Good Makani!  I just figured I would stop in and found the perfect time, it seems another Firefly game I am in is just picking up.  Talk about timing!

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
So, open question:
What is it about Shans game that makes us (Burne,Stacey, makani, and Jin) log in to peek, years after we were caught drifting in space, to see (I guess?) if we'll ever bump in to a friendly moon?

For me, this was one of the first games I played, but also one of the first where I found the players to be more about the characters than 'winning', and the gm to be tough but fair.

Shan, if you are still out there id love to know of you have had similar interest or experiences in other games?

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
For me it was the premise that Shan had actually finished a game, which is almost unheard of here on RPOL.  Usually they just drift into nothingness (as this one has done for the last couple years).   The potential to be part of a game with a beginning middle and end is intriguing to say the very least.

Are you playing anywhere else?  (send me an rMail if you are, or you have anywhere you want to play).

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
Hi, folks!  Every now and then I check out RPoL to see what kind of games are being played, and to my surprise, this game showed that there were new posts!  It's nice to see that the old game is still remembered, even after all this time.

I hope everyone is doing well.  Is anyone involved in other Firefly/Serenity games?  I know that Margaret Weis Productions put out a new Firefly RPG manual, and from what I saw, I wasn't impressed.  MWP has always had a tendency (in my opinion) to "pad" their products so they can crank up the price, and this latest product seems to support it.  Fully 40% of the manual (about 145 pages) is devoted to converting EVERY Firefly TV episode into game terms, to show how events would have occurred/been resolved using the Firefly RPG.  I haven't checked to see if there are any games on RPoL that use the new system, nor have I checked out any of the other MWP products in the Firefly line (such as scenario books).  I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any experience with the new books.

Anyway, nice to hear that some of the old gang are still around.  Y'all take care.

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
Hi Shan,

Yeah, I saw some advertisements for the new system and had a similar experience to yours; I feel there is nothing truly new here.

If you ever come back around, let us know.  It would be good to play again.  This was a good group.

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
I've not seen the new system but am generally wary of anything done by MWP.  I've looked at joining a couple of other Serenity games but they have either fizzled or, in one case, I just did not gel with the GM during the rtj/character gen process.

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
The games seem to start quickly, and then just as quickly fall into abandonment, leaving players seeking once more.

I believe that getting a "good fit" between the players and the GM is paramount to a long-lived campaign.

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
I've hardly been on rpol in the last couple of years - now have 2 kids (I dont know if I had any when we first started this game all those years ago!)

I also hooked up with a local group and tried my first bout of actual real life roleplaying! Mildy intimidating at first, but loads of fun. It taught me loads, especially that I'm less in to dice rolling then I thought I would be - its all about the story for me :)

Nice to hear from y'all!

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
You as well Stacey!

There is little that can compare to face-to-face roleplaying.

If you aren't into the *roll* as much, try some diceless games like Amber based on Roger Zelazny's books.  Great story telling!

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
Amber is a fantastic setting, character creation is done in a totally unique way as well.  The other great one for more role, less roll, is Fate/Fudge/varients thereof.  I'm in a face to face Dresden Files game at the moment and the dice only really come out in combat, the rest is trading of aspects and fate points to enrich the scene and negotiate just how much trouble we can get ourselves into or out of.

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
The trading of points concept I love.  It was one of the things that endeared the Cortex system to me.  In the games I play that use it we tend to set up the characters and rolls come out in combat (as you pointed out).  Beyond that it is more of points being traded.  I find it really helps to promote great role playing over lucky dice rolling.

I haven't tried the Fate gaming system yet.  Maybe when I find the right GM who is willing to do a bit of hand-holding I will.

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
I still live (finally).  Trying to keep up with another game but RL took over for a while.  Finally trying to get back into everything.  Otherwise for me role playing games involving being the Hulk while chasing the kiddos around the house.  Lots of fun but very tiring when four of the five decide they are also the Hulk and overpower you.

Glad to see that all is well with everyone else.

I wonder where that Shan Yu fellow is these days. Not running games for anyone else I hope - I'd be awfully jealous!
Its a long time since I've seen any serenity actually - I guess a few years till my 4 year old will enjoy watching it tho too.

Re: Puppet Theater II (OOC part 2)
Hello, everybody!  Every now and then I check in on the old game to bask in the glory of days gone by.  It's nice to see that y'all seem to have the same notion.  I haven't GM'd any games since this one...I guess y'all spoiled me.  Nothing much else going on here, though.

Stacey, can you believe that your 4 year old was a mere twinkle in your eye when we were playing this game?  Who knows, we might have a multi-generational game one day with a father/child team as owners of a Firefly class mid-bulk freighter.

Hope you all continue to do well, and I'll check you later.
