(C&C) Heroes of the Haunted Highlands
Heroes of the Haunted Highlands

Game System: Castles & Crusades (i.e., rules lite D&D)

Casting Details: Searching for a couple of new characters to round out the cast of an established game. New characters will begin at 5th level.

Theme: Exploration across a sparsely settled, wilderness frontier that was recently scoured by a massive orcish horde

Flavor: Pulpy, action-packed adventures in search of Gold and Glory!

Campaign Objective(s): Short, episodic adventures w/ no overarching metaplot

Posting Requirements: I will be aiming for a posting rate of one post every 1-2 days, with the realization that real-life takes precedence, and there will be periods where that rate slows down. My main concern is that players communicate planned absences so I know what's going on and can plan accordingly. I will make it a point to let players know when real-life circumstances will have me sidelined and expect the same level of courtesy from the players. Communication is key to the success of a PbP.

General Setting Information: The Haunted Highlands is a crumbling frontier realm in the aftermath of a massive Orc invasion. Most of the realm is ruined and/or populated by roving bands of marauding humanoids. Small pockets of civilization still exist here or there, but for the most part the land is dominated by wide tracts of dark wilderness.

The dominant human culture is reminiscent of ancient Greece, during the Dark Ages. Within the highlands, a barbaric native hunter-gatherer culture also exists (think: ancient Germanic/Slavic/Celtic peoples). There are also the marauding Northmen, aboard their dragon-prowed longboats (think: Vikings). In the distant east, rumors speak of a devil-worshipping people in a land of swirling sand and towering minarets (think: Arabian/Persian peoples). Somewhere beyond them, are the horse-riding savages on the endless steppes (think: Mongols). Bloodthirsty pirates plunder weakly-defended ships on the high seas to the west, their exotic cargoes bound for distant sprawling metropolises, redirected elsewhere. It's a dangerous world out there, to be sure.

Elves and Gnomes are very rare, the stuff of legend. Half-elves are slightly less rare, and most people who claim to have seen a True Elf, have actually only seen a Half-Elf. Dwarves are few in number and wanderers now, their homelands lost to some unspeakable tragedy that they would just as soon forget. Halflings are either agrarian simpletons, nestled away in their cozy hillocks or, a network of swindlers and con-men plying their nefarious trade in the big cities of the world.

Warring Orc tribes fight over the spoils of their recent bloody conquest, and not to be outdone, a Hobgoblin Horde rallies in the distant mountains, eager to make good on its shot at glory. And, if that were not enough, lots of other Monsters, some, whose names are unknown, prowl the countryside to keep things lively. What a great Age to be an adventurer!

Hmm. Hard to say really. Basically imagine the races and classes of AD&D 2nd edition, except there is no restriction on what races are able to be certain classes. There are no skills--everything is based on Attribute checks (STR, INT, WIS, DEX, CON, CHA). You also do not roll dice to perform mundane tasks. You only roll skill checks when there is a significant chance of failure or something is on the line. Saving throws are also based on Attribute checks.

The d20 is used to handle pretty much all attacks, skills, saving throws, etc. Rolling high is always good. In this regard, it resembles 3rd or 5th edition.

Unlike 3rd edition, there is no a lot of mechanical and strategic complexity to combat. It's not a game about counting squares, avoiding Opportunity Attacks, etc. Combat goes fairly quickly.

With all that said, I would say it most resembles 5th edition D&D, but it's really more of what 3rd edition might have been, had it not evolved into a game where character builds and optimization determined how effective your character was going to be.

Hope that helps!

Re: (C&C) Heroes of the Haunted Highlands
C&C - OMG where do I sign up in blood!!!!!!!

To answer the person's question about what is D&D lite? - It's basically 3.0 but throw out the feats and skills. Replace the skills with attribute rolls and a couple of those attributes are your "primes" that get you a further bonus. Feats get replaced by RolePlay. Want to try to do a shield bash with extraordinary greatness? You don't need no silly feat - the whole game is based on the old "...yes...and/but..." method and the GM comes up with a target number. It's arbitrary.

Re: (C&C) Heroes of the Haunted Highlands
Hello!

Looking to add a new player into an ongoing Castles and Crusades (i.e., AD&D/d20-lite). This is an established game that has been going for 3 years and spanned many small adventurers, though we are about to set out on a new adventure and the party could use some extra firepower.

The current cast consists of a Barbarian, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue and Wizard. All characters are 5th level and new characters will start at 5th level as well.

The party has just entered a city under siege and is about to embark on a series of clandestine raids against a humanoid horde occupying the city's eastern shores. This, an effort to weaken the entrenched enemy forces in advance of a full-on counter-offensive to break-through to the beleagured Central Bastion and liberate the eastern city from the humanoid army.

No game system or setting knowledge is necessary. Prospective players do not need to go back and read old threads to jump into this game. I will provide everything you need to know to jump in and play immediately with little spin-up.

About the game system: Castles and Crusades is very similar to D&D and anyone remotely familiar with D&D will quickly understand how this game works. Basically, if you have played AD&D or any version of d20 D&D, you will easily pick this game up. This is also a good rules lite system for complete beginners looking to try out fantasy RPGs without having to learn a ton of rules.
