Players Wanted!
The course if the Ark Ship Hydron was Bastion IV. It was the perfect blend of everything required for colonization. The atmosphere was rich in oxygen, the planet abundant with flora and fauna. Nutrient rich beneath the soil. Clean water and tolerable weather. It also didn't break the edict of harboring species that had gained full sentience. Finding a planet that was eligIble for human colonization was always exciting. The ever expanding growth into the universe only wet man's curiosity, instead of satisfying it.
The crew aboard Hydron, however, did not find themselves on Bastion IV. A technical error, a glitch, a malfunction, something in the navigation system pushed Hydron off course. When everyone awoke to alarms, they found themselves on emergency autopilot, landing on a much different planet.
Xylis III.
Xylis was inhospitable. The atmosphere, heavy with nitrogen, could not support human life. Initial scans showed unknown deposits beneath the surface. Nothing their current technology could utilize. The indigenous creatures were vicious and did not recognize man as an apex predator. Early search parties did not return, even with plasma weapons at their disposal. It was the end for the colonists of Hydron.
Dr. Samantha Maecos was the first to suggest gene editing. Even if they could not breath the air, their children would have a chance to survive. Early experimentation went far awry, before they managed to mix human genomes with DNA from Xylis. An adaptation that let neohumanity survive.
As the second generation was born, then the third, the mutations began. At first there was secrecy, an effort to fix the damage. But it was too late. Genetic purity became a currency, and old habits of classism surfaced. Man on Xylis slid backwards into man of early Earth as resources ran low. A revolt began, those with lesser genes turning on their unblemished counterparts. Blood ran red before the population was suppressed.
Hydron took to the sky. They used what they could, built a city far away from the broken planet. Far from the Mutants they left to die. Of course, life finds a way...
