Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.
Sounds reminiscent of the situation here in Utah, late summer.  Our governor hadn't opted for much more than concerned words and heavy hand-wringing, as far as a state-wide policy, and left measures up to the various county health departments.  The county I'm in had some fairly stringent restrictions, and as a result, in spite of being the third most populated county, it had (and still has) a remarkably low infection rate.

Then, mid-August, the governor finally decided to step into the fray and impose some state-wide policies...which were less restrictive than the ones we were already using here, but since it was a state-wide mandate, we changed to the looser policy.  Like I said before, we still have some pretty good statistics...but our infection rate definitely jumped when we shifted to the state standards instead of sticking with the county health board's...

(And the governor held off on a mask mandate until after the election...he wasn't up for re-election, but the lt. Governor was, and I'm quite certain the timing was entirely to prevent the arch-Conservatives in the state from jumping ship and voting for someone else out of spite.)

California is a train wreck right now, gang, I can tell ya that. :(

Had to move my daughter 450 miles down to San Diego on 12/29 and, while the drive went smooth, and we just did a turn-and-burn, I don't much like her being an 8 hour drive away during this mess.

Fortunately my best buddy is literally stationed 10 minutes from where she lives so there's that.

Crazy times we living in.

Hope you're all well.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.
This whole thing has been...interesting, I'll say.  I have a chronic sinus condition, so the first time I had to answer a questionnaire about Covid symptoms, about half the answers were, "Yes, but I've had that for a couple of years, now..."  Each cough triggers an analysis..."Have my sinuses been draining extra?  Is this just my usual morning clear-out?  Do I feel any worse than I did before either of my Covid tests over the summer?"

I think my physical health is probably a little more robust than my mental health, right now...but I'm getting by.

In reply to Shard (msg # 266):

Oh man, yes. That's exactly my experience and my opinion. My work is taking seriously, my wife and I are taking it seriously. But it doesn't seem like most people are taking it very seriously. Walmart is still an insane jungle every day (albeit a masked one). The roads are still full.

I think the news of the vaccine plus general fatigue has a lot people not being very careful.

In this house we're in voluntary lockdown and are only leaving the house for work (and even then we're WFH as much as we can).

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.
Well, all through it Sweden has been avoiding lockdowns and heavy-handed measures for controlling the situation, and it was all working well.  Not too many cases, hospitals were coping, few deaths...

Then, in November the graphs went crazy.  Large increase in the number of cases, with a rise in deaths too, and it has continued at the higher level since.  Personally, I suspect it was the sudden drop in temperature that did it.  People maybe got the normal winter colds and flu, and the corona took advantage of their weakened condition.

Now most people are wearing masks in public, and the government is muttering about closing non-essential businesses for a while.

November was also when I got the darned thing.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I think the colder weather also means more people spending all their time indoors.  Probably also an increase in people with sniffles and stuffy noses, which made them less inclined to try and breathe through their masks...

I'd say we had the same thing here, but our case numbers have pretty much always been increasing at an escalating pace, so it's hard to say if the arrival of cold weather really increased the rate of infection significantly.  The park closed for the season, so my odds of exposure have dropped way off.

Stories are bad all around.  I'm glad to hear everyone here is trying to stay safe. Sorry to hear about your daughter, Juragga.

I've been in for two tests, myself - mandatory if I get any symptoms and want to continue working in my lab - but so far negative.

I'm really disappointed with the 'leadership' we've seen through this, though New Zealand's PM has really done an excellent job.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I'm on my third test. Twice because my wife had a new fever, once because a guy in my office tested positive. All negative.

I am also generally less than enthused by the leadership around this, but just before the numbers started climbing, I heard so many people complaining about all this 'fuss for nothing.'

Like they do about the Y2K bug.

People don't understand that, if you take good enough precautions, it feels like you did it for nothing.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter as well, Juragga, and I'm glad you continue to test negative, Shard.

Three tests...urgh.  And yes, we had people saying similar things up here.

...didn't help that our leaders were effectively encouraging it.  Even recently.  "Hey, the situation is dire right now!  So we're going to put the province into lockdown!   ....AFTER the weekend, so get your Christmas shopping finished!"

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.
Posting this in all of my games.

Due to a recent, and sudden, change in circumstances, I'm afraid that I am unable to continue GMing games for the time being.  As a result of this, all of my games are closing, with immediate effect.

While I may return to GMing in the future, I can not guarantee that I will pick up any of my current games again.

Apologies to all of my players, it has been a pleasure gaming with you all.

Well...that's disappointing.  But understandable.

It's been a pleasure, truly.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that things change again and you can resume...but I won't hold my breath for it.

Best wishes to you all!

Ron, thanks for everything, and best of wishes! Let us know if we can assist you in any way.

If any of you are looking for games, or are in games that need players, maybe we can keep in touch?

Thanks to Ron and the rest of you, this has been a fantastic game.

Oh my goodness, Ron!  I hope that you are well...

I will sorely miss our games, but it's far more important for you to get whatever you require.    Your life, your circumstances, those things are the critical ones.

Everyone, I've been...so blessed to have this experience with you.  I hope to see you around, though I'm not here as often as I used to be.  Maybe we'll get to play again in the future, maybe even with Ron.

Regardless, I wish everyone the best, and hope that we meet again!

PS - anyone wishing to rmail me, I go by Raffles here.  ^_^  Love to all of you!

Facemaker329 here.  I'd happily game with any of you any day...maybe even playing a system I don't know.  *grin*  rMail, say hi in Community Chat, whatever.  This game helped keep me sane during some truly infuriating times at work, and I love all of you for that.

My handle is just Dale here on RPOL.

Be safe, and well, guys.  Will miss writing with you. And Ron is a great GM.  I look forward to playing with him again someday, I hope he's OK.

I do run a couple games on RPOL.  Not sure if they'd be to your taste, but you'd be welcome!

Star Trek Adventures set during the Wrath of Khan era, and a Mutant Future/Gamma World game.

Star Trek Adventures...is that a system?  Or the title of the game?  Sounds intriguing...I like the TWOK/TOS movie-era setting...

In reply to Rhijans Thanus (msg # 284):

It's a system. A d20 roll under system. It's not too bad. It's quite open-ended and narrative-driven so there's lots of potential for crazy sci-fi shenanigans.

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.
It's a 2d20 system by Modiphius.  They also use the same (or similar) system for their Conan RPG, and John Carter Warlord of Mars RPG.

You guys would be more than welcome, we're just wrapping up the 2nd mission.  My pacing of late has been almost as bad as it is in here, just due to health issues, but I'm trying to keep it going. ;)

Interesting!  I will consider...never been much of a Star Trek person, but then I'm not much of a Star Wars person, and?  *looks around*

I'm already going into Ron-withdrawl....

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I was a Trek fan from way back...I blame my dad, he watched reruns of TOS a lot...not obsessively, by any means, but I kinda attribute my interest in sci-fi to him in many ways.

But Star Wars...I tell people Star Wars was my first love, in sci-fi.  I enjoy Star Trek, but I love Star Wars.  Not obsessively...I don't have all the books, I don't think I've ever read any of the comics, I've seen some of Clone Wars and Rebels...saw a couple of episodes of Resistance and was left flat.  But the original trilogy had a special magic for me.

But, considering I've gone, in the past month, from three active games and one haltingly active game that runs in fits and starts to one active game and the stumbling one, I've got some time...

I'll have to check it out...I'm not familiar with the system, beyond having heard of the company.  I've got a pdf of the John Carter rules somewhere, I'll have to scare it up and take a read through...

And I keep expecting Ron to show up at any moment and say, 'Why are you all still here?  I said the game is done...' *grin*

Re: Yet ANOTHER wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I've run ST:A tabletop to great success.  It's a fun, fast-moving and cinematic game system that lends itself perfectly to Trek, IMO.

The quick-start rules are free on Drive-Thru RPG:

https://www.drivethrurpg.com/p...dventures-Quickstart

...and I think on Modiphius' site as well.

Not trying to pimp my game, would just love to keep gaming with you all in some capacity. ;)

I'll definitely be giving it a look...but probably not today.  I'm working on a shoot for a series of online commercials (freelance set designer), so my day is going to be just a little crazy, what with the hour-drive to the studio and having to pack up set-dressing when it's done tonight...

No worries and no rush.  I'm taking my son to the DMV for his driving test today, and I'm off work until Friday (still recovering from non-Covid lung infection caused by, and complicated by, severe allergies to the #%!@#%% California wildfires).  So I'll be around. ;)
