Hardboiled Noir Detective Thriller
The only good thing about sitting in your office in April is that you're not sitting in your office in July. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell Mother Nature.
An early heat wave has struck Los Angeles, April 18th, 1938, making you feel like a slow cooking pot roast. The only source of air comes from a rickety fan that sits on a file cabinet over your left shoulder--it may or may not run when you flick it on and when it does, like today, it's on the lazy side and barely spins at all. The suffocating air in your office is merely being pushed around, saying hello to all four corners of the room, one at a time. Leaving a window open only lets escaping mosquitos and flies in from the sauna outside, hoping for a drop of water or, as the case may be, an ounce of blood.
But then again, you've become used to losing a little blood. You're a sleuth.
Marinating in sweat, you begin making another highball, lots of ice, easy on the water, when the phone rings...
