters can have a NEW FRESH UNTOUCHED ONE (at least until I run out) to fill out their ballot.

After the counting is done tomorrow, the spouse (Tandro, a/k/a AJ) may tell me I have to spend the next 10-14 days in the basement. Or maybe not, that's where the booze is and he'll want to be able to access that.  So ... garage?

I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well, and stay that way.

So ...

Cat crocheting nonetheless!  Grin.

Your read of your representative appears to be the landslide view, which makes it interesting an approach.

~
We're working on appointment only at our AB office, as our courts are still open to emergency matters in superiour court (tho' any bail hearing/review/arrest is in that category), and conflicting direction on what is/isn't happening in provincial court.  Mat leave started early, one fellow with kids at home went home to self-q, rest in the office to torment each other.

Daddy will likely be helping dress dollies for the next bit around teleconference appointments with the active court locations.  Maybe freeing the 3 kitties from too much love and scarves (if there is such).  Perhaps a few ice cream treats, or fish crackers ... shhh  Daddy-horsie will need to wear kneepads for the upcoming exercise, but he loves it.  Snowangels and snowpeople will soon decorate the yard, so we will be hard at work.  Work, work, work.

I likewise wish the best to all ye fine folk south of the border.

And definitely garage.  *duck*

So ...

Personally I'm not worried. It seems every other year or so we have some pandemic that's going to kill us all. I don't get the freak out as 80,000 people have died from the flu and nothing's getting shutdown for that. It all feels made up, like it's being hyped for some reason. My guess it's just another Rules for Radicals never let a crisis go to waste scenario.

If you look at the cdc's actual numbers, this is no big deal. As of 2230 last night, only "156,800 people, according to official counts. As of Sunday morning, at least 5,762 people have died, including 2,563 outside of mainland China." When measured up to the 7.5-8 billion people on the planet, this is a nothing burger. https://www.nytimes.com/intera...oronavirus-maps.html

Looking at our numbers, we have "2,815 cases of coronavirus confirmed by lab tests and 59 deaths". That's only 0.0008% of the population is confirmed to have it with only 2.09% of all the confirmed cases sitting from it. In that number 26, just under half, were from a single nursing home. Now, granted, I'll give you that because most people don't know they even have it, this might get worse, though I doubt it given most people don't know they have it.

Look, I don't like Trump either, nor any political party really, but I've watched the media consistently try to lie about him over and over again. Obama let a thousand people die from the swine flu before he even did anything and the freak out was no where near this bad. There's no need to shut anything down except limiting access to nursing homes.

I've always tried to have extra at the house when nothing's going on. I have half a club pack from Sam's of TP, 3/4 of a pack of paper towels, two large bottle of bleach, a huge case of babies wipes, and enough canned goods for two weeks. I wish everyone would just calm down, turn off the media, and breathe. All one has to do is prepare when there's no crisis and there will be no need to panic. Unfortunately, the majority is full of sheeple. Good and bad times always end. This to shall pass.

So ...

G, I think that you're somewhat comparing apple and oranges.

I agree the global action and news has been much higher than normal, and certainly a stronger response than SARS or MERS.  The "flu" is here every year, and somewhat nonplus now.

But let's look at the why of the action.

You mention corono19 numbers are much lower than the flu (after a year).  Yup.  Part of that is because of effort to social distance, to limit large gatherings (except, apparently, on Florida beaches?), to reduce international travel spread, quarantines, etc. all those actions combining to slow the spread.  I keep thinking of playing Pandemic board game, but that's the geek in me.

The second numbers issue is off-count because of the lack of testing.  When I was doing court in northern Saskatchewan, one of the judges commented that he had thought that staffing shortages would have increased crime, but look at how reduced was the docket!  At which point the police agency looked at him like he had two heads, because the police simply hadn't been investigating anything non-violent, because they didn't have the bodies.  The hall in which court was being held had been vandalized three times that month -none investigated- for instance.  Similarly, when there is a big hiring of law enforcement, there are more eyes and responses in the street, so more crime detected.

When tests are not being done, or being limited, it throttles the known numbers, artificially deflating the true count.  If we're not testing all the bodies (no one is) even in Canada, the true death number is deflated as well.  If we're not presenting accurate degree and range of spread of the virus, whether argued for preventing social panic or incompetence, we're not gathering a true image of how prevalent is the virus.

I admit that I struggled a bit with the response to this v. others. The simple maths answer finally cracked it into my thick skull.
SARS and MERS high mortality rate = scary.
Flu kills, spreads quickly, but is low rate.
Rifle v. buckshot.  The new unknown is always scary, and this one is being treated more cautiously because of SARS/MERS (the virus is a SARS variant, IIRC).  In theory, updating responses to prevent or reduce fatalities is a good idea?  Complacency factor on the known flu deaths?

The rough numbers are something like this:
C19 is a tenth the lethality of SARS.  Good.  But it's 10x the lethality rate of the flus.  Bad.
Flu is around .1% mortality, C19 1.4% (though varies depending on testing/response!), and SARS around 10%.
Worse, C19 spreads MUCH more easily (like 10x) than SARS, and it doesn't present strong signs in all the carriers, and doesn't immediately present symptoms unlike SARS.  So you have a hard to detect disease, not being properly tested for, that spreads much more easily than SARS, can't simply isolate the sick folk because you cannot ID them accurately without testing, and you don't know enough of the disease to confirm its characteristics or rates or vulnerable groups or mutability.  Then factor in how long it can remain a threat outside the body... If you don't stomp on the spread, you have a disease that spreads like the flu but has a much higher danger/death rate.  Learn from the previous epidemics/pandemics, strike strongly quickly to clip the expansion =  reducing deaths in one's populace.

The next problem with the numbers/rate.. is that they are already outdated, and arguably misleadingly low.  The virus has already mutated at least once, and the majority of deaths are from the new strain, so numbers/rates are artificially deflated again by mixing the lower version1 C19 with new-and-improved version2 (the L-strain).

The graphic in this one is handy:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/ne...hs-compare-covid-19/

~
One theory expectation is that eventually everyone will contract it, and the countries are trying to slow the rate so their very limited ventilators can keep up, to reduce the mortality.

I'm not a big US politics guy, so I take my own words w/ a grain of salt.

That "Obama let 1000 ppl die before acting" is spun reporting , to my understanding.
"the PJ Media article claimed that Obama “waited” until millions of people were infected with H1N1 before he declared an “emergency.” But that isn’t the case. The Obama administration started to address H1N1 just as the disease emerged in April 2009. A public health emergency was declared on April 26, 2009, when there were about 20 confirmed cases in the United States. The Obama administration renewed this declaration twice in the ensuing months before declaring a national emergency in October 2009. "

This is more detailed:
"On April 15, 2009, the first infection was identified in California, according to the CDC, and less than two weeks later, on April 26, 2009, the Obama administration declared a public health emergency. The day before, on April 25, the World Health Organization had declared a public health emergency.

Dr. Richard Besser, then-acting director of the CDC, confirmed to the press on the day of the U.S. declaration that there were 20 cases of H1N1 in the U.S., and that “all of the individuals in this country who have been identified as cases have recovered.”

The same day — April 26 — the CDC began releasing antiviral drugs to treat the H1N1 flu, and two days later, the FDA approved a new CDC test for the disease, according to a CDC timeline on the pandemic.

On April 30, 2009, two days after the public health emergency declaration, Obama formally asked Congress for $1.5 billion to fight the outbreak, and later asked for nearly $9 billion, according a September 2009 Congressional Research Service report. On June 26, 2009, Obama signed Congress’ supplemental appropriation bill that included $7.7 billion for the outbreak."

Obama did wait (until Oct, I believe) on declaring it a national emergency though.  I took a walk through the news articles for memory lane, and you could sure see the people griefing for the delay in responding, and the people griefing for "why is this emergency?"

Bad news media reporting sadly is a characteristic of humanity.  We sure remember the people that cut us off, but rarely those that let us in.

~
Trump is certainly being lambasted for shutting down Obama's pandemic-response team and trying to throttle numbers, changing his story, etc.  The lack of honesty and accuracy from Trump doesn't help his position, and he has lied consistently enough that nothing he says is accepted anymore barring on Fox.

I admit that I don't like his approach to matters.  I really don't understand how a grade3-name-calling person with an aversion or inability re truth becomes the leader of a strong country like the USA, but that's why I don't follow enough politics, I guess :)

So ...

How? Disease response to disease response. How are they different?

We just started this so called social distancing. Covid19 has been a thing for almost 2 months now.

Sorry, but that's widely inaccurate. Our first confirmed case wasn't until April 14th. There's no way anyone would call for a state of emergency in one day from one case. This is according to the CDC itself. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5815a5.htm

The media is parsing words. Yes, he called for a medical public emergency, but this is far different from declaring an actual state of emergency. All the first does is cause the CDC to be more aware and to test for it specifically.

It wasn't until October that he called for a state of emergency and released $1.8 billion and there was only 8 school districts that closed for the entire pandemic. This was after a thousand had died.

So, in actually he had done nothing, other than telling the CDC to watch for cases. That's like me standing on the side of the highway and yelling there's a boulder in the road 5 miles down. You think anyone's going to listen? Nothing will change until I get the police out to stop traffic.

This is all just a ploy to make orange man bad when the majority of us aren't even going to know we have it nor are going to die from it. Shutting down the country will only force people to ask for more government handouts which leads to control.

No thank you.

We're all going to die and freaking out about it isn't going to change anything. At least we agreed on that. If covid19 doesn't get you it'll be something else. When a person freaks out all they do is entangle another person that could be helping someone in real distress. This panic is taking beds away from people who really need them.

When it comes to testing that's inaccurate as well. I've taken by kids to the doctor many times with "flu like symptoms" and the doctor never runs a test, just prescribes tamaflu and tells us to have a nice day. I have a feeling this is what's going on as well because it's funny that allergy season has started. How many of those cases have been rubber stamped as covid19 when they're not? We'll never know.

Then look at Hanks. Look at what he's said after being diagnosed.

I'm telling you, this is being hyped for a reason and my suspicion is the election just 7 months away. I ain't voting for Trump because of his buddying up with that dictator in China and his inflation of the national debt not once, but twice. I'm defiantly not voting for the socialists either, but then I haven't voted for anyone on the ticket for president for 3 rotations now.

Now in closing, please read this with a kind tone. I'm not upset or angry, I am frustrated, but it's not directed at you or anyone other than the government as a whole. I'd love if this game picked back up and would play with any of y'all. Let's at least keep this in mind.

So ...

I'd pass out popcorn, but I'll just AOL! Hamble's post.

I don't give one flying fuck for "well, what about the other guy?"  Whether a reaction 12 years ago to H1N1 was less than satisfactory is not a basis for evaluating what is the appropriate reaction to _this_ pandemic. Was the administration right a few weeks ago when it insisted it was all a big nothingburger, not worthy of any concern?  Or is it right now in declaring it a national emergency and advising folks to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people?

Me, I'll take my guidance from the virologists and infectious disease specialists I know (including the head of the CDC flu team, who frankly thinks people/governmental agencies don't take the flu seriously enough on a year-to-year basis).  Setting aside the mortality rate from COVID-19 itself -- which the specialists of my acquaintance find to be a real SOMETHINGburger -- as shown in Italy, the strain it puts on the health care system seriously imperils the immediacy and quality of medical care given to people who are suffering from run of the mill heart attacks and strokes and the like.

Pennsylvania's first death just happened yesterday.  But that fellow in Northampton County is the third member of the same family to die from COVID-19 -- his sister and mother were one of the 5 deaths in New Jersey.

Reduction of numbers in China is good news.  Think about what the Chinese government did in order to reach that result -- by taking it seriously, imposing and enforcing strict quarantines and conducting wide-scale testing.

________________

So anyway, to report on the special election:

Turnout overall was more than expected given the social distancing policies announced for our county, but lower than the special election would have otherwise brought out.  Far more voters in the older demographics than younger (not really atypical).  Oldest voter of the day for Lower East 1 -- a 95yo gentleman who comes to every election.

Both voting precincts located at our nearby elementary school were fully staffed.  Other locations had lots of people call out, so either our two teams are optimists or fatalists.

Our oldest worker at our station -- Mae, 89, who has been working that location for 50 years -- came over the strong urging of her children.  We've been planning how to handle her involvement for the 4/28 primary and then the general election in November -- she's very hard of hearing and very forgetful, but insists on being involved in finding voters in the ledgers, checking IDs, etc.  It makes long lines even longer.  So or the special, our judge of elections, Kevin, gave her the task of simply handing out the paper ballots.  Pennsylvania is moving to a paper ballot system going forward -- fill in the circles next to the name you want to vote for, then take it to a scanner to be counted and deposited into a locked container.  Giving out the ballots and directing voters to the private voting booths was something that would let Mae be involved, but not require her to handle anything that voters had handled.

Eleven hours into the voting day, something happened with Mae -- she suddenly become completely nonresponsive, and when she snapped out of it a couple of minutes later, she was very, very confused.  The EMTs who came and evaluated her and took her to the hospital thought she had a mini-stroke.   So I'm thinking good thoughts for Mae.

In other news, I'm getting very little actual work done from home, but I did finish a scarf yesterday for a friend and have started another for his wife.  The dog is enjoying extra walkies, the teen-aged son is annoyed with the "now's the time to catch up on your schoolwork!" nagging, the cat regularly insists that he isn't fed enough, the spouse is playing a lot of Destiny 2, and the teen-aged daughter is catching up on her sleep.

Tonight's dinner will be soup, made with roasted vegetables and chicken left over from a dinner a few nights ago.  I'd invite y'all over, but I know you can't come.  And the house is a mess anyway.

We're still all remote, too.  Our Houston office was supposed to have a partial reopening (no more than 25% of personnel on site at any given time) this past week, but that got delayed.  No firm date for our other offices.  So I'm still camped out at one end of our dining table, though with the courts closed my hours are ... low.

We were working in office, but remote appointments.  Court has been non-existent except placeholder dockets and bail hearings, except family matters, which have been shockingly ramped up in number with confinement of people together.

Our region is clear of COVID, so matters are sliding very quickly back towards normal - at least until the peace is disrupted again.

Happy Fathers' Day, and honourary ones too! :)

Re: So ...

I continue to work from home at one end of my dining room table.  In a bit of coincidental timing, my firm had just started looking at options for office space in Philadelphia when our 20-year lease at our current location expires at the end of 2021.  In the past six months, the decision has been made to stay where we are, but radically rethink our space -- surrendering floors, reducing office size and surveying people for their preferences about working from home vs. coming into the office and/or using the "hotel space" model for offices.

My teenagers are full remote for school.  Son (the younger) will be remaining that way through a virtual program offered by our school district year round.  Daughter is still hoping to return to in-person class at some point before she graduates from high school in the spring; in the interim, she is resolutely ignoring the college application process.

Dog is pleased with all the company, and more frequent dog-walks.

I seem to be past my sourdough obsession, just periodically pulling the starter from the refrigerator for waffles.  I continue to crochet all the crocheted things you can crochet and then give away to people.

Our voter registration is up to date.  Spouse and I are signed up for mail-in ballots (which we will drop off in person at the county Board of Elections).  Still need to get my daughter (who will be 18 by the time of the general election) to sign up for the mail-in ballot (which we will also drop off in person).  But I will be working the polls on election day, signing in my neighbors.  Not really looking forward to being yelled at by folks who don't want to wear masks, but <shrug>, whatevs.  Pennsylvania, we're a battleground state and we're expecting the already heavy litigation over mail-in voting to ramp up in the weeks leading up to the election.

I used to say that if I were to win the lottery, I would immediately give notice at my job.  Nowadays, I would immediately purchase citizenship in New Zealand.
