Hey everyone! I just wanted to warn you that the next two or three weeks (until Jan 7) are going to be insanely busy for me. My mom is in town (and I only see her every two or three years) and my work is doing year-end and moving.

So my posting might get sketchy. Maybe it'll be fine and I'll post every day, or maybe I'll vanish completely. It's hard to know for sure.

So, sketchy-posting warning.

I'm one of the few among my old circle of friends who likes the new ones.  They have problems, but most movies do.

That said, I've learned to take pains to avoid developing preconceptions of what a movie should be (which might be part of why I like the new ones).  So, I'm reserving judgment...  *grin*

That's exactly it. They're just movies. A new experience can't retroactively ruin a prior experience unless you allow it to.

And the original trilogy had the benefit of aging in a relative vacuum, without social media or the burden of a decades-ling franchise to bear. Lots of people didn't like Empire at the time. There were lots of all caps fanboi letters to Star Wars magazines yelling about how stupid it was that Darth Vader was Luke's father and etc etc.

As the youngest Scion of a Great House, with the responsibility for bearing the majesty and glory its venerable predecessors into a glorious new age, Solo is probably a failure.

As a cool space movie where attractive people do sassy banter and blow stuff up in service a plot that's just smart enough to not be stupid and just simple enough to not be distracting?

Rousing success.

I thoroughly enjoyed it...but again, that's likely due in large part to the fact that I didn't expect it to 'measure up' to anything else.  It wasn't a story about the Skywalker family, and it wasn't a story about the Rebellion, so it didn't need to feel like anything else in the Star Wars canon, to me.

Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

We have thirteen more days of shows...then we jump on tearing down the summer stuff and putting up the Halloween stuff.  It'll be interesting...we're theoretically doing pretty much the same stuff we did last Halloween, for entertainment...we were going to change up our Seance show, but the new bits they wanted to add were...well, 'cost-prohibitive' comes to mind (and this is a show that they spent tens of thousands of dollars on putting together in the first place, so you get some idea of what that might mean...)  There will be some stuff that will be easy to take care of...we're basically repeating the light hang from last year's show for our main-stage show, and the music is all the same...but they're going to have to tweak at least a few things, because there was stuff we used last year that CAN'T be used again this year, because the places where we had it mounted no longer exist on the stage (including the solo positions for the two guitarists), and a bunch of the set dressing was designed around features on the stage that are no longer there, so it could be an interesting change-over, depending on just how much stuff has to get relocated.  And I honestly have no idea what's going on with our other show...I know it's supposed to be in the same location, and presumably will have the same lights...I hope they let us run all the cables before they put the deck on the stage, because it sucks crawling around under the stage when you're a middle-aged guy who's becoming increasingly inflexible, physically.  But I don't know if we're using the same lights, or how many of them will be available if they decide to keep them down at the existing stage...

But, yeah...there's gonna be plenty to be done in the four weeks or so between when our summer shows end and our Halloween shows start...

You're only starting to worry about that now?  I've had my reservations about him since the episode where we were trying to find the mole in the Alliance HQ...maybe even earlier, but that was where I started wondering if maybe he hadn't gotten cross-programmed with an interrogator or even assassin droid...

But there's also just a chance that he's just become really bitter about how he's been treated by biologicals, so I'm willing to wait and see.

I have always enjoyed this particular game, and continue to do so...and hope to do so for a long time to come.  I've played enough different games to know that the chemistry...or perhaps alchemy would be a better term, since the results can be magical...of the players and the GM can make or break any game.  With the right group, I can have fun playing just about anything...and with the wrong group, it doesn't matter how much I enjoy any particular system or setting, the game becomes a chore.

You all are definitely 'the right group'.  Thanks for being such an enjoyable distraction!  *grin*

I continue to be disappointed that there was obviously zero pre-planning or attempts to write out the story of the trilogy beforehand. It seemed like this, of all chances, was the chance to really get it right.

As for Episode IX, it had the unfortunate burden of spending an hour or so undoing everything that happened in Last Jedi, and it was filled with things that would have been great had they been part of the story since the start, but felt tacked on an extraneous here.

But, taken on its own terms, as a single movie, it was fine. Slightly on the downslope of the Bell Curve. Some cool scenes. Some epic set-pieces, Daisy Ridley is so, so, so much better than the material she's given to work with.

Merry Christmas (or Solstice, or Yule, or whatever mid-winter holiday you happen to celebrate)!

And I do have to admit, fond as I am of many aspects of the sequel trilogy, I do feel like there was only the barest bones of an outline for it, overall, and you can definitely see the lack of a single voice providing the primary story, as compared to the original trilogy or the prequels (which had a very unified story, just incredibly ham-fisted storytelling...)

I do think that Rian Johnson tried to tell a more mature story with TLJ...we didn't have the clear-cut Good vs Evil motif, the good guys did some not-very-good things and we saw a lot more shades of gray on the periphery, which reflects the different era in which the film was created (we are more cynical and jaded as a society than we were in the late 70s).  I can see where that turned a lot of people off, because Star Wars is kind of marked by the simple black-and-white morality, although some of the favorite characters (Han Solo!) didn't fit that mold.  But I really liked it.

I didn't feel like ROS was undoing stuff from TLJ, so much as saying, "It's not always that simple..."  I can't get into specifics without starting to drop spoilers, so I'll leave it at that.  And I'm probably more favorably inclined to it simply because I was afraid JJ was going to load us up with another impossibly huge threat that couldn't be justified (like Starkiller Base siphoning energy off a sun, or firing an energy beam that miraculously splits somewhere down the line into multiple beams, and is not just enough to destroy a planet with a single blast, but multiple planets, at the same time...)  He has a penchant for doing that, and it never fails to annoy me.  But I felt like almost all of the threats in ROS were plausible, and the one or two that took me out of the story were incidental to the plot, not key plot points, so I wasn't constantly reminded of just how implausible they were.  So, going into it expecting to be disappointed in that way, and then NOT having it happen, gave me a very positive spin on it.  I don't think it's a great movie...but I think it's a good movie.

Hm.

...that requires 'Alter', which Shard doesn't have.  Nor would likely ever have, given she needs a teacher with Alter to get it.  And then needs a gawdawful amount of experience points to ever get anywhere she could actually do anything with it.

It's funny.  I've been thinking recently about the old games I used to play versus the new games.  Even the old, first and second editions of D&D versus the new stuff.

In the old days, progression was GLACIAL.  1st level magic-user, 3rd level magic-user....really, they're still a sword thrust from death, and have all of three spells to cast (and they are all *wiggles hand*).  And it took a while to level up.  Thieves in old-school D&D were horrid; the only skill they could use with ANY regularity (until arriving at level...I don't know, 10 or something) was Climb Walls.  Etc.

In this game, Force Users not only sacrifice stat points for Force skills, but Force skills cost DOUBLE unless you have a master teaching you.  That's...really, really expensives.

New games?  Progression shows.  Levelling up makes a difference.  Skill points come faster.  There are less...I don't know, 'roadblocks' to making people have oomph and capability than before.

I wonder if it's because there are so many games out there, and somewhere along the way, someone realized 'people aren't going to be playing the same campaign for eight years so much any more' (well, I might be, but others likely not).

I don't know; it's weird, the 'cultural changes' in RPGs.  :D

I think progression also depends a lot on the GM.  I've played with a few different ones, in various systems...some of them were quite liberal with points, others essentially made you bargain for almost every one by highlighting what you'd done that was out of the ordinary to justify getting any additional points.

I found, however, that as long as the GM kept the game's overall 'threat level' commensurate with the abilities of the characters, my enjoyment of the game didn't depend all that much on character advancement (although it did certainly help to have characters be able to do more and more 'cool stuff' as the game moved on.  But in the case of the original incarnation of this particular character, I just always had this weird affinity with the dice...when there was just one chance to do something, and the fate of the party depended on it, Rhijans was the guy everyone wanted to take the shot, or fly the ship, or whatever...come do-or-die-time, the dice NEVER failed for him.  He might have all kinds of weird luck with them any other time, but when it really counted, the sixes just kept showing up.  It was almost uncanny...

But I also made a habit of trying to cover all the bases, so that it was very rare that the fate of the party depended on one successful dice roll (that's a habit I generally try to maintain with most characters I play, regardless of the game.)  And most of my GMs also took that into account when asking for dice rolls...I probably got away with a lot more cons than I should have because I'd laid out enough of a background for it that the GM looked at the con I was pulling, and often said, "I can't think of a good reason that WOULDN'T work..." and I either didn't have to roll or they knocked down the target number.  I've always appreciated GMs that give you some kind of credit for trying to be smart about doing the really stupid thing you're about to do (like raiding an Imperial shipyard...*laugh*)

It's certainly a sea-change in terms of culture.

I think a lot of old-school RPG's were sort of predicated on the idea that just playing an RPG was, in itself, so different and interesting and fun an unusual that advancement was almost just a pleasant by-product.

And the 'old-school' paradigm is that of matching characters against a set series of obstacles that were not modified in any way based on the participants, and the challenge was whether or not you could muster your available resources in a way that could overcome the obstacle. Much more like a video game than a communal narrative.

And so, like a video game, characters died. Sometimes they died a lot. And so there was a lot of groups composed of characters of varying level. And that meant that game design didn't really think of making sure all the options were balanced against each other at a given level, and that lead to game design leaning heavily into unequal advancement as a balancing mechanic.

Modern RPG's exist in a very different universe where the general design philosophy is that a 4th level Fighter and a 4th level Cleric should be contributing more or less the same within a given set of challenges. And lot more emphasis on everyone being roughly the same 'level' within a party.

I think just about everywhere is starting to feel like a bad apocalypse movie.  The show I was working on closed a week and a half early.  All of my school-teacher friends are remote-teaching for the next two weeks.  Movie theaters are still open, so one of my two jobs is still safe.  Pretty sure opening day at the amusement park is postponed, but I'm nervous for how this will affect my job there.

But, hey...being single, I still have enough toilet paper on hand to last me until late June or July, and last time I bought some was back around Christmas, so there's one thing I don't have to worry about...

We're not planning a work shutdown, but we've told everyone if they have so much as a sniffle STAY HOME.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

So far, so good, for me.  I talked with the daughter of the park's VP (she's heading up marketing to large groups, as we have a lot of company parties, social groups, and even some pretty big family reunions that book the park, in a normal year).  She let slip that we are almost certainly not opening on schedule...which it seems everybody already knows, even though the park president has refused to make any public statement to the contrary.  I would be really worried, except for a few factors...I'm among those who are actually on salary...that means, open or not, I'll be expected to keep showing up until I either end up getting sick and self-quarantining or there's either a county-wide or state-wide order given to stay home.  It also means, in that eventuality, that I'm likely to keep collecting a paycheck, as I'm as close to indispensable as anyone in our department (I'm the only one with any idea of what's in our costume storage from beyond four years ago, I'm the one with the best knowledge of what's in our props storage, and I'm literally the only person on the park who knows where all the lighting circuits in the theater run).  I've also been with the company for close to twenty years, now, and they tend to be pretty loyal to long-term employees.  So I'm not too fussed about my day job.  And, thus far, the movie theater has done enough business to warrant staying open (we're averaging less than ten tickets per showing...but the building is bought and paid for, all the projection equipment is paid for...overhead is pretty low, for a movie theater, and crowds like that are slow enough that a manager can handle tickets and concessions on their own.)  I'm also effectively on salary there, too, and nobody else there knows my job or wants to do my job, so as long as we're open, I'm employed there.  So, aside from a flood of scared commentary and angry denunciations about not being able to find toilet paper on my FB newsfeed, life hasn't changed that much for me.

I'm pretty much working as normal.  The only change is that we aren't letting customers inside the building.  They turn up, put their dog in one of the outside pens, then phone us to say it's there so we can fetch it in.

Later, they ring us when they're on the way to collect their dog, and we put it outside to wait for them.

People are starting to do "panic runs" on pet food and medicine. We're trying to adapt.

As I heard it, some idiot on YouTube put up a video of all the things he was hoarding in case he couldn't leave the house for six months, and one of the items was basically a room full of toilet paper.  A few million people thought it was a good idea, and the rest is history...

The store here ran out of toilet paper last week, but got new supplies in yesterday.  Oddly it's the only thing that they did run out of so far.

I also noticed that, in spite of their being told to stay away from crowds, being in one of the "at risk" categories, the store has been absolutely packed with old people every time I went in there (I live over the road from it, so I'm in there every day since there is no inconvenience for me in shopping often).  So same old people coming in every day and buying tons of stuff.  Wonder were they were storing it all?

And face it, at their age they were never going to live long enough to use that much toilet paper, even without a lethal virus doing the rounds...  :(

Was so tempted to walk in and start coughing, just to see how fast those pensioners could run...  >:D

But it's still mystifying. Especially since, of all the things you might lose access to, that one's not actually that big a deal. Comparatively. I hear in Toronto that meat is becoming scarce. That one could be way, way worse.

We stocked up on meat and frozen vegetables (not hoarded, stocked up) about a week ago. And we're starting to see the veg freezers empty now.

And, again, we're not in an overly panicked area.

Vegetables, on the other hand...yeah, things are getting scary.  Good thing is that there's always fresh produce.  Bad thing is that means more frequent trips for groceries.

On the plus side, my work IS allowing me (and about two other people) to enter the building and keep our experiments alive.  I have about an hour, twice a week.  It's barely enough, but it might suffice.

I feel Ontario WILL start to really panic soon, Haarmon.  We had our first explosion of fear when people realized it was coming.  Now we're just getting into the real sharp part of the graph, and once the cases start piling up, people might finally start taking it seriously.

Rule here is that only people with vital jobs should go to work.  But according the boss my job counts as vital because by looking after dogs we are allowing people with really vital jobs (medical staff, fire crews, truck drivers, etc) to go to work.

And the local train company has put longer trains in service, even though there are less people commuting, because it means that people don't have to sit so close together.  I was on the train this morning, and I was the only person in the carriage.  :)

The government, I suspect, should be the ones to decide what jobs are vital.  Not the businesses themselves; if they have to decide, there WILL be bias.  Not malicious bias, just bias.

That's not to say that the government itself isn't biased, but on a broader basis, rather than an individual one.  And I'd give them better odds about properly deciding what is essential, though our bloody premier has apparently decided that pot stores are.  Though there is, at least, some medical justification for it.

Government here is advising, but not forcing anything.  Working on the principal that companies know their own circumstances better than politicians do - things like how well they could survive a potentially prolonged shut down, taking into consideration the size of the company and the location.  Which, of course, varies between companies even in the same industry.

At the same time the companies are being told that employees who choose to take time off should be allowed to do so, with no consequences for them.  Government will pay 80% of their salary while they are off, and the company pays the other 20%.

Where I work there are currently only two employees, and a small number of customers, so less risk of infection.  But the branch I work at is slap bang in the middle of a change of ownership (so not a good time to be closing down for a few weeks).  I'm still working there to smooth the transition, but later I'll be switching to another branch that is part of the original company.

The faster the change goes through, the sooner I get to move.  So I have little incentive to take time off just now (though I will, if it becomes necessary).

Well, so far, it sounds like it's just a case of 'we're closed to the public', which is the same status we've had since the end of October.  My car's been in the shop for the past week, so I've been off, anyway.  But one of my concerns was how to pay for the repairs, and still having a paycheck is worth something.  There's also a chance that my other job will get one of the business loans that are being offered, and pay at least some of us (since almost all of their management personnel are family members...there are a few others who've been with the theater long enough that we're treated like family...)  I'm not banking on that, though.  That's an extra $400/month that I could really use...luckily, I just got a raise at my primary job that should ease the pain on that a bit.

I'm not sure what to do honestly.

As a medical facility (pet hospital), we're allowed to remain open. The original plan was to stay open for medical needs and emergency cases.  But the vets/owners just bought this practice a year ago and have no financial cushion.  So "emergency only" has turned into "Sure, bring your pet in for a ~@#%!$@^@~ nail trim!"

And some (a minority) of our clients are acting fussy and entitled over every little thing, which would not be terrible in normal times (customer service being what it is).  But I take exception with being potentially exposed to this over a nail trim.  Everyone's nerves are on edge.  Everyone's frayed at the edges.

To add icing to the cake, we're now told we have to wear face masks whenever we interact with customers or are handling pets.  That's, like, 90% of my day.  I can tolerate a face mask for an hour, maybe 2.  Then I start hyperventilating, my claustrophobia kicks in, and I have to constantly fight off panic attacks.  During which time I'm supposed to make sure I provide the usual customer service to fussy clients over things that, really, they should NOT be breaking quarantine over.

I love my job, my coworkers, and my employers.  But this is just rough.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

My province of Ontario has been issued a pretty strong non-essential business shutdown. One of the categories of essential business is manufacturing, which thankfully, my workplace is. So  my job is safe. Actual business is very slow, but right now we're having all the workers come in three days per week and paying them for five. As a manager/administrator I'm basically free to come in to work or not as I see fit. My son works in shipping here so I'm basically coming in the days he's in, and staying home the days he's not (he lives with me, so I'm his drive).

So, at the moment, we're okay. And every day I take a moment to be thankful for that. Even a five years ago (working in hospitality with no savings), this thing would have just destroyed my whole life.

My main issue right now is where to get crickets for my many pet tarantulas. And that's not even a real problem.

For myself, I'm finding myself completely computer-burned out.  I'm a research technologist.  I'm supposed to be in the lab.  Sitting and writing on a computer for hours?  I enjoy that.  Sitting and working at one?  Kills my motivation.

I'm really happy I can work from home, and I know I'm lucky.  So I'm not complaining.  It just leaves me without a great deal of drive to do MORE computer stuff afterward, even the stuff I enjoy.

I think either one of us would work for it...really, anyone would work for it (except Juragga), but Hedine's got no field experience that we know of and Haarmon's not known for his commanding presence under pressure (although he's come a long ways...).  But I didn't knowingly push for anyone in particular to have it, just kinda figured whoever they could most easily create an ISB ID for would be the one getting it.

I've actually had it pretty lucky, all things considered.  I work at an amusement park, which would normally be open on weekends at this point, but the county board of health specifically ordered the closure of such places as they are inherently impossible to really maintain any sort of proper social distancing and surface sanitizing (I hadn't really thought about it until just now, but bowling alleys, which were also closed, would be a nightmare...one carrier gets the virus on their hand, then on their ball, which gets on all the ball-return equipment, and then on all the other balls...)

Anyway, I'm in the entertainment department there, and we don't start our shows until Memorial Day weekend or later, normally, so I'm not missing anything I wouldn't be missing anyway.  But they have all of us working behind the scenes taking care of stuff...extra cleaning, painting, small construction projects, etc.  So my schedule...my work schedule, anyway...hasn't really changed at all.  But all of the stuff I used to do after work is closed...no thrift stores, no movie theaters...a bunch of my theater friends in the area have started up a Facebook group to do readings of play scripts, via Zoom, which has been a fun change of pace for me.

Well, my first line of mental defense over the past couple of decades has been to throw myself into work, so this actually doesn't feel too out-of-the-ordinary, for me.  Oddly enough, I actually feel like I'm getting more social interaction (granted, it's all online, but, still...) that I would be getting during 'normal' times.  I'm in a Facebook group that does script readings of shows we like, or would like to do.  We do it via Zoom three nights a week, that's a bunch of people I would normally never meet at all, much less spend several hours a week with.

And another group of my friends have started doing a regular Friday night online game night...which is something I haven't had anything close to in over a decade (more like a decade and a half).

So, in some ways, yeah, it's a tough situation.  In other ways, it's actually better than normal...

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I'm so sorry, Rhijans.  I hope your old friend is managing.

We've been under huge stress, sorry.  LTC Homes are becoming horrifying hotspots in Ontario, and one in Ottawa is one of the worst.  Coincidentally, it's where my Mother In Law is kept.  We're estranged from her, with good reason, but at the same time hearing that she's in a place under lockdown where nearly half of all of the staff and residents were suddenly tested as having Covid last weekend has made a lot of old feelings resurface.  So we're struggling with stress.

As of a couple of days ago, he was only experiencing mild symptoms.  Found out that a woman I went to high school with had been exposed but was an asymptomatic carrier...she was the only one in her family who didn't get sick.  I've looked at a couple of online surveys about it, and half the symptoms are things I've lived with since way before Covid broke out, so I kinda rely on taking my temperature to determine whether my congestion and runny nose (and accompanying occasional cough) are just my sinuses going into allergy overdrive yet again or if I'm actually sick with something.  Shortness of breath and joint pain don't help a whole lot, either...I'm in my fifties, with a family history of arthritis, and have had pain in my knees, off and on, since I was in high school.  Initially, I was agitated about "Is it Covid or is it allergies?!"...I've kind of settled into a headspace of "Well, it's no worse than normal, so we're good."

We're actually supposed to start rehearsals for our show (we're only doing one this year, because of this...the magic show that we're doing has a cast of three people...the crew is larger than the cast...if you include the house managers, the crew will be almost triple the cast.)  I'm thinking it might be smart to get tested before then, just to be sure.  If I can find a place around here that does antibody testing, that would be the best thing...learning that I already had it and just didn't notice would be a dream come true (as long as I didn't give it to anybody!)

Yeah...trying hard to avoid making any assumptions.  Although I have yet to hear of anyone getting reinfected with it...of course, at this point, for many people, it would be hard to say whether it was a fresh case or a relapse...I understand that, for those whose illness runs the severe route, it can take months to fully recover from the effects.

Indeed.  This is NOT a 'fllu'.  There are all kinds of terrible things that can go wrong when one has it.

There have been some instances of people who SUPPOSEDLY had the illness contracting it 'again'.  Bad tests?  Dormancy period?  Or actual?  Has happened in S. Korea, China, and on the US Aircraft Carrier.

I'm hopeful they are anomalies, but.

Ah!  Here's Haarmon!  You'll have some Dark Side points, won't you?  They come with free cookies...

I'm doing okay.  Summer holiday for me just now, and the weather is GOOD.

Doing lots of walking - 8-12 km every day, normally around one of the two nearby lakes, or out along elljusspåret - literally "the electric light track" - a trail for joggers and walkers in the summer, or skiers in the winter, with lights for evening exercise - loops for about 10 km through the nearby forest.  See lots of birds and occasional reptiles (grass snakes and slow worms mostly).  Sometimes see deer, especially if I go out early (like 05:00).

Sometimes I walk over to the next town and back, using the path that they installed alongside the main road last year.

So, yes, keeping healthy.  :)  Sixty years old, and feeling like twenty-five.  :D

That reminds me of some of Musashi's teachings (not exactly the best role model, but certainly knew how to fight).  Set up a rhythm, then break it.  I used to do that in weapon sparring.

Ron has 'formlessness', to continue the martial arts metaphors.  ^_^  My playing has been spotty for about...oh, close to a year now.  I'm not happy with it, and need to improve it.  ^_^  But thank you, and I think everyone here is just wonderful!  :D

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Hmmmm... could have sworn I posted this here on Friday...  Guess not.

Anyway... slight disaster.  Been off work sick all week... got tested, and it turns out I've got me a case of the covids.  Doesn't seem like more than a particularly heavy cold for the moment, but I'm following the doctor's advice - staying home, resting, and drinking plenty of tea.  Probably too much tea.

Also fielding questions from the boss at work, who rings up at least once or twice a day to check that I'm taking it easy.  I'm one of three people at work who caught it, all at the same time.  So I'm glad I'm off - sound all-together too stressful at work just now, with three out of the four most experienced staff off sick, leaving just one in work, with three part-time teenage temps.

Posting... may be a tad sporadic for a little while.  Take care, my friends.

It's what we seem to do best...

My experience in general has been that if you come up with a solid plan that incorporates every contingency you can think of, most of your prep work is wasted and there's almost always something that goes wrong early on and screws up the rest of the plan.  If you just get a general direction and roll with the punches instead of trying to run with a plan, you're inherently more flexible.

It very much depends on the GM. Lots of them penalize you if they thought of something you didn't, but Ron is good about engaging with whatever insanity we offer him, and run it with a that crazy-enough-to-work Star Wars feel.

Also, unrelated, I'm halfway through Season 2 of the Mandalorian and, as a fanatic of both Star Wars and the Kurosawa-Spaghetti Western tradition(s), I'm loving it to pieces. I wish they had gotten Dave Filoni to helm the sequel trilogy.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I think one of the biggest problems with the sequel trilogy is that there really wasn't someone specific at the helm.  They seem to have said, "So...here's these characters, and this is the basic setting...AAAAAnd GO."  Abrams did what he does.  Johnson got a very dissatisfactory set of conclusions to build off of and decided to try and do something different, without completely departing from the track Abrams had started, and then Abrams came back and Abrams-ed it all up like he did with ST: Into Darkness...I enjoyed them both, but I felt like he was so busy trying to paint the biggest, baddest threat to existence possible at the expense of plausibility, in both cases.  But I don't feel like Abrams even paid particular attention to what continuity he himself had established...there wasn't a cohesive throughline to the entire story.  I enjoyed them...more than the prequels, not as much as the original series...but I definitely recognize that there could have been MORE.

But Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau aren't trying to build a continuation to the Skywalker Saga...they're spinning a tale that's completely tangential to it.  I think they would have run into a lot of the same problems if they'd been given the sequels...I'm sure they would have handled them better, but there would still have been issues, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if reports came out that they'd been offered the option to work on the sequels and said, "No thanks."  Favreau did his bit for the MCU early on, when there wasn't an overabundance of continuity to fight with and expectations were reasonable...but he got out, as a writer, after a few movies and hasn't gone back, despite having established the flagship movie for the MCU and basically establishing the tone for much of the first three phases.

I could go on and on about this, though...I love the work that they've done (I haven't had a chance to see anything from Season 2 yet, so I can't speak to current status outside of some extremely broad strokes that have flashed through social media).  They're definitely doing a better job of incorporating the full breadth of the Star Wars Universe...but they've also got a lot more freedom to operate because they don't have the burden of finishing out someone else's storyline.

Regarding the planning and such, that's pretty much how I view GMing.  :)  Get a generial idea of 'how will things play out if there were no players?', throw the players in to the mix, and watch it go where it does.  Can't plan for everything, because it's guaranteed the players will think of something else/do something else, and I detest railroading.  Which is something Ron NEVER does.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Sounds reminiscent of the situation here in Utah, late summer.  Our governor hadn't opted for much more than concerned words and heavy hand-wringing, as far as a state-wide policy, and left measures up to the various county health departments.  The county I'm in had some fairly stringent restrictions, and as a result, in spite of being the third most populated county, it had (and still has) a remarkably low infection rate.

Then, mid-August, the governor finally decided to step into the fray and impose some state-wide policies...which were less restrictive than the ones we were already using here, but since it was a state-wide mandate, we changed to the looser policy.  Like I said before, we still have some pretty good statistics...but our infection rate definitely jumped when we shifted to the state standards instead of sticking with the county health board's...

(And the governor held off on a mask mandate until after the election...he wasn't up for re-election, but the lt. Governor was, and I'm quite certain the timing was entirely to prevent the arch-Conservatives in the state from jumping ship and voting for someone else out of spite.)

Well, all through it Sweden has been avoiding lockdowns and heavy-handed measures for controlling the situation, and it was all working well.  Not too many cases, hospitals were coping, few deaths...

Then, in November the graphs went crazy.  Large increase in the number of cases, with a rise in deaths too, and it has continued at the higher level since.  Personally, I suspect it was the sudden drop in temperature that did it.  People maybe got the normal winter colds and flu, and the corona took advantage of their weakened condition.

Now most people are wearing masks in public, and the government is muttering about closing non-essential businesses for a while.

November was also when I got the darned thing.

I think the colder weather also means more people spending all their time indoors.  Probably also an increase in people with sniffles and stuffy noses, which made them less inclined to try and breathe through their masks...

I'd say we had the same thing here, but our case numbers have pretty much always been increasing at an escalating pace, so it's hard to say if the arrival of cold weather really increased the rate of infection significantly.  The park closed for the season, so my odds of exposure have dropped way off.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I was a Trek fan from way back...I blame my dad, he watched reruns of TOS a lot...not obsessively, by any means, but I kinda attribute my interest in sci-fi to him in many ways.

But Star Wars...I tell people Star Wars was my first love, in sci-fi.  I enjoy Star Trek, but I love Star Wars.  Not obsessively...I don't have all the books, I don't think I've ever read any of the comics, I've seen some of Clone Wars and Rebels...saw a couple of episodes of Resistance and was left flat.  But the original trilogy had a special magic for me.

But, considering I've gone, in the past month, from three active games and one haltingly active game that runs in fits and starts to one active game and the stumbling one, I've got some time...

I'll have to check it out...I'm not familiar with the system, beyond having heard of the company.  I've got a pdf of the John Carter rules somewhere, I'll have to scare it up and take a read through...

And I keep expecting Ron to show up at any moment and say, 'Why are you all still here?  I said the game is done...' *grin*

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

No worries and no rush.  I'm taking my son to the DMV for his driving test today, and I'm off work until Friday (still recovering from non-Covid lung infection caused by, and complicated by, severe allergies to the #%!@#%% California wildfires).  So I'll be around. ;)

As said in the wrong thread (of course)…

Seven years and I still love this game.  :)

Me too! I still miss you guys.

What are you all doing for role-playing these days? Anything interesting?

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Well, I'm in another game that I started playing in just after this game started up...playing a Marine Sergeant-Major sniper in a future-set Earth vs bad aliens (turns out that they're not all bad aliens, but it also turns out that some of the aliens we initially thought were good were just kind of stringing us along, so the 'bad aliens' category keeps shifting...and also includes a bunch of humans who are selling out their own kind...)

It's less fanciful than Star Wars (no Jedi, no Force)...kind of a little bit pulp-fiction heroes, Star Trek, Starship Troopers, and Horatio Hornblower, all mixed together.  But it's been intriguing enough to keep me involved since Day One (out of the original lineup that started the game rolling, there's me and the GM left...the other six or seven players all came in later.  Some of them joined the game, dropped out, and then came back a few years later.

I'm currently heading a covert operation to eliminate a slaver who's well-enough connected on the space station where she's operating that local authorities don't feel like they can take action without causing a backlash...so I'm trying to make it look like rival gang factions went after each other.  The current mark is the third and last one on the list.

Roy (my character there) and Rhijans would either get along really well, or else utterly despise each other.  I'm not sure which.  They're cut from the same cloth, in a lot of ways...which, in my experience, either means you're birds of a feather, or else you recognize all your worst qualities in the other guy and can't stand the constant reminders.  *laugh*

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I've been away from RPOL for about a year.  Just recently joined a couple games - one a Mutant Future/Gamma World game where I play a mutant dingo, and a 1st edition AD&D game where I play a young druid.  Both games are new and I've only been in them for less than a month, so... all I can say is, so far, so good. :)

This was a great bunch though, miss writing with you guys.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I had some RL stuff go down in November and I've been away since then. I've been keeping an eye on the Players-Wanted and GM-Wanted forums, but nothing's really caught my eye.

My previous offer to run something for you all still stands, if people have room for a game and we can decide on a story/game/system/setting.

EDIT: Look at Haarmon's little face! It's been so long since I've seen it!

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I've had a slight change in employment status (for the better)...I'm an assistant manager in our department, now, and officially in charge of all the technical bits and pieces (I was in charge of it before, just unofficially...it's become my job because literally no one else in our department knows much about lighting, rigging, etc).  This comes with a significant pay raise (like, I'm taking home about $400/month more than I was last year!)

But it has impacted my gaming.  I'm technically GMing a Robotech freeform game (inherited the job from the original GM), but I'm so often preoccupied with work stuff that I haven't had the mental energy to keep up with it.  So, I'm not likely to jump into any new games any time soon...

But if it's the right setting and system, with this group? I might be persuaded...

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Whee!  Look at everyone’s faces!

Well, they’re not that unfamiliar to me, I just reread the entire game.  ^_^

Sounds like everyone’s doing some interesting stuff, and that life isn’t treating anyone too poorly.  Sorry to hear about the troubles, Haarmon.  Good news for Rhijans!

For myself, I’ve been up-and-down. Had some health scares, but doing OK on that front now. My play post gaming has been minimal since a lot of Ron’s games died, and I’m not in right now.  One game, really.  I admit, I’m not 100% invested in it, but I’m staying in because of the people.

But I’m starting to get back into things now.  So if there was a good game with this group, I would certainly be interested. I absolutely loved playing with you three!
